If Josh Groban's unabashedly melodramatic musical fusion inspires grousing on both sides of the classical/pop pundit divide, the screams of the (mostly) young female fans that punctuate these 2004 performances at L.A.'s historic Greek theater better underscore the real point. This set's CD and more expansive DVD complement each other well; if anything, supplemented by a live string ensemble and crack backing band, they're a warmer, more focused showcase for the singer's talents than the studio albums that made his meteoric fame. In peak form, Groban variously delivers forceful renditions of his pop-operatic powerhouses "Canto Alla Vita" and "Anna Luce Del Sole" (the former featuring a drum solo [!] from Groban, the latter a fine guest turn by Bela Fleck on banjo), takes a surprising solo piano break on Paul Simon's "America," waxes Central Asian on Troy's "Remember" and brings the crowd to its feet with the heart-on-his-sleeve dramatics of Closer's "Never Let Go." They're all informed by the singer's insouciant, youthful enthusiasm, arguing that Groban is gifted with more than just a magnificent voice; he's a complete natural as a performer as well. The DVD also includes a tour diary narrated with typical charm by the singer, as well as bonus live performance of "Believe" from the Polar Express soundtrack. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Josh Groban's 2002 PBS "Great Performances" special was a #1 selling DVD and the best-selling long-form music video of 2003. His second "Great Performances" special was taped at L.A.'s Greek Theater in the summer of 2004. For fans of the young sophisticated pop phenomenon who has sold more than 8 million albums, this CD+DVD package is just the latest great performance in the career of Josh Groban. DVD Extras: On the road with Josh for Summer 2004 Tour and a special performance of "Believe" from The Polar Express (it's PBS footage mixed w/ film footage).
Customer Reviews:
Josh is even better in live!.......2007-04-14
I recently saw Josh on his new tour with Awake, and it was so awesome that inspired me to buy this DVD to replicate the experience a little bit. I loved it! Especially loved the few extra songs I've never heard before (Mi Morena, America). Some people were complaining about the nasal sound and quality, but this is a live show so of course it sounds a little different. Bottom line is I think Josh is a great preformer and his very funny also :)
Very Good!.......2007-02-09
This CD/DVD was very good. I watched the DVD and was impresed with the way He handles the "spot light." He seems to be a very humble person and I think that is what makes his music so enjoyable to listen to. Not forgetting his awesome voice!
Let me explain..........2007-01-14
There are several reviews that talk about how annoying it is for the fans to wave light sticks and/or American flags in this DVD. Perhaps if I explain why, it will seem less annoying.
The waving of the light sticks was started at the very beginning of his first tour, mainly to show him how much the fans appreciated the concerts. The first idea was to wave them during the last verse of "You Raise Me Up," when the choir came out. Later, fans added another show of support by waving blue light sticks during "Vincent (Starry Starry Night."
OK, if you still find that annoying, that's your right. However, the flag waving at the end of "To Where You Are" was special. This concert was filmed on September 11, and the flags were waved at the end of "To Where You Are" for those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost, on 9/11/2001.
It's your right if you still find these things annoying. I just thought I'd try to help you to understand.
Since this is a forum for giving our opinions of the DVD, I have to say that I love it. He has a beautiful voice and I love listening to him under any circumstance. The DVD is wonderful, IMHO.
Re-Live the Concert Experience!.......2007-01-09
Was fortunate enough to attend Josh's "Closer" concert tour date at Jones Beach--amazing voice. Getting this album brought back all of the memories of that amazing evening outdoors under a "Starry, Starry Night." I used to not bother purchasing live albums because they had poor audio quality, but not anymore. Love this album! (Actually, I love all of his stuff.)
DVD is so worth the price.......2007-01-08
I disagree with some of the reviewers complaining about a nasal sounding CD. Yes, there are few parts where it may sound a little nasal but people have to remember that this a LIVE concert and if they wanted perfect sound they should buy the studio album instead. He still sounded brilliant and great. The DVD is fantastic for all those who don't have the luck or means to attend a Groban concert. It captures the energy and pure joy of a concert. Sometimes its even better than being at the concert because you can see Groban close up. I hope that there will be a concert DVD released for the AWAKE concerts.

Pastor Troy- Tool Muziq .......2007-07-15
Pastor Troy (A.K.A. Micah Levar Troy) ninth solo album is "Tool Muziq" (2007). Reader's reading this review should know I am not a big fan of his music. I find it hard to get past his flow, which involves far to much screaming for my liking (quickly becomes grating). This is a fourteen track release which features appearances from Gangsta Boo, Fabo, Hitman Sammy Sam & Mr. Mudd. A fast flowing Pastor Troy rips up the grimy "Saddam". Two less then memorable track's follow then Pastor Troy provides something different with "Wanting You" which is laced with some distinct production (Three 6 Mafia used it on "Late Night Tip") in a love track which has Troy talking to a woman, while female MC Gangsta Boo makes a late appearance. Pastor Troy pays tribute to his mother on "Hey Mama" rhyming over the same production which was used for Pac's post-death release "Until The End Of Time - his version does not touch Pac's. The one track on this release which I liked a lot is "Will He Come Home Tonight?", a powerful cut which features a strong Chorus from Pastor Troy and is laced with some tight production from Drumma Boy. I have had this track on replay. Long-time fans of Pastor Troy will want to add "Tool Muziq" to the collection, I recommend other's give the album a listen first.

Droppin' Bombs like Saddam........2007-07-04
Getchya tool, homies. Pastor Troy has returned, with an explosive album straight outta Atlanta. The ATLiens has long been known as one of the crunkest rappers in the game; and as someone who hasn't been on a major label in quite awhile(remember his dispute with BME?), Troy also remains one of the most underrated emcees coming out of the South, and hip-hop in general today. His energy on the microphone is virtually unmatched; dude literally sounds like he's about to buss some heads open everytime he picks up the mic. Tool Muziq, which was originally known as Saddam, is no different.
Besides having one of the most awesome album covers of the year(for once, you can judge a book by its cover), Troy brings his A-game, literally, on the quality of the material within. While this album will likely move about as many units as another Southern classic this year(Devin's Waitin' To Inhale), sales certainly don't mean ish to Troy. He's just doing what he loves to, and that's entertaining his fans with some trill ish. The title track starts this album off on a high-note, as the legendary DJ Squeeky produces a banging beat that makes you wanna get off your seat, and bounce someone off a concrete pavement. Troy urging you to grab your tools only helps amplify the intensity of this hard-edge track. The following track, Saddam, produced by the criminally underrated Shawty Redd is a track of Godzilla proportions, as Troy comes charging at you in an armored tank, threatening to bomb anyone who opposes him. With his high-pitched squeal, yet seamless flow, Troy lets us know that he's about to drop a bomb like Saddam.
The next two tracks, That's The Move and I'm F'd Up, follow the same formula as the last two, brandishing pistols and chugging alcohol like there's no tomorrow while trying to get some bad girls at the crib. The track following these is the first big surprise on this album, as it sports one of the dopest beats of all time; DJ Paul and Juicy J's Late Nite Tip. The original version by Three 6 Mafia is an undisputed Southern classic, and this sequel of sorts, featuring Three 6's former first-lady, Gangsta Boo, does justice to its predecessor. I Want You is definitely not a rehash like some of the more recent other rap songs that use old beats(Mos Def' Crime and Medicine comes to mind, as that song hurt Liquid Swords' rep), and if anyone could've made a sequel to this classic Three 6 track, it's definitely Troy.
It slows down quite a bit with The Belt, which is more of an interlude than a full-fledged track. Troy doesn't rhyme at all on it, which is confusing. It's too long of an interlude at over three minutes, and the only real blemish on this otherwise phenomenal album. Troy makes up for it with the dope No Money, followed by the DJ Squeeky laced Hard For The Money, which samples the 70s song of a similar name. The next two tracks are both produced by Shawty Redd, Digital featuring D4L's Fabo and In My Truck featuring Hitman Sammy Sam. Digital is a dope club track featuring the often misunderstood Fabo, he does his usual crooning, if you can call it that, on the hook. In My Truck With Me is weird in the sense that Troy talks with Shawty in the beginning about who he'll collaborate with on the track, before it finally starts. This track definitely features some of Shawty's crawling production that he's famous for after his work with Jeezy, only sped up to a different pitch to match Troy's vocals. Troy drops a hot first verse, with Sammy coming in for a second verse, tearing the club down with his, while also constructing the chorus. Sam's the last of the few guest appearances on the album, and Troy holds it down for the rest.
Still Looking is a dope track, even if it is the most materialistic Troy gets on the entire album, as he screams that some honey is looking at his slab the entire track. I'm Down is Troy's self-produced track on the album, and has some heavy guitar accents on the song. With a haunting melody featured in the background, Troy tones his delivery down a bit to deliver some introspective lyrics. If rappers' street-credentials really DID equal sales, Troy would go platinum off this track alone. Long time fans of the Pastor should definitely enjoy this track quite a bit. The following track is one of my favorites, as it features the beat from 2Pac's Until The End of Time, which also samples Mr. Mister's Take These Broken Wings. I was never a fan of 2Pac's single using this beat, but Pastor Troy definitely takes this beat, and makes it his own, ripping this beat to shreds. Joe Budden did the same thing last year with his Broken Wings freestyle, and it's nice to hear a Southern take on it after Joe's last year. Will He Come Home Tonight is produced by Drumma Boy(famous for U.S.D.A.'s White Girl, also featuring his signature intro). Much like I'm Down, this track is dedicated to the gritty streets from which Troy hails; but, he also mentions how he never meant to be gangsta, or hard on this track. It just happened for Troy, and while he never intended on it to happen, he's still proud of what he's become today, while praying for all his 'gangstas and his real ninjaz.' A deep track from a deep artist.
Pastor Troy's Tool Muziq is an album that any hip-hop head, Southern or not, should feel. This is dope music, and you don't have to look any further in 2007 to find it. Grab this on July 3rd, and support Pastor Troy.

You could have passed it off as a fluke. Remission was an awesome album, helping revitalize metal and bringing the band much deserved notice. Leviathan was a gigantic leap, perhaps the most ambitious metal album in years. But could it keep going? People were concerned--side glances were given, hand wringing began as Mastodon moved to a major. And for what? Turns out for nothing. Blood Mountain is flat-out amazing. If anything, it is another leap forward, both experimentaly and melodically. From the opening blast of "The Wolf is Loose", to the gorgeous "Sleeping Giant", on to the propulsive "Circle of Cysquatch." The King Crimson acid scratch of "Bladecatcher" gives way to the beautiful guitars on "This Mortal Soil" and the album closer. Lyrically and vocally, there are stand-outs--especially "Colony of Birchmen" with rich harmonies and a guest appearance from QOTSA's Josh Homme. Other guests on the record include Scott Kelly of Neurosis and Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta. This marks yet another grand progressions for a band that is quickly building up one of the best catalogs in metal. --Robert Arambel

Customer Reviews:
Interesting Music.......2007-07-16
I have only heard of these guys but never actually heard them until I bought this album. As soon as the first song started, I go "Oh crap, not another hardcore band." I just don't like that shouting singing style, at least done with such good music. There are other places the vocals are not so bad. Sometimes they kind of touch on the "alternative" vibe which I don't like either, but in other places not so much.
What I really like is the varied music. It is quite interesting with lots of twists and turns. I read another review where the guy says the band basically cut and pasted this album together in the studio. Maybe so, but they did a pretty good job of it. They are all competent musicians and if I was not mistaken, I actually heard a decent guitar solo in there! It seems many of the new bands are anti-guitar solo but these guys don't shy away from it. Kudos for that.
This is adventurous metal and I really like it, all except for the vocals. Recommended.
Best of the best.......2007-07-08
I've listened to this album hundreds of times and still get excited when it comes up in the CD changer. I can't imagine taking it out anytime soon. It's probably their most solid effort top to bottom and that's saying a lot after their previous release established them among metal's elite.
One of the most noticeable differences between this and Leviathan is the improved production quality. Brann's drumming sounds absolutely fantastic and the vocals are leaps and bounds beyond previous efforts. Though they may have signed with a big name label, the composition is just as intricate and interesting as you'd expect.
They again take the concept album approach and execute it flawlessly. This time instead of being at sea, we're climbing up blood mountain, trying to bring the crystal skull to the top at the gods' request. The lyrics as well as the music lay out the story in grand Greek myth style fashion. It's much more linear in nature then Leviathan's attempt to retell Moby Dick. There's a definite beginning, middle, climax, and conclusion (the breathtaking Pendulous Skin). Our hero - who's a werewolf - begins his journey by searching in a cave for the crystal skull, then continues up the mountain-side facing ogres, avalanches, starvation, and his own personal fears, only to reach the top and head back home. A truly epic journey that I think warrants a visual representation as well.
I highly recommend this to those who appreciate fine musicianship.
The wolf is loose.......2007-05-31
Mastodon is the rarest kind of metal band -- a really brilliant, creative one. No posing or nu-metal appeals for radioplay here.
And after their previous brilliant albums, they reached a new apex in "Blood Mountain." The Atlanta band spins songs about a beautiful, icy land -- played in a sonic eruption of kinetic instruments and some brilliantly mythic lyrics. It's a fiery, breathtaking ride.
It opens with rapid-fire drums and a squealing guitar, with a hoarse voice shouting, "The hero of the gods/The crossing of the threshold!" But the music soon uncoils into a fast-moving hard-rocker, full of blistering riffs and surreal lyrics about gods, shapeshifters, tyrants, heroes and "hulder folk and fairies."
Then we break into the tribal drums and blazing, sludgy riffs of "Crystal Skull," which is just begging to be air-guitared. And they don't let up in the songs that follow: the darkly epic "Sleeping Giant," metal with nimbly catchy melodies, sludgy hard-rock that blazes with muscular basslines, and expanses of roaring prog-metal that races by at light speed.
No ballads. No interludes. Sure, some of these songs open with some electronic squiggling, or maybe a mellow guitar melody, but they don't take long to explode into something totally different. The only exception is "Pendelous Skin," the very last song on the album -- it's an atmospheric blend of slow-burning rock played in a more alt-rocky style.
But up until then, it's nothing but rapid-fire, headbanging proggy-rocky metal. Sludgy and/or muscular riffs, smashing bass, and blindingly rapid drums that have to be heard to be believed -- and the whole thing is tightly woven out of different styles. And this is all to make story-songs with complex, intense melodies that can change in midsong -- from epic metal to chaos, and back again -- to reflect whatever is happening.
And the world Mastodon is exploring in this just reeks of fantasy and old legends -- nature gods, wilderness, icy lands, skulls, tree people, ivory towers, one-eyed monsters, more skulls, and ancient elms. I have no idea what they're trying to communicate, but their songwriting is definitely atmospheric ("A vast calm wilderness/The call to adventure comes/Lead and land atop this rock/Infinite path carved with unrivaled skill...")
Mastodon's "Blood "Mountain" is a devastatingly, frighteningly mythic experience, like wandering through an ancient legend. Here's hoping this band only gets better with time.
Album of the decade.......2007-03-30
I listen to everything from jazz to metal, and Blood Mountain is the most interesting and original music that I have bought in 15 years. It has been in my CD player for months. Every time I listen to it, I hear something new in the music that I didn't notice before. Mastodon truly has produced a masterpiece with Blood Mountain. he songs are brutal, sublime, sprawling, and psychedelic. Nobody sounds like Mastodon. I have no doubt that Mastodon will be the biggest Metal band on the planet in the near future. Buy this work of Art, and see Mastodon live. You will be blown away
Searching for crystal..........2007-03-28
I gave it 4 stars the first few listens. But just like all of their albums, after 4 or 5 listens, that's when all the greatness really seeps into my pores. Okay, flat-out, the vocals are the worst thing about the album, with an over-abundance of arbitrarily pitched clean singing. But then again, it stopped bothering me, since Mastodon has never had very great vocals. But they do compliment the storm of music.
The music is a bit more straight-forward and rock oriented in parts. But never fear, they break into some exceptional technical tid-bits that are redeeming. Some of the most impressive work I think, was the acoustic guitar playing (which isn't in the foreground). The intitial impression is a bit watered down compared to prior recordings, but so much is wrapped deep within the recording, that so much more comes to fruition with each listen. My only real big problem (not even the vocals), is sub-par recording sound thanks to Matt Bayles (Minus The Bear). He does a great job producing the band and capturing their absolute proficiency. But he does a piss-poor job of capturing that huge brilliant sound that Mastodon has live, and should be kept to engineering emo bands and not metal bands (since he seems to be tone-deaf). The guitar is dull. The drums are felty and toneless, unlike the live sound. The ripping bass lines are almost inaudible. For a huge raging, yet not overly refined sound, Matt Bayles should have simply produced this, and the engineering should have been conducted by Kurt Ballou.
The song writing is some of the most intricate that Mastodon has ever created, with raging tempos, shredding crazy riffs, and soothing mellow tracks amidst the chaos.
Mastodon are one of the most unique and talented metal bands alive. A crisper recording sound, and less clean vocals would have made this record a perfect 5.

Jump (or be forced) directly into the three-plus hour DVD on this a/v split release for footage of Josh Homme and band on the stage in London during the hottest months of 2005. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes shots of the ever revolving group. Foo Fighter Dave Grohl pops up. ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons pulls a cameo. It's all here. Key performances include "No One Knows," "Little Sister," "Burn The Witch," plus smoking versions of "Fun Machine" and "I Wanna Make It Wit Chu" (from Desert Sessions Vol. 9 & 10). The audio-only disc provides listeners with 75 minutes of pure QotSA including a powerhouse reading of "I Think I Lost My Headache" and an appropriately ragged "Long Slow Goodbye." This often strange picture is a fine fitting snapshot. --Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
You can think of this feature-length concert DVD/live album, which features all the crucial Queens hits from their studio albums, as a "to go" version of their decibel-happy shows, but that really won't be doing the three and a half hours of live, rare, and acoustic performances and behind-the-scenes footage of the band and their pals like Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan, Billy Gibbons, and former Queens bassist Nick Olivieri making fools of themselves, justice.
It might help to think of Over the Years as a 21st-century version of Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same for the volume of its material, or even A Hard Day's Night for its willingness to show the Queens having a laugh, but they'd rather you see and hear it for what it really is--the definitive encapsulation of the band and their music from their not-so-humble beginnings to their current status as one of the rock's biggest and most dynamic acts.
Included in the concert footage from the band's sold-out Brixton Academy and Koko shows in London last summer are live favorites from Rated R and Songs for the Deaf such as "No One Knows," "Feel Good Hit of the Summer," and "Go with the Flow," as well as new Queens classics from their latest album Lullabies to Paralyze like the smash single "Little Sister" and their most recent bombshell, "Burn the Witch." In addition to the three-plus hours of live and uncut Queens mayhem, Over the Years also boasts 75 minutes of audio bliss that covers all the bases Queens fans need to get the rush of their favorite songs performed live and loud shot directly into their homes.
Also included are the brand-new track "Fun Machine" as well as "Make It Wit Chu," a previously unreleased gem from singer Josh Homme's fabled Desert Sessions, an ongoing series of collaborative songwriting and recording sessions where marquee musicians such as PJ Harvey and Deen Ween are invited down to his studio Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California, to join him in collectively exploring new musical terrain.

To Grandmothers house we go...........2007-03-16
Being an avid fan of QOTSA I was rather excited to listen to this album and watch the DVD because of the great track listing. Overall everything is awesome, with one exception, I have a really hard time enjoying it only because Joey Castillo is going at a little bit of a faster tempo than the songs originally should be at, to me it's very noticeable and it drive me nuts! I just want to yell at him sloooow down a little and it will be perfect. That is the only reason why I did not give it five stars. Other than that this set is awesome, great DVD to watch with lots of great extras and great cameo's as well. And the album is a great summer album, makes you wanna be gettin with the love! Oh one more thing...Nick Oliveri needs to be back in the band again, that guy is SICK(Sick as in really really good)!!!
AMAZING! LAS REINAS SON LO MEJOR!.......2006-03-18
If you love QOTSA, like i do, you must buy this DVD. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!! LAS REINAS DE LA EDAD DE PIEDRA SON LO MEJOR!!!
One heck of a mind-f***!.......2006-02-01
As far as QOTSA albums go, it's okay. The songs are fresh-sounding (which is something I don't always find with live albums) but the real item being showcased here is the concert DVD. Impeccably trippy. It adds a completely enthralling element to the already rocking music and let's you relax and such with the band in a sort of intimate way. I definitely recommend this to hardcore QOTSA fans but I'm not sure the average joe would appreciate it as much as I did.
A Falling Experience!.......2006-01-28
Despite Worries, I Knew the disc will be a valued part of my collection.
When I finally decided to purchase this DVD I was a little worried. ( I owned songs for the deaf, and downloaded every single, and a whole bunch of random songs.) I didnt know if an entire DVD would entertain me. I saw them recently on tour, And they are Incredible. The live accuracy of the (ever-evolving) band was perfect. You hear almost EXACTLY what they have on their studio recordings.
Luckily, their album sounds, and live show COLLIDES into this wonderful set of discs.
During the first batch of songs("Flow" through "little sister") I felt like all I did was spend $15 bucks. But at some point I finally realised I was completely engrossed. A Perfect balance of familiarity and Improv. And of course, the DVD goes on for TONS of songs after that!. I Wish I could come up with a fault of this recording. But there isn't any. Great Sound, Good Song selection, Awesome Visual/Angle Imagery.
It also has alot of Hilarous crowd interaction and Clips
If your just skimming this review, This is a Great DVD/CD set. The Sound Quality is listenable, not like cheap LIVE recordings. PERFECT for putting on in the background. And ABSOLUTELY AMAZING to sit down and watch with the lights dimmed, maybe a couple drinks. = )
one of better music dvd's i own.......2006-01-14
this is definately a must have for any QOTSA fans. they play stuff off of every album but play more off of the s/t and songs for the deaf than anything else. luckily they don't play much off of rated r (that album is definately the weak link). the sound quality is fantastic so don't be worried about that. it's got a bunch of bonus stuff when nick was still in the band.
the only reason why i only gave this 4 stars is because it was basically only one show with only one line up. i really would have liked to get better recordings (and better camera angles) of their older shows. oh well.
hopefully a kyuss dvd will eventually make it's way to shelves.

Bizarre, Attention-Deficit Prog/Punk/Rock/Noise?!.......2007-07-17
The Fall Of Troy are an interesting new band, combining elements of some recent musical trends into....something. Metal, psychedelia, world music, punk and rock all get stirred together in this impatient, wildly fast-moving brew. Sort of like what would happen if you combined At The Drive In, Underoath, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Rush, and Clutch. So, of course, they are virtually indefinable.
Comparisons to The Mars Volta are unavoidable; they play the same style of "outside the box" avant-garde weirdness, and the vocals literally sound just like Volta alum Cedric Bixler-Zavala; but Fall Of Troy guitarist/vocalist Thomas Erak has obviously been weaned on Sabbath and Metallica riffs, and this makes Troy's sonic blowout a bit heavier, which is refreshing for me. Interesting stuff, and pretty catchy sometimes, too. I will look forward to hearing more from this band. Not quite cohesive enough to earn more than 3.5 stars, though....
It will be the best album of 2007..well maybe.......2007-06-26
Basically this album is a modern masterpiece of both musical composition and complexity. The Fall of Troy already established themselves as the saviors of post-hardcore with 2005's Doppelganger, and with Manipulator they have surpassed even my high expectations. This album is all over the place but manages to stay grounded in a familiar yet original sound thanks to the top notch production of Matt Bayles. Amazing guitar work + diverse vocal arrangements + air tight drumming + unique lyrical tones = The Fall of Troy. The only bands that could possibly release a better album this year are Between the Buried and Me, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Protest the Hero...and they're going to have to do one hell of a job.
Buy it. Play it. Love it.
Where can I find more stars?!.......2007-06-12
When something heard for the first time can give me goose bumps that says a mouthful. Manipulator is such an audible delight that I'd feel guilty for listening if it wasn't just so "giving me the happiness". As a product of a generation suffering from ADHD I love movement in my music and, as a result, "Quarter Past" has become the reason for my being. I'm proud to own this album - the smile would not dissipate the first time I played it - and would hope that as many people as possible experience what is not only an amazing audible opus but a marvel of creativity.
ummm..............2007-05-30
i thought i would give this band a try and ya know what; waiste of my download time. music in general; not too shabby at all. vocals/singer: my god, wtf? sounds like he is trying to hard. but the 2 stars go to the music. A. should become like explosions in the sky; just play music. or B. Get a new singer
At First Eh...Then...Oh-Mazing........2007-05-29
When listening to this CD the first time, You notice that it's not as "crazy" as Doppelganger and such. But I have kept putting on in the background and now It is becoming stuck in my head and I am willingly playing it when I drive everywhere, the first 4 songs start off the CD amazingly.
This CD doesn't get repetitive like some of the songs off of Doppelganger. This Fall of Troy is fantastic. You will realize how great and just as hard and crazy it is once you give it a few spins. This is by far the best Fall of Troy CD to date and wouldn't mind them staying in this direction.

Director Wolfgang Peterson took Homer's The Iliad, excerpted the epic Trojan Wars, ditched those troublesome Greek gods, and largely hung his film's fortunes on copious amount of CGI wizardry and Brad Pitt. Immersing himself in the sword 'n' sandal genre largely revived by Gladiator composer James Horner (whose work here replaced the original score of Gabriel Yared) faced some challenging musical choices: Employ the dark synthetic goth textures of Hans Zimmer, or evoke a more traditional, heroic orchestral tack? The veteran scorer's "3200 Years Ago" arguably goes Zimmer one better, its dissonance-laced textures and dark percussion evoking an ancient, frightening world. There are similar intrigues ("The Temple of Poseidon," "Hector's Death," "The Wooded Horse...") elsewhere, but whether because of the haste with which he composed the score or other filmmaking pressures, Horner also dispenses some cliched, orchestral heroism more worthy of Steve Reeves or Ah-nold. Aficionados often accuse the composer of repeating himself, and the repetitive brass arpeggios he uses as frequent punctuation here do seem straight from the playbook, not to mention Enemy at the Gates; at least he's thematically apropos. There's a closing nod to Jarre's Lawrence of Arabia lyricism, and then Josh Groban gets to burnish his career with a suitably melodramatic take on David Foster's bathetic, neo-exotica ballad Remember Me. -- Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Music for a Certain Mood.......2007-07-05
First of all, I am just happy that this score sounds nothing like Horner's scores in the 90's, because Horner has a tendency to recycle himself when he creates a new musical score.------Taken on its own terms, this score goes into the 'rousing' category.-------If you need something to help you get up in the morning this is it.--------I own scores for all my different moods, and this one really does the job when you want something relatively simple with a lot of horns! Of course, having Josh Groban sing a rousing 'Remember Me' during the end credits does not hurt at all!-------Truly, if you are an eclectic music listener, you will be able to gladly fit this into your collection for a certain mood that wants a 'wake-up' call. 'Remember', this is James Horner afterall------no shoddy orchestration here!------------------ Still uncertain, wait for the 'used' price to drop another dollar or two. Yet, definitely put it on your future purchase list.----There are times when we all feel like some rousing 'epic like' music that does not beat around the bush!
Coming from an unbiased fan of the Yared soundtrack..........2007-01-30
NOTE: People often give four or even five stars to film scores that don't deserve it. By awarding this score three stars, I am not saying it is significantly lacking or intrinsically flawed. This is a worthy collection of music we're dealing with.
Horner's score for Troy was an earsore for some. The word most frequently employed by his detractors to describe this CD is "bombastic." I can tell you with authority that Yared's score is much subtler in comparison, but it does not render this CD worthless. It's good, but not THAT good. Though I have recently acquired the Yared score and thoroughly enjoyed most of it, my sympathies lie with Horner. Now that I've compared the two, Horner's score lack finesse in many areas yet proves to be more memorable than anybody cares to admit. I've been courted by all the hype surrounding Yared's score for well over a year now, but now that I have listened to it I still appreciate Horner's work. If things were my way, I'd have tracks pulled from both scores for use in the film. Yared's work certainly does have its highlights (Although if it were up to him, Troy's sacking wouldn't have been nearly as poignant. Unlike Horner, who chose to include the wailing women we all know and love during the attack, Yared was content just using the orchestra).
Horner's score is much more straightforward than Yared's at times. Its occasional bluntness compliments the epic nature of Troy well. It has everything Troy needed: exciting battle themes, a good deal of exotic instrumentals and vocals, and subdued themes that convey the loss and sorrow characteristic of any war. I was perfectly content with this score's use in the film and it's just as good in CD form. If you enjoyed Troy, the music is obviously evocative of the film and therefore is a must-buy. And, not that this is relevant at all, but I can't believe this CD is rated lower than the score for Batman Begins.
I do have ONE gripe about this particular CD's contents:
Remember, sung by Josh Groban, is utterly passable. He has a good singing voice, but this isn't the Prince of Egypt. This is Troy. His poppish vocals and the background beat don't belong on this CD or in the credits. Give me ethnic instrumentals and wailing women any day, but this is the only track here I really despise.
Excellent Soundtrack, But Missing Some Cuts.......2006-08-15
This stirring soundtrack contains all the music for the lengthy battle scenes in the film but omits some of the shorter pieces. I was especially sorry that the rendition of what appears to be the theme for Achilles only appears briefly within the battle sequences; the stand-alone version that occurred early on in the film isn't included on the soundtrack album.
The Studio Must Be Crazy...Or Deaf.......2006-08-07
At first I wasn't that excited about the fact that Gabriel Yared was going to write the score for "Troy" because I thought he was not the kind of composer who could create a colossal score. Then there came the controversy regarding the rejection of his composition in favor of one written by James Horner. I must say that I was not surprised about that decision.
Then my concerns were confirmed: James Horner went back to his usual tricks. The "danger motif" -as heard before on "Star Trek II-The Wrath Of Khan", "Krull", "Brainstorm", "Willow" and, in a very infamous and repetitive way, "Enemy At The Gates" -is once again here. But unlike "Enemy At The Gates", there are three different themes that are really quite catchy. The most impressive one is the theme for Achilles and his Myrmidorns, very epic and triumphant. Then there is an exhultant motif for the city of Troy. And I don't want to forget the love theme, which is later turned into a song sung by Josh Groban. The action music is quite enjoyable, but they would be great if the "danger" music didn't interfere. Another thing that bothers me about this work is the use of a wailing woman; you know, I'm getting tired of the endless use of that technique.
After the release of the movie and the soundtrack CD, I got the chance to listen to Gabriel Yared's sample music, and I must ask myself "Is the studio crazy...or deaf?" Because what I heard blew me away. Yared's music is more lyrical and impressive than Horner's. Unfortunately, we have to stick with this CD until somebody at the studio opens his/her eyes and ears to see and hear the real music for "Troy".
a let down.......2006-07-06
Well I saw this film and loved it, even though I know it was nothing like the actual event, it does not mean this movie cannot be enjoyed. The fights are great, great characters, and great music.
It took me a while to get the soundtrack to accompany the film, and I am sure those others who appreciate film scores agree that when you want a soundtrack the music you know from the film stays in your head, as if metaphorically nagging you to buy it.
So eventually when I bought it I had a quick flick through the tracks(as you do with a new one) and I did not think much of it at the time but was a bit dissapointed, however I thought that when I had a proper listen I would feel better - I did not.
The first track was actually belonging in the middle of the movie, it is horrible and not good to listen to.
The secong track was good untill they reach troy, that same tune of bells and trumpets is repeated for ages and becomes really annoying.
I wont go on with them; but I found that the best music parts in the film are not on the CD; like when Achilles fights Boagrius and when he is playfighting with Patriclus. All in all it gets worse everytime I listen to it.
It is a waste of money.

As co-host of CMT's Nashville Star, Troy Coleman might have been expected to stick to the amiable hick-hop novelty of his 2005 debut, Loco Motive. Instead, his sophomore effort rocks harder than expected--think heavy-metal guitars--and emphasizes the "black" of the title. While hammy barnyard tunes ("Hick Chick" and a dance mix of "I Play Chicken with the Train") raise their feathered heads, Cowboy brings along Angela Hacker, J. Money, and M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold to balance the MuzikMafia shtick. "The Black Buffalo comin' out the box," he warns in "How Can You Hate Me?," a song that seethes with anger: "Some of y'all sayin' Troy ain't nothing but a Sambo." No more, big guy. No more. --Alanna Nash

MUCH better than the debut...Troy found his groove here..........2007-07-20
I am actually SHOCKED how much I love this record!!!! Most will probably tell me I should be ashamed of myself, but in reality, THIS is the record that Big & Rich should have released instead of the enjoyable but something's missing "Between Raising Hell & Amazing Grace"...it's much better, catchier and more exciting, edgier throughout.
If anything, it's like a much better, non-Republican, Kid Rock. Troy doesn't sound like he's trying too hard here, the songs are better-written, they're much more cohesive, and there's no sense of novelty like "Loco Motive" had. The blend of hard rock, old school hiphop, alt-country, and dance rhythms works really well all over "Black In The Saddle", a really seamless blend...Troy and John Rich finally figured it out...it's equal to Big & Rich's "Horse Of A Different Colour", Troy's version of it...and this album proves that John Rich (he goes under the pseudonym "J.Money" here) is capable of matching it and maybe even surpassing it...BRHAAG is not it..."Black In The Saddle" is equal to that vision.
I love the references to rock bands like Guns & Roses and mosh pits, goood times and "Hick Chicks, Dixie Divas and you Southern Belles"...and the "Barn Dance Remix" of "I Play Chicken With The Train" is better than the original, the novelty aspect gone, replaced by a cohesive vision of rock, dance, hiphop and country.
I like I like...and most mainstream country people would probably hate this like poison. I wonder who this should be aimed towards??? The dance clubs??? The modern rock crowd??? Rappers, maybe, but they're too closed-minded. Maybe those who dug Run DMC, Beastie Boys, old school rap, Ice-T collaborating with Body Count???
I don't know, but it doesn't matter, it's a great record that will go underappreciated and unnoticed...too bad really...Cowboy TRoy's really good after all...even his inbetween single "Hook Em Horns" was great too...
WORST RAPPER EVER.......2007-07-12
ALL HE HAS IS A GIMIC HE STOLE FROM KID ROCK AND UNCLE KRACKER. HIS VOICE IS HORRIBLE AND EVERY SONG SOUNDS THE SAME. M SHADOWS COULDN'T EVEN SAVE THIS ALBUM. MAYBE HE SHOULD RECRUIT SOME SOUTHERN HIP HOP PRODUCERS AND MAKE AN INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM, OR MAYBE LOTS OF GUEST RAPPERS LIKE DIDDY. KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR GOOD AT TROY. STAY A HYPE MAN. THERE IS ALREADY TOO MUCH BAD MUSIC ON THE SHELVES COLLECTING DUST AT WAL-MART.

Troy, you never disappoint.......2007-05-02
Once again Troy Sneed takes gospel music to the next level. My favorite song is #5, "Because of You" which puts you in the realm of the Holy Spirit. In matters of the spirit, this CD enhances and guarantees worship and outstsnding praise.
Now I'm in His Presence.......2007-01-10
I originally heard the song "Hallelujiah" on the radio and just had to have it. Of course my biggest fear was that I would not like any of the other songs on the cd. I am happy to say that all the songs on the cd are great. There are no R&B or Hip Hop beats on it ( if I wanted hip hop or r&b I would have continued to listen to secular music. The songs are the type that I listened to when I was a young girl and I can definately feel the Spirit when listening to these songs. Thank you Jesus for this cd.
I believe this is the best of his CD's!!.......2006-10-13
This is truly, TRULY an awesome worship CD. I encourage all to purchase if nothing else but for song #10!!! The Greatest of the Greatest is THE SONG!!! Oh my gosh you have to listen to it. This song will truly usher you into worship. Enjoyed the project.

Strauss's last opera is one of the wonders of lyric art: an intelligent conversation piece about aesthetic principles (which is more important, words or music?) wrapped in achingly beautiful music. Its humor and drama are subtler than we're used to, but the opera is no less pleasurable for it. Capriccio's reputation as a connoisseur's piece is well served by this 1957 recording that features a superb cast led by the distinguished Straussian Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. True, she could be mannered, but the role of the Countess who must decide between the poet and the musician fits her like a glove, and she's radiant in the final, soaring monologue. Everyone else in the cast is outstanding, and the monophonic sound is so clear that you almost won't miss stereo. Sawallisch has the Philharmonia playing with the utmost transparency. Karl Böhm's DG stereophonic version with Gundula Janowitz is almost as fine (although currently out of print), but this one, like vintage wine, just gets better and better. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Peerless Recording of a Sublime Work of Art.......2007-05-14
Repeated evocation of the word "perfect" in descriptions of this recording convinced me to buy it, and even in the midst of such lofty praise, I was not disappointed. To the contrary; Capriccio is amongst the most incisive and beautiful operas ever crafted, combining the intelligence and perspicacity of a truly outstanding libretto with all the beauty and sublimity of which the mature Strauss was capable. It is an opera for opera lovers, a piece of musical virtuosity that not only delights the listener, but brings to light the question of the nature of art, the source of the profundity found in music and verse; it is an opera about the nature of opera, and art itself. Perhaps appropriately for an opera examining the ideals of the artistic form, the cast and production are here utterly flawless; Elizabeth Schwarzkopf gives as nuanced and breathtaking an interpretation of Strauss as only she could, and there isn't a single element in the performance that comes across as weak. Given the fact that in Capriccio, it is an intelligent and often hilariously mordant discourse on art that attains primacy rather than overarching drama or passion, it is admittedly not an opera for everyone. For those who truly love opera and art, those who are looking for something a bit different and more philosophic than typical operatic passion, despair, and suicide, those who are looking for the perfectly produced version of the perfectly crafted opera--one cannot do any better than this version of Capriccio. Buy it and enjoy the pinnacle of truly brilliant music.
Sublime Strauss.......2007-05-07
Capriccio, one of the finest achievements of Richard Strauss' late flowering, is served well in this definitive recording. An impressive array of top quality singers is supported magnificantly by the spirited conducting of Wolfgang Sawallisch.
While the mono recording might be detrimental in the case of a larger scale work, in this intimate conversation piece its absence is hardly noticible. This re-issue is a welcome reminder of just how good Walter Legge's series of opera recordings by his Philharmonia Orchestra in the 1950s were; it is part of a valuable legacy, the like of which we are unlikely ever to receive again from a major record label.
An acquired taste........2007-05-07
Richard Strauss -- like really great scotch -- is an acquired taste.
This is Glen Livit level. (Not sure I spelled that brand name correctly.)
A world treasure.......2005-09-20
This kind of opera is the most rarified of the arts. It is a treasure for all the world, but it takes some effort to come to terms with it. Tastes more used to popular arts will likely not at first be able to appreciate the tremendous richness of this work. After all, there is no hero, no love story beyond some minor flirtations, and certainly no dramatic action to excite the passions. So, what is this work and why is it so wonderfully important?
This was the last opera of Richard Strauss and it is in every sense a masterwork. The composer set himself a terribly difficult task. Here we have Flamand, a composer, and Olivier, a poet who engage in a sometimes intellectual and sometimes petty discussion of which of their arts is primary. They are both enamored of the Countess who is a patron of the arts, used to being admired, and is not quick to reveal herself. Her brother, the Count, is interested in female talent and his acting is pedestrian, but he is complemented because of his position. There is also the director of their theater, La Rouche. He starts the opera asleep, but becomes quite agitated by the ongoing debate and declares that without his art, the other two would be meaningless.
There is so much in this opera that this little paragraph can only set up all the wonderful insights that Strauss provides. Serious opera is all sung? We get spoken drama (so Olivier can make his point). There are musical comments as well on the words spoken. Brief quotes of various styles emphasize this or that point as well as undermine others. It gets to the point that towards the end, the main characters have all left the stage and eight servants appear. One comments about all the pointless discussion. Another asks whether opera will get to the point where domestics will be put on stage.
The music in this opera is like a slow continuous crescendo of sophistication and intensity. Amazing things are happening when the texture becomes its most complex including the eating of cake, the drinking of wine, discussion of the ongoing themes of the opera, and commentary on the whole scene. It is all so masterfully handled that it provides musically stunning effects and clarifies the points being discussed in the opera with great sophistication.
The final extended aria by the Countess is exquisite beyond measure and sung transcendently by Elizabeth Schwarzkopf. She is asked to think of an end for their opera. She asks if there is one that is not trivial. The opera ends, so beautifully, with the major domo calling the Countess, saying, "Your Ladyship, supper is served." Perfect. And thus Strauss ended a mighty career in writing fifteen operas.
This recording was done in 1959 and is in mono. While stereo was available, squabbling among the performers about who would be where led to using mono to settle the matter. It still sounds terrific. The booklet provided is very helpful as is the provided libretto.
Some believe that this opera should be performed in a small hall in the language of the audience. I am not so sure. The sophistication of the underlay would be lost. Nowadays, most opera halls use supertitles and they help everyone understand the opera while retaining the beauty of expression in the original language.
A perfect polemic on art.......2004-09-25
There have been a handful of perfect Opera recordings over the years. Perfection, of course, is a subjective judgement that can, if ill-used, incite violence. Particularly among Opera fans. Naturally, an Opera review that doesn't initiate gunplay is a good thing.
I mention it because I offer this 1957 recording of Capriccio as an example, extremely rare in the history of recorded Opera, of a perfect recording - a Reference recording, one of perhaps two dozen. Its status as a Reference recording is not controversial among serious record collectors. It assumed that mantle almost immediately after its release in 1959. But perfect? Nothing in Life is perfect!
True. But Art is NOT Life. Thankfully, what we find so disappointing, even tragic, in Life can be transmuted into perfection when Art achieves its most exalted fruition in the hands of those with a burning desire for self-expression and the unique means to do so. A tad pretentious? Maybe. But it so happens that Art is what this 1941 Opera - the last Strauss would write - is about. Art as Alchemy. The transformation of what is base and mundane into something meaningful and gloriously eternal. Something perfect! And almost as if on que, Wolfgang Sawallisch and his stunning, impossible to ever replicate cast along with perhaps the greatest house band of the era, recorded an Opera about Artistic perfection... perfectly!
Nominally, this polemic written by Clemens Krauss offers a debate between Words and Music; each claiming supremacy in the Operatic Art. The Opera begins with a lovely string sextet played by the Orchestra: the beauty of the unaccompanied music making a strong case for its primacy. The Opera ends with the words of a sonnet, and a questioning gaze into a mirror by a Countess one cannot help but compare to two others inhabiting Der Rosenkavalier and Le Nozze di Figaro. Everywhere there is the struggle between the temporal and the eternal. It is this final scene with its suggestion of verbal temporality that ignited my suspicion that Strauss comes down on the side of Music as the eternal face of Operatic Art, the winner in the debate. You may not agree. This rich suggestiveness is just one of the reasons why Capriccio, alone among Struass' late Operas, is winning wide-spread acceptance into the repertory.
Sawallisch, merely 34 at the time of recording, exhibits exquisite taste in his textural delicacy. Tempos are broad yet firm. His time-beating clear, uncomplicated and comparable to the great Knappertsbusch. Instrumental and Vocal balances are exceptionally clear. His Orchestra, the Philharmonia, was possibly the best recording band of the 1950's and early 1960's. Incidentally, the superb Horn solos are NOT played by Dennis Brain, cruelly killed in an auto accident the day before recording commenced, but Alan Civil (Horn Soloist on the Beatles' "For No One" found on their 1966 album Revolver).
Elizabeth Schwarzkopf is superb as the Countess Madeleine, emotionally reserved without hauteur. Her voice had a clarion richness at the time. Lyrical, round yet soft, without the hint of shrillness one detects in later recordings. Eberhard Wachter is a terrific Count, a rough, unmusical womanizer. Nicolai Gedda is the Composer Flamand. A youngish Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is Olivier the Poet, Flamand's verbal nemesis. Hans Hotter is suitably officious as La Roche, the Theatre Director, a parody of the famous Director Max Reinhardt with whom Clemens Krauss had worked in Vienna and Salzburg. Christa Ludwig is wonderful, as always, as Clairon, an Actress. Anna Moffo has a cameo as "an Italian Singer". This is a cast of which dreams are made! It cannot, will not ever be duplicated! The recording itself is subtext to the Opera. Perfection comes only rarely, if at all.
The 1957-58 recording, produced by the great Walter Legge, is in a warm, full and rich Mono. Yet Stereo recordings were available since 1953. Many (including me) have bemoaned the lack of a Stereo version of this once-in-a-lifetime production. Why was this recording not released in the newer and (allegedly) superior Stereophonic format? In previous reviews I have alluded to Legge's dislike for Stereo. Much (if not all - rumors abound) of this Opera was indeed recorded in Stereo. When "balance" issues (read that EGO) arose between several of the male leads, a Draconian "compromise" was reached, much to Legge's not-so-secret pleasure, in which it was decided to proceed in Mono and the existing Stereo tapes were destroyed. That must have been some squabble!
So this magnificent version of Capriccio is only available in a Mono format. Lately, however, I have stopped my whining about this and come to feel that Mono heightens the Chamber Music feel of the Opera. That it narrows the soundfield whilst simultaneously increasing its intimacy. In other words, it improves the overall experience. The sound is so good, the recording so well produced that the issue is moot. This is a recording you MUST have in your collection. It is one of those benchmark recordings by which all others are judged. You will hear what Humans can do when at their very best. You will sample perfection and the vision of the eternal that is the gift of all true Art.

Product Description
**Atmospheric indie rock crash landing like a futuristic jet engine on your sad melon** No Second Troy is a band on the verge of making the jump from the packed clubs of the DC indie-rock scene to the larger national stage. TMZ.com recently tapped the band as one of three Washington-area bands with the talent to "break out" of the DC scene, and AOL Cityguide hails NST as "one of the best unsigned bands in DC" Z104 radio listeners voted the band as one of Washington's ten best at the end of 2005 based on the strength of its captivating live shows and the infectious songs from its self-titled EP. Featuring the unparalleled voice of Jeff Wharen, backed by the band's subtle layering of electric guitars, synthesizers, piano, organ, bass, and drums, No Second Troy has found a way to blend the pop hooks of bands like The Fray, Snow Patrol and Coldplay, with the unique indie-rock arrangements of acts like Death Cab for Cutie and Arcade Fire.*** In 2006, the band's EP caught the attention of noted producer Ted Comerford, whose work with Zox, Virginia Coalition, Army of Me and a long list of other critically acclaimed regional acts had made him one of the most sought out independent producers in the Mid-Atlantic region. It also landed them a coveted slot at the North By Northeast (NXNE) festival in June of 2006. Having worked over the summer with Comerford and mixers Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Jason Mraz, David Gray) and Mike Plotnikoff (My Chemical Romance, All American Rejects, the Cranberries) this is the full-length CD.*** The band clicked, the songs were transformed from ideas into indie-pop masterpieces featuring Wharen's extraordinary vocals, and NST immediately caught the attention of fans and critics in late 2004 when XM radio featured some of NST's early tracks on the R/A/D/A/R Report, a show that highlights the best unsigned artists nationwide for the week. Only months later, the band won the 2005 OnTap Magazine Texas Road Trip competition on the strength of its

Rejoice! Rock isn't dead!.......2007-05-17
Not too long ago, I randomly came across No Second Troy's first album "Fall," which sadly doesn't seem to be available anymore, and I enjoyed it enough to keep track of this up-and-coming band. (In other words, I'm not a friend or relative of anyone in the band, just a regular person writing an honest review.)
I managed to snag a pre-order of this CD a month or two ago, and I have been LOVING it ever since then. In short, it's moody, poetic rock reminiscent of Remy Zero or a slightly-more-aggressive Coldplay. The album has been in pretty heavy rotation in my car and on my MP3 player, particularly the exposed, acoustic "Into Your Sun", the catchy "In The End," and the hauntingly beautiful title track "Narcotic."
The lead single appears to be "Burned," and while it definitely stands a fighting chance as a single, I think that "The Gardens After Lockout" absolutely NEEDS to get on the radio as soon as possible; it's got beautiful instrumentation, meaningful lyrics, a catchy chorus, tremendous vocal range, and it's been stuck in my head ever since I got this album.
To summarize, this is a wonderful, original rock album that can't be pigeonholed into any category like "indie rock" or whatever -- you'll just have to hear it for yourself.
