Album Description
Still ironically considered new artists, Fertile Ground has seven years, countless performances, and dozens of recordings to their credit. After 2 years of extensive touring, writing and recording, the group has unveiled their fourth full-length masterpiece, simply entitled Black Is
the highly-anticipated CD, is the sequel to the acclaimed 2002 release Seasons Change. This fourth full-length album, which will be internationally released and supported by an extensive world tour, contains a range of ethereal classics such as the title track, Black Is
, a soulful jazz waltz ballad full of affirmation, the joyful noise of Live In the Light; and the introspectively revealing song Naked, which gives us an example of how to truly connect with and reflect each other.

Fertile Ground is outstanding and uplifting. I went to one of their live concerts without knowing too much about them. I am forever more a fan. "Black is" is a CD that will make you move and drift into meditation all at the same time. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! Spiritual War is also good as well; I haven't purchased yet, BUT I WILL!!!!
big props for being original AND good..........2005-07-26

Absolutely peerless.......2005-06-03
I bought this CD after having seen Fertile Ground perform live in April. All I can say is Wow! Their music is spiritual, yet fun and lively -- they had people dancing in the crowded aisles of the theater. This is real music folks.
Fertile Ground's style encompasses jazz, reggae, samba with a little hip hop for good measure. And what can I say about Navasha Daya's voice? This vocalist sounds a lot like Phyllis Hyman to me, but far from being a soundalike, Daya is definitely a unique talent. She is a commanding presence not just because of her powerful set of pipes, but she has a way of engaging the audience that makes you want to watch this group all night. And the band does not play second fiddle to her voice because they can all hold their own. That is the hallmark of a good group -- when the musicians get to shine as much as the vocalist. As good their live show is, the CD is even better because you get to hit repeat as often as you like.
"Black Is" features 10 tracks along with some interludes and an instrumental. The title song is a love song to Black people that speaks to inner beauty and strength and exhorts the listener to remain steadfast. "Changing Woman" is a song that upholds the woman's various roles in life and is billed as a tribute to a native spirit. This is a balanced CD with some uptempo music that will make you groove, as well as some slower thought-provoking tracks.
This is definitely music for those of us with more on our minds than the latest dance step and material goods. I recommend it.

Great Group!.......2006-06-06
I purchased their first CD, Spiritual Warfare, a few years ago when I saw them live in Baltimore. They are just as awesome live as they are on the CD. I own all of their works including Remixed which was sold overseas before it came to the US. It too is awesome. Their music is a blend of so many genres and the messages are always positive. They are the breath of fresh air needed!
ya'll late.......2006-06-05
If I could rate this album 10 stars,I would. I have been a fan since they used to play @ Morgan homecomings 1999 and eyond. As fellow Morgan University Graduates, I must give that home grown flavor much love!! With Maysa trading vocals with the ever so soulful and beautiful N'Vasha - superb. This will only get airplay on a quiet storm on a college radio station -like WEAA 88.9 Morgan State University radio--or even WHUR in DC (Howard University). They are the epitome of 'underground' and grew from word of mouth. I love the track titled - Culture Bandits--it perfectly describes the way the industry violates the music of today, but Fertile Ground, as well as other artists in the 'neo-soul' movement (I really HATE that term) make music for the love of music, not the fanfare, not the fame, or notoriety. I love them for that...and to see them live is a spiritual and soul-stirring experience. I wish other artist would take a lesson from them--be real--to yourself, and not be SELLOUTS!!!
Peace and Blessings,
Tina
Outstanding!.......2005-09-06
I was pleasantly surprised at the genious of this album. I am shocked that there is no radio play. This group is cutting edge.
Excellent CD.......2005-05-28
My friend came back with this CD from NY, 3 years ago, and I was amazed!!! The whole CD is strong. I still listen to it 3 years later. Amazing voice and instrumentals.
i had no business buying this..........2005-02-20
... i had a few extra bucks (no fareal such a thang tho, is it??) in my pocket and wasnt really expeckin to buy anything... just nosing around the local underground-music-record-store.
fumbled thru some r&b...
bumbled thru some hiphop...
mumbled over some reggae... then
stumbled across these cats.
(they was mixed in with 'house' & 'drum & bass' section... i 'ont know why... these folks is definitely NOT anything like house or dnb; not with this album anyway!)
anyway... i got to sample this before i purchased it... and i was (insert a word you caint say around yo mama anem) blown away!
not 'heavy and loud' blown away... but as blown away as downtempo, my-mellow-my-man-jazzfunk can blow a big brotha like me away... ...soft and focused.
yeah, very jazzy... jazz, um, ish... too much groove to be smoove-jazz... too underground-lounge to be some neosoul wannabe.
if you was gonna take the love of your life out to some late night coffee house for the friday open mic, then, these are the folks who'd be warmin the stage up when all the spitkickers got done reciting they flows, feal me?
some real nice laid backness....

One of my must haves...!!!.......2006-03-20
When i left home for japan for a year, i knew, that this had to be one of the cds i took with me.
i first heard the group on "da bridge" a show on wrti, temple U radio, and tracked the cd down.
A must have for anyone who loves soul music!
4.5 stars: Still their most definitive work, NOT to be missed!.......2005-10-06
I usually play this only once a week (for fear of wearing the cd out, lol). This is the kind of music my generation has been secretly yearning for ever since the music industry began concentrating on promoting empty hit singles rather than grooming legit talent for long-term success. It's a shame it's been that way of late, but everytime I come across artists like this band in my tireless search for something more substantial to my aural senses I breathe just a little easier.
Should you ever catch these guys live (AND YOU REALLY SHOULD; Navasha Daya-their lead vocalist-is among the very best in the business as far as soulful singers go today), just remember to support them by buying their music as well. Consider it an investment worthy of your hard-earned dollar.
;-)
Brilliant!!!.......2004-07-27
I take this CD everywhere I go. We need more artists like this. Thank you!!!
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!.......2003-02-13
This is an amazing cd. It will evoke so many different emotions. If you're as big a fan of Sade as I am, then you'll really enjoy this cd, as it shares similar elements as Sade's music. And like Sade's music, Fertile Ground's music is also classic!
I Love This CD.......2002-01-29
I First heard this music in a club in London. I got back home (NYC) and I found out that the group is actually from the states. So, I went to check them out at a concert in DC. Wow. I've seen Jill Scott, Sade, Maxwell, You Name it. Fertile Ground beats them all hands down. No true music fan can not have this album in the collection. I LOVE THIS CD.

Sara Thomsen is an incredibly talented musician who deserves a lot more attention that she receives. She has got a deep, rich voice that soars and really fills a venue when she sings. She's also got a lot of presence. Even on a crowded stage, all eyes are on her, as she's got such charisma. If you are looking for undiscovered talent, check Sara Thomsen out.

they sound a lot like thrice. a lot. well old thrice. thrice's new cd is beyond horrible. well musically they sound very very similiar to thrice and the guy's scream sounds very similiar to the guy from thrice's scream...which they never did a lot a lot of. but these guys aren't bad. i saw them live and they were pretty good...the frontman is a douche though
ps. listen to paper tigers by thrice and then listen to the first song on here.

If this is the new face of Kung Fu Records - I have one word: OUTSTANDING. These young men cut their teeth on the Vans Warped Tour this past summer - and returned sharp, polished, almost too clean. Mind-blowing gang vocals combined with throbbing chord changes - powerfull, full of energy, in your face music that is at once hardcore punk and heavy metal rolled into one. Early on in the CD, I had visions of old timers Blue Oyster Cult, growing into Queensryche (Queen of the Reich) or Pink Floyd (Another Brick In The Wall (Part III)), but jumping gang-style into the 21st century (shades of Thrice). Awesome first album - will leave you asking for more. These young men are on their way.

Everyone I know who likes FG got put on to them by word-of-mouth, so once you get "converted," don't forget where you heard it first... Anyone who cops their stuff is getting his money's worth -- automatically. This ain't no run-of-the-mill R&B. Matter of fact, I don't even think you could really call this R&B...just a hella mix of jazz, world music, soul, whatever.
I would refund your money if you went to see Fertile Ground live, and didn't like their show! Also, fa real: Keep your ears/eyes open for their connect, Olu Butterfly -- OFF THA DAMN CHAIN

Soul & Nu-Jazz.......2004-05-23
I dig this group. I got into Fertile Ground mostly because of a few random compilations where they had some neat work. The best of those compilations was Patrick Forge's PF01 of a few years ago, which featured the Oneness of Two mix of "Let the Wind Blow". But Faze Action's "Pure Braziliance" also used their CD as a fantastic kick-off.
This is a solid compilation of some of their works remixed. The first remix to "Spiritual War" is pretty cool and the Oneness of Two remix of "Illumination" is also solid. But to be honest, I got this purely for the "Let the Wind Blow" full unmixed remixed tracks.... meaning I just wanted the tracks without being mixed into a set in CD format. The Gacciman remix has a pretty sweet New York sort of vibe to it. Its gentle and not as beat heavy as the other mixes on this cd. But there's nothing quite like the Oneness of Two remake to the track. Talk about a track that takes me back! Solid beat, hint of jazz, soulful voice and a thumpin' "hey lets hit the night" vibe. "Peace & Love" is also a great track with some cool latin touches to it. And finally, I love "Take Me Higher". The WaiWan remix is a solid one - definitely different from the jazzed take on Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe vol III. But WaiWan is one of the masters of remakes, as is Jazztronic and the Bugz. Check out what he did to Banda Favela's "Samba De Ile".
Be warned though that this is only six of their tracks redone and not all tracks had the same vibe as "Let The Wind Blow". I didn't dig a few of the alternative takes; especially "The Moment" redone by Seiji and Agent K's remake, which is shocking because I've become a pretty big Bugz in the Attic fan. So I'd only really recommend it if you're very interested in this group. Also if you do dig their remakes, DEFINITELY check out Patrick Forge's "PF01" and "PF02" along with any of Gilles Petersons "GP" series and Phil Asher's PA series. You'll probably also really like "Bargrooves: Espace Prive" and the Paris Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe series.

Not enough stars in the sky to give this one.......2002-07-31
I'm a long time supporter of the assiduous efforts of James Collins and his beautiful creation: "Fertile Ground". This is thier third release following the beautiful works of: "Field Songs" and "Spritual War". The band built up a strong word-of-mouth following in the Late '90s by touring the east coast constantly, concentrating on small venues and night clubs. Wowing an ever-growing audience with boundless musical dexterity and an unparalleled vibe-building panache. In addition to amassing a sizable following, their self-released album, Field Songs, I think sold well for an independent release; soon, they were attracting the attention of soul heads world wide after Spirtual War. Paying homage to the jazz and soul groups who helped to influence and form their musical character, Fertile Ground has mustered up a soul master piece with "Season Change". This CD blends a mix of soulful grooves and eclectic percussive rhythms to create a majestic portrait of musical art they can claim as their own sound.
Like my Julie Dexter "Dexterity" CD and a few others, I grabbed this one 2 weeks before it was released, by seeing them perform on thier promotional tour in Atlanta in May. This is the best CD I own from any band in any era. This CD contains 16 beautiful tracks of soulful ear candy. Any soul head, any jazz head, and real music lover would fall in love with this gem. I haven't heard one person say anything bad or negative about this band. Navasha (lead singer),Marcus Asante and James Collins and the other cat(sorry can't remember his name/horn player) have giving the music industry a blueprint of tasteful music....... listen and learn.
