Album Description
Separately, Michael Manring, Larry Kassin, and Tom Darter have extensive, multi-faceted careers as musicians. Together, Manring Kassin Darter plays provocative, complex compositions - music that tears down stylistic walls and refuses to be compartmentalized. While listeners can hear echoes of classical, jazz, rock, folk, avant-garde, and world music in their performances, the net result is something completely new: chamber music for the new century. Album Description
More marches, waltzes, and fox trots in this recording of the New Verbeeck Band Organ at Seabreeze Park in Upstate New York. On a hill above scenic Lake Ontario, the music of the band organ can be heard on the breezes drifting over the blue water. Twenty-three tunes bring back the sounds of summer from Seabreeze Park - the whirling carousel and prancing horses spin around to the music of childhood, and this fabulous recording captures the wonderful memories. Grab the popcorn, and come for a ride! This completely digital recording is crystal clear and an oversized insert includes pictures and fond memories of Merrick Price - to whom the album is dedicated. The last song was recorded on the carousel while it was moving - an innovative idea that captures the sensation of really being on the ride is enhanced by wearing headphones. This piece of Americana in music - a must for the audio collector, carousel enthusiast, or fan of mechanical music, is a one-of-a-kind gift item.

carousel.......2007-01-03
Carousel Memories does not have the luster that I had expected. The music is not as clear as I would have liked, however, it does have some good qualities that make it worth while to listen.
The Ideal Merry-Go-Round.......2005-07-18
This is a recording by and for merry-go-round lovers. It assembles 23 tracks of mostly characteristic carousel music, played upon a newly constructed band organ handmade by Belgian Johnny Verbeeck to replicate the old Wurlitzer 165 destroyed by a fire around 1995. The fire also claimed most of the carousel itself, which was rebuilt using some restored parts from the original (PTC#36). The recording site is Seabreeze Park on Lake Ontario in upper New York.
In another review I mentioned that that CD offered a partial and rather idealized carousel experience, for it could only provide the sound, and that sound was much more refined and free of ambient noise than would be encountered during an actual carousel ride. That comment applies as well to this recording, and perhaps more so, for the band organ in a typical operating carousel never sounded so good as the one here. This instrument has a remarkably lovely, sweet tone and, being brand new, is in perfect condition. The rolls used were obtained from no less a source than the Library of Congress, and represent a very choice selection.
The music itself includes mostly waltzes, marches, polkas, and one-time popular songs, such as Beer Barrel Polka, Sweet Rosie O'Grady, Liberty Bell, and Scatter-Brain. Less to be expected, but supremely apt, is the fine waltz from Richard Rodger's overture to the musical show Carousel. This last was experimentally recorded on the moving carousel, and thus provides an especially realistic auditory image.
For merry-go-round and band organ enthusiasts this recording might well occupy a place of honor in their CD collection. For those who desire a more realistic, though less ideal, recording I would recommend the old 1973 Takoma Records release "Last Chance on the Merry-Go-Round" (# A 1038), which I believe is no longer in the catalog. (Takoma Records was acquired in 1995 by Fantasy Records.) My personal copy of A 1038 is an LP, and I suspect no CD version was ever released. That recording was made at the carousel on the pier at Santa Monica, California, shortly before the pier was to be demolished. (Thus the title of the recording.) Since it was made while the carousel was actually in operation, the sounds of bystanders and children, along with the carousel drive motor are included. I don't know what ever became of that carousel or its band organ, but would guess they were moved to some collection somewhere. In any case, I have fond memories of wandering along the pier on a fine Saturday afternoon and watching and listening to the carousel and its excited young customers.

dangerously addictive.......2007-06-26
This CD contains an excellent selection of songs from the Russian 5. I was atrracted immediately by the Borodin songs which open this CD, and was suprise to find that the quality of the songs are just as good for the less well known Balakirev and Cui. And maybe because of their lack of formal music training, they tend to excel in this short genre. Borodina does justice to all the songs. Her voice is dark and seductive and her interpretation tends to understate (when comparing to Gorchakova), which is perfectly fine. Once I know the songs, I find myself hard to stop listening to them, it seems like each repeated listening reveals something new.

scatter, la escencia de In The Nursery.......2000-07-10

Very Nice!.......2006-12-26
A great pairing, really. This wasn't where I started on my Fela collection, but having listened to it quite a few times now I have to rank it among my favorites like Confusion/Gentleman, Opposite People/Sorrow, Tears, and Blood. In the first 30 seconds or so of 'Everything Scatter' I knew I was going to like this, and of course (go Fela!) wasn't disappointed. I admit I'm particularly intrigued with track #2 and stunned to awake when it's done. It's one of those Fela grooves that take you on vacation (so to speak) and let you really think for a minute. Love the CD.
More Classic Fela Reissued.......2003-07-07
"Everything Scatter/Noise for Vendor Mouth" is another gem in the Fela two-albums-on-one-CD reissue series on MCA. It should be noted that unlike some of the other titles in this series, the tracks that make up the "Everything Scatter" LP -- the title cut and "Who No Know Go Know" -- were previously available on CD on the Celluloid label in the late 80s. "Scatter" was part of the original "Zombie" disc, and "Who No Know" was on "Mr. Follow Follow." Both "Everything Scatter" and "Noise for Vendor Mouth" (and its b-side "Mattress") were originally released in 1975. This was the beginning of what was arguably Fela's greatest period, and in the next three years he would release more than a dozen albums! While "Zombie" and "Opposite People" are clearly the essential recordings from this period, this disc, and all of the Fela reissues, are really indispensable.

Artsy, Dark, Melodic Indie Rock with a Gothic Flavor.......2005-06-10
I first discovered these guys on purevolume.com somehow. What I heard amazed me. 'Caesura' and 'City In the Sea' are posted on that site and are incredible tracks. Their sound was quite refreshing in comparison to the generic stuff that's coming out these days and definitely caught my attention. Now I am not a goth but I do definitely appreciate the old gothic rock sound. While I understand that there's a difference between the old 80's goth sound and Scatter the Ashes, I must say that I pick up a definite influence. Forgive me for this comparison, but I almost get a feeling of Bauhaus or something along those lines from these guys. I say this not because they sound the same but because STA incorporates the dark ghostly guitar and just have an overall original and unique sound, much like what made Bauhaus great. However, the difference really comes with the composition of the songs. STA combines catchy melodic choruses with drawn out (in a good way) atmospheric instrumental points and such. The beginning of the CD starts out with probably one of the best intro's to any CD with the song, 'Caesura' which packs a punch with a catchy sound that both gets you singing along and a chorus that almost gives your soul an out of body experience with its spiritual overtone. And then every other song just leads into the next one. It really is a CD to be listened to from start to finish and has a beautiful flow to it. Every song sounds completely different and has a different flair to it.
In response to those folks who think that the singing could be better. I just want to comment that it's exactly the way it needs to be. Beautiful sometimes and harsh other times. It matches the music perfectly. Daryl, the vocalist, almost has a way of leading you on a journey through the music that gives you a ride of excitement. As the music crescendos so do the vocals, and as the music gets softer so does the mood of the screaming and it turns into gorgeous singing. Now don't get me wrong, it may sound like some scremo which often times incorporates two styles of singing. Melodic voice with a screamer. That's not at all how this is. Like I said the vocals just flow with the songs. Everything is very on par and together. In no way does anything sound out of place.
Lastly, I just wanted to comment on what other reviewers have said about these guys live. Even though the singer is usually half naked and moves with the music in a homoerotic fashion, these guys are awesome. Some audiences may be bored with the CD or with their show, but you just have to realize what kind of band STA are. They're not a hardcore band! They're a unique band that puts the listener in a euphoric state full of ecstacy and agony within the progression of the songs. So the music doesn't allow these guys to be jumping all over the stage, that's why they don't. People would be mocking them even more if they did wild crap on stage, because it would be so far removed from the actual music. I've talked to these guys off stage and they are probably the nicest band that I've met. They are genuinely concerned about the music and doing everything with sincerity. If the vocalist is gonna get into the music in his own way let him. If the music is gonna be different, let it be. These are all signs of true artistry since it is from the human heart and with STA you can totally tell that they're putting everything that they have into their music. The recording quality is incredible and everything is as loud or quiet or whatever as it should be throughout the album. It is rare, at least in my opinion, to find a band these days who is successful in any attempt to differentiate themselves through their artistic creativity and innovation. However STA has achieved this, and they don't care if you like it, they're just doing what's real to them. But hey, even if you don't like it, they'll still be nice guys to you. Their priority is not winning over fans but doing music, but they still appreciate every fan that they have.
Long story short, if you have a taste for some of the old goth stuff, are into atmospheric stuff, go to art school, or you just want some indie that's different, check these guys out! You can't go wrong with getting a CD that's "Like New" for $0.95. Hell, you could probably make a profit selling it to some used CD store. So give STA a try. If it's not your thing right away, give it a few spins in your stereo and believe me, it will grow on you. You can't lose.
Instant Classic.......2005-05-02
After seeing this band live I was amazed to find out how many people did not like them. They are differant and unique, and thats what makes them fantastic. I met the band afterwards, and was also suprised at how nice they are. They take time to hang out and talk with their fans.
Right now the CD is $0.95 here on amazon, and it is the best deal you will find anywhere. A mix of low tone indie music, with a Refused type attitude. It is simply amazing. Pick this one up while it's cheap, because Scatter the Ashes will become a household name soon.
ha!.......2005-01-24
i almost liked this band, then i saw them preform. oh heavens...i was soooo embarrassed for them (namely the singer) that i had to leave. yeeee. i would describe it as a bunch of high school kids who try a bit too hard. but some stuff does stand out such as their obvious influence from the refused. so i say buy it as long as you are not easily embarrassed.
Great band, Terrible Vocals.......2004-12-13
This album was a huge dissapointment - not because of the music, but because the vocalist pretty ruins almost all of the songs. Right when I would start to get into many of the songs, the vocalist would just come in and, ugh...he is just one of those singers who tries too hard to sound angry. I could just imagine what this guy would be like performing live. The emotion he tries to bring forth just does not sound genuine, but instead sounds very derived and just plain silly. Track 3 is the worst. Some of the lyrics are also pretty awful - non-descriptive, non-artistic, non-expressive, and immature. That can work well for certain bands, but it just sounds so awkward with this one.
I do like a lot of the music, however. Track 1 is my favorite!
The drums on this record are really dynamic, and not just your usual "rock" style. There is some real experimentality going on there. Thumbs up to the drummer on this record for his creative ideas. Too bad the sound quality of the drums in the overall mix doesn't really stand out :( There should have been a bit more bottom end on the EQ.
Now for the guitar work. It is Rockin'!! Nice strong distorted chords and riffs, and the clean guitars are layered in a very "dreamy" soothing manner in certain moments. Cool stuff.
This band (except the singer) CERTAINLY has Talent!
What made me buy this album was an interview where one of the band members talks about some of his musical influences, which included Billy Howerdell of 'A Perfect Circle' He also talked about creating "landscapes" and ambient moods. I am a fan of A Perfect Circle as well as other ambient music, so I thought I'd give these guys a chance. I don't regret buying this album. The band just needs a new vocalist.
Don't buy this album if you are expecting a singer who can give you chills with his haunting voice and lyrics. You just won't find it here. But if you like groups such as AFI, you might really appreciate this singer.
Brilliant.......2004-07-18
From the moment I listened to Caesura, I knew there was something special about scatterthashes. I bought the album, and not to my surprise, every song is a hit. I didn't feel there was one bad track on the album - everything was top notch material. Sure, STA themselves feel they could have pulled off a better release, HOWEVER, you can't deny the quality of Devout/The Modern Hymn. It's easily the best debut of 2004.
I recommend this album to everyone, and I hope you appreciate the record as much as I have.
