Modern, but not mired in nu metal or too-cute punk pop, the Exies' brand of raw, dark rock falls somewhere between Nirvana and early Goo Goo Dolls. The powerful, percussive "My Goddess" has a "Welcome to the Jungle" feel, while "Can't Relate"'s beautifully layered and conceived vocals and melody are oddly reminiscent of ELO. Ballads "Kickout" and the title track aren't as compelling as the headier, heavier entries, though "Creeper Kamikaze" has a soaring Beatles feel, as does "Genius." These Los Angeles musicians may wear their influences on their sleeves, but they wear them well. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
the exies - inertia (3 1/2 stars).......2005-10-03
I actually got into the exies via "head for the door", which IMO is a better record. I decided to pick up this record because I wanted to see how their sound had progressed. well, it's not really that big a change to tell the truth. most of the songs carry the familar vocals and melodies that made HFTD so good. however, the tone of this album is much more pop than that of "door", so that's the only reason I'm marking it 3 1/2 instead of 4 or 5. the songs are just too light-hearted, and the exies tend to work better with a post-grunge dark angle. highlight tracks would have to be "inertia" and "my goddess", but pretty much all are listenable.
on a side note, the album's production and mixing are nothing to write home about. some songs seem to come off louder than others, and the overall production is lacking in places. they could have given the album a cleaner, more polished sound, if you ask me.
overall, if you're new to the exies, get "head for the door" first, and if you like what you hear, get "inertia" later on.
Too soft.......2005-07-01
My goddess is the only song worth listening to on the entire album, the rest sounds like soft, slow garbage from SR-71's File 13. Get their new one instead, which is heavier and pure rock. Half of these songs border on pop-punk, and punk SUCKS!!!
An awesome CD!.......2005-06-08
This CD is pretty cool. These guys have unique sound by mixing that of other bands such as Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Goo Goo Dolls and combining it with a touch of synthesisers and New Metal...
In my opinion they're best songs however are the slower ones which they do a good job at..."Creeper Kamikazee", "Inertia" and "Evil Genius" are a pleasure to hear just to chillout. Their harder songs are also quite good "My Goddess, Without"
However they need to work on those songs in the middle...They need a little bit more of style to be pushed out of that pop feeling that we get these days. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy these songs...
GREAT CD OVERALL... A GOOD BUY
good but slow.......2005-03-24
this was an awesome cd! i recently got head for the door and i got this with it. (head for the door is a great cd as well) the first track, my goddess, was an great song and probably the best. the rest of the cd was definitely a little slower than i expected it to be though, but it was still great. it is definitely a buy!
Amazing.......2005-03-11
This Album is amazing... The Exies are one of the best bands I have heard in a long, long time. Listening to them now actually.

Listen to this excellent music!.......2006-02-20
What a great album from Derek Sherinian. Not only are there virtuoso chops throughout but he's also nailed some really great tunes. Drummer Simon Phillips is outstanding on this cd. Track 1 is an awesome song and sets the pace for the rest of this very high quality album. All you serious musicians should buy a copy of this cd and study it.
Style, virtuosity, and a great sense of atmosphere.......2002-10-04
What an album! Derek Sherinian shows off his various influences in this gem of an offering, from his cover of the Mingus jazz classic Goodbye Porkpie Hat and the Edgar Winter Group rock anthem Frankenstein, to the thunderous prog-tastic original Evel Knievel. The latter track, along with a few others features guest ex-Ozzy guitarist and legendary madman Zakk Wylde, with an over-the-top style that perfectly fits Sherinan's fiery fingering. All-star axe-man Steve Lukather covers the rest of the guitar duties and seems a perfect fit with Sherinian's more progressive and avant-garde pieces. In total, the album is saturated with the kind of technical brilliance, combined with atmospheric mastery that only Derek Sherinian can offer. I can't get this album out of my CD player. Sherinian rules the keys, with a style all his own, and his music rocks the world with every blinding run. A necessary addition to any true music-lover's collection.
The man with the most style in prog!.......2001-11-16
(...)
Highlights: Frankenstein, Mata Hari, and Goodbye Porkpie Hat.
Rating: 8.0 / 10.0
Another pet project for Derek Sherinian, the man with the most style in prog! The players on this album are: Derek(keys), Simon Phillips(drums), Jerry Goodman(violin), Tom Kennedy(bass), Zakk Wylde(guitar), Tony Franklin(bass), Steve Lukather(guitar), and Jimmy Johnson(bass).
Inertia: How could anyone mistake the sheer sound of Derek's keys!?! The melody is a nice combination of guitar and keys. Simon's drumming is solid and has a nice latin feel ala Al DiMeola. The key solos are exciting and disturbing at the same time, a common quality for DS. In typical Sherinian style, I can't confidently distinguish between keys, guitar or violin on certain parts. Good opening track.
Frankenstein: This is one of my favorite instrumentals done by one of my favorite artists (DS). The guitars done by ZW are very heavy! Derek does a great job on all the melody lines. Dig TF's awesome bass fills. This version is very true to the original with some added aggression and sounds. ZW's solo is fitting and not overplayed, a good example of playing within the context of the song. Great job by all players on this one.
Mata Hari: Fretless bass, catchy melody lines, atmospheric keys and groovy drums, this is everything I look for in an instrumental. This is a laid back track which gives everyone room to find their own place. This has to be some of the best playing I've heard of by SL. DS shows me a lot of maturity on this track, especially the solo, he never goes out of bounds. TF is impressive on the ending filling in the spaces provided by the repeated riff, bringing to song to a close.
Evel Knievel: This one is up-tempo and hard hitting just as its name would imply. ZW should calm down some with the artificial harmonics, yet he redeems himself with his burning solos. DS doesn't take a back seat to anyone as he blazes up and down with his solo.
La Pera Loca: I find this track to be very jazz / fusion based. The opening is pure jazz with piano, bass and drums. It then takes a whole new direction as it gets heavy in a neo-fusion style. This reminds of Mahavishnu Orchestra. The song then comes down while SL plays some tasteful leads; he doesn't seem to have any trouble playing any style of music. DS can solo like the greats of 70s fusion such as Jan Hammer, Chick Chorea or Joe Zawinal.
Goodbye Porkpie Hat: This is a Charles Mingus cover. This track has been done by such great artists as Jeff Beck and Andy Summers. I feel that this version could stand toe-to-toe with any of its predecessors. Very laid back and the jazz aspect is kept from SL melodies, DS Rhodes/keys, SP drumming and TK bass lines. THEN enters DS with his craziness. His sound is nothing you would ever hear on any jazz album, while SL plays off of this with some craziness of his own.
Astroglide: This song is what I expected to here, fast based drumming with unison melodies. The twist is the pairing of DS's and JG's violin as the instruments in sync. There is cool drum section at the 2min50s mark. This track sounds like it has bass but there is no player listed, therefore it must be keys. Nice job.
What a Shame: My favorite thing on this track is TF's fretless bass playing, he is able to break out of a background role and show he can add a new dimension to the music. Musically, this is the weakest track of the cd in my opinion. The clean parts just don't work with the heavy industrial riff sections. What A Shame.
Rhapsody Intro/Rhapsody in Black: The sound is much like DS work on his other solo album as well as Planet X. He is able to incorporate groove and technicality in a unique style. SP lives up to the challenge of playing some off-time lines like the seasoned veteran that he is. Catchy repeated guitar lines and keyboard work, which is broken up by the alternating solos of DS and SL. Even SP gets to show some of his skills on this one.
Note: At the end of the last track let it play until there is about 1 minute left and you'll here a small atmospheric passage which Derek does to end the cd. This piece was a fitting end to a cd that bears his name.
The ironic thing about this cd is the fact that all the players played well together and there was nobody who stood out among the crowd. This to me would represent a band album more so than a focus on Derek. I guess he is the backbone of the project and gets the credit. Overall a great group of musicians who played and a great cd.
Phenominal!.......2001-08-21
These guys are truly amazing! Simon Phillips is probably one of the very best drummers in rock. Great jazz/rock fusion stuff that is alive and kicking. Buy it!
Heavily influenced by Simon Phillips.......2001-05-05
After listening to the first riff of Track 1, it becomes immediately apparent that Simon Phillips has co-written most of the music, and also has co-produced, recorded, and mixed this CD. Actually, this 2nd solo CD by Dream Theater keyboarder Derek Sherinian sound much more like Phillips than like Sherinian's first CD, Planet X. While the latter was a wild and bold mix of fusion and metal, the new CD is written and played in more conventional fusion fashion. It's certainly more melodic than Planet X, but not as powerful and dissonant. Anyway, it's great music, so 5 stars are more than justified.

A Mess.......2006-08-25
There was huge potential in this project, but it's really not been realised.
They dogmatically attempt to reproduce notes and harmonies from the songs 'as is' rather than rework creatively to achieve an overall flow. Songs are also over-complicated rather than seeking a purity of sound and harmony. This really jars, as this is where Massive Attack excel. It also feels over-produced (trying to make up for poor composition?).
I was hoping for something intelligently re-worked to fit the instruments used, such as Christopher O'Riley did superbly with Radiohead. Instead, this seems to be cashing in on the name rather than getting to the heart of the music.
Nice, although it's not Massive's way..........2005-10-09
The intention is good, but it is clear that Massive Attack has not been involved in this project. They are all good covers of Massive Attack, but I miss their style in the songs...

Sweet Science.......2001-02-27
Way back, in my first year of high school, during a boring assembly in the auditorium, the monotony was suddenly broken by a rocked-up performance of a Christmas song ("Santa Claus is Coming To Town," if I remember correctly) by a young Paul Jago. Young girls swooned. Jago`s high falsetto voice became embossed in my brain. Not long after, Jago`s band, the Gandharvas, released this album, and with a little help from Muchmusic (Canada`s MTV), they garnered a little fame. As a live act, they were unmatched by their canuck contemporaries. Soap Bubble is experimental and quirky, and a very impressive first outing. Their potential wasn`t fully realized until their next album, Kicking in the Water, but this one is stunning nonetheless. Most songs are infectious from the get-go, and the psychotropic title track still remains, years later, a frequently-spun staple in my stereo. Sadly, the Gandharvas are now defunct, but this album remains a telling legacy to the rare treasure that the band was.
Unique.......2000-08-08
The gandharvas are truly a unique band. Many people claim that bands have a sound that is different from anyone else, but the gandharvas never sound the same as THEMSELVES from album to album or even song to song. If you are Canadian, chances are you've heard "The First Day of Spring" but it is not at all indicative of what this album sounds like. It's really hard to explain or compare their music, so I have to just say go out and buy their albums. If they are no more or not, I am not sure. I have heard rumors both ways, but regardless they are a great band that more people should have taken notice to. In my personal opinion their second album, "Kicking in the Water" is the best of their three, but this, the debut album, is great as well. Check them out!

Customer Reviews:
WHY IS "BUBBLE LOVE" NOT ON THIS DISC?!?!?!?!!.......2004-10-08
This group won me over with the track "Bubble Love"--needless to say, once I heard about their album "We Travel Fast" I had to have it! WHAT AN AMAZING DISCOVERY!!! With stunning and hypnotic vocals from Jessie Banks leading these 11 beautiful songs (12 if you were able to get the bonus track version of this release), Chungking has created some timeless tracks reminsicent of some 60s soundtrack. This is positively excellent music, nothing too overpowering or too melanchonic, just good ole fashioned music that will appeal to fans of Goldfrapp, Anjali, Halou, Hooverphonic and those of their ilk. Jessie's lyrics make sense (no interpretations needed) and you can actually understand what she's crooning, even when she's doing it as a "man"! Check out "Let the Love In" and "Full On" and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'd be foolish to say I have a favorite song on this one because they all are incredible! The only complaint I do have is where the hell is "Bubble Love"???????????
We love you, Jessie........2004-02-06
The first thing that grabbed me when I heard this album playing in a CD shop was the distinct style and quality of the vocals. Sounding (somehow) like a singer from the 1950's or 60's, but with an entirely modern feel, Jessie Banks's voice possesses a smouldering sensuality, rare warmth and charisma, and a lazy, laid-back delivery that frequently makes this listener go weak at the knees.
With multi-tracked harmonies she wallows and swoops all over the songs, sometimes subdued, sometimes with gay abandon, but always - and I mean ALWAYS - in total control of that voice.
Of course, a singer alone is nothing without a good song to sing, and Chungking have really delivered the goods here. Musically, I'd describe Chungking's music as: 50% Pop, 15% trip hop, 15% indie, 10% soul and 10%... something new and indefinable. It is simultaneously off-the-wall and accessible; mainstream yet avant-garde, familiar yet somehow brand new.
It's basically pop music with a few twists and a dark edge. There are moments when you could be listening to any current, girl-fronted pop band (The Cardigans, for example), but just when you think you've got a handle on things, the deft musical craftsmanship and top-drawer song-writing take matters in hand and throw a curve ball at you, and suddenly mainstream pop turns into something entirely weird (though in no way unpleasant). There are 3 songs towards the end of the album where the band (and producer) have really pushed the boat out and allowed experimentalism to take over, where even Jessie's delicious voice is electronically treated and dropped in pitch, allowing her to croon as a `man' singing about `pretty ladies', very reminiscent of Prince in the late eighties, which is no mean feat.
Altogether, We Travel Fast is an album not to be missed. I bought it having only heard one song, and the album captivated me entirely. It's truly superb, and easily the best thing to happen in the music world during 2003.
Sumptuous...........2003-12-22
Where did Chungking come from?
I have NO idea at all...
I was in a cd store, heard a track playing and asked the counter guy who it was. He guaranteed the album trax were of a similar quality - and he wasn't wrong.
One of my finds for 2003!
You know when you discover great music, you want to let everyone know.
Chilled, stunning vocals, and eclectic in parts.
I cant compare them to anyone, but perhaps Goldfrapps Felt Mountain is a good guideline, or even Morcheeba.
NB: This album has just been re-released in the Uk, but strangely has been renamed as 'The Hungry Years', completely repackaged (for the better), and replaced 2 tracks with 2 new ones. The new version is more polished, but don't be fooled into thinking its a new album.
Following.......2003-12-05
I first heard this song on the season finale of "Nip/Tuck". I had watched it almost 3 times before I really started to like the lyrics and finally wrote them down and Googled them that night. Low and behold, I came across this great trio. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this CD. It was on backorder, so I kept listening to the songs from their website. When I finally got it, I couldn't stop listening to it. There are many great songs, but this is one CD I can play the whole way through. But of course, my favorite song is Following. The lyrics are very profound and melodic. A++!
