5 out of 5 stars Mario Lanza Opera.......2007-05-12

This CD of mario is absolutely fabulous. It is the only recording I have managed to find of him singing Nessum Dorma. It is not to be missed. One of operas greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-11-06

Hey, this is Mario Lanza, it can't get any better. A great collection of the best Arias!

4 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed!.......2005-12-13

I am sick and tired of all these technical reviews and critical remarks leveled against everything Mario Lanza did in his short life!

True, musically Mario made some mistakes....but so has every other great tenor in history....from Caruso to Pavarotti and beyond!
And perhaps he sang some arias with too much fortissimo....so what?
Every single song on here, be it among his best or worst work, is a masterpiece when compared to renditions of the same arias by other, more legit and operatically acclaimed tenors.

In order to "get" Lanza one must discard all notions of "finesse", "grace" and " elegance" for Lanza operated, and sang on raw, unadulterated, gut wrenching emotion.
THAT was the genious of Mario Lanza.

We can argue for another 40 years as to his operatic legitimacy...for nought!
Lanza was a VOCAL master and his approach to song was as unconventional and idiosyncratic as was his life.
That's what makes these songs so special and unique.

No one other than perhaps Corelli had the voice and the balls to sing with such uninhibited emotion and that's what this CD is all about.
It is a testament of a great voice.
The fact that Lanza did not have the benefit of a great conductor or teacher guiding him through most of his career, makes these recordings all the more great.

He sang the music as he felt it and that's a big no-no in the stuffy, overbearing and self-righteous world of opera.
Lanza earned millions of dollars because his voice touched all who heard it. His art brought more people to opera than all the leading tenors of his day combined....and this during the golden age of tenors and opera as a whole!

The only word of lesser praise I can offer is the inclusion of the duets. Mario did not have the temprament for duet singing, and subsequently he ended up drowning his partners out, or engaging in a sort of vocal warfare which was the case with much of what he and Grayson recorded during his MGM days.
The arias are great....the duets are medicore on all accounts.

In closing, I apologize for not having spen time on the actual songs. It's been done to death.
All I can say is that, if you wish to hear opera arias sung in a way such as will never be heard again in our lifetime, then this is a CD for you.
If you want proper, technically proficient opera, sung by some big name opera jerk, then stick to that....you'll only end up feeling like all the other good people who have so much negative to say about this CD.

4 out of 5 stars BMG Needs to hire Folks in the Know.......2004-06-15

There are several cuts on this CD that Lnaza did in fact record much better at other times. I have all his records LPs, 78s and movies and I wish BMG would consult a Lanza fan,or me,for the cuts would make the perfect CD. I think its great that we have such a wonderful collection of recordings of Lanza and this one warts and all is still one of the best. The best Lanza set was the RCA LP 2 record set put out in the 70s with Lanza on the cover in M. Butterfly. Where oh where can it be??? Long live Mario Lanza!

4 out of 5 stars Mario Lanza WAS a trained opera singer.......2003-11-13

To the reviewer from Michigan who said Mario never performed an opera on stage, you are wrong. He did two performances as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly before going off to Hollywood.

Mario had extensive operatic training from some top teachers. He was sought after by many opera companies, including the Met in New York.

It is true that some of Mario's recordings are not as good as others. He did various versions of much of his material, both live and studio, so of course you will find some you prefer to others. But the beauty, power and expressiveness of his voice is unmatched by any tenor I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best.......2005-08-07

This album has got to be one of the best compilations in its genre. If you are into male opera singers, specifically tenors, then you should definitely buy this CD. Imagine their hearty expressive voices coming out of your home stereo system. It might make you cry! (in a good way)

4 out of 5 stars outstanding CD and great introduction to these great works.......2000-05-12

These three are amazing and this CD gives you a great introduction to their talent. The music is soothing and relaxing. The Arias chosen for this CD are awesome, however my only complaint would be that most of them are short (2 to 3 minutes). There are few arias that are longer (more than 4 minutes). I found the short arias to be a bit distracting because I'd just start relaxing into a song and then it would be over. Notwithstanding, a great CD and definitely worth owning.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A nice overview of Caruso's legacy.......2007-01-04

Enrico Caruso was one of the first "media stars," with his recordings selling widely in the early twentieth century; he helped popularize the recording industry. He was one of the leading tenors of his day, and is regarded as one of the tops of the twentieth century (although he began serious singing in the late 19th century).

This CD features some of his "greatest hits," among which are his well reputed version of "Vesti la giubba" (from I Pagliacci, one of his signature operas); arias from Verdi's Rigoletto, including the bold "Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"; some of his most popular recordings from Puccini, including "E lucevan le stelle," "Recondita armonia," and "Che gelida manina." Nice additions to the CD are wonderful ensemble pieces, such as the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor (including the voice of Luisa Tetrazzini) and the quartet from Rigoletto (with Amelita Galli-Curci).

Interesting tidbits include his first recording, from 1902, and his last, from 1920.

All in all, this is a very nice representation of his work. I'm not sure that it compares with the old LP (with him in clown outfit) that includes Rossini's nearly unsingable "La danza," among other items. But it is a terrific introduction to the art of Caruso. Anyone who has not listened to this tenor's works before would be well advised to use this as their entree to his oeuvre.

5 out of 5 stars Unearthly.......2002-12-23

Forget toiling for a BMW, enjoy finer things in life. One of my personal favorites is ''Le pecheurs de perles'', but the offer is overwhelming.

4 out of 5 stars If You Only Buy One Caruso . . ........2001-01-03

let this be it! Wonderful, generous selection of his singles for Victor, most of them solos, but a few duets, quartets, quintets, and a sextet. The accompanying booklet makes a great deal of including his first and last recordings, but by far the most important here is Caruso's 1907 recording of Vesti la giubba, the first classical recording to sell over a million copies in the United States. If you listen to it, you'll know why--it's every bit as melodramatic as the minstrel show singles with which it shared the top of the early twentieth-century charts.

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Night In Paris!.......1999-03-19

This disc is a real gem! The sound quality is outstanding! Especially for a budget motivated label like Laserlight. Caballe is superb and Jose Carreras is even better. The love duet from Chenier is a great climatic splendor for the concerts finally. The only downside to Nessun Dorma was the last Vincero! was not held quite long enogh for my taste. But all in all this disc is worth dropping a few cents on. Buy it and you will be amazed!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Bastianini can really sing!.......2007-03-19

Ettore Bastianini is so awesome! The man could really sing, and I mean, really sing! His voice is so dark, so sexy, aristocratic, it sounds like bronze. He really was a vocal phenomenon. I was always interested in him; the rave reviews on amazon convinced me to purchase this CD, and I'm glad I did. His voice was gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars a voice of gold.......2003-02-23

I first heard Bastianini is Serafin's London recording of "La Boheme" with Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Tebaldi. I was impressed then and I still am now.
To possess such evenness in every part of one's range is nothing short of amazing. Bastianini's high notes are as rich as his lows and it is stunning to hear such brassiness in a baritone. A beautiful timbre is matched by peerless vocal skill; he is VERY well trained as a singer. Nothing is out of tune, a beat behind, or cut short for lack of air.
His opera buffo is superb; I wish there was a recording of "The Barber of Seville" with him in the title role. He truly has character when he sings comedic roles and his diction is impeccable; I don't think I've ever heard recitative done that quickly before. He is a little static and distant in "Eri tu" (I like it a little slower), but I think that, had he lived longer, he would have grown more into the role of Renato. Despite this, he is a true Verdi baritone singing with great civility and consistancy. Track 7 from "Don Carlo" shows this perfectly; easily some of the best lyrical phrasing on record.
Every song is done with perfect technique punctuated by great expression. He makes the change from technical singer to interpretive artist with considerable ease, especially in the last tracks which are live recordings of him in concert.
The orchestra and piano accompaniments are just that; accompaniments. And there is little effort made on the part of the conductors to intrude upon his singing. There is depth, but it quietly provides a very easy platform from which to simply listen to his voice and enjoy the sparkling clarity.
The recording quality is excellent mono that sounds like a very distant stereo instead of like someone singing into a box. There is very little static or hiss and the audience is barely audible at all.
Truly, an excellent (and rare) recording of a singer whose voice was a gift from God. It's a rather odd, but very special album that any opera buff should have.

5 out of 5 stars The gift from the Heaven.......2000-06-06

Ettore was the best and the most incredible baritone of all time. This CD contains many of earlier recordings when he switched from bass to baritone. And he sang absolutely wonderful. He'll take you to heaven when you hear pieces from Forza, Ballo and all the rest. He would have been a great Iago. He proved in this CD. He also proved that he was a great comedian in Barbiere and Maschere. What a pleasure and the gift he'd left with us. I can't thank him enough!

5 out of 5 stars supreme beauty.......2000-06-04

When I listened to Ettore Bastianini for the first time, I got very impressed with the pureness of his sound. His range was incredible and even though he started his career as a bass, his roles as a baritone are superb. His voice of supreme beauty reminds us that baritone's voices don't have to be limited and common. This recording is great. That "Si puo? is powerful. All the arias are performed with passion and beauty. Bastianini is a must to have baritone in all opera collections.

5 out of 5 stars Non ti scordar!.......2000-04-14

While there have been a few great baritones since Ettore Bastianini's departure from the opera stage, I feel it would be a great loss if we allow his name to be forgotten. In a recent survey by Opera News magazine, Dmitri Hvorostovsky named Bastianini as his inspiration and singing role model, particularly emphasizing a certain "dark force" of his voice. This says a lot coming from today's leading baritone. Indeed, the beauty of the voice and the impeccable technique can be a point of standard for everyone who came after.

Bastianini started out as a bass before developing the powerful upper register to match his rich secure low notes. His baritone is, therefore, the darkest you would ever hear, with a possible exception of Renato Bruson. Yet high tessitura of Verdian arias presented no difficulty for him. On this disk the arias from Un Ballo, Otello, Rigoletto, and Don Carlo are presented in a sequence, all of the highest difficulty and all flawlessly executed. Bastianini must have been perfect on stage as well with sound so immense it overwhelms the recording system several times. His talents also shine in rarely performed arias from operas "Lodoletta", "Il Tabarro", and "L'Amico Fritz". There are four beautiful art songs at the end of the disk. While Bastianini was mostly famous for the sheer beauty of his voice, I found his characterizations to be wonderful as well. Just take Figaro's flamboyant swaggering introduction versus Iago's dark brooding credo. It really sounds like two different people singing. Without ever breaking the line or sacrificing the quality for the dramatic effect, he was able to convey the very nature of the character.

Needless to say, I would like to see more recordings become available of this magnificent baritone. Since he's featured on quite a few Decca releases of complete operas, perhaps the company would treat us with a compilation album? That would be most appreciated by everyone who wants to see the opera legends not perish from audience's memory. In a meanwhile, get this disk that has over 70 minutes of pure joy recorded on a surprisingly good level.

5 out of 5 stars No one like him today.......2006-03-12

Jon Vickers is an amazing singer. Here is a man who had a relatively short voice and one that was very inflexible by nature. Yet in spite of these shortcomings he stands as one of the greatest artists of his era. Those who think of him as a Wagnerian tenor should sample this recording and hear his masterful way of spinning a line in the Italian repertoire. His Otello was spectacular, his Canio a psycholigical thriller. His Chenier an elegant and tortured soul, his Rhadames heroic in the true sense of the word. This recording is a gem!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Important Singers in the History of Music!.......2004-07-02

Dear Amazon,

I just got my combination order of Vickers Italian Arias and his 75th Birthday Tribute. If you ever feel generous and want to send people stuff for free, just send me everything you have of Jon Vickers.

Maybe I love him and the choral music of Robert Shaw too much but they were both just too magnificant at their art.

Now for review number five. For all who wounder what the big historicl hype is on Vickers, get this CD and anything from his recording of Messiah with Sir Thomas Beecham in 1959 through the 60s and up to 1978. Don't get me wrong! The man is my hero as a singer. I think everything he did throughout his career was marvelous up and on through his graceful retirement in 84, but it is this period in which you will get the best idea of this legendary voice from an artist who came from humble and unlikely beginings.

Listen to his extraordinary interpretations! Theres an incredable depth and forward inner probing into the heros he brought to life.

Here, he is given stirling support from one of the masters, Tullio Serafin, conducting the Rome Opera House Orchestra.

Oh Boy!!!

Get this recording of one of the most exciting singers of this or any age.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest tenors of the century.......1999-01-22

Jon Vickers retired some years ago, but the legacy of the recorded voice has gave us an example of great singing, and Vickers proves to be one of the greatest singing actors that the century has produced; possesor of a big, plangent voice, ringing top notes and smooth phrasing, and the fact that he sang many heroic tenor roles (Radames, Siegmund among others) does not mean he cannot fine down his sound for a gentle "Recondita armonia". I reccomend this CD to all opera fans who really want to listen great tenor singing of high quality. I wish that this release would have included "Celeste Aída" from the 1960 recording with L. Price. A word of praise also for the excellent playing of the Rome Opera House Orchestra under the great Tullio Serafin.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD!.......2007-04-10

Franco Corelli sure was handsome, and boy did he have a voice to match.Opera arias,is a great collection of his vocal prowess, and a great introduction to one of opera's most poweful and beautiful voices. He sings like a god here, and more than earned his title of Divo!

This is a great cd,to indroduce anyone to the majestic singing of divo, franco.Included here is his powerful rendition of nessun dorma.Opera arias is full of italian opera classics sung by this opera titan.

5 out of 5 stars Franco Corelli At His Greatest.......2005-11-01

Yes, this is perhaps 50's and 60's Italian tenor Franco Corelli's finest achievement on studio recording. These arias are the arsenal of every great tenor. They are arias which require a powerful voice, rich melody, masculinity conveyed through vocal chords and virtuosic bravura, all of which Franco Corelli delivers here. Franco Corelli started off as a baritone and even when he transitioned to tenor, he maintained a dark and deep richness to his voice. Adding to this particular tenor's allure was the fact that he was one of the rare tenors who were considered extremely attractive, even a sexual icon. His dashing good looks suited him for all the romantic leading roles. At times, he cut a better figure than his less attractive soprano love interests - Renata Tebaldi and Birgit Nilsson were never that good looking in my opinion. Franco Corelli and Maria Callas sang together (most notably in Norma and Poliuto) and looked like a sexy couple together. Somehow, even when his voice failed him, usually out of the stage fright he suffered, Corelli was able to execute mind-blowing performances simply out of his acting abilities and Hollywood good looks. But even as such, his technique is brilliant.

He is one of the few tenors that did not have to shout when singing. His increase in vocal volume was often thrilling without sounding shrill, always more on the lyrical side than the bombastic side. He excelled in the Italian repertoire, for he, like Mario Del Monaco and Giuseppe Di Stefano who were his contemporaries and colleagues, was educated in the Italian operatic tradition. Thus, his Puccini, Verdi, Bellini, bel canto and verisimo (Mascagni, Leoncavallo)roles were his greatest accomplishments. He did not fare as well in the French repertory. He had poor French diction and often mutated the language to sound more Italianate. Consequently, his Romeo from Gounod's Romeo and Juliette and Raoul from Les Huguenots and his Faust were never that great. Here are arias from Trovatore (Ah, Si Ben Mio and Di Quella Pira), Aida (Celeste Aida) Cavalleria Rusticana (Mama Quel Vino) Turandot (Nessun Dorma) Pagliaci (Vesti La Giubba) and arias from Nessun Dorma and Norma. He gets into character vocally and even dramatically as Manrico, Radames, Cavaradossi (not included here though it would have been terrific to hear his account of E Lucevan la Stelle). Quite frankly, Corelli represented the best of both worlds for a tenor-one who can sing beautifully and masterfully and one who can convince as an actor. The Italian opera department is full of dramatically moving characters. Manrico is a victim of his mother's revenge while attempting to become his own man and marry Leonora and battling his rival the Count Di Luna, Radames is a man torn between love of his country of Egypt and love for an enemy slave girl Aida, Cavaradossi is an idealist painter who suffers greatly in the hands of a Royalist, and Pagliacci, the archetypical operatic anti-hero, is a clown who loses his mind and is wracked with jealousy when his beloved Nedda is unfaithful. Corelli does get into character well, and vocally he essays the parts without any real flaw. This is a fine tribute to the late great tenor.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy this CD!.......2000-10-25

If you're even reading this page, then you should buy this CD. Much maligned during his career, Corelli has nonetheless proven to be the most perfect tenor of our time. Maybe if Caruso had had the advantage of modern recording technology, we would be singing a different tune. But the planets were in perfect alignment the day this voice was born! Be warned, however, that you will NEVER want to hear Bocelli again.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best tenor aria collection ever........2000-01-23

If you crave the best in tenor arias, this is your CD. This fabulous CD captures Corelli at his best, doing some of the most well known tenor arias. His Nessun Dorma simply cannot be improved upon. His performances of the role of Andrea Chenier from the opera of that name are considered definitive and his performance of some of the best arias from that opera on this CD (e.g., Come un bel di di maggio, Col pito qui ma vete) feature Corelli at his best. Likewise, his arias from Il Trovatore (Ah si, ben mio, and Di quella pira) are breathtaking and perfect, as is his Mama quel vino from Cavalleria Rusticana. His Vesti la giubba from Palliaci is also stunning. You simply can't go wrong with this CD if you want a collection of some of the greatest tenor arias being performed by the best operatic tenor of the last 50 years at his peak.

5 out of 5 stars Simply put... The world's Greatest Tenor.......1999-12-01

To all of those who think that the "The Three Tenors" and Bocelli are "Great Singers", get real. The truth is, that Corelli, was the finest tenor that we have ever had and I doubt any other tenor will match his flawless technique, his unbelievable control, and his incredible passion. I was lucky enough to see him sing years ago, and unlike that "Salami", Pavarotti, Corelli was also an actor and a believable hero in Heroic parts. When you get serious about Opera, you find Corelli. This CD has his utterly breathtaking arias from Il Trovatore (His first signature role), and mix of great vintage Corelli parts. It is worth it's weight in Pure gold...one of the only REAL five star CD's I know.

5 out of 5 stars Placido.......2007-04-11

I love any album put out by this wonderful tenor. This is one of my favorites and I play it often. I will be very sad when he stops doing albums, as I think I have most of them now.

This disc can make a hardened realist believe in miracles. The first is technological: superimposing a new instrumental background on "vocals" recorded between 1902 and 1913. To listeners who cherish Pearl's re-issues of the Caruso Edition, where the voice comes through in all its glory while the orchestra sounds like a village band several miles away, this is naturally a vast improvement. It is also strangely disorienting: with brand-new accompaniments played by an excellent orchestra, the vocal sound shows its age; instead of leaping out from its surroundings, it almost seems upstaged by it. However, the ear quickly adjusts, just as it did to the originals' orchestral sound. The second miracle is Caruso's unique vocal and dramatic artistry. The program features favorite arias as well as unfamiliar ones, such as the disc's title track from Giordano's Fedora and Canio's final aria, rather than the famous earlier one, from Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci. An aria from Verdi's Otello, which he was to sing for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in 1921, brings home the tragedy of his death at 48 that year. The disc includes some of his earliest recordings (with the orchestra taking over the original piano accompaniments played by the composers), as well as several he made after his operations, when his bright, honeyed, "golden" voice took on its famous baritonal quality: darker, warmer, somewhat heavier. In close juxtaposition, the difference is quite startling, creating the illusion of hearing two different singers. What remains unchanged are his incomparable technique and his inimitable style, though the early tendency toward what now seem excessive slides, portamentos, fermatas, gradually abates. His top notes retained their thrilling, heroic ring, his agility its effortless ease; his breath-control remained uncanny, his charm infectious. Perhaps most striking is his ability to create mood and character, drawing you instantly into the heart of the scene and the person portrayed. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars Quite a miracle.......2005-05-16

I bought the first digital Caruso CD, "Caruso 2000", and loved listening to it. Although it was more interesting than artistic. I found the digital process fascinating, however it seemed that too much was erased from the digital recordings, to the point that Caruso's voice lost some nuance. This CD however (the third in this series) manages to somehow filter out (most of)the surface noise and the original accompiament while keeping the voice mostly intact. The balance between the old and the new is also more convincing. Detractors of the Caruso 2000 CD should definitely check this one out. They might be surprised
