No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31
Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.
As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.
I would call some of these pieces "newage"..........2006-08-02
Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!
Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13
Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.
This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.
If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.

HAVING HEARD EXERPTS OF THE MUSIC BEFORE, IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I
WANTED.
A collection of Morricone's most popular and entertaining.......2005-07-31
Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.

Guitarist Coco Montoya started out playing rock & roll, and it shows. On his fourth album, the former John Mayall and Albert Collins sideman rocks his blues hard, with the occasional soul-flavored ballad thrown in for variety. The album kicks off on a note that's high-energy yet relaxed, as Montoya declares that "Enough Is Enough." "I Need Your Love in My Life" is as upbeat and cheering as can be, a sure cure for rainy-day doldrums. And with "Don't Take It Personally" and "You Didn't Think About That," Montoya certainly rocks out. But he's got a soft side too, as the smoky "Fool" and the tender "Nothing but Love" handily illustrate. Although, like his mentor Mayall, Montoya is an indifferent vocalist, he more than makes up for it with his guitar work, which is both expressive and technically brilliant--the blistering solo on "Beyond the Blues" is proof enough of that. Suspicion is Montoya's first album for Alligator Records, and it's unsurprisingly a bit smoother around the edges than his previous records for Blind Pig. Still, it's a strong effort all around, with touches of real warmth and sweetness. --Genevieve Williams

Killer album!.......2007-02-16
I dont know where some of these others are coming from. This is a killer album. Great drivin blues. FOr me it was the album of the year in 2004.
Doc the blues hound.......2007-01-04
I can't figure out the folks here that review Mr. Montoya's work and call it uninspired and describe him as an "OK" guitar player. His songs are well written with inspired lyrics and his interpretations of those songs by others are equally strong. I'm sure here in Hawaii we will not have the pleasure of seeing his show but his CD's are at the top of my list of not to miss blues tunes. I highly recommend his work and this CD is no exception.
Coco's "Suspicion".......2006-08-09
If you're a Coco Montoya fan you're gonna love this. If this is your first introduction to "The Man", you couldn't make a better choice.
SOUNDS DAMN GOOD TO ME!.......2006-07-23
to the reviewer who said ""Suspicion" is alright, but it's not exciting in any way. Believe me, there are thousands of albums just like this one!" WELL...that can be said about a lot of albums, top selling or not! Doesn't make this one any less enjoyable. Like rock music, which I love, there isn't a whole lot of new and DIFFERENT sounds that can be introduced to blues.
The band NIRVANA caused a big stir when they came out but they weren't doing anything that hadn't been done before, contrary to popular belief. Calling it 'Grunge' did not make it new and different. Didn't stop them from selling tons and gaining popularity. Same s**t, different smell.
Coco Montoya is a more than capable guitarist and he rocks on this CD. I've seen Coco several times and he delivers the goods. For me there isn't a bum track on this disc. You can do a helluva lot worse than this disc, that's for sure. If you like some rockin' blues with an Albert Collins flavor, you can't go wrong with this one.

A Must Have For Coco Fans!!.......2006-06-18
This album is my favorite Coco album, right along with his first. One great blues rocker after another, with one or two smooth ballads to change it up a bit. And the sound is superb!! Excellent production. Coco sings and plays like no other. As for the much griped about "Casting My Spell On You" on this album, I too was put off a bit--thought it was corny. But then I realized that it's just a Cajun, zydeco type song, so he's just paying tribute to that kind of music. It's just a goof-off song, so let him have some fun! You can tell the band is tongue-in-cheek on it, the way the piano player flattens a note with his pitch modulator in the middle of his solo--obviously you can't do that on a real piano!
Besides after that song, Coco knocks you out with a tremendous Motown-sounding soul rocker with "Need Your Love in My Life". The sound will blow you away!

Album Description
There is a moment on Curtis Salgado's new Shanachie Entertainment CD Strong Suspicion (March 23, 2004) where it seems the spirit of Al Green has possessed him. When Curtis takes on the obscure Beatles gem "I'll be back" and gives it the full-on Memphis Soul treatment, the results are spine-tingling and eerily reminiscent of Al Green's exquisite soul-i-fication of the Bee Gees and Bob Dylan. Curtis' interpretation of "I'll be back" is one of many highlights on Strong Suspicion, his latest tour-de-force amalgam of blues/soul/rock'n'roll. With the added bonus of great guest performances from slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and singer Bekka Bramlett, it's the strongest effort yet from the man the Los Angeles Times said "is keeping the classic flame of soul music alive.

Blues So Heavy You Might Fall Down.......2006-03-09
If you know the blues, real blues, then you should know Curtis Salgado. I have been following his music for a little over ten years now. I have never known of an artist that has produced quality so consistently.
You should also know that the Blues Brothers was loosely based on Curtis' life. Curtis was also a member of the Robert Cray Band. He is a solid part of the blues and continues to tour providing riveting live shows. Throughout his career he has worked with everyone from BB King to Stevie Ray Vaughn.
This album is a continuation of his art. This album shows an further refining of his style and strength. Within the walls of the album are grooves ranging from gospel (Born All Over) to tongue-in-cheek rockabilly blues (Can't Stop Lovin').
This album swaps styles from song to song, so it never gets repetitive. His lyrics are meaningful, well planned, and flawlessly executed by voice that cuts the air like an axe and strikes like a hammer.
Buy this album now along with ten copies for your friends. Beg, borrow, or steal-it's the real deal.
Amazing talent!!!.......2005-12-25
In my humble opinion Curtis Salgado is without question the best blues/soul singer alive. He is a modern day "blues belter" with a soulful and sometimes funky edge. Check out tracks "The Sum of Something" and the blues ballad "Help me through the Day" and you will know what I'm talking about. Check out his tour dates on www.curtissalgado.com and see him live. If you are like most people you will be stunned and blown away by his massive talent.
Outstanding in Every Way.......2005-12-23
My husband introduced me to the Blues and to Curtis's music a couple of years ago. I immediately fell in love with both, but it's Curtis that I can listen to any time of day, any day of the year.
Strong Suspicion is a fantastic album. The lyrics are creative and fun to listen to, the songs are funky and original, and Curtis is soulful, funky, ironic, strong, heartfelt, and beautiful, all at the same time.
If you love the Blues mixed with a bit of funk and rock, and you appreciate a great voice, you will love this album.
Curtis Rocks the Blues!!!.......2004-10-17
I live in Portland OR... which makes me a Curtis home boy... lucky me!!! My wife and I never miss a chance to hear Curtis live, and he exceeds our expectations every time. Just last month we had the privilege to listen to him live at our neighborhood park -- WOW! He ran through most of his new CD "Strong Suspicion" and he was fantastic live. We bought his new CD on the spot, and haven't taken it out of the CD player yet!!! This CD deserves the listeners full attention. The lyrics are thought provoking in some songs and just plain fun in others. A MUST HAVE for any Blues enthusiast!
Enjoy a true blues sensation. Kelly & Lori Yock, Portland OR
Tone King.......2004-07-30
I've been a fan since the Cray days and Curtis keeps getting better and better. He doesn't rest on his success. He hones his craft. And this is clear with this latest CD. I would however like to hear Curtis feature more of his harmonica playing on his CD's. He is a wizard. His phrasing and tone are unmatched. Catch him live if you can, he'll blow you away.

HITCHCOCK BH AND AH.......2004-05-17
That's "Before Herrmann" and "After Herrmann", of course.
To film scores aficionados today, Hitchcock's name is inextricably linked to that of the great Bernard Herrmann, as well it should be.
It is now known the great director had much admired Herrmann's work from his earliest years in Hollywood, actually attempting, unsuccessfully, to hire him early on. But, admire Herrmann though he did, it would be nearly 15 years and an amazing 17 films before Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann would collaborate for the first time.
Three of the scores hear are from that period, the 40s and early 50s, a glorious age, by anyone's measure, in Hitchcock's career.
Hitchcock always understood the importance of music in his films and sought out the best composers available. As demonstrated here, he often got them. The scores for "Notorious", "Stranger on a Train" and "Suspicion" are classics of the genre.
The final score represented here, oddly placed first on the disc, is the too-brief "End Credits" music from "Family Plot", Hitchcock's last film, by John Williams.
More of all these scores would be in order, and I have to believe the original tracks from "Family Plot" must be stored away somewhere at Universal. Why they have never been released is beyond me, except to say that, of course, we're talking about Universal. If they can't make a ride out of it for one of there theme parks, well, forget it.
Find this CD if you can. It's beautifully played, conducted and recorded.
And it was obviously lovingly produced by the late George Korngold, who, besides being a successful record producer, was, of course, the son of yet another legendary composer. Hmmmm. If only he had worked with Hitch.........!
If you love that movsýBUY IT!.......2002-11-25
I had already a selection of Hitchcock movs main themes when I bought this cd. Yet, I wasn't satisfied cause it didn't contain a lot of music of Suspicion, Strangers On A Train and nothing from Notorius. So I had to buy this one cause I loved the music in that films.
This cd contains a lot of mysterious music for Bruno and romantic tones for Guy in Strangers On A Train.. Suspicion also contains a lot of music for Lina and Johny scenes. I specially like the "Too Fast" part. Notorius has a bit less music, yet it contains some fine variations of the main theme.
Of course the cd has its faults, for instance there's only the end credits theme for Family Plot and, as somebody said, there's a great deal of John Williams music in the film.
Yet, as whole the cd deserves a definitive 5 stars rating, cause of its rare music that will please any Hitch film music nuts, like me.
A John Williams' "appetizer".......2002-10-29
Fans of "Sir Alfred" fondly recall his collaborations with Bernard Herrmann on several of his biggest financial and critical successes. But, there were many other instances where films directed by "Hitch" benefited by scores from other equally masterful musicians as Herrmann. This album presents four "snippets" from other masterpieces from the master of suspense.
The true jewel is the shortest selection presented here: music from "Family Plot" by John Williams. This is a wonderfully playful score that deserves the full treatment. Hopefully, Varese will take note and do a job on this one like they did for Goldsmith's "Omen" trilogy.
Scores that have been forgotten are finally recorded.......2001-08-14
There doesn't need to be music from Bernard Herrmann all the time there's a cd that has music from Hitchcock films. This cd was made to show that Hitchcock had worked with some of the world's finest composers. I think that on track 1 and 4 that there should've have been more music. Family Plot had lots of good music that should've been performed. Well it doesn't make any difference. This cd is one of the best adaptions of Hitchcock film scores.
Hitchcock film music without Bernard Hermann? Yes........2000-06-29
Although less complete than other compilations this anthology's marit is to remind the general public that Hitch worked with many great composers (Hugo Friedhofer, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman and John Williams) through his carrer, a fact usually overlooked because of his remarkable partnership with Bernard Herrmann ("The Trouble with Harry", "The Man Who Knew Too Much", "The Wrong Man", "Vertigo", "North by Northwest", "Psycho", "The Birds" and "Marnie"). What really makes this CD special, however, is the only available recording of "Family Plot"s main title, composed by John Williams, making it a "de rigueur" acquisition for Hitchcock and Williams fans.

'Suspicion' in Chicago.......2006-08-03
'Suspicion' was the song that broke the Beatles' long string of #1 hits in Chicago. With all of the eager fans and business machinery behind Elvis' career, why would a totally unknown Elvis soundalike have a hit with this tune when Elvis didn't, (neither then or the few years before when E's version was released)?...Because it's -that- good.
Call him the "Jock-o-nator".......2001-04-16
Not only did he completely imitate Elvis to the point where I can barely tell the difference (and I KNOW Elvis), but he sang Elvis' songs like a year later! Suspicion, Pocket Full of Rainbows, Kiss Me Quick....all songs the King recorded a year or two earlier. He should be ashamed.
Early Terry Stafford Sounds a Bit Like Elvis.......1998-07-30
I bought his album in the early 60's. His copy of "Suspicion" is very close to that of Elvis. He does a great job on "I'll Touch a Star". You like Elvis imitators, then get this CD.

Customer Reviews:
OK song, good B-sides.......2001-04-10
In its singles from "Monster," "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" and "Up," R.E.M. settled back into a pattern of releasing live tunes as B-sides instead of unreleased tracks. These are decent; "Electrolite" might be better live than in the studio, and "Man on the Moon" always is a good listen, though some listeners may have heard many live versions of it already. "Suspicion" isn't one of the best tracks from "Up," though, and its release as a single perhaps shows the weakness of the album it came from. This single is good for completists, but unnecessary for everyone else.

Short but well done.......2000-11-11
This soundtrack to the 1991 Robert DeNiro film doesn't have that much to it, but what it has is pretty good. The first half is all classic jazz standards like "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" by Louis Armstrong and "It Never Entered My Mind" by George Shearing. The second half is a fine score by James Newton Howard. This will be fine addition for soundtrack collectors.
