Between Black and White
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
"Between Black and White" came about thematically from reflecting on the fact that human nature generally tries to make things as simple, and dynamically opposed, as possible. Good and evil, black and white. The irony of course being that most of the challenges we face, the decisions we make, and the lives we live, by definition, subjectively fall somewhere between black and white. Life is rarely about consistent extremes; it is about passions, priorities, dialogue, and subtlety. Magical realism as consequence.
Touching the depth of our souls Music is meant to inspire, to create moments that can be as much reflective as provoking. It is also meant to be fun. Finding a way of bringing each of these elements together ties not only our passions but extends our reach, humanity, and balance. Themes rarely sated.
Music should be as much about evolving as, at times, regressing. It gives context as readily as inspiration. It requires the ability to communicate, to listen -- one without the other is either screaming or deafening silence.
Developing dialogue While lo-fi-styled, thematically my music is rooted in a blend of rock and alt-folk guitar that hopefully captures a purity of message and authenticity in grounding lyrics. Think unplugged. I wrote, recorded, performed and produced all of the music on "Between Black and White."
A philosophy of the soul I hope my music manages to influence. To coax thought and entice feeling. I hope it resonates. I hope it manages to feel familiar. Absently smiling and unexpectedly beautiful.

If All Hiroshima Albums Were This Good..........2005-07-26
Hiroshima is, without doubt, an unprecedented band for the fusion of Jazz and Asian rhythms and instrumentals. This is the album which shows this best. I have tried several others but, alas, Hiroshima seems persistently interested in mediocre vocals and even less noteworthy lyrics. Please, please, please stick to the instrumentals which are so wonderful in "Between Black and White". Everything else is second best.
This is what they do best!.......2002-01-11
After experimenting with "Urban World Music," Hiroshima is back and this time they've stuck to their original formula for success: Creating instrumentals that run deep! They only included one song with lyrics, "The Door Is Open," and it's the cream of the crop because this CD is mostly a showcase of Hiroshima's latest signature jazz sound. The instrumentals on this CD is the music style of Hiroshima that has kept me coming back for 15 years!
Disappointing.......2001-08-07
After L. A. and other great efforts Hiroshima looses steam with this effort. While the album is not bad it does lack the energy of the previous efforts. A three-year mountain of waiting has produced a molehill of sound. This album is only for the most rabid fans of the group other should steer clear and spend there hard earned cash somewhere else.
Wow!.......2000-08-19
I am 19 and am sick of campus rock music, so I dared to check out something new & different. I like Kodo, but wanted something a little different. I saw the Hiroshima cd, and figured I was throwing money away, but after only 2 minutes of listening, I knew that I had a real winner. I can't wait to buy thier past music! This is a really unique sound that I only wish I would have found sooner!
Hiroshima has return in the best of form........2000-01-22
Hiroshima's latest CD release: Between Black and White, is one of their best yet. the group has return to their original jazz genre, without many vocal tracks to distract their unique sound, for existence, their previous CD: Urban World Music has contained. My first listening to this CD, had me spellbound, which the music took me into another world of it's own like no other jazz artist could maintained. I love every song on this CD, and it was well worth the wait from one of the best contemporary jazz artists in the world, and i am waiting for their next project to be released. This CD is a "MUST" to be purchased by hiroshima fans, and others who are not familiar with their great talent and unique sound. Between Black and White has deliver my expectations, and it's well worth the money spent, and more. after listening to this CD, i will guarantee that you will not be disappointed. I just can't comprehend on why this group has not receive the national recognition they truly deserve from the music industry. Spread the word.

Customer Reviews:
a talented singer/songwriter.......2003-02-07
A dude I know in Raleigh lent me this cd. I was looking for some new stuff I hadn't heard. He gave me this and told me this artist had potential. I really liked the lyrics but I was a little miffed about the absence of a backing back. While all the tracks were strong, I would like to hear how good it would be with a full band. Its obvious this guy can write a good song, as well as a strong melody. Hopefully this is not the last we've heard from Mr. Madigan. Perhaps the future will bring him a full 4 or 5 piece combo and a new recording! If you haven't bought this yet, do it now. Maybe someday I will be able to say I knew about him before he made it big!!
Great Lyrics!.......2002-09-08
I have a copy of Richard Madigans first EP (first appearance of the track "Owen and Chloe"). He is talented songwriter with bright, thought provoking lyrics. I especially liked the lyrics of "Lessons of a Ruinous War" (how often is the word "ruinous" used in a rock song ?!) I would recommend this CD.
