Live without an audience.......2007-03-21
This CD is recorded as an unplugged, live performance without an audience. Unplugged means that they did not use amped-up electric guitars on this one. The tracks are all perfomed very well. There are no dropouts, missed vocals or other anomolies. Sure, they probably went back and re-recorded some stuff to make it perfect. Each song is recorded track-at-once, not all strung together with applause or band banter. In fact, there is no banter by the band on this one. I wish they would have put more of their hits on here, but they did include a few.
Yeah, I'll add a thumbs up.......2003-03-10
Nothing new here, but a very nice performance, with some interesting takes. Nothing here makes my main Fixx MP3 playlist, but that's not because it isn't good, it's just that they basically repeat the studio work. Instead, this is a good CD to stand by itself, a Fixx concert for the car for example. Well worth the price to have, I still listen to it every now and then.
Wonderful, Fresh Versions of FIXX Favorites.......2001-10-10
I've been listening to the Fixx frequently for almost 2/3 of my life. When I hear some of the music out today, I rush back to my Fixx records. They have that '80s sound but with their own unique style (so many bands of today lack this uniqueness). When I heard about this CD--new, acoustical versions of some of their tracks--I could not wait to buy it! I imagined many great possibilities. My expectations may have been a little too high, but it is still a very pleasant album of some of their best material.
I am very pleased they chose to re-do a few of my favorite tracks that may not be as well-known as their big hits ("Woman on a Train" and "Cameras in Paris"). The best renditions are "Driven Out," "One Jungle" (very well-done, awesome guitar), "Stand Or Fall" (the ending is powerful, very different from the original studio track), "Saved By Zero" (this version is also very powerful with cool electric guitar riffs and solo, probably the track that differs most from the original), "Woman on a Train" (this also has a very different guitar riff at the intro), and "Still Around" which is simply beautiful. I was a little disappointed by "Secret Separation." It is one of my favorite Fixx tracks, but the acoustical version doesn't seem to do much for it. It may be a little too mellow for my tastes, since I've loved the song for its driving sound. "Lost Planes" also misses the driving synth riff in the original. Also, in my opinion, the beautiful track "Read Between the Lines" would have been a better choice than "Wish" or "Precious Stone."
The live tracks at the end (not acoustic)--"Red Skies," "One Thing Leads To Another," and "Deeper and Deeper" seem very out of place. The only reason I can see for adding them is that there may have been the perception that no Fixx compilation album could be complete without them.
This is probably a CD for the FIXX fanatics more than for casual fans who would most likely prefer the original versions. Reading Cy Curnin's introduction in the CD booklet, this record was obviously very important to the band and they took great care in recording it. I am glad to have it in my collection.
Very inspiring.......1999-10-20
These old and new Fixx songs sound really nice done acoustic. But to say that the whole albun is acoustic like some have said is wrong, because it has some really nice electric guitar work on it as well. Jamie is a great guitarist. My band is going to do an acoustic cover of Driven Out. This version of Driven Out is exactly how I had imagined doing it, it's quite a bit different than the original or the live versions. The only song I was let down with was One Thing Leads to Another, it kind of sounds out of place with the rest of the album. I also think the old version of Two Different Views is better than the one on this album. So if you are a Fixx fan you will really enjoy this album. I hope the Fixx will continue to release albums of this quality.
subtle and mesmerizing.......1999-07-14
i admit i was a bit skeptical when i heard the fixx(one of my all-time favorites)were redoing they're old material.so much of it has been released on various live albums that i thought "what's the point?"
well...i was pleasently blown away by the sheer beauty and artistry of these reinterpretations. do yourselves a favor and give this cd a chance. highlights: "outside","wish",lost planes",one jungle".

Great Album, and a must for IPod owners.......2005-10-18
This is another great album by the Fixx with some new songs and some redos of some great classics. The DVD side of this disc has some cool visual stuff, and my favorite feature of all - the entire album mixed in 5.1 surround sound. By the way, don't let James Simon's review keep you from buying this version. If you put the DVD side into your computer, it allows you to download either AAC or WMA files for your portable player. These audio files that you download have some kind of special processing on them which makes them sound like surround sound from your ordinary headphones! Gotta love it!
Another great CD.......2005-08-18
Why why why Why the most important magazines and the most important companies of video ignore this excellent group? Superior to several small groups of rock that are inflated by MTV or VH1, for example Coldplay. And please they do not put to The Fixx within the package of commercial and idiot groups. The lyrics and the music of The Fixx are intelligent, nontrivialities
Everything old is new again, kind of........2005-04-23
The Fixx is a band currently in some kind of musical purgatory. They are well established as a thoughtful and edgy new wave band of the late 80's. Yet they have been still releasing album with very little recognition. So in 1999 they headed out to 1099 Woodland in Los Angeles to re-record some of the hits and some songs they happened to like. This time, the songs are more accoustic and less electronic. The drums and guitar have a more natural sound, plus some of the songs like "Saved By Zero", "Driven Out" and "Stand or Fall" have extended jam endings. This was originally released as a two-disc set including several live tracks. These tracks have been cut to condense the album for the DualDisc release, which seems an appropriate move since the idea was to highlight the new accoustic arrangements. The new versions have a more soulful and less angry edge, even in the normally tech heavy songs like "Lost Planes". The ballads are more poignent than ever, especially "Precious Stone". The question then is is it worth buying it for the special features. The DVD side includes the album in 5.1 Surround, and while the overall sound quality is improved greatly, it really doesn't add much to the overall experience, especially with a sound mix that does the job but uninspired. Also, the menu for accessing each track is doable but clunky and takes a few tries to figure it out. The commentaries are useful for insight into the songs, but the behind-the-scenes and tour footage are only mildly interesting. The main reason to get this is to hear The Fixx in a slightly different and more mature light. In that case, it's worth getting.
NOTE: The DualDisc won't load in your computer, so if you're looking to rip it into an iPod, get the normal one.

Album Description
1 CD studio album + Live 2 CD set: It's not surprising that The Fixx were still around--with the same core lineup of singer Cy Curnin, guitarist Jamie West-Oram, keyboardist Rupert Greenall and drummer Adam Woods--nearly 15 years after their period of greatest commercial success. Plenty of MTV-era stars are still plying their trade, after all. What is surprising is that 12 years after their last US hit single, "Secret Separation," The Fixx were able to release 1998's ELEMENTAL on a major US label, proving how popular the group's streamlined art rock is elsewhere in the world, especially in Europe. ELEMENTAL is not far removed from The Fixx's other '90s albums. Having moved away from the art rock impenetrability of early hits such as "One Thing Leads to Another," the group created a smooth, mature pop not far removed from other grown-ups the likes of Peter Gabriel, Genesis, or even Enya.

Adult contemporary. The Fixx?.......2003-12-31
I can not believe this is The Fixx. I lost track of them at Ink and was pleased to see there are a couple of newer albums I had not known of; the Fixx are one of my favorites for such a long time, but this??? This album has few Fixx qualities other than Cy Curnin's voice. Why does this album sound so boring and bad and just plain cliche in all it attempts, I do not know why. I believe one reason I can not stomach this album is the missing Dan K. Brown on bass. His influence on The Fixx funk is larger than the little credit he gets, he kept them on a serious groove for so long, now their sound is closer to American Idol-styled bastardization than anything else.
Oh well, I still love the Fixx, but this made-for-adult contemporary poop is not worth it.
music listener.......2003-12-10
We live in a world of obvious perpetual change and as we evolve, so does that of music, and life. We live in a very different society today than we did when the Fixx recorded their(last album to date, prior too..) album 'Inc'.
As reflected in these perpetually changing and different times so does that of the music produced by the Fixx. Good base lines, clean sound in every song, well produced, compositions very well written and performed. A mature band, that has grown and changed with the times. An excellent new album. Maybe one of their best. And one last note, to the reviewer that couldn't find something "funky", give track 6 Fatal Shore a good close listen, from beginning to end. Then listen again.....
"From high of highs to depths of sorrow".......2003-12-06
As a longtime FIXX fan, I was very happy when Elemental was released and I was finally able to see the band live in a small bar in Chico, California. Elemental almost captures that early 1980s magic that was the FIXX. It starts out to be five-star material. The single "Two Different Views" is one of the best songs they've released in a long time. It is a soothing number with wonderful acoustic guitar. "Is That It?" is one of the heaviest songs the FIXX has ever recorded and sounded fantastic live. "Happy Landings" is a nice slow song and "Silent House" is a haunting track that would have fit quite snugly on the Phantoms album. Unfortunately, the last three tracks on Elemental ends the album on a very sour note. "You Know Me" sports the following lyrics: "So don't judge a book by its cover Don't count your chickens before they hatch We're all looking for that super lover" and "Life's What's Killing Me" is just plain bad, so down goes the grade. While it is no Reach the Beach or Shuttered Room, Elemental is pure FIXX. Cy Curnin and the band sound great. Casual fans may want to pass on this one but any FIXX fanatic from long ago or newcomer who can't get enough of the FIXX will enjoy having this CD in their collection.
Fixx's comeback LP fails to re-capture magic.......2003-06-10
By C.S.
If you want to talk about New Wave with a distinctive sound, then look no further than the London based outfit known as the Fixx
Channeled through the efforts of vocalist Cy Curnin, the supporting cast members Adam Woods(drums), Dan K. Brown on bass (who came on board between the "Phantoms" and 1986's "Walkabout") Jaime West Oram (guitars), and the swooping synth / keyboard sounds of Rupert Greenall, the band always craftily dropped political bombs with complex, and progressive funk- based sounds that put them ahead of other outfits.
After "Saved By Zero" and the"Reach The Beach" LP hit big on North American shores in 1983, allowing for their first record "Shuttered Room" to recieve exposure along with the success of "Phantoms", the eccentric sound and the New Wave genre as a whole, seemingly had hit it's peak.
"Walkabout" (arguably their best effort)Calm Animals"!(1989) and "Ink"(1991),were released without much fan fare. It seemed as though British New Wave and groups that were like minded were a thing of the past.
Almost eight years pased until the release of this record, "Elemental" in 1999.
The trademark gloss is used in a scaled down manner fashion, which after a number of years on the sidelines, was to be expected. As time changes,so does music. A key element that would seem fitting for an album named "Elemental" was missing and that was the FUNKY element. No You Chase The Fire" or "Built For The Future"'s here. Only "You Know Me" fits into that realm, and the punch is less potent than that of the best work on "Ink", arguably, along with "Calm Animals" the spottiest album the band ever released.
From Track Four "Happy Landings" to slightly slower tracks like "Silent House, Fatal Shore, Ocean Blue to "You Know Me",the album saves some measure of face, narrowly escapings from being burned and buried beyond recognition.
The expectations placed on a super- group like The Fixx are often times brutal and unfair.
When ther are lineup changes and/ or long breaks chemistry can take time. First LP in almost eight years can lead to a few mistakes.
Unfortunately for Cy and the band, "Elemental"is littered with plenty errors, making it a bumpy ride listening wise.Even the die- hard fans may find this record hard to play along with. Not anywhere as high in quality as their classic LP's like "Reach The Beach, Walkabout,or Shuttered Room" "Elemental" falls into the second -tier of The Fixx catalog as a two (2)- star record.

OVERLOOKED.......2002-08-07
I have always been a fan of the Fixx. They have recorded a significant amount of great music over the years which has barely been noticed. Elemental is a solid album which features what could be the best song the Fixx has ever recorded "Two Different Views". For this song alone the album is a worthwhile purchase. If this song had been a single back in the early 1980's when the Fixx enjoyed their greatest commercial success it would have been huge.
