New Morning [Import]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Fifth studio from the coolest of British bands finds A New Morning less of a stylistic new dawn than the album title implies. It's very much in the insistent pop mould of the immediately preceding Suede albums, Head Music and Coming Up. In fact, Brett Anderson has been known to describe it as Suede's most 'up' recording to date. Potential hit singles abound, particularly when loving the lady aliens of the future on the album's most Bowie-esque moment 'Astrogirl' or on the new Suede classic 'One Hit to the Body'. A New Morning is a shameless pop record. Thankfully, it's an excellent shameless pop record. Includes 3 bonus tracks 'You Belong To Me', 'Simon' & 'Superstar'. Sony. 2002.

Customer Reviews:
Great cd for great price.......2007-03-16
I love this cd. I just moved to the city from the suburbs and I miss hearing the birds in the backround all day, especially to wake up in the morning. The only "natural" sounds here are traffic, people walking by screaming and cursing profanities, and boys bouncing basketballs.(Oh and the occasional gun-shot.)
So, this is a PLEASURE to my ears. When we are finally living as God intended, on this earth in a paradise, then we will live without pollution and in peace with everyone, including the animals.
Until then, we have cd's with nature sounds on them.
As another reviewer stated, the first track does open kind of unnaturally with the sound of the surf, but it gets better. And in another track the water reminded me of gurgling bath water, but other than these minor flaws, it's great, and i'm very satisfied.
Relaxing.......2007-01-18
I loved listening to this cd before bed. It was relaxing. The sound is realistic and there is no music distracting me from the natural sounds.
Echoes of Nature: Morning Songbirds.......2006-11-03
Tinnitus sufferers---this is your CD. All Echoes of Nature CDs let you listen to the "sounds of nature" without disturbing high and lows of music. I have screeching tinnitus in both ears and take solace in these tapes. Try them!
birds in paradise.......2005-09-18
I was staying in a highly rated hotel in Nice,France recently. The lobby was filled with the sounds of birds. For quite a while I searched everywhere but could not find any. Then it dawned on me that the songs were coming from the speakers overhead. I could not wait to find this CD. I'm going to put it on while I get a massage!
Echoes of Nature: Morning Songbirds.......2005-09-06
This has become my "sleep" CD. It's wonderfully relaxing. There are many different kinds of birds and their songs along with nature sounds. I simply love it and plan on purchasing many more in this series. Money well spent.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
spiritual americana.......2007-01-06
I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!
Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11
Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.
Superb .......2006-08-07
This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.
Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07
My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.
These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.
Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08
I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing........2007-04-02
We read all the previous reviews and thought this disc would be a keeper. We (my husband, three kids 14, 10, and 5) tried it on a warm, spring evening in the car. One or two songs, like the Banana Splits, Speed Racer, and Scooby-Doo were fun. Most however, were harsh, and too fast for the parents and youngest guy.
I would rather try these songs in their original state and skip the covers.
All the songs you remember.. with a twist.......2006-07-10
Great CD with songs you remember as a kid. I really got it because of the "Tra La La" Song from the Banana Splits, but all the others are great re-makes; Hong Kong Phooey, Scooby Doo, Stop the Pigeon, Fat Albert's Theme, Spiderman.. and others.
JUNK.......2006-06-05
If you're looking for soundtrack recordings, DO NOT GET THIS!! It's nothing but sick, annoying, noisy, GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great for the young and the old!.......2006-05-25
I've had this CD since it's release! LOVED it then, still love it! I think the covers are GREAT! Better than the originals, makes for much more fun reliving the cartoons I grew up on! I had recently purchased a copy for my friends son, who LOVES it, and since has been learning to play guitar! I would like to see more CD's like this quality and caliber of bands to attract the young ones who are our future rockstars!
Fantastic Compilation of Memories Past.......2005-12-29

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

By 1970, after his infamous motorcycle accident and a mess of an album called Self-Portrait, Dylan had lost his remarkable consistency, but not his talent. New Morning, a collection of songs that lacks the urgency of the singer's '60s material or the country cohesiveness of Nashville Skyline, is nonetheless rewarding in a laid-back way. Dylan, still affecting his low Johnny Cash imitation, sings strongly on the piano-heavy "Winterlude." "If Not For You and "Time Passes Slowly," which never became signature songs by any means, are two of his most underrated performances. Cocktail jazz piano and Martha Stewart's background scat-singing on "If Dogs Run Free" add to the album's experimental spirit. --Steve Knopper
Album Description
Out of print in the U.S.! 1970 return to form for Mr. Zimmerman after the disasterous Self Portrait. Features Bob backed by a stellar band including David Bromberg, Al Kooper and others. 12 tracks. Sony.
Customer Reviews:
I'm a bit perplexed.......2007-05-11
I see this has been re-released as, presumably, a British import. Unfortunately, all the reviews listed here are older and do not pertain to this particular release, so we don't know if it's been remastered and upgraded. The 1989 release that's been available all these years is pretty pathetic. It's got no teeth and sounds boxy. I've still got my old LP and had to resort to transferring that to CD to get a decent sounding version.
About the music itself: I reserve a 5 star rating for true masterpieces, and let me tell you, this is close. It's sorely overlooked in Dylan's catalog, probably because it had the misfortune to follow Self Portrait, which everyone proclaims to be a total abomination. I don't view SP that harshly, in fact, I think it's an interesting album. It certainly isn't what one expects from Dylan, and certainly not what was expected in 1970, but it's really not that much different from Nashville Skyline, except that it has a lot of cover versions (some of them really "interesting") and it doesn't follow the psuedo-country theme of NS.
New Morning was seen then as an attempt by Dylan to redeem himself after the debacle of SP, and that's probably pretty accurate. There's no doubt in my mind that it's his strongest work between John Wesley Harding and Blood On The Tracks. Dylan sounds assured, plays some really good piano, and covers a lot of ground, both musically and lyrically. Plus, he's got a great band; Al Kooper adds a lot of musicality to the proceedings, and he plays on every cut. The songs are short and to the point, and the lyrics may not match the creative poetry of his prime earlier period or the narrative depth of Blood On The Tracks, but they are penetrating and challenging. The high points are many. If Dogs Run Free has always been a favorite, with its jazz/beat poet feel, New Morning cooks with an optimistic spendor, and If Not For You is just a classic on the order of Lay Lady Lay. These are my personal favorites, but the whole album plays really well and ends really strong.
Maybe I should have given it 5 stars. If anyone reading this has purchased the import, please give us a review and let us know if there is a significant sonic upgrade!
And does anyone know why the rest of the catalog hasn't been remastered in the States? I'm assuming that when SACD didn't really catch hold, it messed up the project. SACD or no, the rest of Dylan's catalog deserves the upgrade. Those versions are pushing 20 old, and we all know how far digital remastering has come in all those years. I'm still waiting for the Beatles remasters, and those are now MORE than 20 years old.
Under the radar.......2007-01-01
This is a very different Dylan disc that for some, like myself, thought to be one his most innovative and better departures. The incorporation of piano and organ played by sixties sideman-stalwart Al Cooper and good old country boy Charlie Daniels on electric bass, the background gospel singers and cool jazz scat singing of Maeretha Stewart create a sound that was not your typical Dylan expectation than nor now. I recently bought a copy of this disc on sale to replace my LP, it takes you back to the day when it came out originally but more than that it demonstrates the diversity and depth of Dylan's work. There are a few country introspective songs that are so quaint that they almost come across as corny like "Sign on the Window" but the brilliance strips away any superficial outer layers to reveal simplicity that works. On the other hand "Winterlude" is just a little to quaint for my tastes. The song that has the most originality and hence my favorite is first and foremost the quirky "If Dogs Run Free" that begins with some piano runs and bluesy jazz guitar with Dylan's voice lowered an octave or two, not as sinewy but deeper and stronger coupled with the scat of Maeretha Stwart to create a song for the ages. A close second is "Father of Night" that features really cool background voices but unfortunatly is much too short coming in at only 1:29. "Three Angels" is sublime and at a whole different level; this is the type of song that is the essence of Dylan music. Other good songs include "Went To See The Gypsy and " If Not for You" that finds Dylan in more typical voice and accompanyment. This is one of those dics that can be played over and over again and you never seem to get tired of it but rather just continue singing along with Mr.Zimmerman. Add this to your Dylan collection it is pretty darn good.
a christian dylan.......2006-08-28
well,as the story goes, bob dylan was all fubar'd and got into a motorcycle accident.when he was being hurled through the air,the last thing he saw was a neon sign that read "jesus saves".he decided to throw together this album dedicated, mostly,to the christian god.theres 2 songs i play a lot on this one......."if not for you"-a cool love song where he rhymes words multiple times at an alarming rate.its so cool.the other is "winterlude",a sort of old timey, reminiscant, secret love song.the rest of the album is not bad those are just the 2 i always end up playing.it was the first bob dylan album that got less than 4 stars from me.
Good Dylan..........2006-08-07
This album came out on the heels of the tripe Self Portrait, so many critics lauded this one, because anything was better than Self Portrait. As time marched on, we revisit New Morning. It's a good album, not a great one. The title track and Day of the Locust are very good songs. The one masterpiece is Three Angels. It's a wonderful song, one of Dylan's best. So this is a nice album. Dylan went into exile for the next 3 years after this, releasing just a few singles...
SELF PORTRAIT Should Have Been This Good.......2006-07-15
I just purchased NEW MORNING and I quite like it. Although I have always been aware of him, of course, as a man in his fifies I am just now discovering the Bard of Minnesota's works in depth. Perhaps, had I been a huge fan in 1970, I would have as readily dismissed NEW MORNING as much I recently dismissed SELF PORTRAIT. Somehow, though, this album shines for me. To many people younger than I, if a artist jumps from one musical style to another on the same release, they deem such behavior "inconsistent." Back in the day (and I believe other greybeards will agree with me here) however, that was known as "eclectic" and simply illustrated that you (and your fellow musicians) knew the sources from whence American music sprang.
Here I feel Mr. Dylan shows his roots. If one reads his autobiography, I feel that music such as to be found on NEW MORNING will be more clearly understood.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a great series of recordings. Leonard Slatkin has generally chosen the right balance of music for the composers used in the series (with terrific cover art from Thomas Hart Benton). This disc is devoted to Copland's film music. The treat here is a version of The Heiress Suite reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Copland's talent for writing for films rested in his ability to identify and maintain themes, at the same time not slacking on the transitional details. This belongs in any Copland collection. --Paul Cook

I was disappointed and don't listen to it much. I like certain songs, but not the rest.
outstanding!.......2006-01-21

Aaron Copland: the Norman Rockwell of film scoring.......2004-06-14
When I purchased this collection I was already very familiar with Mr. Copland's more popular fanfaric motifs. I was astounded at how much I enjoyed the wonderful division of both sweeping dramatic themes and friendly, home-grown melodies. His film scores for the 1939 'Of Mice and Men' and the 1940 'Our Town' are a testament to classic films set in simpler times. The 'Red Pony' tracks for which the compilation is named are a magical digression from the listener's pre-conceived notions of Copland western fare. When one expects "Rodeo" (arguably one of Copland's most famous themes) one instead receives a gentler and sometimes powerfully moving score. The crowning jewel of this collection, however; is the beautiful suite from his Academy Award winning score for William Wyler's 1949 film of 'The Heiress.' When listening to this magnificent piece of musical history I am reminded how so many great scores are unavailable to listeners of today, and only through recreation and re-recordings can we re-capture those glimpses of film score artistry. I can only hope that many lost or hard to find works continue to be found or recorded so that film score and music lovers in general can continue to discover and rediscover the joy and beauty of our masters in film composing.
Great recording of definitive American film music.......2004-04-08
In a way, filmgoers have been listening to Copland's film scores nearly every time they go to the cinema, since film composers have been shamelessly ripping off Copland for the last half-century or so. When you listen to the "Our Town" suite, do you get the nagging feeling that you have heard this music somewhere before? No doubt you have, in dozens of derivitave film scores from the 1980's and 1990's, sometimes (shamelessly) right down to the exact chord progressions.
How nice it is then to be able to go back to the source, and have rendered in so superb a fashion as it is by Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin, as usual, upholds his reputation as one of the leading interpreters of American music.
This CD contains the premier recording of "The Heiress Suite," which is a delight to listen to, and of course the fairly well-known "Red Pony" music. Is their a more quintessential piece of "Western" music than the "Walk to the Bunkhouse?" How does a jewish boy from Brooklyn nail it on the head so perfectly, anyway?
Other selections include "Music for Movies," a collection of bits & pieces from an assortment of Copland-scored movies that Copland arranged in 1943, and "Music for Radio," an earlier composition that isn't really "movie music," but fits well with the rest of the compositions on this CD.
Instead of wasting your time on movie soundtracks that are nothing more than just derivitave hack jobs, listen to music by a composer who had truly mastered his craft.
Leonard Slatkin conducts Copland.......2000-11-14
This album is worth it just to get the world premiere recording of "The Heiress Suite" reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Also of note are Walk to the Bunkhouse from "The Red Pony" and New England Countryside. Leonard Slatkin conducts these pieces with great emotional feel that states that this is the same America that Copland wanted to us to embrace.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Bryn Terfel's beautiful voice........2007-05-13
Bryn Terfel has a beautiful voice. Listening to him is very pleasant and definitely something to look forward to. I read a review saying he would replace tenor Pavroti. However, I believe that Mr. Terfel is a Baritone and not a Tenor. That does not detract from the fact that he should be considered one of the world's top male singers. His voice is truly impressive. This CD by Bryn Terfel is one from our collection that is outstanding and a favorite.
Why do people think this guy can sing??.......2007-04-27
Sorry, I think this guy is one of the most overrated singers out there today. He always sounds like he is singing holding his nose shut. VERY nasal sounding.
If you want to listen to an incredibly beautiful voice, buy one of Josh Groban's CD's--you won't regret it! He has the voice of the century!
Relaxing.......2007-02-03
Excellent selection of music. It covers many different types. My wife likes being able to hear the words with out instruments drowning out the vocals. I find it relaxing and many of the songs are familiar and very well done.
Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts.......2006-02-25
Simply superb. I don't know what our local (Wash DC) paper was talking about when they said Deep River was the weakest link. I was enthralled from beginning to end. I have had the pleasure of hearing Bryn Terfel live in recital at the Kennedy Center. I can assure you that his voice has only improved with age. He was wonderful then and is spectacular now!
A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15
Bryn Terfel harkens back to earlier American operatic stars such as Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill who crossed grenres to satisfy their unquenchable need to sing any and all songs that moved them to an appreciative public. These great singers all had their origins singing sacred music from their respective religions and learned to lay their considerable talents before the altar of the simple inspirational song.
This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.
Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.
I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.
This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.
