Almost Homeless is an engaging first offering from Walker and a cast of South Queens bar band all-stars. Walker and Ed Klinger his primary collaborator have been fixtures on the NY music scene since the formation of their seminal alt-rock band Q-South in the 90's. This disc reveals a more mature writing style which manages to be comforting and edgy at the same time. The lyrics weave a tapestry of love, loss, hope, and hate. The melodies are engaging, with harmonies on several tunes that would make Lennon and McCartney proud. The fourth cut "What Went Wrong" has a 60's soul pop hook that is so infectious you'll find yourself humming it in the shower. "Vacilador" (Steinbeck reference??) is an upbeat pop tune that will keep your feet tapping. "What About Now" paints lyrical visions not unlike a Hemmingway novel. It's been a while since I've encountered a CD that never seems to get tired. Almost Homeless has broken the one hit per disc trend of recent pop music. It's thoroughly enjoyable from the moment you draw the cork, until its crisp finish. Do yourself a favor, and pick up this disc, it will not disappoint.
