I bought this CD because I missed listening to the music my grandfather played. This CD brought back a flood of memories for me. Wonderful compilation of my favorite italian classics.

We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).

While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.

Could have gone to the library for this one.

Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

Shawn Mullins is a '90s acoustic troubadour whose lyrics, at their worst, read like overly precious journal entries ("The road is my home / And my spirit is wild"), making him seem sometimes like Jewel with a Y-chromosome. (According to his song "Twin Rock, Oregon," Mullins has lived out of his van, too.) But some of the baker's dozen of songs that compose Soul's Core have some bite, especially the restless "Ballad of Billy Jo McKay" and the gritty "Gulf of Mexico." Mullins is at his best when he plays to his strengths, which include an affinity for working-class characters and an eye for detail. Best of all is his sweet Georgia drawl, which pours honey over the aching "Soul Child" and the memorable chorus of his breakthrough hit, "Lullabye." Again, just like La Fave's Road Novel, I sing into my thumb on this one. very soulful and personal. The sound is so clean and his voice so strong and pure. I love this CD. Not sure if his others hold up...Eggshells has a funky first track that I can't get past but this one is just great. I think it's the romantic in me!

This is one of the worst cds I have ever had the misfortune of buying. I wonder how this guy ever got a recording contract. You can purchase a used copy of this cd on amazon for 1 cent, that should tell you something about its quaility.

As far as I'm concerned, singer-songwriters rule, and Shawn Mullins is now one of my very favorites. I love his own stuff, as well as his great Kris Kristofferson covers. I've liked much of each of his earlier CDs (purchased after I heard all of Soul's Core) but Soul's Core has so far remained my favorite overall CD. I'm excited to buy his new CD "9th Ward Pickin' Parlor," after hearing some previews on his website Shawnmullins.com.

Goin' on 8 Years.......2005-12-01

I kited this CD from my oldest brother while I was still in high school, traveled with it cross-country after graduation, dreamt about it while it was in storage during Basic Training, and savoured it once I got my paws on it again during AIT. After that, it found a permanent home in my car CD case, while another copy lives right next to my stereo in the house. It's a CD that has survived the test of time. From a brilliant cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", to everyone's standards of "Lullabye" and "Shimmer" (brilliant in it's own way), to my personal favourite, "Tannin Bed Song", this CD speaks of a life well lived thus far, and while slightly road weary, still has many miles, a few fixed tires and oil changes left.

As Bad As It Gets.......2005-06-29

My god, do people really listen to this? that song Rockabye or Lullaby is the worst song I have ever had the misfortune to hear. Thus far I've been able to avoid hearing the track in its entirety, but not so lucky tonight. I mean, is the guy rapping? talking? why is he talking for the whole track? why does he sound like he's wasted? The dude sounds like he's doing a parody of himself. seriously! The track is so awful that it made me dizzy! Till now, Bye Bye American Pie was the absolute bottom of the heap, no questions asked, unequivical, without doubt most awful piece of music that i have ever experienced. Lullabye is ten times worse.

For connoisseurs of Neapolian songs, these discs from Testament are golden, and no one sings these songs better than di Stefano. He has the charm and style in his delivery as few others have.
After hearing him in these songs, others may sound like mere pretenders. I can't recommend this disc highly enough if you like great singing and canzoni Napoli.

Pippo's Biggest Fan.......2000-08-26

Now this is what I would call one beautiful CD.It shows that Pippo was the greatest tenor in the world during his reign.His voice is extremely beautiful and the warmth and emotionalism are incredible.I listen to his " Non T'amo Piu " endlessly.You just can't find singing like Pippo at his best even going back to Gigli.This CD is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in classical tenor voices.They don't meke them like Pippo anymore and fortunately his voice and style of singing will live forever with his many recordings.Do yourselves a big favor and buy this one.

Candlelight, wine - and Josep............2005-08-08

The recipe for a perfect romantic evening is candlelight, a bottle of wine and of course - Josep. This is the most romantic collection of songs in a very long time. And José Carreras's sensual voice is perfect for this kind of repertoire. One of the really good things about him is that he's capable of singing these songs without crooning. And like always he makes it sound like the words are born within him. In the song "the first time ever I saw your face" he sings about that wonderful feeling we get when we experience things in love for the first time. Listening to him singing "the first time ever I kissed your mouth".... makes your heart skip a beat and your knees go all wobbly.... And when he gets to the part with "the first time ever I lay with you" you're drooling.... In the song "what are you doing the rest of your life?" he's singing "I'll awake what's asleep in your eyes. It may take a kiss or two..." And I'm out of breath again.....

Other favourite songs on this album are "besame mucho", "somewhere" and "the summer knows". The only song I feel doesn't do it for me is "amigos para siempre", the duet with Sarah Brightman. She's not a good match for him. I think she sounds much too "girlish". Still, it's just a minor "hickup" in this recording.

But really, you should listen to the album and judge for yourself. How he does it I do not know, but he sings with such intensity and honesty that you almost start believing in true love again. And in the end - isn't that the purpose of lovesongs???

Vintage Tavares.......2003-12-12

These songs are from Tavares'first and second albums and highlight their excellent harmonising and vocal ability.None of the later disco oriented stuff which diluted their sound is here.This is all pure R&B/SOUL.'Strangers in dark corners' and 'check it out' are moving soulful ballads and 'Thats the sound that lonely makes' is midtempo heaven.'Hardcore Poetry' is excellent and showcases the vocal range and quality of these singers.This collection is a must.The follow up album 'IN THE CITY' needs to to be released on cd as it is even better stuff.

I just got this CD 2 years ago and it is pretty good the reason why I got this cd because of the then club banger Oh Yeah, good song the album is pretty good a lot of samples in this one.

Nothing new or mindblowing, sound too much like Naughty by Nature. ABSOLUTELY NO STREET CRED!!!

Songs that stand out are "Frustration", "Hey Alright" (uses an awsome sample) & "Oh Yeah".

A magazine long ago called "Bon Voyage" a collection of "Paris and Rome favorites." So it is, and the collection is subtitled "Continental Souvenirs." "Carefree" tells us more about Percy Faith's personality than his travelogues - with all selections written AND arranged by Faith. "Go-Go-Po-Go," a strongly rhythmic AND melodic Faith original that was the "B" side of the single of "Summer Place;" now it's in this collection with several other great Faith originals, including "Lisa," taken from a radio play Faith scored years ago. Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. 2 on 1 reissue from Collectables, originally released in 1960 & 1961, features 23 tracks clocking in at 68 minutes. 2003.

Percy Faith is the master of arranging selections by other composers ~ take for instance this original two LP's on one CD "Bon Voyage" (CS 8214 in 1960) and "Carefree" (CS 8360 in 1961-all songs composed by Percy Faith) ~ his tasteful treatments always highlights the quality of the composition, ultimately making them a hit all over again. Faith's formula was always to keep the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive signature style ~ with the wave of his baton, the Percy Faith award winning orchestra is ready to strut their stuff.
