`Berlin Cabaret Songs' by Ute Lemper are issued as part of London recording company's `Entartete Musik' series or music suppressed by the Third Reich. One of the very best things about this issue is the fact that Ms. Lemper and London have issued the album in two versions. One is in the original German and one is sung entirely in English.

For starters, I strongly suggest you listen to both, but if you simply have no interest in listening to the German version, I will reassure you that the English performance is musically virtually identical to the German. The instrumentals almost sound as if they were done Kareoke style, with Ms. Lemper's English or German mixed in afterwards. I'm almost certain this was not actually done, as the translations probably changed a few things here and there about the meter of the lyrics, but I could find nothing in the instrumental or vocal performances to prefer in one over the other, except for the genuine experience of hearing it the same way as the cabaret audiences in Berlin would hear it.

Ms. Lemper's English interpretations, as they are in all her earlier albums, is impecible. It also seems to be about as accent free as you can imagine. Not only is it free of German inflections, it is free of a British accent as well, so it should sound great to American ears.

The first thing which strikes me about the lyrics of these songs is that to my ear, there is practically nothing which is critical or even satiric of a specific government. There is not even much which is sexually explicit, let alone lewd. Some pieces from Kurt Weill in `Mahagonny' may be more objectionable than most songs in this album. One thing that tells us is exactically how extremely conservative the Nazis were about any art whatsoever. The most strident politically oriented song is in favor of women's rights and makes no mention of the Nazi government or any other political party for that matter.

The only weakness of the album may be that virtually all this material is unfamiliar to the average listener, so we don't have the pleasure of seeing how Ms. Lemper does a new version of, for example, `Bilbao Song' or Jacques Brel's `Amsterdam'. But then, I relish any chance whatsoever to hear Ms. Lemper sing. She is still fresh and free of the kind of syrupy sweetness we get from, for example, Barbra Streisand, these days from her `Guilty Pleasures' album.

5 out of 5 stars Ute, Ute, what would we do without you (and these songs)?.......2000-09-02

This album is absolutely to DIE for! These songs, as everyone knows, are still very effective today, so it is schocking to think that they were first written in the 1920s and `30s. But when you are supressed (like the Germans were during this time) things come out. The rousing anthems on this album run the gamut from gay pride ("The Lavender Song") to women's rights ("Chuck Out the Men!") and everything in between. There are also wistful, beautiful (yet unsentimental) numbers like "I Don't Know Who I Belong To" and "A Little Yearning," though there is still enough room for sentimental propaganda, like in the very moving "Munchhausen." Ute's duet with herself, "When the Special Girlfriend," a lesbian pride song, is a hoot! Then there are the stinging, biting social commentary songs, like "It's All a Swindle" and "The Smart Set," which is one of the best satirical songs I've ever heard. The funniest song on the album is, without a dought, "Maskulinum-Femininum," which cracks me up every time. Getting these classic songs in English is a real treat, as it helps them speak to a larger (maybe) audience. Thank you, thank you, thank you Ms. Lemper, for this excellent album! The world is a better place because of it!

5 out of 5 stars These songs have not lost their pertinence or their punch........2000-07-30

Ute Lemper, perhaps the pre-eminent European cabaret singer of our day, does a brilliant job putting across these songs. While songs such as "I Am a Vamp" come across as snazzy, funny period pieces, others--"It's All a Swindle," "Chuck Out the Men," "The Lavender Song," and "Munchhausen"--have lyrics which are just as pertinent and biting in Y2K America as they were in 1930 Berlin. (That doesn't speak well for today's society, needless to say.) These songs--and Lemper's performances of them--are like brilliant mirrors held up to reveal the hypocrisy of the Weimar Republic. If you can bear the shock of recognizing yourself in them, this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars I love this cd!.......1999-02-01

I bought this cd in german, and appreciated it, but wasn't in love. Then my girlfriend went to see a production of Cabaret, loved IT, and i found more enjoyment in the german edition. The next day, I found this english version, and immediately fell in love with the songs. A wide range of songs (feminism, gay rights, anti hitlerism, and songs of love) pepper the subject matter. THe tone of the writing is racy of fun, tinged with seriousness and a bit of sadness. Ute's voice is fantastic throughout, she carries each song through thoroughly.

Album Description

This specially priced album features the out of print "Washed Up" EP along with previously unreleased, live material and two brand new songs. CATCH 22 have proven themselves to be one of the top ska influenced punk rock bands in the world along with bands like LESS THAN JAKE, SUICIDE MACHINES and the MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES. This album showcases CATCH 22's ability to fuse various musical genres into their own exciting and original style. The band jumps from horn laden punk rock, mutated classic rock, roots reggae and hip-hop. The 7:40 minute hip-hop influenced "No Love For The Roadie" is worth the price of admission alone.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-04-03

This truly is a great CD, maybe not Catch 22's best, but still a great CDs.First of all, as for the live recording, live recording is hard, plain and simple. The live recording are bad quality because they were most likely not recorded with the best equipment possible. Keep in mind that Catch 22 is signed to Victory Records, not exactly what I would refer too as a "Major" record label. Second of all, skacore is good and so is ska, if you dont enjoy skacore, i wouldnt reccomend this cd because atleast half of it is skacore.

2 out of 5 stars what happened?.......2004-01-25

Keasby Knights was a great CD, but this one just isn't worth your money. There are one or too good songs on the CD, but the rest.... just save your money, and if your looking for a good CD buy Keasbey Nights to hear Catch 22 at its best.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the ska?.......2003-11-14

When did Catch-22 turn into a skacore band? This is pathetic. The double-bass too-fast drums don't fit into any of the songs, which all seem to sound the same. Even the live tracks of classic songs from keasbey nights lack the old luster. Save your money. Get Keasbey Nights and/or Alone in a crowd

3 out of 5 stars Not Catch 22's best work.......2003-08-10

This is a very OK cd. I think if you like more punk/ska Alone In A Crowd and this one are for you. But if you like the more ska type stuff get Keasbey Nights, its Catch 22 at its best no matter what kind of ska you like.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent EP.......2001-07-06

The Washed Up EP by Catch 22 is a great cd, especially for the price. For $4.99 you get 4 songs(actually more, but I'll get into that in a bit) that make this album worthwhile. It all kicks off with Leaving, which is an awesome song with great lyrics and nice music. Next up is Hard to Impress, which is so good, that it even made it over to C22's new album, Alone in a Crowd. Next is their awesome cover of American Pie, which is equal parts ska, punk, and even hardcore. Next up is the final track, called The Death of My Blood is Your Indulgence, but this song is just a joke as there are no real lyrics. Now you may think this is the end of the album but if you fast foward until the 15 minute point or so, you'll get 3 awesome bonus tracks which are live versions of 3 of their best songs. First is On and On and On which is done awesome, followed by an altered version of Kristina She Don't Know I Exist. The song is done hardcore style, and excludes the solos of almost every instrument, but it is still awesome. The album then closes with an awesome live performance of 9mm and a 3 Piece Suit. It's done super fast and so awesome. All in all, pick up this album, you won't regret it, especially for the value.

4 out of 5 stars different but good.......2000-07-01

washed up! is sweet! it's not as good as keasbey nights but i still love it. even though it only has four songs it has 3 live bonous songs at the end, but you have to hit the search button for a pretty long time after the 4th song. Leaving is one of the best songs i've ever heard by catch 22, it mixes outstanding trumpet play with some hardcore gutitar. hard to impress is also amazing. it mixes different but cool trumpet play also with some really hardcore gutitar. the cover of american pie is the best version i've ever heard! that song shows you how much talent they really have. Get washed up! or you'll be missing out!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Ever.......2000-06-29

With a more punkish style than before, this EP is a good example of what Catch 22 is like live and what they will be from now on. They're not as ska as before but the ska is definitely still there. The fourth song is a play on hardcore stuff, don't take it seriously. The first three songs are so good. American Pie is awesome live. At a show I talked to Jeff, the lead singer, and he said that a lot of these CD's got screwed up so that's why u have to wait so long (16:00) to get to the secret songs. Also, they cut off near the end of the third secret song. Anyway, this band is so cool. I hope to God they never sell out, because then everone would sweat them so much. After a show at St. Andrew's (College Park, MD) they just walked around the place like they were part of the crowd > so cool. Blink 182 would probably have body guards or something, the sellouts. Anyway, buy this. It's awesome. Their next CD comes out OCTOBER!

5 out of 5 stars different but good.......2000-05-07

i've always been a fan of catch 22 (especially since one member comes from my town) and Washed Up ...although different still had catch 22 quality so any fan of catch 22 be sure you get this

4 out of 5 stars A bit less than Keasbey Nights.......2000-02-22

I realize that Catch 22 will have a slightly different sound now that their lead singer and guitarist have been replaced, but what makes them special is still there. Still has fast, inventive horn melodies. As some of the previous reviewers have mentioned, I miss the soft, acoustic guitar found in Keasbey Nights. The new guitars are good, but it's one step more toward other dime a dozen punk band guitars. The songs are still first rate, though I miss Tomas a bit. The live songs at the end are fantastic, and the cover of American Pie is great. Overall, a bargain, and a must-have of fans of the first album.

The night I got this album, I put it on around 2 am when I got home from the bar.

The lyrics and songwriting on this album kept me up all night and I couldn't take this album out of the cd player for weeks. I have been all across the states listening to music and I don't know ANYONE that is writing songs like this.

Yes, the production could have been a little better, but overall these are some of the best and most honest songs I have heard in years. If there was justice in the world and FM radio was not in its current miserable state of pay-to-play, songs like "Be Eyeless in Part", "Disappearing Act" and "Let me Die in the Summertime" (one of the greatest songs ever written) would be filling the American airwaves and blowing minds the way that Dylan did decades ago.

Pete Yorn is a bore and John Mayer is a pimple on the ass when matched to the talent and authenticity of Colin Spring. Long may you run Colin, long may you run...

Why didn't this album receive more acclaim? It's simply amazing, especially where the lyrics are concerned. I can't wait for the next album!

4 out of 5 stars Gutsy, folky, music........2001-02-11

Colin Jesse Spring's world that he sings about is full of junkyards and trailer courts and dreams that are lies. His first album, "Dashboard Tallies, Pedestrian Kills", was unadorned folk with guitar and harmonica and his voice. This, his second album, goes electric on some tracks but still has the same gutsy lyrics and spare arrangement that characterises Colin Spring's music. The only reason I give it a 4 rather than a 5 is because I think the lyrics were stronger on his previous album... but compared to the commercialized, homogonized gutless pap that passes as "pop" today, the score is more like 40.
