3 out of 5 stars some amazing songs, some so so.......2004-07-14

this is definitly worth getting for the opening track alone "frantic romantic". there are a couple scattered gems on this obscure punk artifact. a "must get" if you like sloppy punk from the late 70s with moments of song writing genious here and there.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely!! Top 10 hardcore of all time!.......2006-12-23

I may be biased coming from New York and basically growing up with the first two, and best, Warzone records. I know NYHC was a scene unto itself, but hardcore bracnhed out just as punk before it, metal after that, etc etc. This is STILL one of the greatest hardcore records, New York style or otherwise EVER! I say that in reference to the first record by far "Don't forget the Struggle." An absolute drilling, boot stompin classic just as relevant and fresh as "Age of Quarrel" by Cro-Mags, "Bad Brains", "Victim in Pain" by Agnostic and "Minor Threat." This is of course my opinion but true heads would agree, the early Warzone sound from 86-88 is just HYPE!! shredding guitars topped off by Raybeez legendary wails, howls and microphone blitz!!! The seocnd album "Open your eyes" is more of a gruff, less punk more tough guy/skinhead sound and you can hear where a band like Biohazard or Life of Agony got their juice from. A great album, just not a 5 star. Defintely a 3 and a half but it's the first Warzone album that is a must for any REAL fan of hardcore/punk music.

5 out of 5 stars NYHC at it's finest.......2006-04-08

New York Hardcore movement occured later than around the West Coast and DC. Warzone front man Raybeez came from the earlier band Agnostic Front (check them out also) as a drummer. Anyways, Warzone was a later HC act. Their records were recorded and released in the late 80's which was marking the end of everything.
This cd is a must buy. One of the finest Warzone put out.. and personally my favorite NYHC acts of all time. Great inspiration and great messages also. Just amazing all around.

3 out of 5 stars New York Hardcore but not a marvel!!!!!.......2003-09-30

Well you cannot say this the greatest hardcore work, when you compare this album to releases by Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Youth Of Today, Black Flag, Misfits, Necros or Negative Approach, maybe it's one of the greatest NY hardcore stuff, that's all. The lyrics aren't very clever, the music could be better...even if I'm a fan of Warzone especially give props to them for the "Sound Of Revolution" video clip, I know the truth, as would Ray Beez say, "open your ears " to other bands and compare!

5 out of 5 stars What it was all about!.......2001-01-17

If ever there was a cd that deserved 5 stars, it is this one. The first two Warzone albums captured the very essence of what the NYHC scene was all about - good music and a positive message. Ray's sincerity comes through in his voice and lyrics like no one elses, while the bands music drives the point home. This is it - accept no substitutes!

5 out of 5 stars NYHC Classic.......1999-07-09

Possibly the greatest hardcore CD ever, Warzone breaks out the 88 NY style with a pure message about unity, living in NYC and the scene that surrounds it.

5 out of 5 stars It would be worth...........2007-02-02

the "new and used from $39.99" price listed on Amazon, but you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Keith Arneson is a master of the clawhammer banjo style. If anyone has ever heard more skilled (or even close) playing than this, please leave me a comment with the artist's name. I've been unable to find other recordings by him. It reminds me of the playing of Henry Sapoznik, Ken Perlman and Tommy Thompson. Brilliant stuff!
Keith's playing on this recording is all solo. It is so good that you begin to appreciate that you can focus on his artistry alone. I would, however love to hear him play with a group of old time musicians. If you like old time banjo playing and can find this CD, buy it!

From the DK's-like rumble riffage that drives "Don't Bother Me," to the raising-hell anthem "What Will the Neighbors Think?" Murphy's Law maintain a heady, adolescent rage--though quite frankly they look a bit long-in-the-tooth for that--topped-off with way-loud, stream-of-punk guitars guided spiritually by Fear and Black Flag. By now, we all know the know the drill. My family is screwed up ("Dysfunctional Family"), my future is screwed up ("The Plan") and my friends are screwed up ("Shut Up," "Don't Bother Me"). What to do when life is seemingly a never-ending kick in the groin? The Murphy's Law solution for tough times is lurking in songs like "Greenbud" and "Still Smokin'." Not exactly blazingly original, but it'll put the stopper in the bottle. --John Chandler

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not the band's best, but still worth checking out.......2000-03-22

Murphy's Law last release is not the band's best, but it still has a lot to offer. Though it contains several excellent songs, there are also a few less-than-great ones that bring down the overall quality of the CD. That said, this is still a must for any Murphy's Law fan, especially for songs like "Sarasota," "Dysfunctional Family," "The Plan," "Bitter," "Greenbud," and "What Will the Neighbors Think," all of which demonstrate that Jimmy and the boys still got what it takes. But at a running time of 23:35, understand that you're paying full price for what's basically an EP.

If you're just getting into Murphy's Law (which I can't recommend enough), this CD is not the one to start with. For pure start-to-finish quality, I recommend "Best of Times," which unfortunately is long out-of-print. If you can find a used copy of it, pay whatever they're asking. It's worth it. But a more useful recommendation is the "Murphy's Law/Back with a Bong" re-release which contains the band's first two albums on one CD. In both terms of quality and quantity, it's an amazing value and serves as a terrific introduction to one of the best bands out there. Stay gold!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......1999-11-18

Murphy's Law are one of the best punk bands around. I don't really know why they're not very popular. I would pick them out as a band that would become known (by more people than the punk underground). I recently saw them live with Misfits and Gwar, they put on a great live show too. Even though this cd has 11 tracks on it, each song is about a 1 minute and 30 seconds long, so don't be expecting a long cd. Highlights are "Don't Bother Me", "Dysfunctional Family", and "Shut Up". If you buy this cd (as you should), tell everyone you know about them. They deserve some recognition.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest NYC Ska Album Ever!.......2004-11-12

Having burst onto the mid-90's ska scene a little late, I fell victim to many of the not-so-good third-wave ska-punk groups.....Then I picked up a copy of Eleven Steps to Power, and it changed my definition of what good music was. Regrettably I was never able to see the Insteps perform, but that hasn't stopped me from proclaiming this album as one of the greatest ever! It opened my eyes to some other great acts in NYC and has been in my radio ever since. Eleven Steps to Power turns a bad day good, and makes a good day great! I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes music with soul, heart, and some awesome brass.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-09-23

This CD is just great. It's very mellow. The pure combination of Lord Ezec and Mike Dijan made all 10 tracks highly phenemenal and astonishing. All songs are well-structured and have strong melodies. As much as I like fast tracks like "Ice Pick" and "No Remorse," my credits are definitely devoted to the mellow composite of songs like "Mentally Vexed" and "Crown Of Thornz." The last track "Crown Of Thornz" is beautiful! Crown Of Thornz sounds a bit different from another Ezec's band Skarhead and Icepick. Although I am a fan of all his materials, I particularly love the way he sings in 1996 for this recording. I guess, this CD is either out of print or hard to get, given that the price goes up to 30 dollars. I wish this CD will be remastered/re-released in the near future so that a new generation of punk/hardcore kids start to appreciate the beauty of Crown Of Thornz. At the same time, I have been hoping for the 2nd full-length release from them if possible! New York Hardcore!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite albums. NYHC!!!!.......2003-10-15

Crown of Thornz, in their short time together on this Earth, recorded one of the finest Hardcore albums of the 1990s, right up there with Madball's "Set It Off" and Sick of it All's "Scratch The Surface." Lord Ezec, aka Danny Diablo, who went on to be the front man for Thugcore legends SKARFACE, has his lyrical style perfectly matched with this band, even more so then he was with the Skarface lineup. The songs are mutch catchier, and although the sound isn't quite as sharp, it almost helps the overall vibe of this album as a true recording from New York City street thugs. The range of the lyrics are much more than the "Let's do drugs and kick some ass" attitude that Skarhead had. Although that was appealing for what Skarhead was delivering, COT's appeal is a littlemore universal because of the difference. Important politically and socially motivated songs appear, as well as many more songs that are definately personal projects for the band. Muscially, the band is more superior in this one album than virtually any Hardcore band I've ever heard from any state or any stylye on any album. They stray far from the basic, and very reduntant stule of most hardcore bands. The breakdowns are less predictable than someone like Shutdown (who I think little of) or even Blood for Blood (who I am a huge fan of). The beats and riffs are as catchy, if not more so, than any Sick of it All song, and the vocal range of Ezec on "Mentally Vexed" is even more superior to even Freddy Madball, who I consider to be the finest Hardcore vocalist I've yet to hear. Its a damn shame COT didn't stick around longer, and an even worse shame that their other releases are so hard to find. I consider myself lucky to have found this one stiting in a used CD store in Denver, otherwise who knows if I'd ever get to hear them by now. Mentally Vexed sits atop my list, constantly battling "Scratch the Surface" as my favorite Hardcore album.
