Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
Fans have requested a live CD for soooo long. Something they could listen to which mirrored the show they just heard and saw. Tisa and I decided to record at our favorite little cafe, Hallenbecks's, which has an awesome sound system. Just 2 guitars and 2 vocals...

About the Artist
What is the secret formula that makes Ché Zuro?

Could there be more than one brew in the mix that makes the whole of her talent? Let's start from scratch. Born in Pittsburgh, Ché sprouted up in a family for whom music was a second language. It was a spontaneous affair; where one family might erupt in a squabble, Ché's clan would break out with a song. But this is where... read more

Album Description
Ché Zuro, known as part of Charlie Sexton's solo band, and writing partner-turned band-mate Tisa Adamson, have been performing steadily as a duo since the January 2000 release of Ché's 2nd solo CD "Welcome Home". "Soak" is the 3rd release from indie label Youghiogheny River Records.

The long awaited CD was recorded at the quaint cafe Hallenbeck's General Store in North Hollywood, CA, where Ché's monthly indie-artist night has seen such notables as bluesman Jake LaBotz of Chicago, folk singer Brian Joens from Iowa, and Marcy Levy of "Lay Down Sally" fame. "Soak" includes tracks from Ché's first solo endeavor "10,000 Jalama Road," "Welcome Home," as well as some previously unrecorded songs.

South Pasadena residents Tisa and Ché have been concentrating on saturating Southern California venues with their Beatlesque harmonies and Zeppelin-esque guitar styles. They are promoting this latest disc all over California as well as in the Midwest where they toured in late summer 2002.

Craig Smith recorded the tracks at Hallenbeck's General Store Studio except for track #1 "9-11," which was recorded and mixed at Sonora Recorders in Los Angeles by Richard Barron. Jeff Peters mixed and mastered the CD at Sonora.

4 out of 5 stars mysterious and cold.......2006-01-15

a very creative and mysterious album. lots of weird melodies and cold atmosphere...electronics and acoustics meet and meld in these compositions to startling effect. Mimi's vocals are superb and her songwriting approach is unique and intelligent. i would recommended Soak for fans of Bjork or Portishead. i love the cover art, with the translucent jellyfish and strange undersea life forms, it's a good representation of the music contained within.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2004-06-09

I never knew Hugo Largo but I heard "Thrilled to Be Here" one morning on NPR (Morning Becomes Eclectic) and I literally pulled over to the side of the road to write down the artist. Mimi who? I searched forever and I'm glad I didn't give up. This is a fascinating, tough-then-tender, hard-then-soft, often thrilling, often utterly haunting record. It's been in my top 5 favorites for the past three or four years now. Get it. Definitely.

5 out of 5 stars Only for quality music lovers.......2000-01-27

A powerfull, astonishing voice dazzles you into a new world, if only you take the time to let it grow inside your soul. This is the kind of music I want to listen when I need to feel I'm not alone. Thrilled to Pieces or Fire and Roses are impossible to describe, absolutely perfect. Please take a chance, it will be worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Why Are You Sitting Around Reading This? GO BUY THIS CD.......2000-01-16

Absolutely engrossing solo album by former vocalist for long-defunct art/folk/alt rock band Hugo Largo. Mimi Goese (pronounced "Gacey," I think) is an incredibly gifted songwriter and her voice is powerful, heavenly. Personal favorites include "I Spy," "The Watch" and "Believer." Haunting cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" is a treat as well. Some (imperfect) comparisons for Mimi: P.J. Harvey, Lisa Germano. Melodic, dissonant at times, brilliant! Brilliant! But you've wasted enough time...PURCHASE THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the most interesting female vocalist.......1999-10-26

"Fire and Roses" and "Clues of You" are two of the coolest, most unforgetable songs you will ever hear. I can't wait for her next album, and would love to see her in concert.

3 out of 5 stars The drummer is my Uncle's brother, no lie!.......2003-09-24

I knew about this band through family and recieved their first LP, Omniphonic Global Nova, from my uncle. To tell you the truth, it was not very good. It has the some of the same songs as Soak, but raw versions. For this next album, they hired a looper, which is not a good idea. The existing instruments should speak for themselves. Otherwise, it is a decent album with a nice grove. That might be baised though.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD no one has heard of.......2001-10-10

This was a really good CD, which had the short lived single Shuttergut (Caroline). Shuttergut was the track that got me to listen to the album, but songs like Me Compassionate, Transcindental Drift, Aphrodight, and Street Monkey keep me listening to it. Definately worth picking up, even though the price has gone up.

5 out of 5 stars really really good.......1999-07-23

i was kind of surprised to find this in my room one day it turned out one of my freinds left it over anyway i popped it in and slammed on Aphrodight and i was amazed i play guitar and i really got hooked with the GREAT use of Wah Wah i Use wah wah alot too if you dont buy this cd like me then atleast request Aphrodight on your local radio station or find a way to hear it cause it is GREAT

5 out of 5 stars a good cd.......1999-06-08

this is a good cd. these guys remind me a lot of sevendust, maybe because i saw the two together in concert. the best songs are all of them.

5 out of 5 stars Like SOAK, try FLYWATT.......1998-11-23

Still don't know what Flywatt means, but like the music...thanks to Amazon for the samplings...enjoy Drowning as well as the others from SOAK, especially Me Compassionate and Shuttergut

    4 out of 5 stars 2179 delivers.......2000-02-01

With 2179, Soak further delves into the real hybrid world of techno and metal. The songwriting has slipped a bit on this album, although it is a much heavier and sonically interesting album than FLYWATT or the self titled album. Still, if you liked those two, you will definetly like this one. There is also a hilarious but novelty type song in Burrito that although not the greatest song musically, is plain hilarious. I definetly recommend this CD to Soak fans.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!.......2000-01-12

The first 2 soak cd's were good, even though alot of Flywatt was just remixed Soak songs. But this cd is very original, except for one song, but thats ok. Every song on this song rocks except one, but Burrito is so random and funny that it makes up for the, in my opinion, poorer musical quality. "Get Out" is one of the best songs from any band I have heard in a long time. Buy this cd if u like Soak. If you don't, I will hire Steve Forbes to come to your house in the night and sing u songs from Re-Load.

5 out of 5 stars Best album yet!.......2000-01-07

We all waited way too long for this album to come out, but now that it's out, it was definately worth the wait, it's gotta be their best album yet.

        Product Description

GTA releases its first compilation and it is a winner, starting off with Shiners’ reconstructed cover of My Bloody Valentines ‘only shallow’ (exclusive to this release!) and features another 18 gems to follow! Bands include The Silent League, Tiara, Sheilbound, Duraluxe, Sciflyer, Absinthe Blind, Wayne Everett, Frank Lenz, Electro Group, Camden, Lull Account and many more! 19 songs in all by 19 artists. This compilation was a monster to sequence and is a great introduction to the label! The best comp you’ll ever buy. You wont be sorry. "Compilations are a tough proposition for your everyday music blogger. Most of the time you end up with a few great songs, a few bad ones and a large amount of mediocre filler. I try to avoid them at all cost, but I recently got a package that had what may very well end up becoming one of the best compilations I own. It features new and unreleased music from a collection of bands that have released music on Grand Theft Autumn or have been close to the label through related projects or collaborations and journeys with the former bands of the label owners. Trust me, it?s not by lack of talent that these bands have flown under the radar. It?s one of the unfair realities of the current music landscape, that for every band you enjoy there are another 50 that you?ve never heard of that are even better. Kicking things off with a track from the most well-known band of the bunch, the now defunct Shiner, the disc ebbs and flows from one track to the next, almost seamlessly, better than any mix tape I ever spent weeks working on. And that is the impression that this disc radiates, that the Grand Theft Autumn guys got around and made each and every one of us a personal mix tape with songs from their favorite bands, bands that they know you would like, but haven?t heard yet. Of course I have my favorites of the bunch, as you will have yours and they will differ from your neighbors, but the greatness of this disc, and what sets it beyond the average compilation, is that its strength lays not in the greatness of the tracks it contains but in its ability to act as a complete album of great songs that everyone with any human decency will enjoy." - Mike, Em P Me music blog

When you buy the single you look for what fell by the wayside in recording the album. You're not the one. Well my purchase price was satisified with that one song. Any Stevie/Sheryl composition I'll purchase. Chances Are enhanced this purchase as it is delightful. To get these two you will have to "SOAK UP THE SUN".

        5 out of 5 stars Chances Are.......2003-07-16

This is the single for Soak Up The Sun by Sheryl Crow, the lead single from her 2002 album C'MON C'MON. The song is an infectuous summer song that will have you humming and tapping along to the song. It comes in the radio edit version and the album version. The real reason to purchase the single is for the b-sides. "You're Not The One" is a haunting song Sheryl did with Stevie Nicks, but the true gem is "Chances Are". This should have been on the album. It's a ballad type song with haunting vocals and interesting lyrics. A must have for the Sheryl Crow fan.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes and quite a bit potential.......2004-07-07

On her debut CD, Rachel Farris' music reminded me somewhat of a teenage Nina Gordon. The first three songs -- You Think, I'm Not The Girl, and Soak -- are probably the best on the album. I'm Not The Girl, in particular, is imbued with a distinctive raw emotion and pathos. Soak, in contrast, has an infectiously upbeat, boucy quality to it. The remainder of the songs, while drifting into sappy-teenage-love-song territory, are still well performed tracks. Certainly one must give Farris credit for having written the music & lyrics for the entire album herself, something that definitely sets her apart from the majority of her contemporaries. This one is worth giving a listen. Farris shows a lot of potential. Hopefully we will be hearing from her again in a couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best CD I've ever bought!.......2004-06-15

Rachel Farris is a truly talented artist.
Not only a wonderful singer, but also a wonderful songwriter.
She wrote all of her songs! Nobody does that anymore. AND she co-produced her album!

It rocks. Seriously. If you think Avril rocks, Avril's album can't hold a candle to Rachel's. Every song is good and there's variety. Her music is so fun to listen to and her lyrics are very deep. I've laughed and cried listening to this album.

I want to help spread the word about this album, because it's honestly that good! I believe many of these songs could be pop-rock classics if more people knew about Rachel.

1 out of 5 stars damn, not another teenie bopper!.......2004-05-10

rachel farris's debut album soak is eaisly the worst album of the year. much like hilary duff, rachel uses "heavy metal" gitars and instramentals in a attempt to be edgy.
and again like hilary duff her bublegum pop voice confuses the sound. her lyrics go no where when she is "deep" and when her innuendos and abscrities rest the songs are pointless.
i am not going to further furnish your imaganation with my opinion, i will however save you the trouble
DO NOT BY THE ALBUM OR SUPPORT RACHEL FARRIS IN ANYWAY
if you as a listener have any integrity.

5 out of 5 stars The best female disc in years.......2004-04-11

This is hands down the best female disc I have found in years. She has a great voice, maybe a little young sounding for the harder songs, but still great. The lyrics aren't the best ever, but they aren't bad either. It's obvious when listening to her singing that they mean something to her, she sings with real feeling for the songs. She wrote all words and music, which always makes the disc better to me, they know exactly what they were feeling when writing the songs and so know how the songs should feel when recorded. The disc is not like the rest of the female music that has been flooding the market lately, way overproduced bubblegum music. The production on this is excellent, she herself taking part in it, and the songs actually rock. A good mix of rockers and slower songs, every song on the disc is good. Can't understand why the truly good discs go unnoticed while the lousy ones sell huge, this should have sold millions. Sure glad I stumbled across this while trying to find some new music one day, a must have CD. If you want something different from what else is out there, this is it. Different is good in this case. Hopefully we will hear much more from her in the future. I've heard people saying she was dropped by her label but according to Rachel herself as of March 15 she is still happily with Big 3 Records and writing songs for a new CD. Let's hope we hear from her again soon.

5 out of 5 stars WORTH EVERY PENNY!.......2003-11-27

This cd is worth every penny. She has a good voice and its even more impresive that EVERY song on the cd is writen by her.
the top 3 songs on this cd are:
        1) Its all you
        2) Wild
        3) I guess this is love

3 out of 5 stars Well worth what I paid........2006-03-05

This is a disc I bought because of the Soundgarden cover, and because I got it for a penny. Overall I do like this album. I would classify it as general electronica, with touches or trip-hop, and simply pop. Somewhere between the likes of Massive Attack and Poe, maybe. As for the cover "Black Hole Sun", it's decent, and sounds like what you might think it would. In short, I'm sure I'll play this from time to time, or at least enough for it to really "Soak" in. Get it used.

5 out of 5 stars Mimi is THE queen of ethereal cool!!.......2003-03-21

If you don't think "Fire and Roses" and "Clues of You" are two of the coolest songs you've ever heard, listen to them again (and again and again). Comparisons to people like Kate Bush may give you a clue, but they don't tell the whole story. Since Mimi started her "big label" work with Michael Stipe (of REM) and then Moby, her work has grown in depth and quality. I can't wait until her next album comes out!!!

5 out of 5 stars Art Rock Lives!.......2002-11-05

King Crimson meets Kate Bush? No, I wouldn't narrow it down like that. Soak is unclassifiably original and not the least derivative or cliche.

This poetry is intense, intelligent and so female. You can understand every word. How 'bout that? I've loved Mimi's singing all the way since Hugo Largo. She is an incredibly brave and smart singer. I love her theatricality and coolness, her control and how she pushes her limits. Can I cover Fire and Roses? That song got me through a very hard time, allowing me to scream and cry along with her in the car, shaking my head knowingly about it all. This is grown-up music about being present in the moment of confronting truths, about memory, about love, about self.

The music is unusual. Electronic but not about beats or collage for collage's sake. It is beautiful, rhythmically angular and harmonically challenging, like everything she and Hahn Rowe have done. Some songs rock, others trance out. It's all good.

        5 out of 5 stars Que musica!.......2001-11-20

I don't even know what to say, this is the first time I've ever felt compelled to write a review in amazon.com. This CD is soooooooooo cool. It took some time to grow on me, I admit, but every time I listen to it, I hear something new. It's thought provoking and beautiful and different. Definitely cool to just chill out to, a rainy day CD, a rant and rave CD...it's just really good. Yeah! Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Your Future Happiness Depends on Purchasing This CD.......2000-11-18

A wonderful surprise. Emotionally charged, this grabs you from the get-go and won't let you loose. But don't take my word for it: listen to the samples above, esecially "I Spy," my favorite on the album. And yes, that's a cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" -- a very haunting cover.

While you're at it, check out Mimi's earlier incarnation as the vocalist for Hugo Largo. Their album "Drum" was re-issued on CD a while ago.

No -- no need to thank me. Just knowing I've brought joy to your life is enough.
