banshees&dust.......2007-06-13
I remember loving this album way back when, and yeh, you read right: "album." I bought this originally in vinyl; I was a youth with angst and all that stuff; and the soundtrack to the early to mid 80's was colored with various textures including this package.
Sadly, I don't think it stands the test of time, and a lot of the sounds are quite dated. Don't get me wrong. I love Siouxie's voice, and "Cities in Dust" IS a true timeless classic, but I don't think the same can be said about most of the rest of the tracks.
But hey, if you want to discover or re-discover some of the more unique, underplayed-unerhyped sounds of that era, this is a good one to tour.
Whoo.........2007-06-07
I love Christine OrsZula.I'm (Acoustic and electric guitars complement each other..In a stunning array of original landmark recordings..Pop and r&B rockabilly..whatever..)happy thAt SIouxsie and the Banshees have this masterpiece.Dudette..THe Siouxsie and the Banshees have it..
5 stars? Tinderbox gets 777 stars..........2007-05-26
and, numbers, being qualitative in essence, not quantitative, i give the even more astounding JUJU 666 stars....
highly recommended.
92 degrees is almost a Cocteau Twins with testosterone....
Classic Banshee Masterpiece.......2007-04-27
The other reviewers say it well. I'll just add my voice that this is a masterpiece. I remember it being no. 1 on the college charts for a long time, but didn't get to buy it until years later. 18 years after that I still often look forward to pulling it out and taking this surreal voyage. Watch out on 92 degree days. This album holds up to time. Check it out and expand your mind.
A Dark, Surreal Journey.......2007-03-03
Siouxsie and the Banshees are a band that are almost always being painted into a corner. They are always being saddled with the unwarrented and unnecessary "goth" tag (or as the band disdainfully refers to it, "goff"). "Tinderbox", the band's best and most musically consistent work, is definetly an album that would get that tag; It's lyrics touch on only the bleakest subjects, and there is a consistent theme involving bad weather throughout the album. Even so, the album would be better referred to as gothic rock rather than goth. But, anyway, let's get on with the review. The most famous and talked about song on the album is "Cities in Dust", a huge hit in both the U.K. and the U.S. and an abosulutely fantastic song. The song is fast-paced and anxious, with singer Siouxsie Sioux howling in a voice that my friends jokingly compare to Bjork. "Cities in Dust" is a landmark song in gothic rock. There's also "Candyman", the album's second single and one of my favorites. It's a disturbing song about sex offenders and pedophiles (an intresting fact is that Sioux herself was sexually assaulted at age 9). The best song on the whole album, however, is "The Sweetest Chill", a fast, furious, and angry piece of gothic rock. It's about longing for a loved one who has passed away. Sioux sings like she's pissed off and means it, and she makes the song so believeable. There are also some b-sides included on the reissue, the best being "Lullaby", a hypnotic song with sinster overtones. Overall, this is an evocative piece of work that should appeal to any fan of Siouxsie and that Banshees or any fan of dark music in general.

Formed as an outlet to pay homage to their own favorite pop songs, The New Standards are a mini-Super Group out of Minneapolis, featuring John Munson (Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare), founding Suburbs member Chan Poling, and vibraphonist Steve Roehm. On this debut recording, produced by Munson's longtime bandmate, Dan Wilson, the musicians play sendups to Tin Pan Alley, glam, soul, and four decades of rock from Neil Young to the Replacements to Beck. The effect works best on well-worn compositions like "Nature Boy" and "Dark End of the Street." The only dud is a rendition of Blur's "Song 2" which suffers from over enthusiastic vocal "Woo-hoos" that only clobber an otherwise fine arrangement. All-in-all lovely versions of "September Song", Jack Logan's moving "Town Crier" and "The Inchworm" round out this warm and subtle album, leaving the listener hoping for future New Standards explorations through the wide world of pop music. --Ben Heege
Product Description
The record was cut live over two weekends. Including vocals. There are mistakes. There are transcendent moments. There is barebones intensity and scrap. We take our music straight. With Dan Wilson, JohnÂ’s old partner in Semisonic, producing, the recording is big and pop while still preserving a soulful, jazzy intelligence. The emphasis is on developing beautiful arrangements, but there is still room for Steve and Chan to go off, soloing madly.
Customer Reviews:
this really works.......2007-06-05
I saw The New Standards perform at Orchestra Hall, and was throughly impressed. I can't say why this concept works so well, other than these musicians, but it does. REALLY WELL. It's not just a good novelty act...
well beyond that.
That night, among the classic songs they covered was the Stone's Wild Horses. It was done in New Standards "sound", but with the right mood, and heartfelt respect the song deserves.
You have to see them live, to understand what I mean.
The Music You Know, Heard for the First Time Again........2006-01-08
I saw them live, and was just knocked out. The disc is equally impressive and completely contagious. Just listen to it. You'll find yourself grooving on an arrangement, and suggenly discover you are listening to a TRex tune reinterpreted by the boys.
Amazing.
Get it. Tell your friends. Tell the band to record more discs.
Perfect!!!.......2005-12-09
I can't get enough of this disc! Chan Poling, John Munson and Steve Roeh cover a variety of songs on this disc, from "Inch Worm" to "The New Pollution", from David Bowie to Blur. They sing and play their hearts out on each song making it their own, this is the way these songs were meant to be, better than the originals, or maybe the new originals.

Autumn's Breath of Fresh Air.......2001-11-18
Band: Autumn
CD: Return To The Breath (First Pressed Release)
Reviewed by: Mike Ventarola
When it comes to goth bands who make me swoon, Autumn is one that clearly comes to mind. From their remarkable premier recording The Hating Tree to this sophomore release, one just cannot give me too much from this band. One would have to be near dead not to be effected by the soaring vocals of Julie Plante, the passionate guitar playing of Neil McKay or the pulsing bass of Jeff Leyda. Autumn is yet another band that I will run out and purchase without having heard one track from their latest recording simply because I trust their talent and ability to provide quality music.
This CD went to a second pressing because quite frankly some of the folks in the goth scene are way too mentally constipated for words. This initial release opened with an American Indian chant, Dakota Odowan, that seemed to put too many noses out of joint simply because the band delved into something new and veered somewhat away from what folks were used to. Since there was a sizable outcry, the CD was repressed with that first track now removed, with folks losing the essence of inspiration behind the work. However, because of the twitchy people, this pressing is now quite valuable as a collector's item, thank you very much! It worked for Dead Can Dance, so who can blame the band for attempting something different? While discussing collectors items, there is also a rare and limited, elegantly packaged 7" blue vinyl pressing of Even Now and How It Came To Be This Way available from Tess Records (...) that is very reasonably priced for the time being.
It can safely be said that if goth should ever become a national rage the way new wave did in the 80's, Autumn will be heralded for the ability to maintain consistent, sultry, at times sulking, beautiful arrangements. Plante's vocals seem to have come from the school of Chrissie Hynde with that alto range that pierces through the smoke screen of emotional turmoil which refuses to be ignored and is a guaranteed hit maker.
Stylistically, this CD did veer into different territories without losing their trademark sound. A more new wave flavor is evidenced with All My Lovers, mournful violins with Lullaby For Marguerite, a bit of a mid-tempo dance groove with The Knowing, slightly Spanish flavored rhythm with The End of The Line , cold electro landscape with Still Breathing, foreboding tones with Shadowgirl, pensive and introspective with A Simple Truth, and church like and forbidding with The Trip. This dalliance into new arrangements demonstrated the remarkable talent of this trio to take any style and sound, recreate it for a gothic audience and still manage to keep the listener enraptured. One cannot help but become more impressed with the talent of this band than ever before.
Somehow, the swirling guitars mesmerize and hypnotize us while Plante caresses her notes and pulls out layers of vulnerability that we can identify with and feel safe with exposing. She gives us the impression that she is like a big sister telling us about life, love and loss and that we need to be mindful of lest we get burned in the same way. The only negative thing I can think of is the fact that the cover is a bit light, which made reading the song titles on the back cover rather difficult...damn these elder goth eyes! However, all the song titles and their lyrics are clearly evident on the inside of the cover fold out, so they are once again redeemed.
It should come as no surprise to other Autumn fans why I adore this band so much. However, for those new to the scene or unsure of which CD's are worthy of your hard earned dollar, this band delivers the goods every time.(...) Delve into the music of this band and forever be enraptured by Autumn's harvest.
Beautiful music..........2001-06-01
In a day and age when people have deluded themselves into thinking that Marilyn Manson is the pinnacle of goth music culture (when he's anything but), the sound of Autumn is a breath of fresh air. Their first album, "The Hating Tree" showed glimmers of reminscence of a time when goth was an expression of beauty and aggression without being belligerent or mindnumbing, echoing the sound of The Cure's "Pornography" or Joy Division's "Closer," without sounding hacknyed or unoriginal. Now, with "Return to the Breath," Autumn do just what the title suggests, returning to the dynamics of the first album but without sounding rehashed. This album is far more soothing than "The Hating Tree." The first album was hypnotic and aggressive with occasional moments of pure ecstatic beauty. "Return to the Breath" goes in the opposite direction, with more softer songs and a moment or two of sheer gothic angst. My favorite song is "The End of the Line," a short acoustic piece that bring to mind images of nomadic drifters searching for lost love in a barren wasteland of one's heart and soul. Other songs like "Red," "All My Lovers," and "A Letter to Marguerite" are soft, saddening, but beautiful, while "The Trip," "The Knowing," and "Shadowgirl" pierce through the listener's ears with words of both love and lament. From Neil McKay's swirling psychadelic guitar, to Jeff Layda's complimentary bassmanship, to Julie Plante's heavenly operatic voice, this is true gothic music at its finest, a lovely testament to a genre that has been bastardized by money-groping posers like Manson. If you are looking for music that read poetry to the soul and enlightens the senses, music with a modern twist yet a classical edge, romantic but not melodramatic, Autumn is the band for you. "Return to the Breath" will not disappoint.
Beauty never fades..........2000-07-13
Autumn's first album certainly captivated me with its wall of swirling psychedelic guitars and operatic vocals a la Julie Plante's beautiful voice. "Return to the Breath" is aptly named as it is a return to the sound of the first album. The lyrics are very poetic and beautiful to listen to through Julie's sometimes bittersweet voice amidst phasing backdrops that remind me of The Cure's early material from albums like "Faith" and "Seventeen Seconds." There is not much progression into new territory on this album, not stylistically, but that is hardly a deterrent to enjoying the music. Autumn have found a sound that they are good at, and they stick to it with this album. There is a romanticism present in their style that entrances the soul. Songs that really caught me are the more well-known ones like "Red" and "Shadowgirl," but I really enjoyed hearing the songs "Lullaby for Marguerite," "Still Breathing," and "All My Lovers." They are my above-all favorites on this album. Again, the sound is not much different from "The Hating Tree," but when one hears enchanting, lovely music, one can not get enough of it, and the music on both of these albums are nothing short of absolute beauty. If you are a fan of romantic gothic music, this band is for you!

Product Description
ItÂ’s a simple idea: have great contemporary musicians interpret traditional songs such as lullabies, Mother Goose songs, and folk classics that appeal to both children and adults. Instead of relying on saccharine and strings, rely on soul and talent. ThatÂ’s just what an impressive constellation of Twin Cities music stars have done on Down by the Riverside: an album to benefit the music therapy program at Reuben Lindh Family Services, a multicultural provider of pre-schools, daycare, parenting programs, and therapies for some of MinneapolisÂ’ most challenged families.

Best of the B-Sides.......2003-04-03
This is my favorite album by one of my favorite bands. TBS were THE band to see when I was a University of Minnesota student in the early 90s.
Each song is solid and the album is worth every penny.
one of Tina's best.......2002-03-05
When living in Minnesota, I found the hottest ticket was a Tina and the B-side Movement's live show down at the Red Carpet in Saint Cloud. I have never seen a performer woo her audience the way Tina does. Of all her albums, this is a favorite of mine. It is a good demonstration of Tina's ability to weave story, emotion, and good music into her songs. When I first introduce people to Tina, this is the album I always choose. It gives a good sample of her vocal power without too much of her experimentation (which I love but for a beginner....). If you like the Melissa Etherage, K.D. Lang, and other crooners, Tina is a must get. She is unique in her blending of blues, rock and roll, and a bit of soul.

Great Album.......2002-12-08
Well I finally managed to get a copy of Tinderboxand although the wait was frustrating, the album is great. After hearing "Tinderbox," "You Can Move Mountains" and "I Could Be Happy Yesterday" at the Toronto gig, it was amazing how familiar these songs sounded when I heard them on the CD.
Tinderboxranks up there as one of my 'all time favourites' both lyrically and musically. As always, Jake has demonstrated clear insight into the pressures and disillusionment felt by those of us decent human beings who would like to be left alone to get on with our lives, and perhaps lend a helping hand along the way.
A couple of the tracks ("Dead of Night" and "My Ever Changing Moral Stance") took a little while to grow on me -- but grow on me they did, and already I wonder why they didn't grab me straight away. "The Message" was well done -- and certainly well titled, and "A River Flowing" is another easy favourite. Which leaves the other tracks to enjoy on an all round excellent album. But what's with the song that is not noted on the song list or in the lyric sheet?
The surprise and possibly even the gem of the album is "Roaring Boys (Part 2)." The mix of SLF and traditional celtic music is thoroughly enjoyable - please, please on future albums have more of this!
Easily SLF's worst album.......2002-03-11
I have been a Stiff Little Fingers fan for more than 20 years. Unlike many long-term fans I welcome the fact that the group have evolved over the years rather than sticking in the superb punk-rock mould they made for themselves. This album unfortunately is awful. Very few highlights. SLF were always more comfortable writing political lyrics rather than relationship songs and this CD is made up virtually entirely of the latter. Even the songs which show some potential are undermined by Jake Burns' inability to write love songs. For example 'I could be happy'- a powerful guitar rift is wasted on a track which includes such cliched lyrics as 'Just like the Autumn when leaves turn brown and fall upon the ground, that's how you left me'. The second part of the roaring boys is interesting in the punked-up version of Irish music it offers but unfortunately the song falls apart on the weakness of the verses. The lyrics on this album are cliched and the music bland- something you don't expect from SLF. If this was your first introduction to this superb band you would avoid their other records like the plague. If you want to know this group check out their other records.

Sounds Like The Chords?.......2006-08-09
OK I'm totally naive to SLF. I was trying to see what Bruce Foxton of the Jam fame was up to and it looks like him on the cover. Anyway I played the samples and they sound like The Chords, I'm wondering if SLF picked up the singer from that old group also? Who knows, no reviews here so no one must care. Pity, see ya Bruce!
