Amazon.com essential recording
Ani DiFranco's fondness for cheeky self-effacement marks her fourth album, Not a Pretty Girl. Having redefined our whole concept of cult following, the funky, punky singer/songwriter has parlayed her prowess for six-string blues guitar into an unique alternative acoustic sound. This album marks real growth for the musician. Songs like the title track or "Worthy" are more fully realized than many of her earlier pieces that lean toward artful scat or spare guitar and vocal arrangements. It also precedes DiFranco's more experimental work, a characteristic recurrent with increasing frequency on subsequent recordings. --Nick Heil

two and a half.......2006-07-29
We are all pretty familiar with the concept of over-acting. You know, like Al Pacino in Scarface. But is it possible to "over-sing." I think it is, and I'd argue Ani does it in every single song she's ever written. "eaaarggAh! OhheeeeOO!, UyayayayayEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" Probably it does the trick if you're PMSing real bad, but as a dude I have a little trouble relating. For a while I thought she had bad lyrics. But then I tried just reading them straight up and realized hey they are totally decent, it's just the vocals that make them tough to stomach. Shakespeare would probably be bad if you said, "the-e-e-ea-a-a- quAAliteee-e-e-e-eEEEEEE of mer cy is not STRAYEEEYYAAAYYEEEAYYEEEAAAAAAnedahugooooh!...." That said, even though they aren't bad perse, they are sort of annoying. I don't like coffee houses, or people who frequent them. Which seems to be sort of the Ani universe. On the other hand, if you like to get an expresso before catching the subway downtown to catch the Innercity Radical Anarchocommunist Existential Collective's screening of their latest short film about transgender intellectual insurgents in the world of independent media publishing in Seattle, where you'll meet a group of girls wearing different colored socks and quirky glasses, and at least one radical photographer named Jeremy, with whom you plan to go backpacking this weekend on a scenic trail where you'll write obsessively about yourself in a journal, all the while missing the amazing plants and animals because you don't know anything about nature except that you hate corporations who want to destroy it, and you're too busy journalling about the flaky dudes you sleep with, plus your parents were hippies and you're exactly like them and not original at all, you'll probably totally dig the vibe here.
On to the positives, Ani is a great guitarist. I dig her style, and wish she was a little more guitar-based and less vocal based, because this is really where she stands out in the singer-songwriter genre. She doesn't just lay down some simple chords, she works the strings, and she has skills. Actually, if she stopped singing, and got someone else to sing while she wrote the music, I think she'd probably be great.
Also, she should get someone else to produce these albums. You have to turn all her albums way up to hear anything but her voice.
If you like her voice though, this would probably be a 5 star album.
A little out there just to be out there, but worth it.......2006-02-23
I don't know, maybe it's me but I get a little "activism-for-the-sake-of-activism" from this album... Or maybe "shock-value-for-the-sake-of-shock-value"... But that doesn't stop it from being good most of the time.
Unique and fantastic things she does with a guitar.
my first ani album.......2005-12-16
the queen of do it yourself rock. she owns her own record company. writes and produces her own songs. plays all the instruments and has enough gusto and energy to power a train. i can't say which tracks i like because every time i play this i listen to straight through. plus, she's a hell of a poet. she said the reason she created righteous babe records was because she didn't want to make music the way the big boys did. records like this capture the true spirit of indie rock. it sounds raw, not perfect or polished.
Freakin' Yeah.........2005-10-14
Oh yeah..Ani is the innovator with her poem on this..spontaneous whip of a girl..Pretty, but intelligent. The prettiest girl is the envied one..Acoustic hard jammin' guitar.."Worthy" kicks, "The Million You Never Made" is awesome, yeah, you know girl.."Sorry I am " is the Ballad with a country twang..F Yeah, the songs are raw and heartfelt..You kick..Love, Sarah McLachlan is #1 also..Yeah..
TRUE*PUNK*ROCK*SOUL*SPIRIT.......2005-04-19
In an America where punk is buying more and more into commercilization and mainstream culture, Ani DiFranco is a true-punk-rock-soul-crusader. A unique girl and her accoustic guitar daring to give corporate America the finger is more punk, in my book, than any group of over-pierced, over-tattooed, boys pretending to play power chords on over-distorted guitars. Cheers Ani!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A Near-Classic.......2007-06-13
While "There's No Business Like Show Business" is not one of Hollywood's top musicals it's still worth watching. The story is simple and entertaining. Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Dan Dailey and Mitzi Gaynor are, as usual, entertaining and fun. Though Johnnie Ray tries very hard he shows that he is a singer rather than an actor. Marilyn Monroe is, at best, adequate. While she has never been one of my favorite performers she usually does a better job than she does in his movie.
Superior in all ways........2007-04-11
They certainly don't make 'em like them used to, and this film is a fine example. Excellent songs, actors, story line, costumes, etc. Superb all the way.
The real star of this film!.......2006-09-05
This is a great movie with Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman.
However the real star of this movie is the vivacious Mitzi Gaynor! She steals every scene she is in. She is beautiful, talented, and hard to take your eyes off of!
I recommend this movie ! I also recommend " Anything Goes"
with Mitzi Gaynor. It has just been restored and the look of it is probably the best color of any DVD I own.
ONE OF THE VERY BEST MUSICALS EVER.......2006-05-29
it surpasses many an MGM extravagansa..... I`ve been thinking.... "What and WHO does this film miss? Judy? NO! I`m mad for Judy and will always be a fighter for her and Liza.... but THIS one may be the very best musical I`ve ever seen... If I ever produced or directed a film - this would be it.....
The musical score is out of this world as are the performances, set designs, choreography, costumes and art direction...
It`s a very CinemScoped film aaaaaaaaaaaaaand for the better of it:-)))))))
Marilyn deserved a better script. Her musical numbers are a joy to watch........2005-12-15
Why did Marilyn accept such a limited role as Vicky after she was a full star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is hard to
explain.
Yet there are things in this movie that has caught my attention.
As soon as Marilyn appears as the Hat check girl named Vicky, she mentiones that she has just finished acting in the CHERRY
ORCHARD, a Chekov play. This movie was filmed 2 years before she
joined the Actor Studio. But at this time, she was receiving
acting lessons from Michael Chekhov, nephew of Anton Chekov the
Russian playwright who wrote the Cherry Orchard. One gets the
feeling that this dialogue in the film was ¨suggested¨by Marilyn
herself. It shows the intellectual side of Marilyn.
Her comic ability does not get many scenes. There's is a comic
scene in which she plays with the pronunciation of the word
AFTER, right before she sings her sing AFTER YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT YOU DON'T WANT IT.
Her best number is HEAT WAVE. Even today it does not look dated.
Her other number LAZY is ok, where she shares the number with
Mitzy Gaynor and Dan Dailey. I felt a more glamorous number
could have been selected here.
¨You'd be surprised¨¨ was a number deleted from the film, but it is found in many Marilyn Monroe CDs .¨In Donald O'Connor's song
A MAN CHASES A GIRL Marilyn provides a background voice. This
song was later recorded by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and
it became a hit.
Marilyn deserved a more comic role in this film. Walter Lang did
not know how to make good use of Marilyn's humorous ability. In
her next film, the SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Billy Wilder got a tremendous performance out of Marilyn.

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12
Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

Album Description
Broadway: Love & Laughter is terrific. Singer/actress Eileen Mager performs twenty-three of the greatest songs from Broadway musicals in a way you won't soon forget. There are some real oldies, as well as more current songs, and everything from tear-jerkers to laugh riots. They have great lyrics (and you'll understand all the words) and great tunes. She'll have you laughing and crying and having a ball. Ellen Brown's accompaniments offer just the right touch -- for example, Little Girl Blue has a great blues sound to it. This is a CD not to be missed, and perfect gift for friends and family.
Broadway musicals have always been about love in its infinite forms. This has resulted in a huge crop of wonderful love songs joyous, sad, flirtatious, angry, passionate, mischievous, touching. They range from the deeply serious to the out and-out hilarious, as, come to think of it, does love itself.
So in this recording, West Side Story's Maria proclaims her joy in I Feel Pretty and South Pacific's Nellie Forbush displays similar feelings in A Wonderful Guy.
We also have Guys & Dolls's Adelaide singing Adelaide's Lament about the cold she's developed because of the frustration of a 14-year engagement to Nathan Detroit that seems destined never to result in a wedding.
Pal Joey's Vera, a sophisticated older woman, who knows Joey isn't worth it, sings about finding herself nonetheless Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.
Of course, Kate of Kiss Me, Kate, in no uncertain terms, announces I Hate Men, while Oklahoma's irrepressible Ado Annie sings I Cain't Say No.
On the Town's lady taxi driver, Hildy, tries to convince us of her total desirability with the madcap seduction of I Can Cook, Too, while Sally of Follies sings of her total immersion in her love in one of Broadway's most touching love songs, Losing My Mind.

Customer Reviews:
Japan has it made!.......2000-07-10
I was a little unsure of whether or not I should spend the extra money to hear "32 Flavors" live, but it was worth it. Everything about this Cd makes me get up and dance! The secret track is my favorite part, her laugh is contagious. When I first heard "Coming Up" on "Imperfectly" I didn't like it very much, but on "Not A Pretty Girl" she adds a little different flare for it. This is a must have for any Ani collector/fan! HIGHLY recommended!
