About the Artist
Matt Moerman-Guitar .........Implant started in San Luis Obispo in October of 1995. Ryan Krupnick (guitar) had just left the band "No Remorse" and was looking to get something else started. He asked Seth Price (Drums), who he worked with at the time, if he was interested in getting a band started. From there they picked up Matt Moerman (guitar) , who also worked with them and went to highschool with Seth. They began searching for a bass player and picked up Beau Price (Seth's older brother). Although he had not been playing long, he was a solid player with a lot of creativity and filled the spot perfectly. At this point Implant had found their sound musically but was in need of a vocalist. This was to be their problem for the next two years. They went through four singers in two years. They were all talented and down for the cause but were not quite right. Implant released a self titled CD in 1996 with their second singer but changed singers before it was even released. This left them with an un! representative product and a broke bank roll. They continued on with two other singers until they were introduced to Ben Ofstead of Primal Tribe (local Santa Barbara band) by Implants former manager, Rob Potter. Ben jammed with the band a few times and decided to move to San Luis Obispo to join the band full time. Ben was just the frontman Implant was looking for. They quickly recorded a 2 song demo to back themselves and began playing shows more frequently (mainly in the Central Coast and Southern California). Things were coming together when Beau decided to leave the band to have more time for artwork and tatooing. Everyone was bummed because Beau was a major part of the band and they finally seemed to be getting everything together, but there were no bad vibes. They found a bass player shortly thereafter. Johnny Montanio was doing booking for them at the time and decided to step in and play bass full time for Implant. Johnny had a lot of previous band experience so he came ! up to speed quickly and added his own flavor to the bands sound. Then, in June, 1999, the band headed up to Concord, Ca. to record a 7 song EP at Trident Studios (in 3 days!). Now with a solid line-up and an EP to represent them, they're ready to get rolling. Implant has stayed away from the down tuned sound of many hardcore groups, achieving their heavy/chunky sound in "E". Ben's vocals consist of a variety of throatiness, melodic singing, and stints of frantic/psychotic spoken words. In the past Implant has played with the likes of Downset, Coal Chamber, Machinehead, Spineshank, Fear Factory, Papa Roach, Static-X, Juice and Manhole, among others, and they hope to keep heading in that direction. Implant has dealt with a lot of drama (changing members, starting over musically, bad recordings, lack of money and shady characters), but have kept going for a reason; they're down for what they're doing! If you get a chance, check em out

In the last decade or so, remaking classic movies has been on the incline. Though older generations criticize remaking these films, the newer generations are happy to see them with the latest theatrical technology. The remake I am going to be reviewing is called "The Manchurian Candidate". In my opinion, the remake is superior to the original. Though the acting was great in the original, I am more of a fan of Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.
The synopsis of the movie is this: Captain Bennett Marco (Denzel Washington) and Sgt. Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber) were part of a platoon of soldiers kidnapped and brainwashed in Desert Storm. Ten years later, Shaw, a "war hero", runs for vice president while Marco, label paranoid by the government, eventually remembers being kidnapped and discovers that Shaw's mother (Meryl Streep) played a big part in the brainwashing. Bennett must now convince Shaw that the brainwashing really happened. Washington does a superb job as the hero; he isn't the flashy, perfect hero that we usually see in movies these days. Schreiber also does an excellent job in this movie as well. His character is the innocent victim. He is a good person but is under the control of his evil, power-hungry mother. Streep steals the show though. Her character is so manipulative and evil that is was just great to watch. The director, Jonathan Demme, does an excellent job guiding this movie along. The camera work that he utilizes really adds to the suspense of the film.
Overall, I think that any fan of suspense movies should go out to see this film. It is very creepy in the beginning and then gets better as you figure out what is going on. The actors all give an excellent performance and are lead by a great director.

Varese Records presents two versions of "The Manchurian Candidate", both are excellent films with a great cast, directors and score that will leave you with something to think about.

The first "Manchurian Candidate" (1962/126 mins), Director John Frankenheimer featuring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury, James Gregory, John McGiver and Leslie Parrish in a cult favorite of Cold War Intelligence mixed with a political assassination attempt ~ Harvey's portrayal as a brainwashed soldier is believably effective, his stepfather James Gregory (Senator Iselin) as the not to bright politician is a scene stealer ~ Harvey's domineering Mother played by Angela Lansbury is an Academy Award performance, when she's on screen her evil schemes cut right through you ~ with composer David Amram throwing cues at you "QUEEN OF DIAMONDS", "SLIGHTLY MANCHURIAN BLUES" and "MESOPOTAMAN MAMBO...but my pick from this score is "THEME FROM THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, the jazz version is a sure-fire winner with over five minutes of great JAZZ!

Second score from "Manchurian Candidate" (2004/130 mins), Director Jonathan Demme featuring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Liev Schrieber, Jon Voight and Kimberly Elise with an update of a classic thriller ~ Washington's facial and shifting eyes lends an intense factor to this remake, and it works ~ the score by Rachel Portman and Wyclef Jean with cues like "FORTUNATE SON" [instrumental], "MIND DRUGS", "DEEP IMPLANT BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION", "WHAT IF ALL THIS IS A DREAM?", "THERE ARE ALWAYS CASULATIES IN WAR" loaded with psychological-political themes and biting assassination spell-binding plots keeps you on the edge of your chair...presidential election mixed with mental illiness that Portman's score covers, as she crosses every "T" and dots all of the "I'z"...don't miss picking up this soundtrack...a must have for all "film-score-buffs" and collectors alike!

5 out of 5 stars Still as fresh as when it was new!.......2006-08-18

I was going through old cds that I found in a box and stumbled across this one. I plugged it in thinking 'this is gonna sound old and stale'. I was suprised when it didn't. I then remembered why it had always been my favorite Front Line Assembly album. Since my finding of this old gem I"ve gotten a couple newer FLA albums and in my opinion..TNI still is one of their best if not the best music FLA ever made. If you like good electronic music done right, this album is a must have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars a real must for all FLA fans!.......2005-11-20

If you are a FLA fan and you still don't own this gem, you should repair right away!! I live in Italy and never had the chance to find this album in the shops. When I could afford a credit card though, this was my first online purchase (from Germany) and I'm currently so happy with it! It's my fave FLA album ever, it contains certain hits which made the history of EBM, it's very tough and got the right amount of electronics and industrial in it (not heavy like Millennium, nor electro like Flavour of the weak). It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The good shines out..........2005-06-10

Tactical Neural Implant(TNI) is a great album for its time. They manage to make a cohesive and engulfing synth/keyboard noises that are held together by hammering drums which have a somewhat dancy rhythm too, but the music is so complex and never repetitive enough to be considered dance music. Leeb's vocals are at one of their weaker points, but that fits albums style perfectly, as it is much more mechanical and less organic than any of their other albums, and his voice comes across as a grating vent-like rasp(some of the sounds he makes are almost as if someone poked a hole in his lung while he was singing and the air just rushed out in a wheeze). But when he has to he soars into lighter parts that make him one of the most enchanting vocalists I have ever heard(though he does get better at it on Hard Wired and Epitaph).

Overall one of their stronger efforts, though you can tell that they are somewhat held back by the technology available to them.(drum machine COUGH COUGH)

5 out of 5 stars sheer genius!.......2005-03-30

You will not be sorry. This is pure brilliance. Quintessential it is. The building of a song -- the foreplay leading to the climax -- FLA does this flawlessly -- each component, each layer, perfect and deliberate. These are beautifully crafted pieces. Other adjectives apply: magnificent, mesmerizing, exhilirating, intensely moving and fully satisfying -- satisfying but making us want MORE MORE MORE!!

5 out of 5 stars Tactical Neural Implant ~ Front Line Assembly.......2005-03-24

This is such an good industrial album, that I was sitting and listening to it and all the adjectives that I wanted to use seemed not good enough. However, if I have to put one then it has to be these, brilliant, astounding, stupendous and awesome. This is probably one of the best industrial albums of all time. The first track is good and then it just gets better and better. In fact the first track is not as good as the other ones and could have been replaced with another track. The book-let is ok but the lyrics are missing, but still it is an important release since it showed that inudtrial bands are tallented muisicians and can sing. Minphaser, Life Line, Guna are some of the best made industrial tracks ever with the intricate layers of sounds, bets and samples. The keyboard sounds are constantly amazing and this is an album not to be missed if one likes industrial music.

5 out of 5 stars The essential cyberpunk album.......2007-01-15

Cyberpunk is a science fiction genre typified by a dark, realistic future wherein man is overcome by machines or, as is more often the case, man and technology fuse into one being. The Matrix and Terminator movies are good examples. Musically, Tactical Neural Implant is pure cyberpunk. FLA are no strangers to forecasting a dark, yet somehow fascinating future. Ironically, the band produces dark electronic music while simultaneously warning against an eventual dominance of machine over man. Even the title of the album conveys this fusion of man and machine.

"So what?" you may ask. At only eight tracks, it seems hardly worth the price...but what magnificent tracks those eight are. This album contains both "The Blade" and "Mindphaser," two of the greatest hits FLA ever produced. The six other songs do much to offer support. The end product is a must have for any Industrial/EBM fan. The first track grabs you and the rest of the album never lets go throughout. As usual, FLA combines eerie pads, pulsing synths, driving guitar riffs, and danceable beats. Songs slowly build into an elaborate soundscape, painting with music the dark world of the very near future. Yet, here they do so with great precision and flawless execution.

FLA also employs sampling, and although the group is one of the best samplers around, here, as in the rest of the album, they are at their finest. Lines such as "Jesus had days like this" and "A unique combination of software and organic systems" add nuance to the songs and do not become a distraction. After repeated listening, you may find yourself speaking or lip-syncing to these phrases.

Overall, this album represents the best FLA, or most any band, has ever been or may ever be. This is one of those rare benchmark albums, those few masterpieces which forever define a band. This is a must have for your collection. The singles for "The Blade" and "Mindphaser" have additional tracks that will signify that during this period, FLA was the very best at their game.

Two final words, absolute perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Industrial fans!.......2005-01-27

I'm slowly filling up my new Ipod 20gb and I stumbled onto this CD. It's one of the few frontline cd's I have. I just finished loading up my Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 cd's and now this one.

I'd have to say it has some real, strong songs on it. Final Impact starts it off with Blade and Mindphaser finishing off a good 3 song set. I then liked #7 Gun with its slow intro that builds up speed. Then Lifeline finishes the cd with a pretty good melody.

All in all a great cd to own, if you can find it. I'll have to check out Epitaph like the other reviewer recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A solid album by Evil's Toy.......2000-10-26

After hearing the more recent albums of Evil's Toy first, I was a bit skeptical as to how I would regard XTC Implant. But I shouldn't have worried, because it has an addictive sound of it's own. The beats of the songs here are faster than those found on Human Refuse, Morbid Mind, and the more recent Angels Only!. If you have heard Illusion, you know pretty much what to expect. If you are a long time Evil's Toy fan and do not yet have this album for some reason, go ahead and purchase it. If you are unfamiliar with Evil's Toy, I recommend having a listen to Angels Only!, which is in my opinion their best release.

5 out of 5 stars scarily good!.......1999-04-04

While almost every Evils Toy review tells us that this German duo doesn't add anything new to the genre, this CD is a pure finished electronic music masterpiece! On the XTC Implant the band achieves perfection, creating agressive electronic body music with strong gothic undertones. It's something you can dance to in a club or get depressed to behind the locked door of your room...

5 out of 5 stars Best EBM Album of 1997?.......1999-03-18

It's really cool when a band you know and, well, kinda like comes out with something that totally blows your expectations away. This is what listening to XTC Implant for the first time was like for me. It's simply EBM/Techno at it's best. Those fond of the X Marks the Pedwalk sound will like this guaranteed, as Sevren Ni-Arb helped produce this fine work (and I believe it was recorded in his studio as well), but make no mistake; these two are no XMTP clones. Thorsten Brenda (i think he's the one who's the singer) has simply the best voice in the ebm world, alternating between seething, hissing, singing and droning out this spiteful robotic voice that leaves you in your chair saying "DAMN!". In addition, the programming is crisp, clean and sharp, and the grooves are catchy. As an added bonus, there are a lot of cool vocorder effects for the gearheads like me. All this and more make this my fave ebm recording to come out in 1997, and it's a must for any fan of the genre. Get it NOW! hehe

An even more obvious dance assault, Implant's new sound is probably the furthest away from traditional electro they have ever been. Introducing a clear influence of ethnic instruments and rhythms, but still remaining faithful to the original ideas behind the scene, creating intelligent electronic music with a dark edge. For those of you that are looking for a new form of dance oriented electro, Implant is definitely the band to be discovered. Get ready for more harder, catchier, and even trancier sounds than their recent releases. Because to this band, technology is a playground.
