Competent pop-punk acts are a dime a dozen these days; actually, since the genre's fall from pop chart status a few years ago, you can probably snatch them up even cheaper than that. If you yearn for something new in this vein but with more street cred than a Max's Kansas City reunion, consider Osaka Popstar and the American Legends of Punk. Here we've got Black Flag's Dez Cadena, Ivan Julian from the Voidoids, Marky Ramone his own damn self, and Jerry Only and John Cafiero from the Misfits. If you're paying attention, these are the most interesting and least-heralded members of each of these bands, all of them punk pioneers. What do they do? Record a super fun, loud, Japanese-animation-themed album with super rowdy covers of traditional Southern and Daniel Johnston songs, of course. The whole thing is such a crazy cultural washing machine, no wonder they're pretending to be Osaka superstars on the cover. Here's hoping they all make millions. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Punk rock revolutionaries have united to form the super-group OSAKA POPSTAR!

Fronted by long-time Misfits collaborator JOHN CAFIERO and featuring the legendary MARKY RAMONE (THE RAMONES), JERRY ONLY (THE MISFITS), DEZ CADENA (BLACK FLAG) and IVAN JULIAN (RICHARD HELL & THE VOIDOIDS), OSAKA POPSTAR's superhero line-up rips through their first disc, doing justice to the best of New York City punk rock. Says CAFIERO: "It's great to work with your friends and who better for a band than the guys who started the scene? This is my own personal Punk Rock And Roll Hall of Fame."

The album boast tracks like "I Live Off You," "Astro Boy," "Monsters," "Love Comes In Spurts" and "Shaolin Monkeys," among others. The first single, "Wicked World" was written by renowned indie folk music icon Daniel Johnston, who also contributes vocals on a fervent cow-punk version of the traditional bluegrass lament "Man of Constant Sorrow."

The bonus DVD is highlighted by a music video for "Wicked World" animated by Japanese designer Mari-Chan. Also featured on the DVD is the exclusive music video for "Insects," directed by commercial guru Joel Veitch (known for his Quiznos "Spongemonkeys" TV ads as well as his own UK Channel 4 program "Rather Good Videos").

In addition, CAFIERO has assembled a posse of colossal visual artists to complete an over-the-top, high energy, bursting-with-color package, including original Topps bubble-gum card guru John Pound (Wacky Packs artist and creator of the Garbage Pail Kids), Space Monkeys designer and urban legend Dalek, Batman and Justice League wizard Butch Lukic. and Tragnark who is working closely with CAFIERO in developing the "Shaolin Monkeys" character designs, based on the original Osaka Popstar tune of the same name, for an animated series.

5 out of 5 stars Who else has done something like this?.......2007-05-07

This thing is easily the most fun I've had with a punk album in a long time. The whole thing just has that perfect, old-school punk feel in it, and thats something you can't fake. It seems to have that magic quality that makes all those classic Ramones and Misfits records sound so awesome. And thats because the band is compiled of old punk rock stars.

Who's in the band? We have Marky Ramone just rockin' that drum kit (his drumming on this album is phenominal, quite possibly the best I've ever heard from him. I mean, check out what he's doing on "Astro Boy!!!"). You have Jerry Only from the Misfits and Dez Cadena heading up bass and guitar respectively, they do a great job locking down that giant wall of noise. Ivan Julian from Richard Hell and the Voidoids does some guitar work on the second half too, and he's quite talented.

Also, some guy named John Cafiero sings. He wasn't in a band (I guess he did some production type work for the Misfits), and his voice is really soft compared to most punk frontmen (honestly, he sounds like Matthew Sweet, if you can imagine Matthew Sweet singing punk songs), but he does okay.

Basically what you get here is a really weird mix of southern music songs, anime theme songs, old school punk covers (from Richard Hell and the Voidoids and X-ray Spex), a Christmas song, and some originals about monkeys and breakfast cereal, all in about 28 minutes.

And while that sounds like one of the weirdest combinations ever, all you need to know is that it all just works somehow. Everything is loud, fast and (most imporant for a release like this) fun. The entire band plays with such energy and enthusiasm that it all just works.

Not that theres a lousy track on here, these are incredibly catchy songs. Tons of vocal harmonies too, the whole thing just sounds like a record the Ramones or the Misfits would have put out in a parallel universe where Matthew Sweet sang for them and all they did was watch Saturday morning cartoons.

Super high praise from me, anyone who digs old-school punk rock and doesn't mind a touch of silly lyrics in their music will love this.

I know I can't stop listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars There is life after Ramones!.......2007-01-12

Although many bands have attempted to carry on The Ramones legacy, they have mostly tried to "improve" upon what has come before by making it harder, faster or louder. What so many seem to miss, is that The Ramones sound was as much pop as punk. For every "I Don't Want To Go Down To The Basement" and "I Don't Care" in the Ramones songbook there is a "Rockaway Beach" and a "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker."

Sure, you can exaggerate The Ramones sound to make it hardcore, or you can go in the other direction. Sort of a Dee Dee approach vs. a Joey approach, if you will. Osaka Popstar takes those pop elements of The Ramones and brings them to the forefront. And the result makes me grin a mile wide.

I like all the tracks but it was "Man of Constant Sorrow" that really knocked me out - I had to play it five times in a row after I heard it.

It should be pointed out that all of the members have a punk pedigree. And although his name may not be immediately familiar, John Cafiero was behind the Ramones Raw DVD a little while back. He's the biggest surprise on this CD because his vocals are really outstanding. He's punk without being desperate or mean, an excellent voice to lead the next generation of post-Ramones music.

I'm a huge fan of this band.

5 out of 5 stars need more bands like this out there.......2006-11-10

i found out about this supergroup when i went to the misfits/adicts fiend fest show. when we walked in, these guys were the ones playing and at first, i didnt know what to think. i thought they may have been one of those local pop punk bands that was scheduled just as an opener and they had to have jerry only and dez play with them so that people would watch, but then they started to cover ramones songs and i really started to reconsider them greatly. after the concert, i only became more and more curious about this band and i looked them up on websites and all...then it hit me..these guys are awesome. composed of members of classic punk acts and they sing about anime and all of that little kid cuddly bubblegum stuff. i dont see why people wouldnt like them...i mean...if the descendents, ramones, nofx and screeching weasel get away with a few bubble gum lyrics, then why cant this band? i mean yeah i know jerry only and dez are usually portrayed as the mean demonic in your face punkers, but really, you can't be that way forever. this album does remind me of the Ramones on an extreme sugar high though.

1 out of 5 stars ARE YOU PEOPLE ON DRUGS??.......2006-10-22

Unbelieveably bad album from Osucka Papsmear
I kinda knew this would suck before I bought it but it was the only way I
could get the proof of purchase seal for the Misfits 45 they put out through Misfits records.
You look at Horror High's roster and you get Michale Graves,Zombeast,Calabrese etc,etc all great bands and then compare them to the garbage being put out by Misfits records and I really don't know how long Misfits records can survive because it's roster should resemble some of the talent on Horror High's roster instead we're getting garbage like this from some 40+ yr olds trying to sound like 20yr olds trying to sound like early Blink 182 or something.
I think Jerry Only is surrounded by too many Yes men and I'm kinda dissapointed Marky Ramone lent his name and time to this abortion of a CD.
"Sailor Moon","Astro Boy"...P*#! OFF!! Whatever happened to songs like "ASTRO ZOMBIES" that's what I wanna know.

5 out of 5 stars Strengthening the bond between bubblegum punk and cartoons........2006-08-07

This punk supergroup is sort of like the Misfits meets a Japanese children's show meets a giant bowl of sugary cereal. The band features Marky Ramone, Jerry Only (Misfits), Dez Cadena (Black Flag) and Ivan Julian (Voidoids), and is fronted by John Cafiero, who I don't think has a resume, but he's a decent singer and he came up with the whole idea. And the idea is the chocolate-and-peanut-butter marriage of pop-punk and anime. It gives them a kaiju big battel feel, and they pull it off with a fun shamelessness. I mean, the idea of these legendary punkers singing about Sailor Moon is embarrassing at first, but it's a good time and you'll soon grin along. Just a handful of originals on here - there's covers of the Astroboy and Sailor Moon theme songs, two covers of Richard Hell's biggest songs, and a surprisingly good cover of a Kids of Widney Hall tune. Also, the CD comes with a bonus DVD featuring two animated videos. It's befitting to package the CD with videos since the band has a very cutesy Flash-animated feel to them - they seem to exist more as a Powerpuff version of the Gorillaz than as a real band. Anyway, pick this up or just wait for their inevitable animated series on Cartoon Network.

3 out of 5 stars I Only Got This CD For The Aaron Carter Songs.......2006-11-16

I Got this CD because when I looked it up on a Website, it said that some of Aaron Carter's songs were going to be on there. So I got it just for those. I also got this CD because I hadn't gotten his Saturday Night single yet at the time, and I figured this would keep me happy until I got the Single for Saturday Night. I liked all the Aaron Carter songs that were on there except for "Do You Remember" which is a live in concert version. I liked the studio recorded version of "Do You Remember" better. The song I really like on this album is "Enuff of Me" because it shows a more mature side of Aaron. I happen to like the Rock 'n' Roll guitar in this song as well. The Live In Concert version of "Saturday Night" is awesome. And in the Live version of "I Want Candy" Aaron really knows how to have his fans participating in the singing and all of that. Otherwise this Soundtrack wasn't really the best, unless you like Aaron Carter and just want to get this one for his songs, as I did. I apologize for if I spelled anything wrong, I'm not that great of a speller.

4 out of 5 stars Why we got to be so mean?.......2005-01-12

I'am the 1st to admit that I dislike reality shows such as American Idol,etc..because of the weak quality of talent showcased .I do believe however, that Oprah did an admirable job with the talent shown here...Lashell Griffin's song Free and Jackie Perkin's version of Nobody's supposed to be here are perfect examples of this.I'd listen to this cd anytime before I'd listen to an American Idol compilation.

1 out of 5 stars This is a joke, right?.......2004-08-21

I just noticed this CD on Amazon tonight. Please tell me that Oprah has not jumped on the "American Idol"-esque bandwagon and now has established her own talent competition. Doesn't Oprah have her hands in enough projects these days? I have nothing against Oprah, personally. I recognize that the only reason she is super-famous is because of all of the haus-fraus that watch her show, buy her magazine, support her book club, and flock to Dr. Phil's franchise as well. If I were in Oprah's shoes, I guess I would milk "the ignorant" for all they are worth as well--but come on, Oprah, with your billion-dollar wealth, I think you can afford to pull back just a little. This is a new low even for you.

            3 out of 5 stars American Idol....So What!.......2004-05-19

Oprah's talent contest did not dissapoint. This CD is well put together with the best songs performed by the most talented singers of the group. Lashell Griffin has a beautiful voice with great vocal range and she can give Whitney a run for her money I believe. But my favorite is Lorenzo Owens...the boy can SING!! I see a bright future ahead for Owens and his lead Temptation soulful voice. The other competitors do well especially Lanesha Baca who is well worth mentioning by name. My only complaint is the song by Joe Herzog.....somehow it just sounds like a bad rendition of a Vince Gill song, not my cup of tea and the only song I skip when given a chance.

2 out of 5 stars NOTE TO OPRAH: Stick to book reviews!.......2004-04-30

KARAOKE, KARAOKE, KARAOKE. You'll get more musical satisfaction for your money by going to the local run down bar on Karaoke evening with a carload of friends. The adults on this CD such as Lorenzo Owens shine at times but the overall talent level is far from being notable. OWENS does provide nice vocals to his solo yet does nothing new to make the Stevie Wonder classic shine. JACKIE PERKINS attempts to tackle a DEBORAH COX song and ends up sounding like a discount version of PEBBLES. The sentimental favorite, LASHELL GRIFFIN, does perform a nice mature version of a HOUSTON ballad but the musical arrangement is weak and at best a standard KARAOKE BACK TRACK for the song. JOE HERZOG, LEE McGINNIS and THERESSA RUPPERT are all descent amateurs at best. This CD was a nice concept to generate ratings for the daytime show, but a massive mistake as a recording.

5 out of 5 stars This is an awesome CD.......2004-04-28

I have enjoyed this CD so much. All the voices on this recording are outstanding. My hands go out in praise to all who participated in this challenge. They all deserve another shot at success and I wish they could continue to record together. This CD should be bought by all who enjoy pop music and great vocals. Good luck to all!
