Damien Youth has always been elusive. Like Jandek he is prolific, Like Six Organs of Admittance he is inspired, like both he is American and has a penchant for the surreal. This disc is definitely a good place to start in his canon of doomy, fragile, masterpieces. Those with goth-phobia might beware. There are subtle melodramatic moments that meander through this record. Those who are fans of Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen and any of the current psych/folk sounds that are buzzing from around the world today might come to love this record(which is also available direct from his website http://members.cox.net/damienyouth/index2.htm for the bargain price of ten dollars along with all the rest of his releases which are all in print.) Check this guy out before he dissapears into the mist!

5 out of 5 stars Angel Demon of the Lost Chord.......2004-11-20

The music of Damien Youth is hard to come by.This prolific musician has been recording since the early eighties (mostly cassette and vinyl),but only recently have I seen releases appearing in the cd format.Almost all of his works can be purchased on his website.
His music is unique, totally.Imagine a blend of a spooky gothic Donovan; whimsical Robyn Hitchcock; spacey Syd Barrett; loner Nick Drake; and atmospheric David Sylvian (circa: Secrets of the Beehive).
Spinning wonderous stories within crisp acoustic guitar layers, the imagery so heavenly/wicked with mythology, whimsey, psychedelica and pleasant dementia.
I recommend BRIDE OF THE ASYLUM, HAPPY(2cd), LIVE AT THE CIRCLE BAR(2cd), and PARABLES OF FABLES. All of his full length cds are a generous 60min (at least)per disk.
Listen and forever be changed.

It took 10 years before everyone realized the genius of Syd Barrett, the same with the Velvet Underground, the same with the Soft Boys and dare I say, the same must be for Damien Youth. It's hard to explain the odd feeling you get as this album unfolds. The first song Damien declares himself "a little girl" who they call "Lucifer"! That name comes up again in "Katie Called Me Lucifer". I know why some may call him that. Lucifer was the angel of music and Damien's music can stir many emotions and thoughts that you may not care to confront and only a dark angel would make you. He sings of an "Hermaphrodite Jesus" he declares Jesus and Satan are the same being in "Mythical Light" complete with Bible references! Yet, in-between all of these hard hitting, catchy folk songs, he mixes beautiful love songs that you could play to your mother! "Fountain Heart" (A very Nick Drake-ish song.)There are songs on this album that stand out over others on first listen, but after repeated listening, there is not one song on this album that doesn't have something to say. A very rare thing for someone who takes such a minimal lo-fi approach.
