3 out of 5 stars DVD no more.......2005-12-08

I just got my copy from Amazon.com after having it in my wishlist for the longest while. Guess I should have checked more carefully because between the time I added the New Order: International CD to the wishlist vs when I ordered it, they no longer include the DVD - just the CD. And the DVD was the main reason I wanted this. So I'm feeling ripped off especailly when most of the comments on why people bought this was for the bonus DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Must add to collection.......2005-09-11

If you are a fan of New Order than this is one to purchase. I bought this for the extended version of Bizarre Love Triangle and it is great.

2 out of 5 stars Been there, done that, why bother.......2005-02-15

Seriously folks, This is the best ever??? Substance is the best "best of" album to get from New Order. The music from Technique on has been so-so and this collection is nothing more than a rehash of their 12"s at best.

Here is what you should do... get Substance and The Best Of New Order. This way you get the best of both old school and their newer stuff. Plus you get a couple of extra songs that deserve the recognition. Only buy this album if you have the extra cash to piss away.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this for the remastering effort!!!.......2004-06-15

The earlier tracks here have never sounded this good. Remember 1986, when you ran out and bought Low-life and Brotherhood on CD? And you raved about how this new medium was INVENTED for THIS band? Then you shoved your old vinyl copies in a closet?

Well, here we are in 2004 (actual release 10/2002) and it appears they are finally getting around to remastering some of the tracks, probably due to Rhino's involvement. The sound on "Substance" just doesn't cut it anymore. I can't say this is worth full price, even with the bonus DVD. And the inclusion of three tracks from the recent "Get Ready" is unjustified. But the sound quality is SPECTACULAR. The clarity of Hook's bass lines has never been captured so well. The new transfers demonstrate very clean low- and sub-bass which can't be found elsewhere.

Hunt for this one in the bargain bins until the full catalog gets the remastering it deserves.

4 out of 5 stars Bonus DVD!!!.......2003-10-25

Ok...this cd was ok, but nothing new. The main reason I bought it was for the dvd which is worth it 100%. I love the music videos for"true faith" and "perfect kiss". Blue monday is live from 5/11. I am not sure what year that is supposed to be, but I assume it was pretty recent since they look much older. "Blue monday-live from 5/11" is not my favorite on the 3 song dvd, but it is still really good. I would have prefered the music video for blue monday, but oh well...perhaps they will release some kind of video colection and I will buy it. If you are a new fan, I highly recommend "substance 1987" instead of this. That has most of these songs on it except for the last 4 or so. I would recommend this however for someone who is buying a new order release for the first time because it is all there hits, and you get a pretty good visual with the dvd. Substance is somewhat pricy especially for someone who is not even sure about this band. However stay away from the cd entitled "best of" until you have heard either this or substance. It is really good, but the track list is almost entirely different, and it isn't a great starter album. It is great for a secondary purchase though after you have bought "substance" or this one "international". But overall it is good as far as track selection goes, and as far as the dvd goes, it is a great companion to go with it. I can't complain.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING A MUST FOR ALL NEW ORDER HEADS.......2006-06-17

THIS ALBUM IS WORTH BUYING FOR THE UPDATED "CONFUSION" ALONE, ITS ACTUALLY THE BLADE THEME. KILLER REMIXES. I LOVE IT.

2 out of 5 stars Morally repugnant.......2005-04-16

I bought this album used. After bringing it home and opening up the case, I found that a previous owner had scrawled a helpful warning in permanent marker on the disc face: "DAMN, THIS CD SUCKS". And now, having listened thoroughly, I wish I could track that person down and shake their hand.

Picture New Order songs "updated" by trendy guest artists including Paul Oakenfield and Armand Van Helden. Envision Sumner and Co.'s original tunes stripped of the melody and fragile charm that made them interesting, and augmented with cheesy synthesizer and lifeless 808 beats. That's all there is to say about 8 of the 10 tracks here.

The "Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix" of "Confusion" is the only cut that really succeeds -- mostly through relentless pounding. It's a fantastic stab at techno, and like any great remix, has little in common with the original song. That said, whoever was behind this mix should've saved it for another CD, because it's in terrible company here.
Fluke pull off the only other passable attempt, with a gentle remix of "Spooky". If you're really interested in hearing these 2 tracks, buy the soundtrack to "Blade" and the "Spooky" maxi-single. Avoid this album at all costs.

If my gripes haven't already made it clear, "The Rest of New Order" is not worth the price, no matter what the price is. It's not even worth the space in your CD rack.

2 out of 5 stars no, thank you.......2004-11-07

Looking at the import price tag, and the fact that these songs are better in their original incarnations, all I have to say is "No, thanks, I'll take a pass on this one."

4 out of 5 stars New Order - Remixed........2002-10-15

"The Rest of New Order" is the companion piece to the compilation "The Best of New Order," offering previously-released and rare remixes of the band's hits. Various DJs are roped in to give these songs an updated sound, and they pull it off with varying degrees of success. After the wholly unnecessary 1988 "remix" of the classic "Blue Monday," another version surfaces here, but this time, the beats pulsate much harder this time around. Overall, it stays faithful to the original, with a few updated touches. I'm not too huge a fan of the energetic remix of "World" or "Age of Consent," but Farley and Heller get it right with their low-key house interpretation of "Regret." Armand Van Helden, known for his hard and aggressive beats, breathes new life into "Bizarre Love Triangle." This version blazes into a trace-like stomper, before the tempo abruptly drops and then picks up again. Plus, the hyperactive mixes of "Confusion" and "Touched by the Hand of God" work well, too. At 80 minutes, this CD features the full-length versions of these mixes. While purists may drop their jaw in shock, completists should definitely grab this solid remix CD.

3 out of 5 stars Well, its got a good beat..........2000-11-07

Thats the up side. Lovers of dance music may actually find this disc more attractive than most New Order-lovers would. Once you start, the drums don't stop, except for a few short moments. Speaking as a New Order fan, I'd have to say that the first half of this remix compilation is quite good. My favorite song, "True Faith" has been mixed in a way that all of the sounds and intricies that combined to flow smoothly in the original were all extracted and enhanced, making the song even more powerful than before. The Hardfloor mix of Blue Monday is stunning. Its the first and, as far as I know, the only mix that has actually completely altered the Blue Monday chords, but still retained the steady moodiness of the song, only at a faster beat! "World" has been lengthened quite a bit and mixed with a much more raw, full sound than the original. "Touched By the Hand Of God" was turned into an all out dance-fest as opposed to its original short pop format. And even "Confusion," though much different and unusual, is unique as well and probably the hardest foot-stomper through the entire 80-minute selection.

The problem comes with the second half. With the exception of "Regret", which is a toned-down, more melodic version of the original, the tracks range from average to horrible. "Bizarre Love Triangle" is at its absolute worst here and has no place on this album or any other New Order-related release whatsoever. Its by far the worst track to be found here. And I'll be damned if the life has not been completely sucked out of "Age of Consent". So, this CD has its good points and its bad points, but for dance music lovers and for HARDCORE New Order fans, I'd have to give it a recommendation, albeit not a strong one. If you're just starting out on New Order, get Substance, The Best Of, and a few of their proper albums first.

5 out of 5 stars NewOrderROCKS!.......2001-10-02

Crystal completely surprised me when I first heard it. I've been partial to the dancey side of NO since Blue Monday but Crystal changed that. It ROCKS and they sound GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars Re-New Order.......2001-07-28

This EP is worth the bucks, but only for true New Order fans. The new tune (from the up-coming CD) entitled "Crystal", is good, but it's not going to make you forget any of their classics. Still, some 'new' New Order is better than 'no' New Order. It's a hard-edged and slightly aggressive tune, but lyrically uninspired. The four live tunes are fun, especially "Temptation" which is given the full treatment here. "True Faith" is pretty mush a straight read, and the CD closes out with two Joy Division covers: "Atmosphere" and "Isolation." These two put the CD over the top. I don't regret the high price I paid for this import CD. But then , I love New Order. If you do, then you won't regret it either.

    4 out of 5 stars NOT BAD.......2006-03-25

This would make a good workout tape to get the heart going. I agree with reviewer "BUZZ" that the lyrics are sometimes nonsensical and silly. The music is very interesting.
I get the same feeling listening to this fresh stuff as I did when I heard REM for the first time live in Madison 20 years ago. It has a freshness much like Morrisey's latest.

5 out of 5 stars Best Work In Years.......2005-12-11

I will admit to being a hardcore New Order fan, so anyone reading this should go in knowing that -- there's not a lot I don't like about them, have just about everything they've ever done, CD singles, bootlegs, live, you name.

Having said that, I have to admit I thought their last few albums have been a touch weak -- though I loved "Regret," the rest of the album was, well, uneven. Republic needed something, and the Soccer thing was okay, but not up to them. Crystal? Well, again, okay.

Again, my favorite NO album is Technique, probably a contrarian view to the Blue Monday folks, or the Substance - post JD crowd. But it hangs together as an album quite well. Hence, after a lot of verbiage, I can say I was extremely pleased by "Waiting for the Sirens Call." It's not old New Order, it's just New Order and a whole lot of talent -- Barney's voice is as it is, not the range of Mariah Carey, thank God, but it has so much character I really like, maybe it's presumptuous of an American to say, but it sounds like Manchester working folks.

The songs are catchy, though not quite pop, and maybe it's just me, but I love the lyrics -- "writing songs on your computer," evidently some others don't like that, I think it's self-consciously ironic and sardonic, even a bit self-deprecating.

My only quibble is that the weakest song on the album comes first -- the whole "Joe" effort was more a B-side work and should have been left to a CD-Single, the album would have been better without it.

I do hope this isn't their swan song, they don't really churn out the albums like some other bands, though they all have side-projects, which keep some folks going (Love'em all actually).

One last thought -- Hook's innovative bass sometimes is a little strong in the mix, but it really has held up over time, I'm surprised he hasn't been copied more, and of course the NO synth, though maybe influenced heavily by Kraftwerk, was really a new thing back then and they probably helped create everything from Electronica to Drums and Bass to Techno and Technometal.

Not a bad decades work for a band.

5 out of 5 stars excellent evolution of a great band.......2005-11-07

I disagree with the previous review and I really have grown to like WFTSC. Actually, I think the lyrics are very good on this CD. I listened to NO 20 years ago, and I appreciate how the band has evolved and grown up (along with myself). We're all 20 years older since then and I give NO great credit for not trying to just re-hash an earlier era like so many bands.

Perfect Kiss and Confusion were fantastic songs in their day - and still timelessly hold their own. But the Summer of Love was 20 years ago. Ian Curtis died 25 years ago. And 1963 was...

Get this CD if you're a NO fan. It's a solid work in my opinion with no "filler".

4 out of 5 stars Why do I like these guys anyway?.......2005-05-07

Okay let's be honest: While instrumentally these guys are talented and their music is fun, Bernard Sumner's singing is barely passable and his lyrics are often embarassing ("You have the brightest future/writing songs on your computer...." I mean, give me a BREAK). And yet, I give the CD four stars. Hmmmm......well, did I mention that instrumentally they are talented and their music is fun? Bottom line: if you have enjoyed the last couple of releases from NO, you will enjoy this as well. But there is nothing new here, nothing that will change your life or inspire you to save the world. This is not a genius-level work of art. What it is: solid, fun rock that makes me happy as I crank it up and sing along as I drive home from work at the end of the day. So maybe it will change my life after all: perhaps it is an antidote against road rage. One word of warning: as with previous NO releases, if you are a fan of Joy Division (which I am, big time), do not buy this or any NO release based on their former affiliation with that band. Sumner is a decent musician, but the brutal truth is that neither his lyrics nor his voice hold a candle to Ian Curtis. Nope. New Order is a different and--let's be honest--lesser musical animal than JD was. So I give it four stars, and even that may be a stretch (if Amazon had half stars I would give it 3.5), but hey, being happy while singing on the way home from work is worth something, right?

If there was a certain irony to the surviving members of Joy Division recasting the angst-ridden muse of band founder/suicide victim Ian Curtis as New Order's often catchy melodic synth-pop, there's ample evidence on this compelling four-disc retrospective to suggest that Curtis's troubled spirit and dark sense of humor continued to haunt his influential musical progeny long after his passing. Crucially, the band has foresworn strict historical autobiography here for a more Rashomon-like approach, allowing four outsiders to compile the anthology's component discs. The resulting four chapters focus on distinct, well-defined facets of the band's music: journalists Miranda Sawyer and John McReady serve up the hits-oriented "Pop" and moody, album-cut and B-side centered "Fan" discs, respectively, while Manchester DJ and Factory Records A&R man Mike Pickering presents a baker's dozen of the band's pioneering club mixes (six previously unavailable in the U.S.) on the "Club" disc and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie culls together the ultimate, career-spanning N.O. concert set from a trove of unreleased soundboard recordings on "Live." Band members weigh in throughout the set's artful, straightforward liner notes with often sardonic track-by-track commentary, but it's the outside-in viewpoint that makes this such a worthy companion to Joy Division's similarly scaled Heart and Soul anthology. --Jerry McCulley

It's an OK collection, but just some more remixes of stuff already included on countless other disks. Save your money.

Out of respect for those who truly are, i won't call myself a dedicated new order fan, but they are with out any doubt one of my favourite groups.
So instead of hunting down and collecting several of they're early releases, i decided to buy this box-set. What realy excited me was the fact that there is an entire disc dedicated to club remixes, wich i love. Since I was not fortunate enough to grow up with new order and being a remix-entusiast, i can't help appreciating the remixes ALMOST as much as i appreciate the original tracks.

Disc one contains a great collection of New Order Hits, Crystal, Blue Monday, True faith, Bizarre, The Perfect Kiss, they're all there. I simply loved it, though i am sure they could have squeezed in a couple of more tracks such as 60 miles per Hour, Here to Stay, 1963, World in Motion and Ruined in a day.

Disc two contains other important album works of new order, and i was suprised at how many new favorites i found on this disc.

Disc Three is the club disc, A LOT of grat remixes on this one, though i kind of miss a few from the Rest of New order release, they could have doubled the tracks on this one.
The Fire Island's remix of Regret is in my opinion a slightly better remix than the one on this release by Sabre . And why is not Shep Pettibones Remix of True Faith on this disc!?!
The Magimix remix of Spooky and K-Klass's remix of Ruined in A Day where also deeply missed. But still, still a great pile of remixes on this one.

The fourth and last disc (unless you got the limited edition Box set) contains rather rare Live recordings of Now Order. Since i have sadly naver been to a New Order coincert, this doesnt probably have the same value to me as to one who has. But i still enjoyed it. Music gets an entirely different energy when its performed live.
Great disc, and definitively nice to have in the record collection. Not my favourite disc in Box, but still great.

Even though its tempting to give 5 of 5 stars here, i cant help being a litle disapointed over the rather slim selection of tracks on disck 1 and 3.

      annyway.
New or Not To New Order. If you like'em. Get This Box.
Great music and the box in itself is truly eye candy, looks fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Everything a fan could hope for and more..........2005-05-26

Bought this in hopes I would like it. Saw stuff i hadn't heard before and some that I have heard since I was an OVUM. The box set lives up to all expectations. All 4 CD's deliver what they intended when they compiled this set. I am thouroughly pleased with this purchase....no buyers remorse here!

      5 out of 5 stars cracking.......2005-03-06

let's face it, if you already like New Order you'd buy any album of Hookies baseline and Sumner's oft off-pitch singing and be delighted! New Order filled a void in the lives of many and listening to their tracks induces sweet memories of past times. Any album like this that tries to compile the 'population favorites' is destined to receive the odd bashing-'they didn't include my favorite version of my favorite track, etc'. However, I reckon that every real New Order fan should own this disc set. I guarantee there will be sections of it that make you weep with joy. Now that I have it, I'd have bought it for one track - the live performance of Temptation. For a number of reasons (some technical) New Order were never a very consistent live band but when things go right, those times were priceless. to have some of them on disc is a joy to behold. The other discs are great but the live one (with tracks selected by the Scotsman who knows -Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) is sublime. if you know you like New Order, get your cash out!

      5 out of 5 stars great.......2005-03-03

ok, so the only people that would be into this are die-hard New Order fans. And of course they will already have most of this material.

But I'm glad I got it because
      - the high-quality mastering sounds great. Most of their older albums desperately need re-mastering.
      - the disc of live material is good if you really love the band, and there's some hard-to-find remixes as well
      - the lengthy book has many unseen photos and writing/interview from the band, plus the packaging is superb and classy
