100th Window

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With dark shades of dub and songs that stretch with patient grace, 100th Window finds trip-hop legends Massive Attack seeping through your speakers with the same eerie intensity they mined on 1998's revelatory Mezzanine. The burden of high expectations has been a constant for this band since they released the classic Blue Lines in 1991. Under pressure to produce yet another record that changes the playing field of dance music, the collective has turned in a brooding, orchestral work that profits greatly from collaboration. The breathy, distinctive voice of Sinead O'Connor elevates a song like "What Your Soul Sings" into a deeply affecting, candlelit nocturne, while Horace Andy's stylized vocal washes through the string-laden "Name Taken." O'Connor also shines on "A Prayer for England," a remake of "Safe from Harm" off Lines, as her barely contained emotions artfully collide with Window's stark, distorted production. It may not turn the world upside down again, but Massive Attack retains the power to keep you transfixed and blissfully off-balance. --Matthew Cooke --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

From URB Magazine
Finding a perfectly hallowed ground between Pink Floyd, Mad Professor and classic soul, Massive Attack have always had the extra burden of being true trailblazers. In their wake has come everything from the Mo’Wax record label to the "Bristol Invasion" of the mid-’90s (Portishead, Tricky). Their last album, the dark and subversive Mezzanine, however, was a black celebration, as the band — Daddy G, Mushroom and 3-D — fractured beyond repair making it. That... read more --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2007-06-27

This Massive Attack album is outstandingly great. From the photographs in the booklet to the music itself. However, this one features less rap influences that Mezzanine and has more electronica on it. I loved it and if you like trip-hop or are a Massive Attack fan, this is a must-buy. Completely worth the money.

This is Massive's best effort yet. Seldom do I give 5 stars, but this one deserves it.

4 out of 5 stars Possibly too dark..........2007-01-16

If you come looking for a simple, happy set of tunes, don't! This time Massive Attack have teamed up with Sinhead O'Connor, whacky Irish artist, and in places it becomes downright depressing. It can be a grower, but if you want to get into Massive Attack, do it chronologically!

5 out of 5 stars HIP-KNOT-TEAK........2006-11-28

Well. This is certainly going to take some getting used to (and I mean that in a good way.)

Got turned onto this ensemble by way of a friend's recommendation, and when sampling the incredible music of SHPONGLE. As others in here have alluded, the group's misleading name made me ignore them at first. (So did Daft Punk's.) When I learned they were electronic, though, I decided to look into their world. I've sampled all of their music, and so far, MEZZANINE sounds like the only other one I'll explore. I don't want to incur the wrath of others by saying this, but their first few CD's sound a little too urban for me...my tastes lay more in the realms of electronic chill-out music, and 100TH WINDOW delivers that in spades. What's going to really take some getting used to, though, is the dark atmospheres this music takes you through. Remember the 1983 vampire movie, THE HUNGER? (Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, Susan Sarandon.) This CD sounds like music that would have been played in the chill room of the bar in the film's opening sequence. Which is not to say that this is BAD chill music...far from it. It just shines a light on the darker side of humanity from one track to the next, even in the face of Sinead O'Connor's spiritually-uplifting lyrics in the excruciatingly beautiful and haunting "What Your Soul Sings." The songs also have a typically-dark King Crimson feel to some of them (ESPECIALLY "Special Cases"); in fact, I'd venture to guess that if Robert Fripp himself had been asked to guest on this CD, he might very well have jumped at the chance.

The bottom line: I can fully understand why those who loved Massive Attack's first two releases are unhappy with this one. They're entitled to their feelings, but I don't believe it justifies giving this release negative reviews and/or low stars. It's a work of art unto itself, taking us on magic carpet rides through dark, icy realms that instill both fear and a sense of childlike awe. The electronics, production and engineering are all first-rate. The vocals, for the most part, complement the music well (some selections better than others). My only gripe about the disc is the electronic passage hidden at the end of "Antistar." I love ambient electronic passages, but this seems to have just been tacked on as a single loop, and as an afterthought of 3-D. Much could have been done with this section of music, and it was more or less just left to fend for itself. Oh, well.

At any rate, for those into hypnotic, haunting electronica that brings to mind evenings spent in the quiet company of others of like minds (and with a large plate of magic mushrooms on a coffee table in the middle of the room), this release from Massive Attack is absolutely essential. Enjoy your trip, and thank you for flying Trans-Love Airways.

5 out of 5 stars Whispers of Deep.......2006-09-13

Captured and hypnotized by something too distant to explain. My life has actually been altered and improved with the introduction of 100th window. I have no explaination of what to expect or how to describe the absolute brilliance. I can tell you that I've actually introduced Massive Attack into several lifes since my initial purchase several months ago, with nothing but positive response. I've waited a long time for something like this.

    4 out of 5 stars Everything I Hoped For.......2003-02-26

I don't know if it's the troubled times that we live in or what, but I loved the slower and moodier beats on this CD. Massive Attack continues to evolve and improve. 100th Window is the muchly anticipated follow-up to 1998's Mezzanine. Every track was great. However don't look for any highly upbeat tracks on this one. This is all chillout music, and it more than works. Standout tracks include Antistar, Future Proof and Everywhen. If you just want something to listen to that can help you drift away somewhere else, you want this CD.
