Customer Reviews:
This album is great! Truly distinctive............2007-05-17
I remember my introduction to the music of Swedish band, The Cardigans. I can tell you the time and place. I was a freshman in high school, and my class took a trip to the movie theater to see a screening of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET. Their hit song, "Lovefool" was blaring while Juliet (Claire Danes) is preparing to see her lover, Romeo (Leonardo Dicaprio) in secret. I thought the song's infectious melody and cute vocals, from their female lead singer was so catchy! Also, the lyrics were border-line masochistic. They alluded to the foolishness that some women knowingly buy into in relationships, just to keep their partners, regardless of what damage they are being subjected to. I had to buy the cassette and see if this song was really "the peak" for these Swedish rockers, or if they were merely one hit wonders.
I am happy to tell you that these Swedes definitely lived up to my hopes, and I found their music interchangably upbeat and unsettling. The Cardigans is best described as conflicted rock music. They deliver punchy lyrics, set to a combination of percussive, bouncy accompaniment and dark, more slow and (even) demented background music. In fact, some of their songs almost sound like outtakes from younger versions of the S&M inspired band, The Velvet Underground. "Your New Cuckoo," "Been It," and "Losers" are three examples of their unabashedly honest songs, along with "Lovefool." Though, I had limited exposure and knowledge of sado-masochistic relationships, I had enough knowledge to understand what they were alluding to. Dark as the subject matter was, I appreciated it and still do today.
Submission.......2007-01-03
The theme of this album could be described in one word: submission. The submissiveness shown in relationships both positive and negative, and both are explored thoroughly here.
Highlights:
Your New Cuckoo is about discovery of your partner's infidelity. And not just the infidelity of the loins, but of the heart, which is the most destructive form of infidelity.
Been It has grown up lyrics like "I was your mother, I was your father, I was your sister, your mistress, maybe I was your who/re. Who could ask for more." But it gets too repetitive.
Heartbreaker is a song about a hook/er. "I'll please you for free." "Tell me I'm good, but I know I am bad." "Don't do that, don't use that bat"? There's a looming fear on this track that creeps into the next one.
Happy Meal II.
I assume there's a Happy Meal I somewhere, right? One of my favorites from the record, but is this really a happy song about an anticipated rendezvous? It seems to me her near obsessed preoccupation with wanting everything to be perfect shows an undercurrent of abuse? Fear? Doom? Maybe a man with serious anger problems who likes to beat his girl if her books aren't arranged in order, or her made up stories aren't amusing. "Shape up my face, eager for the meeting." Maybe she needs to shape up her face to hide that black eye he gave her the night before. Happy Meal just doesn't come off as romantic. Per/verse is more like it.
Never Recover
I really like this song. It's breezy and infectious.
Lovefool is a poppy song that sticks out on this record. Another song about submission: willing a guy to be with you despite his lack of love and concern. While the song has serious lyrics of desperation, no one could deny with a straight face that any pop act that all the "sophisticated music lovers on their high horses" hate could have made this record. I can see Britney Spears singing it right now. Especially considering Brit and Nina have similar-sounding voices.
Losers
My third favorite after Lovefool and Happy Meal.
Iron Man
I really like this light interpretation of the Heavy Metal classic.
Bottom Line: I'm still not totally convinced The Cardigans are a band I could really love the way I do the other female-led band No Doubt. There is a mystery and darkness that shrouds The Cardigans, and if not for Lovefool, I still wouldn't know who they were. I'm in no hurry to buy anything else from them, but this record is very solid and creative.
happy 10th anniversary.......2006-11-29
10 years later the cardigans and Nina are still beautiful. This band is up there with Pixies/breeders flaming lips and Nirvana. These bands have been really the only what I call innovators borderline genius. I will feel more creativity/emotion in a cardigans cd then Madonna or Mariah Carey all though Mariah I think stayed as long as she did because of her voice I don't really like her music that much. But this album and Alanis one good record was the changing point out of grunge. Although in 1995 music was already changing to where we are today. There is no more genres. Except now everyone wants to make a cd and record companies are totally out of touch. They sign unartists Lohan/Hilton/underwood/clarkson/daughter of ozzy/lisa marie presley/sean lennon/trump next. what do these people have in common. Im not going to say anything. It's not art it's manufactured so they feel they are a artist...WRONG. I believe 80 percent what gets released every week by a lot of these big labels is pure trash. They are really not making money they are supplying more marketing and advertising for what is currently popular in trends. So there is the one genre that really isn't.
Flawless CD........2006-06-10
This is really good music. The Bass player is a master. What strikes me about this group and especially this album is the extremely heavy base (like the Peppers) contrasted with the soft beautiful voice of the lead singer. If you want to hear good music this is it. I do much of my writing listening to this CD.
Do you believe in the after-LIFE?.......2006-02-10
The Cardigans had me at Carnival...and continued to hold my interest with "First band on the moon". This album is somewhat of the same formula that made LIFE such a great album. Nina's voice is still syrupy-sweet..and the music is very imaginative and catchy...but you could hear the beginnings of the changes of the Cardigans music, the "growing-up" phase that most bands go through, which leads to darker lyrics and music...and if you are a fan of their first album, it can be a little dissapointing. But all in all, this album is very listenable and is a good addition to the Cardigans catalog..."New Cuckoo" stands out as the best track on the album, with all the rest of the music as good as they should be.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.
A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Album Description
A truly unclassifiable artist, Sigmund SNOPEK III was relatively anonymous among the popular band THE VIOLENT FEMMES. The art of this iconoclast can eventually be related to that of THE MOODY BLUES and Kevin GODLEY & Lol CREME. An obscure album issued in 1972, the now famous "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" was full of ambition: its heteroclite Progressive rock taking after some of the early Frank ZAPPA, rock, classical or contemporary music, ethnic music and jazz, all in an audacious blend. On "Nobody To Dream" (1975), he blends refined neo-classical tracks, classic-pop orchestrated songs, pop-songs, elegant and airy melodies. "Thinking Out Loud" (1997) includes five added tracks, compared with the original 1978 version. Two years later, the fabulous "First Band On The Moon" could be heard as a true Snopekian manifesto ! "Roy Rodgers Meets Albert Einstein" is an excellent 1982 millesime, characterized by a division in three works ("Ride In The Dark", "Roy Rodgers Meets Albert Einstein" & "Song Sing The Doldrum Ding") all more staggering the one than the other. The event of the year 2000 "Trinity - Seas Seize Sees" shows the return of the US keyboard player with Polish origin. Issued on the Musea label, this ambitious and conceptual double album was completely composed in 1973. However, only the first part was recorded in those days, the rest was completed between 1996 and 1999 and the whole work includes an impressing quantity of musicians. On it, all the characteristics of his first albums can be found with on top of that some sequences that sound almost like MAGMA.

Sigmund Snopek III - 'First Band On The Moon' (Musea).......2005-02-14
'First Band...' as it turns out,is actually a reissue of Snopek's obscure 1977 lp.Can you beat that?I've heard OF his name before, but I was never aware of who he was.The Milwaukee native has apparently been in the business for thirty-plus years now. He's been noted for being a friend and touring member of the Violent Femmes in the '90's.Snopek is mainly a keyboardist, but he's also known to be a versatile musician as well as performer. There's no way I can even classify his music on 'First Band...' other than I will say it gets better with each play.A couple of the most inspiring tracks are "Dr.Alles","Highway Ghosts" and the melodic "Let's Take A Trip".Line-up:Snopek-keyboards,flute&vocals,B.Wiemann III-guitar&vocals,Jim Gordon-bass and Mike Lucas-drums.A unique experience to be had here, that's for sure.

Excellent CD, but not worth 30+ bucks.......2001-04-20
"First Band on the Moon" is an excellent CD, but you are basically paying 17 extra bucks for 2 songs ("Country Hell" and "Blah Blah Blah"). Both songs are mediocre at best and can be found on the b-side collection "Other Side of the Moon".

Customer Reviews:
'Swonderful and Fascinatin'.......2001-09-24
A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!
