The follow-up to the ambitious Up Up Up Up Up Up finds the prolific Ani DiFranco striving to expand the range of her brand of do-it-yourself folk. Here she incorporates organ, clarinet, megaphone, and even an ill-advised rap courtesy of Corey Parker, whose father, former James Brown sideman Maceo, contributes saxophone to a few tracks. DiFranco, meanwhile, handles her usual array of instruments, taking on bass, drums, guitar, and, of course, vocals. That voice has changed since her 1990 debut. A smoky quality adds a layer of expression and maturity to still-angry protestations such as the title track and its whispery counterpoint, "Back Back Back." There's even an appearance here from the Unpronounceable One, a.k.a. the Artist, who lends his distinctive voice to the alternately dense and quiet "Providence." Regardless of guest appearances and new vocal and instrumental colors, however, DiFranco's ace remains the quiet, confessional tone she brings to introspective songs such as "I Know This Bar." The sound of her fingers sliding from one warm chord to the next is DiFranco at her strongest. Matthew Cooke

Atmospheric, Dreamy, Fierce.......2006-01-06
"To The Teeth" is another brilliant Ani album. "I Know This Bar" has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever! The album has a pretty dark and dreary tone to it for the most part, which works really well with some of the subject matters. There are also some heavier jazz influences that were hinted on "Up Up Up Up Up Up". The lyrics are top quality as usual. Amazing back up band! Amazing Woman!
Eclectic mix of folk, funk and progressive..........2004-11-11
A very eclectic mix of folk, funk and progressive. Much of it is very stripped down and most of the vocals are strangely mixed below both the acoustic or electric guitar. Maceo Parker is on half the album and Prince does vocals on one song. I found it a pretty mixed bag.
Great music.......2004-08-22
This is an awesome cd with some experimental tracks and some classic Ani. However, if you've never listened to Ani before and you aren't too into nontraditional music you should start with Not a Pretty Girl, Living in Clip, or Like I Said. Little Plastic Castles is fairly accessible too. If you already know you like Ani, you should definitely have this cd. It's one of her strongest studio albums and it's very well rounded. Buy it.
Ani's Political Pride.......2003-11-05
Ani DiFranco showcases her anger through her album 'To the Teeth". She expresses her democratic pride and her deep, personal anger through every track. Her style offers the one-on-one closeness to her audience. Every lyric is fearless. This is only one of her qualities that deserves tremendous respect as an artist and as a person. "To the Teeth", the track and "Hello Burmingham" express her anger toward the world and certain political values the heaviest.
She offers a wide musical variety. She combines rock, folk, pop, and funk. Her use of woodwind and brass instruments give a new, pleasing, and evolving touch to her tracks. Her guitar efforts more than accents her musical style, she also expresses her feelings through it. Few other guitarists have mastered this difficult task. She also plays the bass, the drums, and the keyboards on many tracks brilliantly. Despite such expressed anger, her voice remains beautiful, never losing its soul for a second. Such showcased talent proves that she is one of the best musicians of today.
Sadly, she's also one of the most underrated musicians in music history. "To the Teeth" proves that she continues to evolve as an artist through every album release. This is one of her most personal albums to date. All Ani DiFranco and soft rock fans will enjoy this album. Those that like her introduced woodwind and brass instrument sound will also enjoy her newest album "Evolve". That is the next step from such style...wonderful as always.
ONE NIBBLE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.......2003-05-25
We have been a Ani aficionado since her first self-produced CD was released too many
years go. On this, her 13th CD, she tries. She really tries. But Ani's stab at protest songs --- spurred by the Columbine tragedy --- are too preachy. And lacking her usual poetry, or at least the poetic justice needed to make songs of injustice ring true. We're also starting
to real annoyed with her little-girl voice, whispered to the kind of folksy strumming found in coffeehouses . We're getting old and need her to speak --- make that SING --- up.
Sorry, but we cannot sink our teeth into this one. One nibble was enough.

one of the most underrated albums of the year.......2006-12-25
i usually don't write on these things (im actually against it b/c who cares what other people think as long as you connect w/ it) but i thought i would write one about this cd just in case people were on the fence about it.
Aside from the lyrics, the best thing about this album is that it really is an album; it doesn't have one song that stands out above the rest; they are all equally good and as a result it makes for a great listen start to finish. So basically, if you don't consider yourself a "singles only" kind of person, this is the one for you. what else can i say except sample all the songs...you might like them all.
so let down.......2006-07-07
I loved their first record. Incredible! Very refreshing and original so of course I expected this record to be great. I listened to it once.... and haven't since picked it up. I was that turned off! This is an extremly rare reaction for me. The record simply let me down. Nothing to hook me or even let me grasp on to.
A little disappointed after the adventurous "Humanistic".......2006-02-04
I've been waiting, like many fans, for up to 4 years for Abandoned Pools to give us something new. The debut lp "Humanistic" was exciting and a little daring, combining Modern Rock with spacey production, bitter vocals, and atmospheric melodies.
For "Armed To The Teeth," the excitement, at least for me, was very sparse. The instrumentation, though very good, seemed very "more of the same" to me, nothing new outside of the Alterna-box. The songs all flowed together very well, though sometimes a little too closely to each other, like the album was one long rock-radio friendly ditty.
It's a good album, just not great, and not very interesting. These songs didn't grip me in like "Remedy," "Blood," "Seed," and most of the other songs on the first album.
It also seemed like songs like "Rabble" and "The Catalyst" would have been much better with different production aside from the scattershot guitars thrown in solely for the sake of guitars being thrown in. Even songs like "Hunting" which had a great piano melody, seems like it was covered up to give it more of an unneeded edge.
Overall: Good writing and performance, but there isn't much that shines and sticks out.
Tommy's new sound: two thumbs up!.......2006-01-16
Humanistic was an interesting album in that half the songs were hard-edged rockers and the other half light-hearted pop numbers. Every song was pretty much the same, structurally; but it was still light years ahead of any other mainstream release for its time. Several years later, Tommy gives us something new: the Reverb EP and Armed to the Teeth LP. The new stuff is different than Humanistic, still I don't see how a fan of one album can dislike the other.
Whereas Humanistic contained two radically different styles of music (listen to Ruin Your Life immediately after LVBD), Armed to the Teeth is a product of mixing both styles into one. A bad thing? Certainly not...I believe the album deserves four solid stars.
The most important quality of the album though, is varying song structures. You'll still sense the occassional pop-like structure in the songs, but Tommy has made a giant leap in terms of songwriting. The album doesn't grow old on me the way Humanistic does.
Bad points of the album? Josh Freese is gone (not that Tommy's new drummer is bad...but c'mon, Josh is one of the best in the business). And the new version of Tighter Noose is about half as good as the one we downloaded years ago.
My favorite song: Sooner or Later. I love the structural progression and long(ish) instrumental segments scattered throughout. This song is a great example of Tommy's growth as a songwriter and musician, it's not just verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, as is the case for every song on Humanistic.
It's an extremely high-quality album, an incredible sophomore effort. It comes VERY close to a five-star rating, and possibly deserves one, but I like to save that rating for truly special albums.
Great potential, but..........2006-01-11
Don't get me wrong, I loved Humanistic from the second I heard it. Tommy Walter, whilst not quite being a lyrical mastermind, had produced a well composed, interesting, creative, united album. The great thing about Humanistic is how natural everything sounds together - all of the songs complemented each other.
But with Armed to the Teeth, I feel like Tommy had a couple of dead on hits, maintaining a steady Abandoned Pools sound, whilst moving forward at the same time. And then there was everything else. Tighter Noose is the greatest example: the original version, released on the AP website some time ago, blew me away. I was very excited for the new album, but when I got to it, it spit out some overworked version of the song. In addition to making the rhythm slightly more ambiguous, Tommy changed the vocals to be more soft where they needed to be sharp, and turned to falsetto where it just wasn't needed. I think he tried to be a perfectionist with it, and ended up making things more complicated than they needed to be. Tighter Noose on the album just doesn't sound natural the way the old version did.
It wasn't just Tighter Noose though. There were a lot of things. Often the drums seemed a bit unnatural - they were too intense at the wrong moments, such as in Waiting to Panic, and Renegade. And in renegade, at the moment of explosion in the chorus, it really just seems like he was trying TOO hard... Often times it melds in with bits and pieces of, for lack of a better word, "cliches" in rock music.
I do take to the fact that Tommy tried to vary his vocals a little more on this record - a little more falsetto, in addition to other changes. But I think that Armed to the Teeth is a perfect example of individual limitation. Sure, it would've sounded great if he'd done it perfectly. But, either they didn't bother putting the time in to do so, or he just can't do it. I'd like to think that he can, and it certainly sounds like nobody bothered to make Tommy totally nail his vocal parts. If you don't believe me, listen closely to where he first enters in for Tighter Noose (very awkward sound that he makes). In addition to this, there are many other slip-ups including with actual intonation, and there is an example of that in Hunting (The Universe Breaks My Heart).
"But Nick, where are the positive remarks?" Well, believe it or not, I do have quite a few. I'll note that, despite its one little vocal flaw, Hunting (The Universe Breaks My Heart) is a great song, and well outside of old AP territory. Also, Lethal Killers and Armed to the Teeth are both great songs, even if they do lend themselves to old AP just a little. Rabble and The Catalyst, though, carry on their new sound much more, and, most importantly, connect Humanistic with Armed to the Teeth. Those are the [mostly] perfect, most natural sounding and unifying songs of the album. Everything else makes me question dear Mr. Tommy Walter, though, and I don't want to keep doing that.
And let me say that I too write music, and I know what it's like to overdo something, to under-work it in recording, and to generally make mistakes that threaten a song's integrity. And I think that that's partially where my dissatisfaction with Armed to the Teeth comes from - it's frustrating to hear an idol, someone I think of as one of those few masterful musicians, making the same mistakes as me.

incredible........2005-12-28
absolutely the greatest split ever released. cursive and eastern youth at their best. some of the cursive tracks are easily the finest they've ever written, from any release.
Eastern youth and Carshib are wonderful!!!!.......2003-02-08
I do not understand English. What cannot be understood Cursive therefore whether sing. (This review is lacked by
using the Japanese-English automatic operation
translation site. ).
I think that the cause is in lyrics though gEastern Youth has the very unenviable-" etc. are written by the review
which has already been published. I think that the people who had written the review published in Amazon[.com] felt
the Eastern youth tedious because it does not understand Japanese lyrics.
Yoshino of the Eastern youth uses an antique word for lyrics.
Lyrics which use an antique word of the Eastern youth are criticized , saying that "Literature" etc.
It is compared with the rock Group which says gelephant kashimashi" in respect of lyrics though the bytalk. Both
lyrics are antique literary style.
Please it does not care and read and look even at the translation because a very good lyrics.
-----------
I recommend the following band to the person to whom the interest to Japanese music was born by "8 Teeth to Eat You."
Elephant Kashimashi , cyuu-burari , happy end , foul , yura yura teikoku , Carmen Maki&oz D
a varied release.......2002-07-20
Okay, all I have to say is that Cursive is only a rather okay (not spectacular) band compared to Eastern Youth who are like perpetual GODS of music to me. Although all of their lyrics are in Japanese, Yoshino and co. play... well just GREAT music. I'm not good at describing or criticizing music, so just check out this page for their independent label ...
no words..........2002-07-12
amazing. simply breathtaking. just plain good. i got introduced to cursive only a year ago and i've never been the same since. it may sound cliche, but these guys just get better with each release. buy this. it's worth it.
Amazing........2002-06-25
God punishes good musicians.
Case in point: Cursive frontman Tim Kasher recently suffered a collapsed lung, forcing the band to cancel the rest of their US tour with the band they share this CD with, Eastern Youth.
It's pretty obvious that God's afraid that people will hear the gospel of Tim and convert to Cursive-ism. I'm already on my way, and this split CD just about pushes me over the edge.
Cursive brings to the table the best four songs the band has ever composed. While cellist Gretta has been a member of the band since the group's "Burst And Bloom" EP, this recording came out completely different with her. The main difference is that with the last EP, she recorded her parts after the songs were completed, as a sort of afterthought. Here, she is just as intregral part of the band as any other instrument. In "May Flowers," she lets her cello flow in the background of Tim's twisted guitar solo, making you feel like you're trapped in some kind of sick indie rock haunted house.
The other three tracks by Cursive are just as top notch: "Excerpts..." features some of the best lyrics Tim has ever written, a two-sided story about the breakup of a couple. It's intense lyrically and musically. The track kicks off with Gretta again shredding the cello, followed by the rest of the band launching into a complete cachophony of sound. Everything sounds out of place, but at the same time it sounds dead on. Cursive has this knack for making each song rub you the wrong way just enough so you'll pay attention. The flying guitar riffs, the time changes provided without haste by bassist/drummer duo Matt and Clint, the best worst voice in rock supplied by Tim - this band is unstoppable.
So Eastern Youth has the very unenviable task of following Cursive's output on this disc. Surprisingly, it makes the album even better. Eastern Youth is from Japan, and sings in all Japanese. Even the lyrics are printed in Japanese, which is frustrating because I *really* want to know what the lead singer is saying. Musically, it sounds very... I feel bad saying "Japanese" as that sounds stupid and possibly racist, but the guitar lines are very stereotypically Japanese. Picture the music you might hear played on the Japanese koto [sort of the Japanese version of the harpsichord] but imagine it amplified, with a lot of uptempo bass and drums backing it.
The band writes pop songs, and they're quite long - 1 clocks in at 4 minutes, 2 at 5, and one at almost 6. Do you even notice? Nope. Eastern Youth does a fantastic job of sounding fresh with their melodies, which is really hard to do considering it's being sung in Japanese, which the average American indie rocker listening to this will have no idea what it means.
So, in summary:
Cursive proves once again why they're one of the best bands on the planet. Even God was threatened by these 4 blasts of angular, distorted rock.
Eastern Youth shows that an unknown band from a foreign land can actually make an impression with a split release [unlike, say, the Ataris/Useless ID split CD, Jimmy Eat World/Jebediah split CD, the No Knife/Sunshine split 7", or probably a million more I can't think of right now]. I wish Tim Kasher the fastest recovery possible, and I still plan on seeing Eastern Youth later this month to see if they'll rock me as hard live as they rock me recorded. You need to own this. It is the best split CD this year, a true document of independent music at a crossroads.

Mekons are shambolic, glorious, messy, and inspirational. They've broken up and reformed about half a dozen times over their 20-year career, shedding and adding members at will. In the process, the collective (led by ace cartoonist and all-round beer drinker Jon Langford, haunting vocalist Sally Timms, and wiry good-looker Tom Greenhalgh) have created several genius post-punk, country-influenced, frantic, melancholy, and political records (look for Original Sin and 1991's haunting So Good It Hurts). It's very appropriate, then, that this new collection of rarities is chaotic--a sprawling 17-track compilation that includes collaborations with the Raincoats ("Gill and Vicky"), antihooliganism stances ("Mekons Vs. Peace Love Hooligans"), and covers of English nursery rhymes ("Oranges and Lemons"), plus the odd snippet of rancor and biting sarcasm, of course. Buy Mekons now, and change your life! --Everett True
Customer Reviews:
an embarrassment of riches.......2006-10-07
I have been to heaven and back serves two excellent functions.
It serves up to you a wealth of recordings previously available only on various artist compilations and a few alternate takes of tracks that have appeared on albums. Some of which I actually prefer; notably a full-length version of Funeral with an additional verse in the last refrain.
The other function it performs well is as an introduction to the Mekons. I'd recommend it to anyone I thought might be curious.
I disagree with the Bitchfork review that says it runs out of steam half way through. I say buy it, spread it out on the bed and roll around in it. All of it!
The Fall and Rise of Mekons.......2000-11-20
The Mekons staggered their way out of the Manchester UK punk scene some years ago. The best simple descriptive terms for their music is, "cynical, revolutionary folk-punk". Imagine a crazed scenario where The Clash meets Fairport Convention....revolutionary sentiments, drunken reggae beats and bits of quirky folk music coalescing into a new and grand coalition. This band is intelligent and darkly funny, mixing bits of Marxist rhetoric, gay politics, ruminations on the British Empire and stabs at historical figures ranging from Churchill to Nixon to Freud with evident glee. "I've Been to Heaven and Back" is essentially a collection of out-takes. Many of these are culled from "The Mekon's Rock and Roll" sessions, a hard to find album that qualifies as the Mekon's desert island CD, or, "Exile on Main Street" in terms of tattered glory. "Heaven and Back" is notable for the cover version of Rod Stewart's, "You wear it well". The Mekons seem to be a thriving, underground cottage industry these days. Various members are active in the American alt-folk scene. "To Heaven and Back Again" is a fine introduction to one of Britain's great unknown bands.

Album Description
"Beat. It" is raw 60's drenched fuel to feed a world dominated by an otherwise anemic and bland soundscape. How Hammond organ funk is meant to be heard.
"Beat. It" is also the sound for the 2004 motion picture "Wilson Chance" (Bunzendahl Brothers Productions), which provided 5 songs to sit side-by-side with a fresh score by 007 guitar legend Vic Flick. And if that wasn't enough, the meeting of the Link Quartet, Hammondbeat, and Wilson Chance has resulted in a special soundtrack album ("The Sound of Danger", March 2, 2004) featuring over 70 minutes of new music, also available at Amazon!
Next up...listen for the next Link Quartet album "Italian Playboys International" (May 2004).

Always excellent pop!.......2004-12-06
I believe Tiger Teeth EP was recorded before "Winds Take No Shape". Tiger Teeth is much closer to the first album in that the bass lines are way out in front and grooving like a mother! Tiger Teeth also differs in that Simone Rubi sings a couple of the tunes which is always great. I don't know why she does not sing more lead. Just to have "connection" is well worth the asking price.
Don't take the bus today, get this awesome little collection of great pop tunes instead.

Very well presented interpretation of Koukouzelis.......1999-05-05
The greek byzantine choir again does an amazing job of expressing the dynamic splendor of one of the most influential composers of byzantine music. Anyone interested in byzantine music should add this CD to their collection.
One of the most important composers of the 13th century.......1999-02-08
A very good rendition of some of the most important works of Ioannis Papadopoulos Koukouzelis, undoubtly the greatist composer of Greek church music in the 13th century. Most pieces deal with words from St. John's Apocalypose. Powerful, majestic interpretations, full of the splendor of the last years of the Byzantine empire. A strong sense of the feelings of mankind facing God and eternity. One of the best studio recordings of Greek church music (and, actually, one of the very few releases devoted exclusively to Koukouzelis). Highly recomended.

Album Description
Ta Da is Jennie DeVoes' second release. Her style has developed into her own sound and with this album she will secure herself as a true artist. Ta Da was graced with musicians such as, Kenny Arnoff (Mellencamp, Melissa Ethridge, Smashing Pumpkins) Sonny Landreth (guitarist for John Hiatt) and jazz great Randy Brecker (Steely Dan, Brecker Bros.) to name a few. Ta Da is a mix of rock, adult AAA, and fringe with a touch of blues, soul, and feeling. It tells stories of life and evokes emotions for the listener. There's something for everyone and leaves you reflective, uneasy, and satisfied. Jennies' songs can move you - you can feel them and you can make them your own.
Customer Reviews:
Great, genre-busting music.......2004-11-06
If you are annoyed my mass-produced studio "artists," you probably want great music and you don't care whether it fits neatly into any particular category. Jennie DeVoe is what you're looking for.
Jennie DeVoe writes and sings rock for grown-ups. It's probably best classified as Adult Alternative. It's mostly up-tempo, and it rocks.
DeVoe displays a variety of influences, including rock, blues, funk, and gospel. The result is wonderful, so who cares what we call it.
DeVoe also has a great set of pipes and can really belt out a tune, as you'd expect from a gospel-influenced singer.
In a world of studio-produced "talent" and lip-synching dance acts, DeVoe is the real thing. I don't know how you ended up on this page, but since you did, you already suspect that this is music you might like.
Now you know. Buy this album.
Jennie and the band do it again!!!.......2001-11-06
I seriously doubted that Jennie could top her debut effort, but she proved me wrong! "Ta Da" picks up where "Does She Walk on Water" ended. It is a thought provoking and meaningful work, in a world of gimmicks and catch phrases. It is unfortunate that the true storytellers are being pushed to the side in favor of slick packaging and catchy pop tunes. Jennie makes me shake the grind of the day and just be human, if only for one hour. Bravo, girl! And keep carrying the banner for true songwriting and storytelling!
A revolution has begun!.......2000-12-20
There are so few bands which grab you, get under your skin, speak to your heart and mind, and make you want to play their songs over and over. Enter the Jennie DeVoe Band! Ta Da is an amazing disc with songs that possess their own unique personalities. Feeling uneasy about your addictions? Try "Away." Have a yen for an edgy ride to the darker side of your psyche? Check out "Faster Johnny." Musing about the old flame who couldn't make up his or her mind? "How I Feel" is what you need. Some good old fashioned blues? "Love Don't Come Around" is there for you. Whatever your taste, Ta Da has the song for you. This is "grown up" music that actually appeals to all ages, go figure. For the first time in a long, long time, you can enjoy a CD which will speak to you, gentle listener, rather than to some music mogul who wishes to define your tastes for you. Take back the music! Let the revolution continue . . .
She rocks!!.......2000-10-18
Jennie has been blessed with one of the best voices I've ever heard. She stands alone and that makes her incredible. Sick of stuff that all sounds the same? Try Jennie, she's got her own sound. Blues, funk, rock, contemporary, any of the above. She just jams. You can relate to her lyrics, not to mention dance and sing to them. The music was done by first class musicians with an excellent new style that shows they are very talented. You won't be disappointed. She's opened for Lilith Fair, Joe Cocker, Yes, Paula Cole, Big Head Todd and the Monster among others. She's on the up and up. If you can wear a cd out, I'm working on it. I listen to this cd everyday. It never gets old.
awsome cd.......2000-08-03
i loved this cd, jennie has a great voice and the guitar playing is fantastic!!! away is a great tune, i bet we hear it playing on the radio one day very soon!!!
