Description
Tamia is one of the world's most loved R&B singers with a career highlighted by two certified gold albums, has arrived with her a new studio album and fourth release featuring a mixture of club tracks, duets and mainstream R&B songs produced by proven hitmakers Rodney Jerkins and Shep Crawford. Four time Grammy Nominee and Winner of the Best Vocal Performance Award, Tamia's long awaited follow-up to her hit record More finds the sultry, sophisticated singer at both a creative and personal apex. The 15-song disc, Between Friends, sizzles with her trademark sensuality, but it is also buoyed by a sparkling personality that her fans don't always get to see. Like her past efforts, the disc is anchored by stunning vocal displays that rival this generation's greatest voices. The album features the hit track "Can't Get Enough" which is one of the most highly anticipated songs from one of radio's favorite artists.
Customer Reviews:
This album is excellent.......2007-07-06
Go on Tamia! This album is so good. I can drive to it, exercise to it, relax to it, and sleep to it! I am truly inspired by Tamia and have been a fan of hers since forever. She sings like a bird, her voice is beautiful! My favorite songs are ME (love the video & the message), ALMOST, PROTECT MY HEART, LAST FIRST KISS, SITTIN ON THE JOB, CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOU...I could go on and on. Excellent job Tamia, I can't wait to see what the next album will be like. I am your fan!
Tamia is one of the most under rated female R&B singers.......2007-06-19
It was May when I heard a cut from Between Friends, 6 months after the CD was released. Tamia has on of the most distincitve voices on the scene and she is often slept on and gone unnoticed. She is a force to be reckoned with.
Tamia is the truth.......2007-06-07
Tamia is a rare artist who is talented and can more than carry a note. Between friends has everything you could ever want in a cd. For example this album has the club banger (Too Grown For That), the slow jams (Can't Get Enough Of You & Last First Kiss) and a powerful track (Me). Tamia does a great job of bring the songs to life and she sounds great over any beat. This album will definitely stay in your rotation!!!
MY TOP FIVE
1. The Way I Love You
2. Can't Get Enough Of You
3. Almost
4. Happy
5. Become Us
Hats off to a Job well done!.......2007-06-05
I became a big fan of Tamia's when I was in college with the second Cd A NU Day and since then that chic has been blowing me away. I heard the African release of Between Friends before it was released in the US and was blown away. She is one of the most under-rated singers in the industry. In a world of none singing little kids she provides a breath of fresh air. "Me" can easily rival "Stranger in my House". Become Us" and "To Grown for That" are crazy up-tempo tracks. I instantly gravitated to "Almost" the minute I heard it! I've never heard that concept before. Last First Kiss says it all again this introduced another concept in a world of tasteless unoriginal R&B. "Sitting on the Job" is another one of my favorites. I'm really happy she changed this into a full song.
If you don't have this in your collection then you are truly missing a gem. HATS OFF TO TAMIA!
Great Album!.......2007-05-17
Imazing voice and beatiful caribean melodies, love this album, so far I had bought each one of her albums but this one is absolutly the best.

It began almost as a lark when Carlos Santana encountered his longtime friend and hero Wayne Shorter on the concert trail in Atlanta, GA, in 1987. Carlos said, "Let's start a rumor that we're putting a band together."Wayne's eyes got bigger and brighter as he smiled and then responded: "Yeah, Carlos, let's start a rumor."
A few months later the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Band performed its debut concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco, the beginning of a 26-concert tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. The performance of this magnificent band was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, on July 14, 1988, and includes interviews with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and festival creator Claude Nobs.

Jaap, Zoetermeer, The Netherlands.......2007-07-06
I already have several Santana CD's and I love his particular sound.
I do appreciate jazz and fusion music a lot and also rock music.
This combination with Wayne Shorter is in my opinion a masterpiece and a must-have for Santana fans who also enjoy Jazz muzic. GREAT LIVE PERFORMANCE in good quality recording!
Doesn't work that well, but who cares?.......2007-06-29
I don't.
I've been longing to hear Carlos Santana in an all instrumental setting, sans the cloying vocals, for years. And he delivers, along with his altogether remarkable band, big time.
This is probably the worst I've ever heard Wayne Shorter. He just doesn't seem to be on board with the vibe. Consequently, his playing comes across as tentative, groping, unfocused. Plus, he's very poorly recorded--too far back in the mix and improperly mic'd. It doesn't even matter that Santana is half the musician Shorter is. This is his gig, and he nails it. Patrice Rushen (keyboards) ain't half bad either. Same for Alphonso Johnson (bass) and Leon Ndugu Chancler (drums). These dudes can play.
If you were hoping for a stellar Shorter performance (as I was) you're going to be disappointed (e.g., his lame theme from Star Wars quote on "Shh," strangely reprised and nearly beat to death on "Elegant People," coupled with his generally phlegmatic/pedestrian playing throughout). My advice? Get over it, and just sit back and enjoy some very smart live jazz/fusion instrumental music that always beguiles and sometimes mesmerizes.
****1/2.
Dream Band: Santana and Shorter.......2007-05-18
For those of you who missed this short tour, this is a great performance of a an allstart dream band. Carlos and Wayne fill the Montreux skies with soaring sounds with great chemistry and energy. Patrice Rushen is no slouch as a great instrumentalist in her own right. Unfortunately, Alphonso's bass solo did not make the cut on this dvd\cd. Percussion is the backbone of all Carlos' bands and they mesh like a glove. Of all of their concert tours since the mid 70's, this is my favorite due to the once in a lifetime get together and a very creative period for this band. Thank You Carlos and Wayne for releasing this. Thanks
What Can I say?.......2007-05-13
What can I say about this album? Really, not much more than what has already been said about the guitar master himself, Carlos Santana. Carlos Santana is superb on everything he does and this CD is no exception. You can hear the pride he takes in his music and himself while listening to this CD. Carlos Santana is the best guitar player, whether it's rock, ballads, jazz, latino, or whatever it is, to come out of the late 60s and still going strong today. This is definately a must album for anyone. If you like rock, latino, and jazz music all in one, this is a perfect album to have.
A disappointment.......2007-04-29
It would seem to be a match made in heaven but it was not to be. These are 2 of my favorite musicians but it really doesn't work.It appears to be Santanas band and Shorter doesn't fit. In his solos he tries too hard to be exciting and the recording engineer does not have him out front, he is overpowered by the electronics and percussion. A JAZZ TIMES review said it shouldn't have come out of the vault but that is abit harsh. If you like Santana you will like this. If you want great Shorter, forget it. And it is not really his fault.

Who can fault an artist who so clearly embraces a one-planet, one-people worldview? Someone who recruits guest instrumentalists from every hemisphere to underscore his fondness for multiculturalism and convey his wish for global harmony? You can't help but admire Yanni, the Greek keyboardist/composer, even while acknowledging such nobility does not always translate into deeply satisfying music. On this, the audio-only component of his third made-for-television concert production (filmed in 2005 in Las Vegas), Yanni continues in his adopted role of True Egalitarian, playing a few bars to open a piece, then fading into the background to let other musicians (on violin, trumpet, sax, didgeridoo, hammer dulcimer, even keyboards) command the music's flow. A lovely gesture, but one that often results in extended soloing that sidetracks, even derails, the focus of the music. (Consider "Playtime," where Ming Freeman plays the jazzy piano solo, and the disc's previously unreleased track, "The Storm," pairing violinists Samvel Yervinyan and Sayaka Katsuki in a showy duet that is reminiscent of something from Bond.) Thus while the musicianship is first-rate, the production is superb, and some tracks are terrific (too bad "Standing in Motion" fades out so quickly), this disc is more about the jamming and less about staying on compositional task. Likely this project will be better appreciated in its DVD version, where the staging and artist interaction is on display. Meanwhile, some longtime fans may be left yearning for a day when Yanni will step up to his keyboards, drop the hammer, and let his own muse rock. --Terry Wood

Sounds A Bit Like M E H D I.......2007-07-06
Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.
ALSO RECOMMENDED: M E H D I ~ Instrumental Paradise Volume 8..A True Gem.
His best yet!.......2007-05-23
I saw this concert live and couldn't wait to order the DVD. It's truly a global music event - paraguayan harp, digeridoo, fantastic violinist "duels" - each musician an exceptional talent. Together they are fireworks!
Yanni in Concert.......2007-05-15
I bought the CD and DVD - the CD is great, but the DVD in fantastic - this concert is beyond your wildest dreams - just crank up the volume and enjoy. No drugs required - just get a nigh on this great condert.
Simply The BEST!.......2007-05-14
I've always been a fan of Yanni, & I though I ordered the last album, which is different than the Live Concert.
When I checked Yanni's Website, I knew I ordered the wrong CD (Live Concert)
But I never regretted it, I don't know how could I have not hear it.
I've been playing the CD in my car for more than a month continuously. I cannot stop listening to it!
If you like new age & specially Yanni, You SHOULD get this CD!
Extremely recommended.

EXCELENT LIVE CD.......2007-05-07
I SAW THEM PERFORM THIS CONCERT & THEY WERE BRILLIANT IT WAS THIER FIRST CONCERT WITHOUT RAY THOMAS THE ORCHESTRA & THEY SOUNDED FANTASTIC IF YOURE A MOODY BLUES FAN OR NOT THIS CD & DVD IS WORTH BUYING.
good but not the same with ray thomas.......2007-05-02
this dvd was a lengthy concert with many songs played, particularly when compared with live at prince albert hall, but i thought the musical arrangement was lacking. The quality of the music was not clear enough, and without the benefit of a whole orchestra behind them, this dvd lacked pizazz i thought. Also, I thought the singers voices were a bit horse, and they seemed a little like they were going through the motions at times. Norda Mullen the new floutist to substitute for retired bandmember ray thomas gave it her all, but all the band members were in casual wear but she was wearing this evening gown which just seemed so out of place as she jumped around on the stage with the flute or tamborine in a strapless black gown with high heels. Just didnt fit in. but it didnt impact the quality of the music she was responsible for.
Somewhat cheesy but very entertaining and enjoyable.......2007-02-04
I have been a Moody Blues fan since forever, and have seen them in concert a number of times over the years. When I saw this, my first reaction was "what? yet another live album"? The twist this time is that this is just the band, sans symphony orchestra, and thus the first live album of just the band since 1969's "Moody Blues Live + 5".
"Lovely To See You" (2 CDs, 20 tracks, 105 min.) is in essence a greatest hits live album, and that of course is what the fans want. All the classics are here. CD1 (9 tracks, 43 min.) is not bad, with tracks like "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Voice" and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere". But CD2 (11 tracks, 61 min.) is so much stronger, starting off with a cover of Jeff Lynne's "Forever Autumn" (from the "War of the Worlds" album), a rocking "Your Wildest Dreams", "Higher and Higher" (with drummer Graeme Edge singing lead vocals on his own composition), and then of course the last 4 songs, which define what the Moody Blues have become: "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock & Roll Band)", "Nights in White Satin", "Question" and the closer "Ride my See-Saw". Just irresistible.
One of the reviewers here complains about the sound quality on this album and that the Moody Blues sound like a "garage band". Has that person listened to the same album as I have? The sound is lush and pristine throughout the album. Does the band break new ground with this release? Of course not, but that isn't the point. This album may be a bit cheesy, but who cares. It is entertaining and enjoyable from start to finish.
Far from their best.......2007-01-16
The Moody Blues are one of the best bands to grace the charts in ---well, forever, but this cd doesn't showcase that quality. The sound is awful! There are times when the drums jarringly drown out the vocals. I didn't think it possible for the Moodies to sound like a garage band, but there are moments on this cd when that is the case. Pass on this one and go for Anthology instead. It is a far superior cd.
Lovely to See You Rocks.......2006-12-14
Best live performance in years. I always said I wanted to see Justin sing in a 200 seat hall. This is close. If Forever Autumn dosen't bring tears to your eyes you have missed one of the great vocal performances in rock. Production is excellent. It was the first DVD I watched on my new Sony HDMI upconvert player. The picture and DTS sound are flawless.

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A more tolerable commute.......2007-05-27
Ron White is hilarious; a great story teller. I commute in miserable traffic to Wash., DC and I need safe distractions. This is safe until I start cracking up. I can also listen to the cd a few times in a row and it just doesn't get old. If you appreciate "good old boy" humor, this one's for you. Very, very funny.
Very funny.......2007-01-11
I love Ron White so obviously I would rate his CD high. It's great to listen to with friends or on a long car ride. Definitely not something you want children listening to because of the language and content.
You Can't Fix Stupid.......2007-01-10
Ron White is always good, but this one stands out as an example of his sharp mind and cutting wit.
Yes you can!!.......2006-11-20
You can fix it, stupid!! Stop drinking and smoking for one!! This proves that Hillbillies will laugh at anything. Listen to SMART comedy, peo-ple! Like Woody or baron Cohen!!
Almost pornographic.......2006-08-14
I am a huge Ron White fan, so I hate to give it a low score - but this CD just seemed to me like he sunk to a new level. Almost every track on this CD is a crotch joke and/or relates to sex, and where I am definately not a prud - I felt a little sleazy for listening to it. I was very disappointed. I highly recommend his previous CD "Drunk In Public" instead.

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06
Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.
One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06
One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.
Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26
I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.
This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

The First Reaction from John Lydon after the Demise of the Sex Pistols. He Teamed Up with Keith Levene, Martyn Atkins and Jah Wobble for What was a Bold Statement at the Time. Lydon was the Familiar Character, but Instead of Heading a Punk Outfit, Here He was Fronting this Dark, Brooding Experimental and Somewhat Obtuse Gang who Broke New Ground for the Postpunk Movement. 'first Issue' Stands as a Document of a Time When Diy Ruled and Music was a Free for All.

Got to be a die hard fan to listen to this!.......2006-09-01
Listen, on the surface this pretty much stinks.
Sex Pistols was rock music. This is noisy, in your face, purposefully abrasive.
However, at the time, it was definitely ground breaking. The guitar playing was avante garde/Sonic Youth before that type of music came into vogue. The bass playing was also innovative.
"Public Image" is a decent song, "Anastasia" is all right, the rest of the album is headache inducing.
The band reached its zenith on 2nd Edition with the cool dub sounds and screaching guitar.
In real life, John Lydon is a jerky and abrasive person. This record was not only to isolate himself from the pistols but, it was also giving a middle finger to the public.
I saw him live circa 1979. He was terrible, performed behind a screen, and never acknowledged the audience.
I do not think that this album was a serious artistic endeavor.
Pistol Image.......2006-03-13
I love this album and i love P.I.L, but you people dont understand the greatness of the Sex pistols, a lot of u just want to say you hate the Pistols because you want to be artsy and have a Image of yourself, and I'm saying that as an artist.
The Sex Pistols broke down the walls, and PIL walked through it.
Great first album.......2005-11-22
According to Lydon most of the songs on this album were meant to be recorded by the Sex Pistols, but the other members, along with McClaren, thought the songs were too controversial. Ironic,eh?
My personal favorites are Public Image,Religion 1&2,and Annalisa. Religion 1&2 in particular are brilliant because of the stand that Lydon takes against the Catholic Church.Lydon grew up in a Catholic family and you can really feel his anger towards the church in the lyrics.
PiL were one of the best post punk bands in the 1980's and they have been sorely overlooked by people lately. I feel that they are just as important as Joy Division,in the sense that PiL influenced a ton of other bands. For me, they opened my eyes to a bunch of different styles of music from punk to funk. This is a great album by a great band.
Entertaining but repetitive..........2005-03-03
Most of the songs on this album are entertaining. They have catchy hooks, a cool sound, and Johnny "Rotten" Lydon's distinctive sneering vocals. However, there are a few major problems.
For the first part, they're all basically the same song. They're pretty much all just an excessively loud brick wall of sound, which might have been interesting for a few songs, but is just repetitive and draining after a while.
Also, the songs are stretched out way too long. These could make great three minute or so songs, and than maybe PiL could put on more than eight tracks. But no. They had to stretch them into five minute long ballads that sound like they could very well just be on a loop. There is almost no variation between verse and chorus, and the volume of the music stays basically the same throughout the whole record: unnecessarily loud. This is of course with the exception of one song, "Religion", which is basically a great, big, anti-Catholic rant and a perfect example of good ol' Johnny taking himself a wee bit too seriously. To be quite frank, the whole rant reminded me of poetry that might have been written by Rick on the television show "The Young Ones". And then of course is "Religion II", which is the same song as "Religion" except with instruments in the background. Good try Johnny, but no dice. Shoulda stuck with "God Save the Queen".
NO WAY !!!.......2005-02-22
I wrote this review only because I saw so many bad reviews of it I could'nt believe my eyes !!! How can anybody give this album less than 5 stars is beyond my wit !!! This is the sh..t !!! And the Holy Grail of after punk albums !!!!! It's weird and powerful,it was my introduction to after punk, and a deluxe one,I may add.Together with ALBUM,this is the best after punk album of all times.I LOVE THIS STUFF.

No classic, but worth hearing.......2006-06-29
Blues Image was a short-lived band from Florida that unsuccessfully attempted to relocate in LA later than the peak time to do so (which was 1965-1967). The group only produced one hit song, "Ride Captain Ride," because the label insisted on a marketable single. It's great, and it's on this album. However, the rest of the album shows the group imploded for a reason: the members had no clear direction, and so went in several to little effect. Even so, the album is an interesting period piece for those who care. And a CD copy of "Ride Captain Ride" improves any pop music collection.
Fantastic Album!.......2006-03-11
"Open" is the best of the Blue Image's three albums. It combines latin rhythm with bluesy rock and comes up with a unique sound. Their big hit "Ride Captain Ride" is a good song but really isn't representative of the music on this album. Anyway, I'm glad to see this great album made it to CD. The sound is great and there are some nice liner notes to boot!
I love this album!.......2005-12-31
I got this LP back in the early 70's. I saw it cheap in a cut-out bin and got it since I liked "Ride Captain Ride" a lot. It turns out that "Ride Captain Ride" isn't really very representative of the album; the album is mostly good bluesy rock, and "Ride Captain Ride" actually doesn't fit that well with the rest of it. It turned out to be one of my all-time favorite albums -- not for "Ride Captain Ride", but for the other stuff. I'm really glad it's finally out on CD!
Blues Image - 'Open' (Sundazed).......2005-10-19
Originally released in 1970 as 'Open' was the band's second of reportedly three lp's they'd put out. Most of you probably won't remember much of this reissue outside of their huge hit they had with "Ride Captain Ride",which is always nice to hear.I'm hearing this entire lp for the very first time.'Open' is basically good bluesy hard rock, very 1970-ish.Other notable tracks include "Love Is The Answer","Clean Love",the fusion like "La Bamba" and "Pay My Dues".Line-up:Mike Pinera-guitar&vocals,Malcolm Jones-bass,Skip Konte-keyboards,Joe Lala-drums and Manuel Bertematti-percussion.Anyone know what Mike Pinera is up to these days?Last I saw him,he was guitarist for Alice Cooper on his summer 'Clones' tour, but that's been awhile now.Might appeal to fans of Three Dog Night,Sugarloaf,Guess Who and Iron Butterfly.
Mike Pinera, the voice behind Iron Butterfly (second period) and Ramatam.......2005-09-05
I did not know that Mike Pinera was in this particular group, or at least I forgot.
This second album is extremly good, reminding me of the Iron Butterfly's albums (i.e. Metamorphosis) in which the same guitarist/singer was playing, a little later in the seventies.
Excellent stuff. Great voice.

On his third, but first nationally distributed CD, blues-soul-jazzman Smith explores the emotional and sonic landscape of romantic failure with affecting results. Wedding big doses of urban angst to warm melodies, hooky choruses, and disarmingly wistful lyrics, he proves the perfect wallow partner for insomniacs and the recently rejected. But with a bonus: His open-hearted stanzas conjure black angels, a menstruating Virgin Mary, and the reluctant release from earthly things, suggesting if not a nobility through suffering, a spiritual journey through struggle. ("A damaged soul will never stay too long.") Smith makes the most of his modest vocal gifts, singing in a white-boy-wishing-he-were-black tenor, sometimes calling to mind early Steve Winwood ("Killing Time") or Van Morrison circa "Brown Eyed Girl" ("Everything Is New"). He's so charmingly pensive that listeners will pray he gets the girl before record's end, knowing instead he'll trace the cautious bliss of infatuation ("Stay Awhile") to the inevitable numbness of parting ("My Morning Scene"). Guests Garth Hudson, Bill Frisell, and Carrie Rodriguez add texture, color, and consolation. --Alanna Nash

Cool Blue Breeze.......2007-03-16
Heard 'My Morning Scene' on a local indie radio station (it's too good for Clear Channel). As it was not identified, spent several days tracking down artist to find this wonderful album. The aforementioned song reminded me of The Band and brilliant songwriter Malcolm Holcombe - and I got a major kick out of finding Garth Hudson playing on a song and Jonah covering Malcolm's 'Dressed In White'. The CD is an understated joy - wrapped in moody melodicism and thoughtful lyrics. Jonah's voice has real character (despite the lame description by the Amazon reviewer) and his emotional commitment to the songs is palpable.
My only small quibble (and reason for 4 starts) is the sameness of many of the tunes and that the production is flat - plodding, where it needs to push.
That aside, this is a rare gem in a sea of sound-alikes.
Get it.......2007-03-12
While going to see Susan Tedeschi in concert last fall, we were treated to an opening act that we had never heard of. The sound that Jonah Smith put out immediately grabbed our attention (we usually don't pay a great deal of attention to opening acts), and we immediately went to meet him and get some CD's. I bought 3 copies, gave two away and kept one that Jonah autographed for me. Upon listening to the CD, I was highly impressed that the sound that captivated us from the life performance was captured on the CD. The sound is very soulful, with definate influences from The Band and Van Morrison.
As for the CD, this is solid from cover to cover. There is not a single track on this disk that I don't like (which I can rarely say for ANY CD), and the disc keeps finding its way back into my CD player.

Smooth Rootsy Soul.......2006-07-14
This is an album that seems to get better with every play. Definitely better than his first two albums (although they are definitely worth picking up), more polished and tighter musicianship. The songs range from heavy soul to a more americana rootsy vibe. Dont dismiss this at first listen, Jonah has a unique sounding voice that trust me... grows on you with each listen. Well written songs and great music!! Something thats increasingly rare these days. Excellent album, lets hope he gets solid backing so he can make some more!!
Soul.......2006-07-04
Tasteful, rootsy and endlessly soulful, Jonah's third album ranges from vintage, pedal steel-laced Americana to classic, Rhodes-drenched, blue-eyed soul.
on a different note, another reviewer stated that this was his first album. WRONG. this is his third album. Industry Rule (2001) and Beneath the Underdog (2003) are both good albums, but not as good as this one. if you dig this album, try to pick up the other two. jonah just signed with relix records , so you could probly get the other two at their website
