Orange Ep [EP]
Editorial Reviews
The Marietta Times, 1999
"They capture in the studio! The ep reminds me of a young Radiohead/Smashing Pumpkins meeting the Cure."
ANON
"See them live, you've got to treat yourself to their latest ear candy release for The Orange EP."
Album Description
Path of Allyson's sound is very melodic and dynamic, weaving a textured canvas for the ear and mind. Their diverse sound has been compared to such bands as Radiohead, Bauhaus, Psychedelic Furs, and Tool.

For such a short cd............2000-07-09
...It is really wonderful. My favorite song is "Dry" which is a fast song with the vocals kind of distorted. Cutting and Draining has a heavier edge to it. All the other songs are more focused on use of vocals rather than pounding guitars, which is very rare in a band like this. If you like this band try Incubus or (hed) p.e.

When Good Rock Goes Bad.......2003-09-01
I had the (dis)pleasure of listening to this EP around a month and a half ago. I was on a trip heading to FL when my friend looks at me and says, "do you want to hear the most disappointing EP ever?" Naturally this perked my curiousity, so I agreed, and he slipped Mock Orange's First EP into my car's CD player. My first reaction was, "this is fine, I don't see the problem." That was, of course, before the singer came in. I'm not sure what happened between The Record Play, and the First EP, but the singer had drastically changed. What was more irritating was that the sound was no longer indie rock, but more set towards a Honky Tonk country beat. Now, for all of the disbelief, the bright side is that for the genre of music they aimed for was very well done. The problem is that a band so creative and clean, switched into a genre so completely void of what they were previously. I lost almost all my respect for them on the spot. I had read the reviews here that spoke of an amazing EP, and a great new direction. New destination to where, I ask. As far as I can tell, they went from non-commercial sonic perfection, to market targeting sonic irritation. Now, if I recall, there was one song somewhere in the EP that was more classic Mock Orange style, but even that paled next to the feel of their previous CDs.
If you are a hardcore fan of Mock Orange, and nothing will persuade you to changing that feeling, then I urge you to buy this CD for nothing other than pure fandom and frothing-at-the-mouth obsession(you deserve to waste your money). However, if you find that the change of directions that some bands take can be of bad taste, surely, do not buy this CD. I'm very glad I heard it before I decided to shell out some money for the actual EP.
2 Stars for denying your musical roots, losing your touch, and being generally unappealing. Mock Orange, you're lucky you managed 2, because while I disliked this EP, I can't deny that you did it well. Kudos to at least being decent musicians.
something original in todays music.......2003-05-23
some of the most well written songs i have heard in a long while. everything is just as great as all the older lp's but more mature. in one of the reveiws below someone mentioned that these songs had a poppy sound to them and thats just a bunch of bull. these songs are very far from poppy. they ahve sort of a old classic rock feel to them that just makes me drol. not a bad song on here, and the full length should be more of the same.
This band is never content with their sound, it seems........2003-05-18
Mock Orange seems stuck in a permanent identity crisis. Their first album, "Nines and Sixes," has an almost-Lagwagon feel to it. Their sophomore effort, "The Record Play," [reviewed here] seemed to owe more to bands like Braid and American Football than anything on Fat Wreck. Now, after a label change, the band brings us their latest EP, aptly entitled "First EP." Why do I believe the title is so accurate? Well, it's because once again the group has seemed to give their sound a complete overhaul, almost to the point where they sound like a completely new band. If I had to name some influences on this record, my mind would immediately run to bands like Modest Mouse, Pavement, and Death Cab For Cutie, as opposed to their harder influences of the past.
Gone are the crazy time changes and frantic guitar riffing. In their places are more straightforward pop songs coupled with slide guitar. Main singer Ryan's vocals have taken a drastic turn, as well. I still can't decide if it's for better or worse. On past recordings he seemed to be spitting out his vocals with intensity and vigor, whereas now his voice seems to take a more relaxed approach, playfully integrating his falsetto with the spacious guitar parts.
Like I said before, this EP makes the band sound like a completely different entity - keeping up with their string of identity reassignments. Standing on it's own two feet, this EP can hold it's own and is actually pretty original-sounding in today's music scene. If this is the new direction of Mock Orange, I can't wait to hear their upcoming full length.
Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if the next album sounds like a polka band.
i dont understand...........2003-05-14
how anyone could like the older stuff better then this ep. i hope they have a full length coming out very soon because after hearing these songs i just want more. everyone buy this CD. this CD destroys the other 2.
ssssssswwwwwwwweeeeeeetttttttt.......2003-05-14
I had never heard of these guys before and a freind of mine had a mix CD with the song diving day on it. after hearing the song i wanted to know who the guys were because it just blew me away. not often do i just hear a song for the first time and freak out like i did when i heard that one. the next day when we got back home i looked up the band on amazon to order that CD with driving day. found out the have 3 CD's and got them all. The other 2 are good but this ep has really changed music for me. everyone should check it out. you will be very sad if you do not take a chance with this one.

If you could have only 1 CD in your collection, the original reace nasty e.p. would have to be it, but that CD was only available for purchase at shows while The Situation was on tour in Europe. (That EP and Free Joe Castro t-shirts are now bringing in big bucks from online auction sites.) But if you can't have that CD, don't worry. This recently released version is better than the original with a new recording of Why I Can't Relate and a 6th hidden bonus live version of Cherry. This CD is worth buying. The Situation has a unique sound that is addictive and much more original than the majority of the crap playing on the radio today. FREE JOE CASTRO!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
2nd Single from "Call The Ambulance" with B-Side Gems Hilter (Dub) and a lost "Back and Forth" track B.I.T.D........2006-04-24
"Stoneman" was probably the most commercially viable track off of the complex and challenging debut album by Hilt titled "Call The Ambulance: Before I Hurt Myself". I can see the notoriously money-hungry execs at Nettwerk thinking they might have Alternative Rock gold when this song surfaced from Hilt: a Skinny Puppy side-project of Cevin Key and his old pal (and former band-mate pre-Puppy and even pre-Images In Vogue) the incomperable Alan Nelson (R.I.P.).
Nettwerk went so far as to actually shell out money for a promo video (shot in India, the story line is a man who keeps blacking out and waking up with visions of a Stone man killing people who finds out he may actually be the killer, and stars Key and Nelson).
And while I do find "Stoneman" a listenable song, and although I am myself a Puppy fanatic, the song has never rated that high on my chart of favs. Frankly, it's down near the bottom, possibly because of its commercial sound, and possibly because it really doesn't go anywhere, it kind of meanders on and on. I know this could be considered sacrlidge for those who worship at Puppy's alter, but I gotta be honest.
The opening mix, called the "Mania Edit" is really just your standartd extended mix, i.e. more of the same. The next mix is the "Video Edit" which is, obviously, the edit used for the promo video, and is much tighter and less wandering than the "Mania Edit"
But, those two remixes of "Stoneman" aside, the real gems on this single are the last two tracks.
The "Dub Mix" of the album track "Hilter" by Marc Ramaer is an almost loving homage to the trademark early 80's sound of cEvin Key's mutant synth pop which features as its foundation analog drum machine beats pumping along hypnotically and big analog bass synth notes marching over the beat.
Most of the tracks on the album "Call The Ambulance" sound suspisioucly like Skinny Puppy out takes from somewhere between 84 and 89, and seeing just how much of that kind of material has surfaced in the "Back and Forth" series of archive material (as well as the brilliant mail-order only "From The Vault" series) I don't think I'd be too far off the mark there.
But back to "Hilter" it's one of the tracks which sounds the most like a bona fide Skinny Puppy track with the exception of the calm cool and collected vocals of Al Nelson which sound like poetry being read by an either stoned, or just spaced out, 50's Cat Daddy.
As with my review of the "Get Stuck" single, it would be impossible to talk about this song without pointing out the hard to avoid fact that it sounds just like a Trent Reznor song. In Reznor's defense, the album "Call The Ambulance" was released in 1989, the same year as his "Pretty Hate Machine", but in Reznors "prosecution" one can't avoid the fact that the man has admitted to plundering Puppy's more commercially viable aspects of their trademark sound which is evident all over "Hate Machine" not the least of which is in the startelingly plagaristic rip off of Puppy's 1986 track "Dig It" which Reznor barely hid under the title "Down In It".
Now, don't jude me too fast as a Reznor hater. I'm not. I find most of his work rather enjoyable, if a bit over melodramatic and keeping well in mind that he is really just recycling the music of those pioneers who came before him (Puppy, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, etc.). And, believe it or not, I've never really bought into the common opinion (held by Oger and Key themselves among many thousands of others) that Reznor is trying to imitate Ogre on stage. I think once you look past a vague similarity in physical features, Ogre's theatrical, almost Carnival stage presence is light years away from Reznor's Jim Morrison woe is me stage personna.
But despite all this, I think if you played "Hilter" (either version, LP or Dub Mix) for someone they would probably think you were playing a Nine Inch Nails track for them.
And then there's the last track, "B.I.T.D. (Beer In The District) which is actually from 1984. This track sounds like what would come to be known as the "Back and Forth Series" tracks which Key and his friend Ken "Hiwatt" Marshall have been bringing to the light of day for the past decade and a half.
"B.I.T.D." is definately an "experimental" track. It sounds like a demo, or even less than a demo, an in studio jam session. It's 12 bit digital crunch in the rhythm section in the form of Roland's TR-707 drum machine marches throughout the song almost unchanged and even sounds reminiscent of "Dig It's" unwielding march. (Although it's a little odd that at times Alan Nelsons rambling vocals sound a little too much like Ogre's psychobabble.)
Basically, if you're a fan of the "Back And Forth" series and the From The Vault series, "B.I.T.D." is a must have addition to your collection.
Whew, that's a lot of words for a little single, ah well.
5 stars, track it down, dig it up, and listen like theives.
Brap on. . .

Customer Reviews:
Was great two years ago, now it just good........2003-11-20
The berlin Project used to be a o.k. ska band and then the ska scene faded back into the underground. So to make a long story short, the Berlin Project changed their sound to a pop-punk, power pop style, and the change was for the better. Mixing pop punk guitars sounds with keys (keyboards.....or keytar) gave The Berlin project a rather unique sound. The vocals and the harmonies of the hooks are done extremely well and the dudes voice is wussy, but that's not a bad thing, it sounds cool.
all in all, Transition radio e.p. is good but it not great. Maybe if it wasn't an e.p. and it had more songs it would be great or maybe if I didn't listen to it so much it would be great, o' well. Recommanded for fans of Reggie and the Full effect, new found glory, and the hippos.
Nothing Special.......2003-02-10
I got this CD for free doing something at the Warped Tour show in Dallas in 2002, and it isn't bad. It also isn't good. It's mostly just forgettable. It sounds ok, but there's nothing that makes me want to keep listening to it.
