4 out of 5 stars This album brought back memories!!! .......2007-01-10

Lisa Fischer (being formally a backup signer of the late Luther Vandross) had a phenomenal voice. Let's say that it was a voice to be reckoned with. I am absolutely shocked as to why she is a one album wonder. I thought that she was going to stay around and never leave (like Mary J. Blige--- which I love her too). I just chalked it up to being that she was not given the proper publicity on this album. Luther Vandross sang backup and produced a number of cuts on the album, but I felt that personally she should have collabrated with more various producers in addition to Luther to give her more edge and various styles on the project. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, not to mention Babyface at the time would have been excellent choices. I am just wondering what happened to her. Is she back into the corporate workforce, singing in nightclubs, or singing studio backup for other people? I am telling you... she has too much of a great talent to let it go to waste, and this is an excellent album to have.

5 out of 5 stars She Can Sing.....But just didn't sell.......2006-06-25

First of all, if your wondering if this is a good investment to buy, let me say Yes...Lisa's vocals are timeless and if your a lover of Great vocal singers, then this is one of those gems that simply fell threw the cracks of the music industry. The songs are pretty good on this cd. Some of them have a Luther Vandross vibe which she does a great job keeping in line with the quanity of what Luther was about. I can't explain why she didn't blow up like Mariah Carey(though both have the same vocal power which includes an octave range from Mars) All I can say is if you like Mariah, then your gonna like Lisa, hands down.
Don't let poor management and lack luster record sales prevent you from adding this Collective cd to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-06-18

There isn't much I can say without echoing other reviewers. These songs are fantastic, especially 'How Can I Ease the Pain' co-written by Narada Nichael Walden. That's one of only 3 songs I'd heard before getting this CD. Chain of Broken Hearts and So Tender absolutely blew me away. So Intense was aptly named.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Voice!!!.......2006-05-25

This CD came out when I was in the 10th grade and even though I was really young, I always have appreciated stellar singing and Lisa Fischer is just that- a stellar vocalist. Just like a lot of other reviewers whose posts I've read, I happened to hear "How Can I Ease The Pain" on the radio one day and realized that I no longer had a copy of this Cd so of course I immediately went out and bought it and it only made me long for something new from her. I'd love to hear what she sounds like now.. The only weakness that I find with this album is that some of the production is not up to par with Lisa's vocals but I can listen to all the songs because I just love the strength and tone of Lisa's voice. Stand out tracks include, of course, "How Can I Ease The Pain", "Save Me", "Chain of Broken Hearts", and my favorite is "Last Goodbye." The vocals are just pure, beautiful, and haunting in the last number. I would recommend this album to anyone who doesn't know that while we do have great vocalists like, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, and Whitney Houston, there is a hidden gem named Lisa Fischer.....

4 out of 5 stars So Intense.......2006-02-19

I feel very fortunate to have bought this disc used from this site! I appreciate the follow-up comment from a previous poster regarding why after winning a Grammy, Lisa did not release another solo disc.

Her range, technique & the majority of the material on this disc are EXCELLENT!!!! When I listen to music from artists like Lisa, Regina Bell, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, etc I get a little sad because when they were at the top of the charts, we listeners had more of a variety of singers to choose from - each had and still has her own unique style.

The standout tracks to me are:

GET BACK TO LOVE - excellent production by the late, great Luther V allowed Lisa's beautiful voice to sparkle on this mid-tempo groove

HOW CAN I EASE THE PAIN - deservedly won her a Grammy, few singers in her era or in today's music scene could even imagine covering this song

SO INTENSE - beautifully constructed song

WILDFLOWER - excellent remake

Other great songs are: SOME GIRLS - sounds very Luther-esque but still enjoyable; SO TENDER & CHAIN OF BROKEN HEARTS.

If you are fiending for some terrific r&b sounds from an outstanding vocalist - get your hands on this cd!!

Album Description

This songwriter and mother of four, who lives a stones throw from the town she grew up in, doesn't fit into any stereotype. She's garnered comparisons to Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Dashboard Confessional, and Roseanne Cash. Her songs, as solid as Georgia oak, are played and sung with an emotional grit under the nails that comes from digging in life's mundane and less illuminated holes. These songs grab you with Lori's signature strident, soulful, and unapologetic vocals sharing earnest observations and stories of growing up and growing old, of loves and losses, winners and losers, guns and god, and drinkers and dreamers in a town that is resting uncomfortably between its blue collar roots and modern suburbia. Incapable of artifice, Lori McKenna speaks of the bitter and the sweet, but doesn't simply write songs, she documents her life, and in turn ours, in word and melody. Meet Lori McKenna and welcome to Bittertown

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Lyrics.......2006-11-22

I went out and purchased Lori McKenna's 'Bittertown' last year after hearing songs she wrote on Faith Hill's 'Fireflies'. This is an incredible album, definitely one of the best that I bought in 2005. She has an interesting voice and beautiful lyrics, particularly on "Bible Song", "Stealing Kisses", "The Ledge" and "Cowardly Lion". While Faith Hill (on "Stealing Kisses" and "If You Ask", etc.) and Sara Evans (on "Bible Song") sing McKenna's songs very well on their latest albums, there's no comparison to the original, though Hill does a great job on 'Fireflies'. McKenna's voice is not at all over the top or showy and it fits the songs she sings in a very pure and simple way. I would highly recommend this album, and others by this artist, to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Living American Singer Songwriter.......2006-06-04

And I say this based on hearing a single song ("Pour") from from a Putumayo World Music collection "American Folk". On that basis, I am going to buy the album, and I hope you will too, she truly deserves it. Emotions are conveyed intimately and harrowingly with a warm and very beautifully real voice, with her special twist and modulation. Lyrics are original, raw, and sometimes surprising with an insight that becomes much more apparent when you hear her sing: "In the depths of the deepest sea, there is a blue as blue as me, where a quiet symphony plays for the lonley, I could just let it all go, sink down to the world below, where i dont breathe but I dont know cause I am breathless" (and then follows a wonderful musical follow up which greatly amplifies the feelings). The music is beautiful, very appropriate, and carefully crafted.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, gritty, and a good listen.......2006-03-30

This is my first Lori McKenna album. While a sample of her songs and the comparisons got my attention, I'd say she compares to herself. She's got a stepped up-bluegrass kind of sound and the gritty, solid voice that made many of country's greats who they are. "Bittertown" is hard to classify and even harder to get out of your CD player. Give it a listen, I think you'll agree Lori's someone whose words are worth hearing.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite CD for studying!.......2006-01-29

I LOVE this CD. I listen to it often while studying - the album flows wonderfully...I find it hard to compare to anyone else, though I am a big fan of Alison Krauss, the Wailin Jennys, and the like, if that tells you anything.

Buy it! You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......2006-01-05

Lori McKenna has a grit to her lyrics and vocals that harken back to the greats of country like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. She also has the sort of lyrical imagery, roughshod vocals and sad songs that beg to be compared to Lucinda Williams. She is all this and more.
The album opens strongly with the driving desperation of small town escape that is "Bible Song," which still manages to pause briefly to show us a moment of her offbeat view of the world when she pauses in the middle of describing her a cousins's suicide to ponder "and how does she explain to those kids about the sorry thing Daddy did." "Stealing Kisses" plays like a prequel to John Prines classic "Angel From Montgomery." However, possibly the strongest moment on the cd is the spectrum spanning tales of addiction "If You Ask" and "Monday Afternoon." Lest you think all is gloom and doom however, McKenna proves she can do the lighter end of the register, with the confectiony sweet "Mr. Sunshine." The only weak note is the immature "Lone Star" but it is lyrically spot on and McKenna takes such relish in advising her old classmate "tell the girls in the beer line/that you're an old, good friend of mine" that it ranks, at worst, as a guitly pleasure.
Lori McKenna is one of the best voices to come on the scene in a long time--both as a singer and a writer.

This CD speaks to the heart. Fantastic, such talent. John Trudell is a true word weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual food for mind , heart and soul.......2004-04-02

I discovered John Trudell with this album and I deeply fell in love with this man. When I heard these album's songs for the first time, I was definitely hooked and deeply moved. I can't help listening to this cd again and again...The music, beautiful blues, mixed with traditional Native American voice and music, and THIS VOICE, John Trudell's voice - deep, beautiful voice which send vibrations and thrills through all my being. Everyone who hear such a voice can't help being under a spell.
And then THE WORDS, such words as "My heart doesn't hurt anymore, but my soul does. Maybe that's what soules are for, to take the hurt the heart can't take." And then THE MAN behind this voice and behind these words...

I wanted to know more about this artist, and then I went back through his discography and discovered more about the man too. John Trudell speack about things which can't leave people cold.

As a woman, a mother and an human being this man touched me,deeply...mind, heart and soul. Please, listen to his voice, please listen to his "spoken words", his music. John Trudell is such an artist, such a man, such a treasure for the humanity. I wish everybody in the world could open his mind and his heart to this man's words.

PS: It's the same review bellow, but I re-wrote it because a lot of grammatical mistakes!! I am afraid everyone has noticed that English isn't my native language. But I was so eager to share my feelings about this album that I haven't noticed the wrong words I used and the mistakes I wrote. But I wasn't wrong about my feelings, and the "power"of John Trudell's voice and songs.

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Sanity in an Insane World.......2002-08-15

I recently purchased this CD 'Bone Days' and what can I say? A superlative compilation of music, lyrics, spoken words and song. Highly intelligent and deeply, deeply profound. A delight to the senses. An emotional rollercoaster. Happiness, inspiration, sadness, anger, despair. As I write this review I am actually listening to this very CD!

I would like to conclude this review by expressing my gratitude and appreciation to John T, Angelina Jolie and the complete 'cast and crew' who wrote, compiled and produced this exceptionally fine and highly enjoyable album. Five hundred years plus and society, 'at large' seemingly and tragically remains very blind and extremely deaf to the Wisdom and Knowledge being shared so generously, with us, by Native individuals such as John Trudell. Yes, indeed, John "live and learn are the Seasons...."

5 out of 5 stars To the Bone.......2002-04-06

Again John Trudell cuts to the bone with this new album. He has been my hero for decades and each time I hear his words they still have power to move me. I cry, I get angry and I am deeply moved by this man who has touched the gods and come back with a message for us. I think anyone can relate to the expressions he shares with us. Love, happiness, blues, anger and fleeting joy. As in the title track of Bone Days " The great search for truth, every meaning has a meaning, Dark and light have their reason, Live and learn are the seasons."
His songs of love are exquisite. Like "Takes my breath" leave me feeling. . .

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic performances........2005-05-02

"Maldoror" is a unique concept, producer Michael Montes put text rom Comte de Lautreamont in front of Friedlander-- the master cellist read the text and improvised what he saw. The results are nothing short of breathtaking.

If you're not familiar with Friedlander's work with John Zorn and others, you're likely in for quite a pleasant surprise-- I can think of very few musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing who possess such a stunning command of their instrument as Friedlander does. His technique is overwhelming, particularly in pizzicato, and as an improviser, he is agile and inventive. These lead to the great strength of this record, namely that Friedlander can through his technique express something much more visceral than one would expect from any musical performance.

The improvisations are largely oriented on texture and space, whether arco or pizzicato-- each note counts, as does each lack of note. Friedlander may have an overwhelming technique, but what makes both him and this recording brilliant is his ability to make decisions about when to show it and when not to. "The Wind Groans", for example, is better served by long tones and understated delivery, to meet the mood of the piece he read, then it is by any show of powerful playing.

For fans of improvised music and virtuoso performance, this album is essential. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, Weird & Accessible.......2004-01-12

I bought this because I saw a piece on Erik and this record in the Wire, a magazine I really trust. And though it's not the kind of thing I usually pick up, I love Maldoror. It consists of dark and atmospheric cello scraping, bowing, plucking, and pulling -- all improvised. I know, I know, it sounds like it'd be really weird and inaccessible, but there's something about Friedlander's sense of melody, his technique, and his ability to compose on the fly that makes this a record a classy little thing. It makes me think of dark moments, French films, and John Coltrane's best work. Try it. You'll like it.

Debut album from Texas based Stride, featuring Helstar guitarist Joel Gregoire. The music of Stride is pure instrumental/progressive rock bliss. Aside from Joel's fiery guitar work, the awesome keyboard wizardry of Rick Flores is equally as intense. The music of Stride can be put into the league of Steve Morse Band, Planet X, newer Tony Macalpine and Liquid Tension Experiment.

5 out of 5 stars This Band Will Blow Your Mind.......2005-09-03

This band is simply incredible, especially now that they ahve a vocalist that can run circles around 90% of the prog out there. I'm not just saying that because they are friends of mine. I ams aying that because it is the truth. Check they're new album out Imagine availible soon, and also go support them on the main stage at Prog/Power. Prog On!!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Musicianship..........2004-07-21

The musicianship in this group is nothing short of phenomenal. You can never tell what arrangement of hyperspeed notes will be flying at you from one minute to the next. Very suspensful. These guys really know how to keep you on the edge of your seat. Haven't heard talent of this scale in literally years.

5 out of 5 stars SO GREAT NOBODY WILL BUY IT!.......2004-03-20

This CD is so mind bending it is unreal. It's like listening to a Steven Hawking equation in music form. Sadly, nobody likes really talented music (Steve Vai and Dream Theater being the exceptions) and it's a shame. The songs are real music, not just flail-fest exercize sounding tripe. So, in closing, if you like (insert succulant pop star here) or have your likes and dislikes spoon fed to you by Mtv, stop now and get the new creed CD. If however, you want to here something fantastic pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Best Prog Album I Heard In A Long Time.......2003-10-24

Do you love Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment and bands like that? If yes, Music Machine frim Stride is an album for you. Filled with complex time signatures and riffs, you will love it from beginning to end. The musicians are as good as the ones in DT. As a drummer, I always try to learn the songs I hear, but this time, it will be long before I know them all! I already play all of DT songs, but this album is a bit more complicated to play than the ones I'm used to. So if you are a complex prog music lover, hurry up and buy it!!

I was introduced to The Echoing Green on a compilation CD some years back, and thank god for that. This band keeps getting better and better. There aren't many albums (by many artists) that I can sit through and listen to every track without getting bored, but The Winter of Our Discontent has me hooked on every song. Beautiful tones, poetic and meaningful lyrics, and talented vocals. A must have for any fan of electronic music.

"Tapestry", the explosive debut release from the L.A.-based band MOJO is sure to excite fans of intense, melodic instrumental rock fusion! Tapestry combines well crafted original songs with spirited improvisation and interplay captured in a "live in the studio" context.

Kofi Baker establishes a solid presence throughout the record with his use of polyrhythmic textures and incredible technique. Baker anchors the rhythm section while making strong individual percussive statements in each tune. He is a drumming force to be reckoned with and continues the journey to creativity in the spirit of his father's work with Cream. The phenomenal Brett Garsed shines on every track. His fluid style is distinct and recognizable. Comfortable and assured, Garsed knows when to lay back and when to assault, demonstrating his maturity and position as a first-rate guitarist. Ricc Fierabracci's compelling bass playing stands out in this musical showcase built to display his unique approach and melodic technique. He ties it all together while making the bass sing.

All three musicians combine to create a rich musical landscape while redefining the word "virtuoso." Prepare to be fully engaged and captivated.

5 out of 5 stars One Very Tight Power Trio.......2006-03-26

I totally agree with Mark V. As you listen to this record you will think your ears are playing tricks on you. This is a very tight power trio into rock/jazz fusion and the production values are excellent. Brett Garsted is one mean guitar player and extremely versatile. On this record he reminds me of the famous jazz guitarist Larry Coryell while on "Big Sky" he takes a more rock approach, ala Joe Satriani. Buy this CD, you will have no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars Cream of the Crop.......2005-06-15

When I first played this CD I almost pulled my car over to the side of the road because I completely lost my concentation. I actually started laughing because I could not believe what I was hearing. Absolutely flawless solos and improvisations from some ot the best musicians I have ever heard. These guys are absolutely at the top of their game. If you're into hard rock/jazz/prog/fusion you will be absolutely floored by this CD. Baker does his daddy proud on this one...

Album Description

Battles Olé, Drums & Tuba's third album on Righteous Babe Records, captures the band building impenetrable sonic walls, only to smash them to bits like a hyperactive child who has grown tired of his toys. In many ways, this is a landmark recording for the NYC-based ensemble of drums (Tony Nozero), tuba (Brian Wolff) and guitar (Neal McKeeby). Most notably, it features the appearance of an instrument that had been foreign to D&T records — the human voice. With Battles Olé, this self-proclaimed "rock band" has managed to expand on the infectiously bizarre formula of its two previous RBR releases, Vinyl Killer (2001) and Mostly Ape (2002). The difference here is the songwriting, which is a direct result of the band's unhealthy addiction to performing live—D&T rips through over 200 shows a year, replicating their intricate compositions via a jungle of samplers and pedals. In a culture where 3-minute pop songs reign supreme, Drums & Tuba dares to make music that's full of tension, challenging ears, jangling nerves and banging heads. On Battles Olé, there's a bustle in the hedgerow, but don't be alarmed now—this is a listening experience of epic proportions.

3 out of 5 stars Sigh .......2007-02-02

Ok so I love Drums & Tuba, I really do, I've seen them like 7 or 8 times, every time they pass through my hood, I'm there, and this band is definitely best served live. I'm not dissin the recordings, as they are fine as well, and I've spent a many times listening to them. The three before this one especially, starting with Mostly Ape which was my introduction to this band and truly amazing, then the odds and ends of Gas Up and Blow Up and then of course the Live Cd, which actually features a song from our humble town.

Hey let's get to this record though, ok so when you see a band like this every time they come around and they come around a lot, you hear the songs evolve and that is an amazing process, and so when they started to add voice to the music, it was actually Brian Wolff the Tuba player who would run his voice through his amazing effects machine and the result was excellent, especially since it was minimal and used like an instrument, more for the notes rather than the words which you couldn't really make out with the thick effects on it in one listening. So when hearing this live, I was super excited about the new record, so excited in fact that I ordered it way ahead of time, just to get a poster and a special 7inch. However when I got the record and started to listen to it, I quickly realized that something unfortunate had happened. I would like to at this time point out that I have nothing but love for bands that evolve and change, it is far better than to stay the same and get pigeon holed into some sort of self standard that is one of the greatest killers of creativity. However I do have to say that, at some point this band took a sharp turn and maybe I'm not enlightened enough to follow them just yet, maybe they will develop this style into something as interesting as their previous experiments. The few things that have changed, this CD except for one song called Magnum Opie (or Epic as is listed on this site) have the vocals of Tony Nozero, who is an excellent drummer, but the vocals are just raw, with no effects, and the songs are basically indie rock songs. The layering this band would do live on this cd is now just straight forward rock, which unfortunately translates live as well.

I wish the songs I had heard live before with the Brian Wolff vocals would of made it on this album, and if it had been more half and half with the Tony Nozero vocals this release would have been good, but Tony's vocals don't change much from song to song and get tired. My favorite song on the album is Magnum Opie which is the longest track at 10:34 minutes and is instrumental, but I do also enjoy Four Notes of April which does have vocals but manages to somehow fit better. I still love the band and I really want to know what they will come out with next, but I would also love a cd of Odds and Ends of Battles Ole, like they did for Mostly Ape, as I'm sure lots of the songs they threw away might have been far better than what lots of bands put on their main releases. In the mean time I am exploring this band backwards to their first releases, and it's fun to see just how much they have evolved over the years.

This album still doesn't have the raw force in which Drums & Tuba envelope you during a live show, but it's absolutely terrific. Actually, compared to all of their other albums, even their previous one, Mostly Ape, it is infinitely closer to the genuine, live article.

On Battles Ole, D&T show a lot of maturity that their records didn't have before. They bring a very wide variety of beats and styles. Yes, it's very psychedelic and jammy, but there is no aimless noodling. Tasteful until the disc stops.

For those of you who have never heard Drums & Tuba, it's pretty wild. Straightforward and enjoyable rock and funk drumming. Looped tuba bass-lines and layered guitar. Rather effects-heavy. Other instruments come in too, such as organ and trumpet. Equal emphasis on groove and melody. Serious musicians, but also very playful. These guys are up there with the best live acts I've ever seen. The most amazing swirl of sound and energy.

I highly recommend this to anyone with a taste for unconventional rock.

Album Description

U.K. natives Intense stand for stomping Power Metal in the vein of their American counterparts. Brutal double-bass attacks, heavy guitars, and powerful vocals, as well as excellent songwriting and cliché-free lyrics, distinguish the band from the norm. Anyone with a preference for solid, thrashy riffs, glorious melodies and genuine Metal will not be disappointed. Be prepared for neck-breaking, head-banging ecstasy that brings back memories of Iced Earth's glory days. Bang your head!

4 out of 5 stars "Long live The New Flesh".......2007-04-27

4.5 stars. After their ambitious "Second Sight", which was loaded with great songwriting but in serious need of a production overhaul, I was hoping for a vast improvement with "As Our Army Grows". I am thoroughly impressed with the leap forward in both the production sound and maturity of songcraft. While this album is packed with excellence I still become a little crestfallen when I hear the repetitive choruses as on the songs "You Die Today" and "Fear is not Enough". But the occasional flaw is really nothing when compared to the overall improvement of Intense as a whole. The great guitar work is still there, though it is a bit flashier on "Second Sight", and the vocals are now up front and more explosive than ever before. This band comes across as a mixture of Iced Earth and Evergrey, with the driving force of the former combined with the fluid arrangements of the latter. In fact, this lead singer frequently reminds me of the great Matt Barlow (formerly of Iced Earth); though without the upper register range his vocals still carry a lot of power behind them. The final three songs, "Chronicles of the New Flesh Trilogy", comes across as a tribute to Iced Earth's "Something Wicked Trilogy", albeit with a Sci-fi bent to it. It is an exceptional way to end this incredibly solid Progressive Power Metal endeavor. Running time: (57:03)
