The $5.98 EP.......2007-03-12
This is a great collection of cover tunes from the cover Kings. Metallica has a knack for picking just the right songs to cover and doing them well. This was released between the death of Cliff Burton and the recording of ...And Justice For All. I have Jason Newstead's autograph on the original cassette cover. They called it "The $5.98 EP", so stores couldn't hike the price up on the consumer. I would like to say, "Get this cd!!", but the fact is, you would be better off buying "Garage Inc.", which includes all these tracks and about 20 more on a 2 cd set.
short and sweet- lars review.......2006-06-02
I bought this album in 86? I was around ten years old. This album was my first introduction to Metallica. As soon as "Helpless" kicks in- with lars' aggressive tom tom fills- i was hooked! and that's only 8 bars! Incidentially, it is because of listening to THIS album that I started to play the drums. I would like to add that Lars drumming here is probably his finest compared to the other metallica albums that came after- with the exception of "and justice for all.." so if u wanna rock with intensity! tuck your earpieces in your ear holes and crank it Up!
Awesome! Add this to your record collection!.......2005-11-21
I got this on record a few years ago before this came out on the Garage Inc CD with all the B Sides. Nonetheless, I love this album, the album cover -- they all look really happy and on the back you see the picture negatives of them in and out of truck with Lars's father. Hearing these songs alone is a treat on record... You really feel the energy and the good vibes the band members had back then.
All the way through, it it classic Metallica doing some great covers, which you can totally understand the similarities of the songs they copy and how they were influenced.
Often when bands take it easy, do covers and fool around it can sound better! Last Caress (Originally by Danig) is better than the one on here, but this is all done just for kicks.
Oddly enough, it's one of my favorite "albums," and too add, I think it's better than the original Garage Days, because It has more songs. I think the songs chosen here are phenomenal and show a remarkable recovery since Cliff died the year before in a bus accident in Sweden. I
There's even a "nutty bow" to Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills" on here as well. It is as if Iron Maiden, returned the greeting by putting on their "Be Quick or be Dead" single "...Metallica in the rear view mirror" in the song they covered "Space Station No. 5."
If you like collecting records, this is the one to have! Metallica, the raw Metallica!
PS: I am pleased to learn that you can records of Amazon too -- Sweet! They should make it more well-known!
Good Old Days, Gone but not Forgotten.......2005-09-26
I didn't even know of this CD until i started looking around Amazon.com. A must have for any seious Metallica collector. Sounds like early Metallica. (which we all adore).Buy it and you will not be disapointed.
Metallica: The $5.98 EP-Garage Days Revisited (1987).......2005-07-05
Shortly after Cliff had died, Metallica held auditions for a new bass player. This entered JASON NEWSTED. Jason became the band's new bass player. The new and improved Metallica lineup now featured:
JAMES HETFIELD (Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitars)
KIRK HAMMETT (Lead Guitars)
JASON NEWSTED (Bass Guitars)
LARS ULRICH (Drums)
In 1987, Metallica released their fourth album entitled, THE $5.98 EP-GARAGE DAYS REVISITED. This album is a five-track EP featuring cover songs that were originally recorded by bands that were popular back in the 70s & 80s. This EP is not bad. I would have given it four stars, but I gave it three since it was cover songs.
HELPLESS
Not bad.
THE SMALL HOURS
I never heard the original, but they do this song great.
THE WAIT
Incredible.
CRASH COURSE IN BRAIN SURGERY
Not bad.
MEDLEY: LAST CARESS/GREEN HELL
Not bad.
I do not have this album, since nobody seems to have it in stock. I'm trying to see if I can buy a used copy from Amazon.com. I did hear this album before, since my older brother had a copy of this album on cassette when it first came out. I'll only be buying it just to get all of Metallica's albums. I already have most of their albums and I'm only missing this one and SOME KIND OF MONSTER. So, if you would like to buy all of Metallica's albums, then buy this one to help complete your Metallica catalog.

A laid back Vines album.......2007-06-27
If you're looking for the gritty Vines you hear on the radio, this is probably not the best album to start with, but that is not to say this album is any less excellent than their others. Start with Highly Evolved and save this one for last.
this rocks! now put it away.......2006-11-12
i remember the first album fondly. but i'm not reviewing the first album
the second album, winning days, is better than the first. it is everything i expected and more. i remember when this one was released and i almost felt compelled to buy it but then i remembered how little i listen to the first album anymore and every time i was tempted to pay money for the album i decided i'd wait until i found it in a buck bin.
now i work at a radio station and i got the album for free! so i listened and i don't really regret waiting so long. after all, they have a new one out already. right? and this is the first time i heard any of the songs.
the vines are underrated. there are some great psychedelic rock influences in the textural jams. but they are lacking melodicly. for me, there just isn't enough melodic development to really hold my interest.
or maybe i just don't hear it. after all, every posative review raves about it's melodic content. but me? i don't hear it. sure they have vocal harmonies but that doesn't mean it's melodic.
so now that i'm done listening to the album i probably wont listen to it again. for a long long long time.
Better, Different, Sad, Crazy, Amazing Album.......2006-03-05
The Vines second album Winning Days put to show who the real fans were. All the "I listened to it because everyone else did and it made me part of the 'in' crowd" people drifted away because it wasn't an exact duplicate of Highly Evolved, the band's first album. It wasn't all screaming guitars and vocals. It wasn't the same.
Don't buy Winning Days if you're looking for two copies of Highly Evolved.
However, if you're looking for musical expansion, chilling vocal blends, and amazingly expressed sadness, then Winning Days is for you.
Even on the heavier tracks (Ride, Animal Machine), Craig Nicholls fails short on the expection of screaming his way through the whole track. In fact, he does a pretty good job singing through most of the album.
The harmonies (Autumn Shade II, Winning Days, Rainfall, Amnesia, Sun Child) really stand out.
The guitars aren't just screaming all over the place, they are part of a song, part of a blend of harmonies, bass, drums, guitars, and the trademark scream of Craig Nicholls.
This album is suggested listening for anyone who enjoys good music.
This album is a Masterpiece .......2006-02-12
This album is one of my favorite albums of all time. It is a masterpiece, every track is amazing! The Vines are one of the best bands out there today and most people don't know that. Their messages in the songs are great. When I first got this album back in March of 2004, I have to say I did not think it was better then the first album the vines made in 2002, but with listening to the tracks closely and understanding the messages that the vines where trying to get across to it's listeners I grown to love this Cd and it is not only an album that I love but it is in my top 5 best albums of all time. This album is a must have and with Tracks like TV Pro (one of the most daring rock tracks EVER made),Autumn Shade II, and Ride you will hear what I am talking about, so if you like music and you love great rock music buy this album and do not forget that the vines have a new album coming out in the spring of 2006 (4-4-06 in US). Get this CD you can not go wrong.
Are you kidding me? 3-2 stars??.......2006-01-19
Wow people. Are you out of your minds? This album is friggin awesome. "just not the vines" "difficult second album" "let down." Ouch. I love the Vines, and I say that the Vines have done what they did on Highly Evolved and made it better. I still like their mellow stuff (Mary Jane, Homesick, Autumn Shade II, Winning Days,) and they really can rock out (Outtathaway! Ride, She's got something to say to me.) I don't know why you people say this album isn't as good, or sucks. You're wrong! If you liked the first album, you'll definately like this.
Absolutly get this album.

Album Description
Ms Dynamite exploded onto the music scene in 2002 winning a host of MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards. In 2003 she went on tour, partly organized by a Nottingham-based youth collective, campaigning against gun violence in Britain. Since then we haven't heard much from the hip-hop star and that's mainly because she's been bringing up her baby son. The good news is she's back with the album Judgement Days. Polydor. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
Postpartum Session .......2006-10-19
After a great album like "A Little Bit Deeper", there really is no where to go but down. Not that her debut was successful in the US, but any critical acclaim she received could not compensate for her album promotion being derailed by pregnancy.
JUDGEMENT DAYS consists of 13 songs on the Canadian version and 15 songs on the UK version (My review is based on the Canadian import version). There are no interludes, skits, or hidden bonus tracks. The booklet includes song lyrics, several black & white photos (one with who I presume is her son), and track information.
Most of the songs are produced by Chink Santana. Reza Safinia and Bloodshy & Avant produce a couple each. Guest rappers are Lil' Wayne, Sincere, and... Chink Santana.
Ms. Dynamite is at her best when she is angry and/or indignant. That comes thru in her social commentaries "Judgement Day", the acoustic "Mr. Prime Minister", and the deeply personal (and extremely hostile) "Father".
With the exception of the up-tempo "Put Your Gun Away" (the only hot beat on the album), the rest of the album is nothing exceptional. It is good, but nothing to get excited about: mid-tempo grooves, better-than-average lyrics, as-to-be-expected subject matters, and only 13 songs, several less than her debut (total running time under 55 minutes). She does thankfully remain unafraid to speak frankly and does not hesitate to use strong language or so-called profanity. But unlike her previous album, she does not MC; she does not rap, she only sings and sing-songs.
Unlike "A Little Deeper", this album has yet to be (and presumably will not be) released in the US (which may or may not have to do with the British spelling of "Judgement/Judgment"). So whether getting it as in import from Canada or the UK, it will cost more than the average US release. The added cost may be worth it to Ms. Dynamite fans who have been waiting for more since her 2003 debut, but if not a Ms. Dynamite fan, don't bother. To sate any UK Hip Hop cravings (especially for something to dance to), I suggest M.I.A.'s "Arular".
Canadian version:
1. Judgement Day
2. Father
3. Put Your Gun Away
4. Back Then
5. Fall In Love Again
6. Not Today
7. You Don't Have To Cry Feat. Lil Wayne
8. Unbreakable
9. Pain
10. Shavaar
11. Gotta Let It Go
12. She Don't Live Here Anymore Feat. Chink Santana
13. Mr. Prime Minister
UK version:
1. Judgement Day
2. Father
3. Put Your Gun Away
4. Back Then
5. Fall In Love Again
6. Not Today
7. You Don't Have To Cry
8. Unbreakable
9. Pain
10. Shavaar
11. Self Destruct
12. Gotta Let It Go
13. She Don't Live Here Anymore
14. Mr. Prime Minister
15. Redemption Song
Solid, but a disappointment..........2006-05-07
If Ms Dynamite was in battle-mode when she unleashed A Little Deeper in 2002, this time round she's ready for all out war. On Judgement Days, Ms D sounds off about absentee fathers, gun crime and the many wrongs and injustices of this world. And she does so with such ferocity that, by the end of the album, you can almost hear her victims begging for mercy.
Songs like "Judgement Day", "Put Your Gun Away" and a cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song", all serve to highlight her anger. The accompanying music is pretty standard urban fare, with a touch of reggae thrown in for good measure.
Unfortunately the intensity of her strop overshadows the albums lighter touches.Tales of teenage crushes ("Back Then") and a dedication to her son ("Shavaar") try to give the album a feel good glow, but end up getting lost in the album's overall 'down' feel.
But at least Dynamite hasn't lost her values, and it's this that makes Judgement Days a worthwhile, if not entirely satisfying, album.
Judgement Days - Ms Dynamite Bares Her Soul.......2005-11-02
Having collected a mantelpiece of awards including 3 MOBOs, the Mercury Music Prize and "Media Personality of the Year " by the Commission for Racial Equality for her debut outing; A Little Deeper, Ms Dynamite returns from a couple of years establishing herself as both doting mother and political activist, to get back to business with a brand new long-player.
For most recording artists, their sophomore effort is seen as their chance to build on the success of their first album, and begin to establish within their audience a sense of musical reliability. For Ms Dynamite however, her first unforeseen jump from independently produced UK Garage singles to a mainstream UK R `n' B album has made it difficult even for her fans to predict with any conviction what they would hear after peeling back the cellophane wrappings on her new CD.
If `Soul' can be accurately defined as a music based on vivid, gritty experience, expressed with an intensity originating deep within the spirit, after listening to tracks like Father, Back Then and She Don`t Live Here Anymore, it would be just as accurate to define Ms Dynamite's new album as a new manifestation of `Soul Music'.
In terms of production, Judgement Days is not a million miles from A Little Deeper. The Karlsson/Pontus/Jonback combination (Put Him Out, Krazy Krush) have been invited back to generate two more bangers, while Chink Santana of Murder Inc fame takes over from Salaam Remi to deliver the hard-hitting and emotive undertones that Ms Dynamite's musical departures have so far thrived on.
From the gently scratched intro, to the simple guitar accompaniment to the album's final song Mr Prime Minister, it is obvious to the initiated that this is a follow-up album, however whilst her now familiar sing along vibe returns intact, her vocal confidence and song writing skill has definitely moved to a new place.
Without getting extremely personal it would be difficult to know how much Niomi Maclean Daley (Ms Dynamite's government name) provided the inspiration for Judgement Days lyrical content, but to hear her choking on some of the coarser sections of her vivid lyrical depiction of a father's absenteeism and the impact on his then-unstable family from his oldest daughter's perspective for example, it is clear that the studio process captured, rather than stifled, the raw emotion that some can only access during their live performances.
Now is the time for promos and touring, but if in another unexpected move Ms Dynamite decided to put her winter coat into storage and focus on being a part-time militant and full time mummy until those 30 degree days return, she could still maintain a lucrative sideline as a producer/songwriter. Buy the album. Play tracks 6 & 9, then just imagine it... Mariah Carey releasing Not Today, and Lil' Mo releasing Pain, both featuring Ms Dynamite on an MC tip... Both remixed by Reza Safina... You hear it now... Remember you heard it here first.
