Different, punky, happy, and fun.......2005-10-20
Don't buy this album expecting to hear the clear guitar hooks of "Tin Pan Alley" or the goofy and nasal voices of "Go" and "The Bird that You Can't See."
But do buy this album.
This is The Apples in Stereo as a power-pop-punk outfit with countless catchy hooks, happy lyrics, but with everything swirling in a churning wave of fuzz and distortion. Fun and fast punk guitar, a great mix of various male and female vocals, the feels of 1950s radio ditties and 1960s surf rags and 1970s punk and 1990s crunch.... It's all here, and you will enjoy it, whether you're an Apples in Stereo fan or whether you've never heard them before but just like to rock out and feel good. Check it out.
Man, This Sucks..........2004-04-18
Dude, what is this man? It's like, all happy and stuff. That's crap man. I'll admit, these guys used to kinda catchy, but now they sound like the Beach Boys molested by the Jesus And Mary Chains' Psychocandy. I mean, those guitars! They don't even do anything except play some chords again and again. And it keeps going and going. I mean, alright, I guess if you danced to it would be kinda fun. But real music is about feeling. There aren't any feelings on this record. It makes me all smiley, and I really don't like being smiley. There's so much pain out there, how can you just ignore it? Velocity Of Sound? I don't get it. It's too simple, it's too jolly, the lyrics don't mean anything. Okay, I'm done. Now where's that Ramones record...
Rotten apples.......2003-12-12
Before we get started here, I have a guilty confession: I like pop music. The really bouncy kind, the kind that's so sugary it could rot teeth. Or, to use another metaphor, music that sounds like someone stuffing prozac in your ears.
As such, it was love at first listen the first time I heard the Apples in Stereo. On earlier albums, I pictured Robert Schneider (the lead singer and primary songwriter) as something like Brian Wilson's hyperactive kid brother, compensating for his lack of musical or lyical depth and his tendency toward repetition with a boundless energy and optimism. And while I'm not placing, say, "Tone Soul Evolution" up there next to "Pet Sounds", I loved it.
So like the mindless consumer I am, "Velocity of Sound" came out and I skipped all the way to the record store and slapped my $15 or so on the counter without hearing a single track, popped the CD in my CD player and cried all the way home.
Okay, that's an exaggeration. But not by much. I know they couldn't be shiny and happy forever, and it's good that they tried to climb out of the musical niche they had carved for themselves. But I've listened to it ten times, in good moods and bad, and I just can't force myself to like it. Change is good, but changing into a generic clone of The Strokes is bad, and that's what they did. They added a distorted guitar or so and tried to sing/shout over it (I'll admit here that the resulting vocals are occasionally less abrasive than the nasally ones we've come to know and tolerate), and decided that if they couldn't have good lyrics, they'd have lyrics that were harder to understand. In this confusion, they lost their melodies, which before were the selling point of their songs, leaving the bouncy listener humming it under her breath all day. What remains just sounds kind of tone-deaf.
Given the recent "returning to the roots of rock" movement (whatever the name for it is I'm sure it's equally stupid), I can't help but feel like the Apples are attempting to gain a bigger fan base by riding in the wake of The Stokes/Hives/Vines. The result is something that manages to completely miss both the original Apples sound and the sound of the bands they seek to imitate. Here's hoping the next time they try to expand their style, they do it in a way that's a little more true to them.
Welcome back Mitch!.......2003-10-23
Well, we`ve waited 15 years for the next Let`s Active / Mitch Easter record---and here it is!! It was well worth the wait. FABULOUS!! Welcome back Mitch!
Guitar Takes Over.......2003-09-01
OK, I had finally come to accept that the Apples in Stereo were not going to get any better than they already were. I thought Fun Trick Noisemaker was a solid album, but the vocals got on my nerves at times. But this album was surprisingly full of great guitar and the vocals did not get overbearing with a bunch of "la la la's" that I am used to hearing from them. And while many may say the album is too short (it's less than 30 minutes!), the truth is it would lose its charm if it were any longer. In addition, the Apples may have solved my "vocals problem" by inserting smack dab in the middle of the album a different lead vocalist, bass guitarist Eric Allen. I only wish there was more of Mr. Allen because his contribution, "Yore Days" is possibly the strongest song on the album. While the first song "Please" is a little bit on the "gooey" side, it has an engaging chorus that I found myself singing long after the CD was finished. About the only song I may have a problem with is "Where We Meet", in which lead singer Robert Schneider does a great job of whining like a kid in a candy store, refusing to leave until he gets his lollipop.
While I may not be totally familiar with every Apples in Stereo album, this album seems to move away from the quirkiness of their previous efforts to more of a power pop sound akin to Blur or (dare I say it?) Brendan Benson. This is definitely a good thing.

Fantastic!.......2000-01-08
This is one of the best peices of music I have ever come across, and yet one of the most newest sounding musics Iv'e heard in a long time, if not thee most. It's inticate simplicity, original, mesmerizing, dissonant, repetitious ringing pulse is SOOO wonderfully moving it can take you to another place(REALLY LOUD IS THE KEY). It has a variety of uniquely arranged instruments, such as the electric guitar which has built in magnetic driver-sustainers for each string and new frets that were installed in a just intonation, and many other cool, original instrument arrangements that really make this sound great and very different (like an acustic guitar outfitted with snares witch is played percussively with sticks, etc). Buy it!

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected, but not bad.......2003-04-25
I bought this CD in the hopes that it would be more Synthpop, but it turned out to be more trance. But this is ok, tracks 1 and 6 more then make up for the few shortcommings.
Between this and the new Iris cd this is just about all I listen.
Trancy synthy.......2003-02-26
Great disc. Until You Say You Are is poetic. Would be five stars if a few more songs had lyrics.
Awesome!.......2002-12-19
I just bought this cd and I must say it is excellent. I have been waiting a long time for a crossover hybrid such as this one. Apparently The last reviewer was pretty ignorant when he tried to compare these guys to synthpop and has obviously never heard of techno. It is not synthpop but more dance music with pop influence. Fans of BT or Paul Oakenfold should like this one. I can't wait for the next CD!
Aargh! Like listening to a drum machine for over an hour.......2002-09-04
I know there are people who like sounds like this (the other two reviewers being prime examples). However, I will warn anyone who thinks this might be very similar to The Echoing Green, that it is not. I consider myself a big fan of textured synthesizer music (synthpop), where you've got catchy hooks and layers of sound blended together. This is the anti-layered sound. It's a redundant loop of a bass beat with an occasional soundbyte from the female vocalist. Perhaps this works for those who enjoy music purely to dance to. I was disappointed, because I thought this would be more like "headphone music"...creative blends of sounds wrapped around a complementary voice or voices, infused with semi-meaningful lyrics. Instead, at 1-2 minutes in on each of these tracks, there has been no variation of sound. The lyrics are drivel. You're better off, if you have a synthesizer at home, to simply set it to one of the pre-programmed settings. You can listen to hours of beats without spending a dime.
This is my favorite album!!!.......2001-06-19
I not only have the pleasure of listening to this album but the artist is a friend of mine. His artistic ability is overwhelming. The female vocals are very relaxing and comforting while still making you want to get up and dance. My favorite track is Illuminate. Keep up the good work!!
Peace,
Danny

Album Description
Paper Dolls And Paper Plates is a pop masterpiece. Bright, ringing guitars sit beside sparse cellos, vintage organ, angelic harmonies, and the beautiful, warm voice of Sarah Knab. The Album has guest vocals by Matt Felch of SIXTY ACRES and Eric Brace of LAST TRAIN HOME.
Customer Reviews:
Folk Rock Lives!.......2000-12-21
For those who yearn for the heyday of folk rock, this CD has it all. 'Absolutely Everything' is reminiscent of early 10,000 Maniacs, 'Wrong Face' could easily have made it on to the Indigo Girls' Strange Fire, and I think 'Not You' even has an retro Smiths feel to it. If you're tired of all of the cookie cutter groups on the radio today, listen to this and see why grass roots is where it's at!
I never tire of this CD!.......2000-12-05
There is something about this CD that makes it possible for me to play it incessantly and never tire! Maybe its that same something that causes me to catch myself humming the tunes of the poignant song Wrong Face while waiting in line. The CD Paper Dolls and Paper Plates is a magnificent find for anyone looking to hear the warm, deep voice of Sarah Knab flow beautifully over the rhythmic harmonies of the guitars, cellos, and organs of the rest of the band. Fear of Commitment successfully sings about loves gone wrong, yet avoids the ever-annoying whining that is present in so much of today's music. It jumps from the slow, almost whimsical sound of Thirteen Years to the upbeat Times Have Changed.
