Her Love Filled the Room represents the current musical activity of Frances, formerly of Aurora Paralysis. A personal project that grew into a band, Aurora Paralysis – like Louisville’s Slint – helped define the sound that is nowadays described as "Slowcore." Andrew Beaujon wrote: "The music she creates has the kind of shimmering beauty and coherence that lesser talents (like pretty much everyone on 4AD) would kill for." Eight years after saw the emergence of Her Love Filled the Room. The initial release, Love, Hate & Dignity (2001), was well received by the likes of Slugmag ("Salt Lake Under Ground"), Splendid E-zine and The Midwest Ursine. The song cycle, occupying a rare space between Tapestry and John Cale’s Paris 1919, inspired discerning disc-spinners from Boston to Stanford. The follow-up, a CD single called Grady Lives on Planet Grady, marked Frances’ bold entry into the burgeoning field of Electronic Americana: it would reach #13 on the University of Michigan’s ! chart.

A veritable Wizard of ’02, Frances spent the year working on three quite different recordings. The March tour saw her begin to slip out of the confines of the three minute pop song and, by May, into a completely Other yonder. Thing 1 & Thing 2, a "cassingle" appearing under the project name Sigh Dog Sigh (Frances plus Salmon Patties), carries the football tossed by such august personages as Sun Ra, Albert Ayler and Peter Brotzmann. Having found her sea legs in improvised music, she next recorded The Three Spirits, a suite of autobiographical, rural American noise ragas (imagine Faust and John Fahey serenading a burning photograph over chicory coffee). Her next release, Like a Bug… ("Directions in Free Baroque"), will be available January 25, 2003 (the Chinese New Year).

Frances shakes up the conventions of the Southern Novel with The Three Spirits, the third Her Love Filled the Room release. Cows and barbed wire come like drops of House beneath a stampede of Free Baroque. These are songs from the future, from when the Kranky constellation and John Fahey collide.

i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age. two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car. she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd. during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

This CD is awesome, the music great, the story captivating. But it's Mozart, you already know about the music. Other reviewers have already discussed the story and I agree with their assessments that it's very good. The reason for this review is to say that my very active, never stopping, constantly in motion 5 year old SAT DOWN AND LISTENED without fidgeting or fiddling for a full 20 minutes and then sat but fiddled for the remainder of the CD. Maybe this is not a big deal to moms of "normal" energy level children -- but this simple act of being still for 20 minutes moved me to tears. I said nothing before putting the CD in, I just put it in while he was doing his running around. Within seconds of hearing the story start he sat down on the floor, crossed his legs, and listened while looking at the speakers. I have never seen this behavior from my child before, ever. Please note that this is a child who is not ADD, he just cannot be still. He listens to hundreds of hours of stories we read to him -- while he's doing something else. He "watches" videos -- while he's doing something else. He reads, while clapping or tapping out the beat of the syllables. I cannot remember my child ever stopping what he was doing to JUST LISTEN. When it was over he said, "That was a cool story," and got up to run around. That was it, but that's high praise from this child. To see my child sitting still for a full 20 minutes, you cannot begin to imagine my awe. I am running right out to get the rest of the series! Bravo to the producers!

To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, definitely one of the best, is the able pianist for all the numbers.

Let's be honest--any kid with a violin who ever set foot in a conservatory thinks (s)he's a prodigy, the next Mehta or Yo Yo Ma, while they play the same old tired music everyone else plays, exactly as the greats play it, with hardly a shred of originality that doesn't arise out of an inability to replicate the 'masters' as well as their CD players (and that goes for jazz musicians too, but they don't get as snobby about it). The musicians who are truly great don't have any sort of attitude about their playing or their music--they just play, and they play anything, and it's great.

Midori has been one such great artist from early on. She simply had the knack. You would still want to listen to her if she was half as skilled. Every decent musician practices assiduously, seeks out the best people to learn from, makes sacrifices in life just for the chance to play for a living (even weddings and strip clubs if need be), but few have 'the knack.'

I don't know if Midori has a similar story, nor does it really matter in terms of actually making music. I know her parents moved from Osaka to the States with her when she was about ten just so she could pursue her potential--as all great students have great parents. I'm sure she didn't just pop out of the womb playing violin. But, like I wrote above, she's got the knack that you can't get through practice or training. She's just plain great.

Yes, I'm bored by classical music in general. I like 'good' music regardless of style though, and this album is so far beyond good that it belongs in whatever collection of immortal artist you may have--say: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Shaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and--even if you have no other classical music in your collection--Midori.

I have had the cassette tape for years and have literally worn it out.. it squeaks almost all the way through. Need I say more? OK, I will.
Repetition will make you sick of anything, but this is one album I continue to reach for when I want to relax or just listen to beautiful music.
I will be ordering the CD within the next few days and am glad I found it here on CD... it won't be as hard to wear out and I am looking forward to hearing the enhanced sound of CD vs. tape.

This cd not only has the most beautiful rendition of Pachelbel's Canon that I have ever heard, but all the other tracks on this disc are top-notch as well. This cd is perfect to fall asleep to, and just generally relaxing. There are amazing instrumentalist that will take your breath away.

Everyone in my house loves this CD. We borrowed it from our local library as well and had to own one for ourselves. None of us has ever fallen asleep to it though, we like to listen to it while playing or doing artwork.

This CD lulled each of my five babies to sleep every evening. It is not "kiddie classical" music, but gorgeous arrangements of some of the most soothing, beautiful music ever written.

This is a very relaxing CD. It contains some of the most beautiful music ever written. We have used it for years to help put my children to sleep at night and at nap time. I sometimes get so relaxed listening to the CD, that sometimes I fall asleep, as well as my child. It would also work well playing in the background for a dinner party.

      5 out of 5 stars Hogwood does it again.......2006-06-13

      Once again, Christopher Hogwood and The Academy of Ancient Music have succeeded in taking well-known and not-so-well-known works and showing an entirely new side of them. Remember, the great composers lived in a completely different age, so we can't know their true intentions, but I must say that Pachelbel, Vivaldi, Handel, and Gluck would be quite pleased with this album.
      Here's a composer-by-composer breakdown on the disc:
      Pachelbel: The CD is aptly named. I must agree with previous reviewers and say that this recording of the Canon is remarkable, keeping the piece's harmonic beauty while making it historically accurate.
      Vivaldi: The B-minor concerto is tastefully played, though in some sections it is too staccatoed, in my opinion. The 2-trumpet concerto may sound "strange" with Baroque instruments, but the work grows on you after a while.
      Gluck: Both instrumental pieces from "Orfeo ed Euridice" are very well performed, and they contrast perfectly. Nice excerpts from the operatic composer stuck between Baroque and Classical.
      Handel: Ah, Mr. Handel. The Water Music selections and the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba Sinfonia are very famous (and addictive), yet the other works, from the not-so-well-known Berenice, make a good impression.
      Overall, this disc gets 6 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to any and all "Classical" music enthusiasts, even those who despise period-instrument performance. Pachelbel may convert you to liking it.
      Oh, and for those who want more, check out Hogwood's "The Original Sound Volume 2." That set's the same sort of compilation.

      Over the years I have bought this CD 5-8 times. Yes, I've given it to so many friends and each time I have to buy myself a new copy.
      Honestly, I adore this CD. I may have even had a tape at one point before CD was popular. Don't miss this. And if you want to introduce someone to the the genre this is an excellent choice.

      I am in whole-hearted agreement with the previous reviewer that this cd is a must have. With all of the over-orchestrated recordings of Pachelbel's Canon, Hogwood has let Pachelbel speak for himself by conducting the canon as originally scored by Pachelbel. As Hogwood states in the liner notes:

      "The fate of almost all "pops" is to be more frequently heard in adaptations and arrangements than in the original style and colours intended by the composers. This disc is an attempt by the Academy of Ancient Music to redress the balance a little by presenting some of the most admired masterpieces of the 18th century in their original sonorities, performed in a style and on instrumentation appropriate to the period."

      And Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music have produced just that: an excellent recording of many baroque favorites. In my opinion, this is the standard by which all other recordings of these pieces should be judged. This cd certainly earned the five stars given by each of the reviewers.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have........1999-04-13

      Do yourself a favor: stop reading and order this disc right now. Most of the recordings on this disc are my favorite interpretations of that piece. In particular, those of you accustomed to hearing schmaltzy versions of Pachelbel's Canon in department stores will probably find the Hogwood/AAM version to be a very refreshing change. Mind you, I almost never give five stars to anything. This is one of my favorite discs, and I've many.

        5 out of 5 stars Pachelbel's Canon: Meditative?.......2002-06-21

        Why not? I never considered Pachelbel's famous "Canon" as a calming bit, but it has a drawing in atmosphere to it. In that sense, as this version has me forgetting my surroundings, yes... meditative.

        Bach's "Air" has the pensivity you are likely looking for, as does Mozart's "Adante."

        The Budapest Strings and Budapest Philharmonic are well-represented here, as they are on all ten CDs in the collection.

        I fully recommend "Meditation: Classical Relaxation, Vol. 1", but for twice the price, you'll get all ten CDs. Come on... you know you want them.
