Sideways Soul: In A Dancehall Style
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Some of the greatest dub albums are jam sessions. Think of Lee "Scratch" Perry's genius Black Ark recordings in the '70s or Adrian Sherwood's early experiments in noise with On-U Sound. New York City punk-soul outfit Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Dub Narcotic's salaciously deep-voiced producer Calvin Johnson had already recorded together at Johnson's Olympia studios for JSBX's 1998 album, Acme. Around the same time, during a two-day session, the artists laid down the nine tracks that comprise this loose, sprawling, eminently lovable studio album. JSBX was the house band, Johnson the mischievous frontman. So what d'ya get? Plenty of echoed harmonica, deep bass drums, James Brown-style squeals, and lyrics that focus mostly on food and being cool ("Banana Meltdown," "Chicken Legs," "Frosty Junction"). "If you come to my town," Calvin sings on the 10-minute funkafied "Fudgy the Whale," "you've got to know all 16 dances." Damn right! --Everett True --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Album Description
K'naan, former refugee, now based in Toronto makes music that is a mixture of hip hop, African beats and world music intertwined - combining African drums, chants, handclaps, guitars and organic instrumentation sets this album outside the hip hop herd. K'naan creates music with a message. Leaving Somalia at the age of thirteen on what turned out to be the last commercial flight ever to do so, amidst a crumbling society and the end to this day of any form of central government K'naan carried with him a very strong sense of purpose as well as his amazing lyrical gift, which has made him a beacon for other artists a well as those dedicated to global change. Canada only release! With his unique voice and truly authentic style, K'naan brings an enormous dose of realness and urgency to the hip-hop world in a time when people are desperate for it. From a personal and cultural history rooted in poetry (being the grandson of one of Somalia's most famous poets), K'naan widens the traditional hip-hop perspective. Discovered and produced by Track & Field, same producers that discovered and produced Nelly Furtado, Dusty Foot Philosopher is comprised of 18 total tracks including 'Smile', 'My Old Home', 'In The Beginning', 'Voices In My Head', 'Wash It Down', 'Hoobaale', 'Rap Gets Jealous' and more. BMG. 2005.
Album Details
Negotiating his Way Forcefully Through a Gritty Sandstorm of Spoken-word and African Instrumental Interludes, K'naan Brings Us a Collection of Funky, Original Backgrounds Nearly as Weighty as the Cautionary Words that Float above Them. In his Liner Notes, K'naan Recounts a Nearly Fatal Incident Involving a Live Grenade which He and a Couple of his School Friends Discovered in their Classroom in Mogadishu, Somalia. While Playing with the Mysterious Object, which Initially Looked Like a Potato, the Grenade's Pin Slipped. Throwing it as Fast and as Far as He Could, the Destructive Object Lay to Ruin Much of the Empty Building. Thankfully, No One was Hurt. Then Only Ten Years Old, K'naan (Whose Name Means "The Traveller" in Somalian) Credits that Event as the Watershed Moment which Led Him to Become a Writer.

Addictive and thought-provoking.......2007-07-07
Everyone will have their own opinion, but in my opinion (which is the best! : * ) this is the best CD I've purchased in a long time. If you like Arrested Development, Donnie, Stevie Wonder, India Arie or anybody who's not just singing or rapping for the sake of filling airtime, you'll love it. In The Beginning makes me dance, Hoobaale makes my think and sing at the same time, and What's Hardcore makes me laugh at the stupidity of mainstream hip-hop "gangstas". I love it.
Phenominal.......2006-12-16
I generally listen to reggae and have recently gotten into more Hip-hop and Rap. So, while I may not have the best perspective on this type of music, I will put it simply: this album blew me away. I really can't put my finger on it, but K'naan is fantastic. He is clever, angry, poetic, lyrical, and contemplative all at the same time. Besides the rythims, beats, etc., which are great, K'naan is able to give the listener a picture of whatever he's rhyming about, literally a picture in your mind. And, this is fundementally positive rap, hard to find no doubt, and it also makes you want to stand up a move around. I recommend this album to any fan of music, and I anxiously await K'naan's sophmore attempt.
Refreshing, innovative, dynamic.......2006-11-27
I normally don't go for hip hop and I hardly ever give 5 stars, but quality trumps genre any day, and this is some great stuff. Musically influenced by hip hop beats and his native Somalia, he manages to keep them successfully distinct. When he does merge them, it is with skill and style and wit. Too often merged styles end up sounding muddy, but not here.
The lyrics are poetic. He deals with some very serious subjects, but manages to inject humour and pragmatism without cheapening the message.
Finally, the album works well as a whole, not just a collection of songs, though you'll probably want to add some singles to your playlists.
Enjoy!
Masterfull.......2006-10-19
I had a chance to see K'naan at the Breedlove Tour with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharaoh Monche and Jean Grey and let me tell you he rocked the show. I had the chance to meet him after the show as he was selling his beautiful album at the back of the Fillmore in Denver and what a guy. Humble, kind, very down to earth. His music expresses the hardships of leaving his homeland and the unimaginable pain of living in modern day Somalia. His music expresses the frustration and anger about his homeland but also brings hope about the future, as well as awareness as most people especially in the U.S. have no idea what is going on over there because CNN and other corporate media just cover it as a rogue state. K'naan puts the human element in his music and expresses it beautifully. Great all around CD, original beats, lyrics, and well put together. Keep on fighting K'naan wherever you are.
Overwhelmingly Beautiful and Poetic!.......2006-10-04
I'm an East African who grew up right over the border from Somalia and even then, I've never heard anyone say anything about Somalia other than rehashing CNN's point of view. It was always just a "messed up" place and nothing else. Finally this young brother speaks with such passion about the life and people that LIVE there...despite the turmoil and everything else there is LIFE and LOVE and K'Naan does such a phenomenal job getting that across. Listening to his tracks you can feel the pain, the frusteration, the hope...everything. He also acknowledges that just because he's no longer in a war-torn country doesn't automatically mean that life is great, a thought rarely discussed when it comes to refugees. It's often assumed and believed that we've done them all a great huge favor by removing them from their country...and while it's obviously better not to live under the fear of death, there's also the fact that generally people prefer to live in their home surroundings with the people they love and are familiar with. Migration, even to the lands of milk and honey in the west, is a HUGE sacrifice. Bravo K'Naan! This CD is a major contribution to Africa's history and to the masses whose thoughts and feelings are rarely acknowledged in an affirming an unbiased manner. An ESSENTIAL piece to anyone's library!

With Gypsy in My Soul, Connie Evingson goes from cool Beatles to hot jazz. As a follow-up to her Let It Be Jazz, Evingson pays tribute to one of the most distinctive and wonderful sounds in jazz history, the French hot clubs of guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930s and '40s. Assisting her are three different bands, Parisota Hot Club and Clearwater Hot Club from her Minnesota home and Pearl Django from Seattle. All have the guitar-led sound just like Django Reinhardt, while Clearwater and Pearl Django add the violin that also helped make the Django sound distinctive (in his case, most famously by Stephane Grappelli). (Parisota substitutes a clarinet, which was a lesser-known aspect of the Django sound.) The groups' sound is also supplemented by accordion (Dan Chouinard and Patrick Harrison), vibes (Susan Pascal), and other instruments. Gypsy in My Soul isn't a note-by-note re-creation: Django didn't use vocals (Evingson provides lyrics to his "Anouman" music for "Django's Premonition" and she sings Susannah McCorkle's lyrics to his "Nuages"), and though he did perform American standards, those wouldn't have included Sting's "Until" or the Nat "King" Cole hit "Nature Boy." But it's a fun listen on its own terms, and might open up a new audience for Django. --David Horiuchi
Album Description
"Hot Club Swing" in the style of Django Reinhardt, with vocals! Jazz vocalist Connie Evingson sings with three different Hot Club groups: Pearl Django, Parisota Hot Club and Clearwater Hot Club. This CD features tunes typical of the genre ("Caravan", "Night and Day", "I'm Confessin"), Django originals ("Nuages", "Anouman"), and some unusual offerings by Sting ("Until") and Dizzy Gillespie ("Dizzy Atmosphere").

Gypsy Jazz lives.......2005-11-07
Connie Evingson has never sounded better in this tasty collection of gypsy infused tunes. Backed by three different groups, this unapologitically romantic effort is full of infectious rhythms and solos. Whether it is a song aimed at the heart or the feet, Gypsy in my Soul will lift your spirits. Makes you want to grab your Gitanes and head for a late night cafe.

Real Classics.......2006-04-04
Unlike a lot of Screw compilations, which are usually nothing more than throwawy tracks... this collection collects a large majority of the H-Town tracks that defined the original Screw subculture. Mixed by the Swishahouse, back in the good old days whenRon C and Mike Watts chopped it up together.
If you are new to slowed music and want to hear what it is about without searching out the true underground, than this is a great start. The mixes are slow and sloppy - just like they used to be. Don't expect great quality - and be aware that sometimes the records will even skip. These are raw mixes - and most people who consider themselves Screw Heads would have it no other way.
Worth it for 'Braids and Fades' alone!

Sista Monica's comeback CD tells it all!.......2005-09-29
Ohmygosh! Reading the insert, I learned that Sista Monica was absent for two years battling and beating a difficult cancer. Sista Monica wrote amazingly inspirational songs about her story in this album, many autobiographical. Can't Keep a Good Woman Down, Cookin' with Grease, It's Good to be Alive!, Surrender to Love. Amazing and hot music! I found myself dancing wildly in my livingroom, by myself, and then bought all her other albums (this was my first). The insert also told me she is donating 10% of the sales to healingjourneys.org, whose trademark is "Cancer as a turning point, from surviving to thriving!" Maybe the Powers that Be healed this woman so she can continue to inspire people for a long time to come! I have since read about her winning audiences over immediately, as she has sung all over the world. Treat yourself to this one. And you'll help people in real need too. Wow.

Well worth it.......2006-08-15
This DVD is well worth the price the music selections make it very easy to use depending on your mood. I would highly recommend it.
In love with it!.......2006-08-09
Really nice CD, it just combined in a nice way everything I was looking for in a music for strip-dance.
First of all, it's a good music (and hot!), I like to listen to even without stripping, just like a normal good-quality CD.
Second, there are several sets of the music on the disc (Hip-Hop, R&B, Instrumentals, Dance) that allows to choose the music which better corresponds to my mood, and perform different styles of strip-dance. (that's really good cause I don't need several CDs)
Finally, good point is that there are no gaps between the songs, and they go smoothly one into another. It's really an advantage when you performing your dance!

Sophomore Blues.......2007-02-19
I was really excited about this cd since I fell in love with Christion's first album, "Ghetto Cyrano". However, I was severely disappointed. It doesn't even have as much soul as most songs on the RADIO!!! The beats are generic and boring, lyrics sound forced and you can just tell that these guys are no longer singing about stuff they understand or know about. "My Reason"?!?! That song's just cheesy and I only listen to it for a good laugh. And "Where Yo Girlfriend At"? Again, only for a good laugh. Not sure what happened between the first album and this one (other than Allen Anthony's departure), but things just ain't the same. And GW's right, most of the reviews claiming this is a must-buy are from family members, friends, managers, and other business partners. KNyte had something to do with their silly "Let Em Know" video, I believe. Anyway, I hope y'all find this review helpful....if you want a Christion cd, go for the first one. But hey, everyone has their own taste in music and maybe y'all don't care bout listening to the real..... but if you do, then stay far far away from this cd (unless you just want somethin for laughs).
Different from first but still smooth.......2006-05-17
I have been a fan of christion since they first came out. I do admit that this is some what different from the first in terms of the music. I think what makes the songs good are the story lines. I loaded the cd to my MP3 player with the first and compared and it still keeps that street (pimps and players) style to the songs. There are some good tracks that start on chapaters 4 and on. The rest are something that I would say you have to relate to in order to understand. You can notice the difference of A.A not being in the group. As a matter of fact, the best songs on the cd are when he appears on the track. Overall I would say its not a bad CD but if you compare it to the first that was more for the "grown and sexy" then you would not feel it as much. You can also tell that the touch of Jay-Z is not on this release. He played a big part in the story lines they wrote about while Dame Dash selected the tracks. Out of all the tracks I think most would fall in love with Slown Down, and Broken Streets. "My Reason" should be loaded to your romantic selection. If you are someone that can relate to the stories then by all means you will enjoy the tracks. As for A.A I hear he had an album coming out called Oakland International so lets hope that will entice the hears of the ones missing him.
Whats going on here?.......2006-04-19
First, I was really looking forward to this album. I do understand that people have different tastes but "a must have", and "slammin" and "what music has been missing". I think I found all of the fans that think that American Idol is soulful. This is either a really distasteful joke or its the mothers of the artists leaving comments. Im not trying to rip anyone apart but this album bears "NOT ONE" resemblance of the creativity, the production, and vocals that this group once carried. Ok...so Its different. No big deal. But Im just trying to figure out what these people are listening to. All and all, dont take my word for it. And dont take theirs. Buy it for yourself and Im sure it will become clear on whether this is the last Christion album you buy.
Their may have been a reason for no album in so long.......2006-01-25
The original Roc-A-Fella soul brothers are finally back with an album of smoothed out love songs and up-tempo club jams. The Roc fell apart and they moved on to The Mint and deliver a 20-track album with five chapters and mix results. My first thoughts about this album were that it was too long and that has proven to be true upon repeated listens. The other question I have is what the significance is of the chapters. They are trying to tell a story but the songs in each chapter do not always match up with the chapter's title. As far as the music goes, it's just ok. There are lots of R&B/Soul singers out doin their thing and these two are no different. They have the intense sexual songs (Presidential Suite #8) and they have the love song that goes out to the girl they lost (Farrah #15), did they ever stop and think maybe if they were not out trying to freak every girl they might not have lost that one perfect one? The production is nothing special, Kenni Ski does a decent job pulling double duties as singer and primary beat maker. The one thing that it seems these brothers got goin for em is that they can sing. Their harmonies and verses are generally on point and stand out at times, compared to the rest of today's modern so-called "Soul" singers. If you are looking for some real classic type soul music then go check Bilal, but if you want modern R&B with a touch of the classic seventy's sound this album will probably at least wet your appetite.
WHAT HAPPPENED TO THE CROONERS???.......2005-12-14
Christión did some serious croonin' on their debut release "Ghetto Cyrano", bringing us hustlers-need-love-too anthems and street-life grooves reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. Now on their very disappointing follow-up "Project Plato", Christión minus vocalist Allen Anthony have become a bit too mainstream for my taste, sounding a lot like these new kids on the block who beg and whine just to make a dime--y'all know who you are!!! Nothing on "Project Plato" grabbed me, although I'm sure with the current condition of music today it will appeal more to the masses. Every song here lyrically sounds ridiculous and the sexiness seems forced, unlike on "Ghetto Cyrano" when it was natural (obviously due to Anthony's absense). I tried listening for a glimmer of hope on this release--a song that made me fall in love with Christión in the first place, but I simply couldn't. Maybe as I listen to "Project Plato" more, it will grow on me, but that's not likely. I know each artist's release has to progress and shouldn't sound dated. I didn't expect Christión to sound the way they did eight years ago, but you gotta admit at least eight years ago--during the Timberland era--music was music and Christión had it goin' on.

Album Description
Halleluah! "From The Private Bag" , the second release from the Mingo boys, has finally been born. This long awaited, long anticipated sophomore effort contains the best of both worlds: new original tunes that have quickly become crowd favorites, and live versions of old Mingo classics.
Customer Reviews:
Funk and Jump.......2007-04-01
It's hard to typecast this grooving bunch. Those who see them live rave about them, unfortunately I'm miles (x 1000) from Texas. Pick up Private Bag and Yesterday and you won't stop listening. Not a bad track in the mix. Private Bag shows how good they are live with the second set of tunes.
What more could you want? A horn section that lays a groove and smokes some tight riffs. Vocals that are spot on. Rhythm section that lays it down.
Don't want to compare them because they are on their way to being incomparable! But you can hear it all from Oakland to N'awlins... and then some.
Awesome CD!!!!.......2006-06-07
I love the funky rhythms and the beat. Groovy! Makes me wanna get up and dance.
Live.......2004-06-02
This band is amazing live. The groove and the vibe that they set is radiating in any atmosphere. I strongly recommend seeing this band live.
Great.......2004-05-13
These guys are great live!!
Ran into them performing on a weekend trip to Austin -
they are one of those few bands you prefer to hear live.
Either way the CD is amazing. I hope they make it big,
so much better than some of the junk out there winning gold!
Greatest Live Act Ever.......2004-02-09
It's hard to categorize Mingo Fishtrap because they have so many influences. Bottom line, Mingo is a talented jam band that has soul and funk laced into their rock. The closest comparison I have is the 70s band Tower of Power, which Mingo likes to cover sometimes. Do yourself a favor, buy this album then go see them when they come to your town! They tour Austin, San Antonio, and DFW frequently. I'm surprised they haven't made it nationwide yet, their sound is so unique and their band is so diverse. The bass player is the father of the lead singer! How cool.
The best track on FROM THE PRIVATE BAG is Bitta Honey, it's a catchy jazzy tune that you will listen to over and over!

The kid is really the future of rap.......2004-11-22
BeKaY is what he says he is...The Future... The kid brings in funny one liners, hardcore lyrics, nice beats and hes only getting better. He is often compared to eminem, but after encore if you compare this talented strait from the streets emcee to that man that just fell off, you deserve to be shot. Simply put the kid spits FIRE.
