The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

After almost 5 years of not recording a piece, when names like Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl appear in this EP, how can refuse to recommend it!

Cat POWER.......2006-10-05

This was my first Cat Power album and my favorite in my collection. These are very beautifully stories/songs sung by a woman who is living through the harshness of life. Her voice and pure honesty is something that helps me get through the day. These songs are great to listen to when you need to cry or scream or anything. I know whenever I pop in one of her CD's I am going to be expecting a mood change and it takes me to a wonderful place were things are calm. The song Free can be taken all sorts of ways all i know is when i hear it i can not help but dance. The album is so beautifully put together both with song order to pictures in the songbook.

Minimalist, and enigmatic.......2006-07-28

It is never entirely certain what Chan Marshall ("Cat Power") is singing about, even on the songs she "covers" (rather, deconstructs entirely, picking and choosing amongst the lyrics until they are some sort of found art almost unrecognizable to the original author). This album is probably her best, where she dumped the last vestiges of her punk-ish early music and went straight minimalist melancholy, without the ornations that hide the bones of The Greatest. She never has drums where a few chords will do. She never has chords where a single note would do. The only constant is her smoky voice, singing enigmatic lyrics that often obscure more than inform.

The result is hauntingly beautiful, like the Southern landscape from which Chan came, with the exception of "Names" which is simply chilling. Is any of it true? Does it really matter? When she sings "we can all be free/maybe not with words/maybe not with a look/but with your mind", does she believe it, or is she being ironic? It's never entirely clear what Chan's up to, but it is an experience that stands repeated listening well.

Several tracks worth mention.......2006-05-30

Personally, I liked Shaking Paper, Good Woman, and Werewolf. Werewolf is a beautiful song because its rendered in such a slow melodic way that allows for the lyrics to be shuffled into imagery very vividly. Its like imagining a silent movie from the 20s playing, only its this song in the background. Good Woman, on the other hand, offers that heart-wrenching pain of leaving a person you hold so close.

Basically, the songs on this CD are more than the sum of their parts. Its well worth the adventure to see what you like about it.

This CD is definitely in the running for my favorite album of all time. Every song on it is beautiful and I find new things no matter how many times I hear it. It goes with every mood I have.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Very Enjoyable for all music fans.......2006-03-02

This is very good collection of music that brings to life a wide variety of music that is both old and contemporary. The selections vary from composers, historical and famous such as Pavarotti and Puccini to today's James Horner (Titanic, A Beauituful Mind) and John Williams (Star Wars, Sabrina, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan).

If you enjoy the sounds of Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Enya, Kate Bush, Andrea Bocelli, and various theatre music (Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats), then you will find this collection worthy of your appreciation.

I have often wondered why classical music radio channels do not play modern composers (i.e., Horner, Willams), and am glad that this album gives them credit that they deserve. There is so many good compositions being created every day that only appear to have a voice on the big screen, which is unfortunate.

Track 11, composed by The Doors, and is a nice version, indeed. I also enjoy the Bond players giving a new twist to some old favourites.

Absolutely Amazing! Two CDs packed with the world's most beautiful classical music..........2005-11-08

First, let me begin by saying that I am by no means an expert in classical music, but have grown to appreciate it immensely in the past year. I can say wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful compilation of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's simple irresistible. There are few words to describe how emotional it is to hear Pavarotti sing "II Canto", or Placido Domingo belt out "Questa o quella". You just get numb with joy!! I have NO idea what they are saying but a translation not necessary. The entire collection (TWo jammed-packed CDs) is phenomenal (excluding the selections from "Bond" which I found to be particularly annoying and not at all "classical" in the true sense of the word). There is something here for everyone, regardless of your personal musical tastes or tolerances.

A guaranteed hit -- Don't miss this one.

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Rockin' Rockabilly At It's Best.......2000-06-07

How good is this album? Well, it's giving Aimee Mann's "Bachelor #2" a run for it's money as Album of the Year at the (almost) mid-year point. But don't be fooled; this album has very little in common with the New Wave rockabilly of Billy's early 80's output, the country leanings that he has persued since '85's "Try Me" right up thru last year's "All Night Long" or his 90's pop sensabilities with Fleetwood Mac. So how would I classify this album? As flat-out, no-nonsense rock, dressed up with an earthy roots/rockabilly sheen. Mind you, Billy has never sounded better, both musically and vocally. There's an all out, no-holes-barred energy to this release that has not been there in the past. Said energy is evident on the lilting "What A Woman Feels", the barn burner "Life And Death" and the sly toetapper "Got A Little Rock In My Shoe (Can't Stop)". Other strong cuts include "Love Me Back" and "To Get Next To You". The only sour note for me on the CD is "Highway Of Love", a semi-duet with Bekka Bramlett; it just strikes me as an outtake from 1997's (very!) weak "Bekka and Billy" CD. I would have much rather had a killer ballad with Christine McVie along the lines of 1985's "It Ain't Over" or the 1990 Fleetwood Mac gem "Do You Know", one of the best "undiscovered" recordings of the last twenty-five years. But that's nitpicking. This is a great album, full of hip-shaking, boot-stomping (and we're talking black, greasy, leather engineer boots vs. armadillo cowboy ones!) rock. Don't let this one slip thru the cracks!

Great new Billy Burnette CD.......2000-06-07

I really like this CD. It's just really fun to listen to. My favorite songs are "Love Me Back," "(Can't Stop) Got a Little Rock In My Shoe," and my very favorite: "Too Much Information." Take a listen.
