About the Artist
As front man of the high profile Montreal rock group "The Vendettas", as well as being a published poet and political activist, twenty-three year old singer-songwriter Paul Cargnello is already one of the leading figures in Montreal's artistic community.

Now, exploring his full musical potential, Cargnello steps away from the rock-reggae revolution of The Vendettas and launches his solo career with the release of his debut solo album "LIGHTWEIGHT ROMEO".

In this new artistic setting, he pushes his powerful lyricism, as well as his political activism, to the forefront. Cargnello also stays true to his eclectic background by blending folk, rock, blues, and reggae. A true Montrealer, he writes songs in both French and English to form a unique yet accessible sound. While it may be difficult to label him, Cargnello represents a new breed of songwriter, who can best be described as a "Punk Poet".

Paul is no stranger to pursuing other avenues to express himself. While the Vendettas rose in popularity in the late 90's and drew critical acclaim with their debut album, It's Happening to You, the band was but a fraction of Cargnello's artistic output. After publishing a collection of his poetry, entitled Driving in Reverse, in 1997, Cargnello continued to publish written works in journals such as Excite and Agent. From 1998 until 2001, Cargnello ran the New Socialist Climate, a political newsletter distributed in Montreal universities. His most recent publication is a poetry book entitled Old Hat, released this year.

In 2001, a solo career appeared imminent for Cargnello. He submitted the song Le Grand Chien for the French compilation "Two Tongue". Encouraged by positive feedback for the song, he now expands on it with the release of a full-length solo album. Whether it's with rock reggae, or folk punk, Paul Cargnello will continue to push the envelope musically and lyrically, bringing intelligent songwriting to the mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars Why Is Paul Not A Superstar?.......2004-02-11

I think I have an answer...Because he's too smart. He's too sensitive. And he's too left wing for the mainstream to handle. So let him be shunned, and ignored by the ignorant bourgeoisie. To the rest of us he's a gem in a wasteland of derivative stew called popular music.

5 out of 5 stars The Revolution Right Now.......2004-01-16

Paul Cargnello is no Lightweight. His album got little recognition but deserved much more. I picked up a copy of Lightweight Romeo last year and frankly, it blew me away. It's so hard to find politically aware artists these days, and Paul represents the new generation of revolutionaries. His music is intelligent but unpretentious, poignant but not obvious, Personal but not self indulgent, and most importantly... sensitive but not meek. He should be on your CD rack next to Billy Bragg, Paul Simon and Joe Strummer. This album doesn't miss a beat. I'll be sure pick up his next album.
