Days of the New II
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
These certainly are new days for singer-guitarist Travis Meeks. A mere 18 when his band's self-titled debut hit with singles including "Shelf in a Room" and "Touch, Peel and Stand," 1999 finds the 20-year-old frontman minus his former Days of the New band mates and plus a new female singer and lineup. These radical departures could easily have spelled disaster, but 2, a year in the making, is a surprisingly mature and powerful pastiche of classic-rock leanings mixed with the headiness of a modern Doors, some slight Southern accents, and the acoustic leanings of a Led Zeppelin. Neither as dark nor as vocally Pearl Jam-ish as the band's debut, this ambitious sophomore outing borders on the pretentious and self-indulgent at times, but is ultimately a triumph. Meeks plays most of the instruments, and the orchestral arrangements and vocals of 20-year-old Nicole Scherzinger work beautifully (especially on the buoyant "Bring Yourself") with the energetic acoustic guitars and varied and abundant aural accents. Not a singles-oriented outing, 2 presents a potent and emotive musical soundscape that's complex, spacious, and diverse. Katherine Turman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal.......2007-06-21
This is a stunning CD; one of my all time favorites. The songs are haunting and uplifting in turns, brilliantly orchestrated and superbly performed.
The album flows from start to finish and is full of great surprises along the way.
For instance, 'Flight Response' from it's rather inauspicious beginning gradually builds into something very powerful: and that's only the first song!!
There are no weaknesses here, truly a very special collection.
You really need some time with this and once you're 'in' to it, take some more time to listen from start to finish.
Highly recommended to anyone.
A Whole New Sound for Travis Meeks.......2007-01-07
And I love it!
I became a huge fan of DOTN in 2005 when someone (who turned out not so much a fan of the band but a fan of the radio hits from the first album, and hated the second and third) played me their first album. I was seriously impressed by the guitar soloing on their debut, all acoustic, which I personally prefer over the electric guitar (although, as Zep is my favorite band, I obviously love electric, too).
I bought the first album, but for about a year, I neglected to buy 2, mainly because, at the time, I was building my obsession with Led Zeppelin, collecting everything I could, officially released and unofficially released. Finally, in January 2006, I bought this album.
I was blown away. I'm actually glad Travis got rid of his original band. I've heard Tantric, and they obviously had a different idea of where DOTN should go then Travis did. This album presents a new style that Travis would contiue, to a point, at least, in his third album.
The addition of orchestras and the subtle, in-the-back electric guitar are incredible additions. I think the small choir here and the additional vocals of Nicole Scherzinger were a brilliant touch and added to the potency of the album.
Each and every song is so different yet flows so well with the next, and I can honestly say there is not one song on this album that is only filler or ignorable (and I say the same about The Yellow Album and The Red Album).
I also find that Travis, here, is able to show off his true genious. He wrote and composed these songs. And, as he especially showed on The Red Album, but here as well, he plays much more than just guitar. He can play bass, drums, other strings... the man is a true musical genious.
And with all these additions and style-changes, the album still rocks as hard, if not harder than, the first album. It still holds it grunge, and heavy rock, and acoustic metal, and even dark country. You aren't missing anything you got with the first album. You're just getting so much more with it.
I bought The Red Album not long after, and now I can't wait for The Purple Album. I wonder where Travis will take his fans next?
Different but good........2006-09-29
I had to buy this albumn after being so impressed with the debut albumn Days of the New "yellow albumn" aka 1. I liked this one also...not having a name I have named it the Days of the New "green albumn".
On this cd there were some changes to the band members specifically they added a female backup vocal. She fits in most songs, such as Flight response and The real. But in others like Take me back then and Phobics of tragedy something does not jive.
In general there are plenty of good songs on this 14 track cd to please you. Of course there is the brilliant sound of acoustical guitar throughout. It is trully a pleasure to enjoy this band on a fine pair of speakers that can trully bring out the strings plucking and sliding.
Glad I bought this album........2006-09-05
At fist I was hesitant to purchase the second release from Days of the New. I hadn't really known anything about the album or have even heard a single track. I was just going off what I heard and by the fact that I enjoyed their first one. I'm glad I did decide to take the chance and purchase it when I did. The second one was slightly different from the first but in no way makes it any worse. I might actually go as far as saying its better. I haven't yet made my final decision on which one is better but I do think the second release does come quite close to the first. Anyway some highlights from the second release are "Real", "Enemy", "Take Me Back Then", and "Phobics of Tragedy". Here are ratings for everything else...
1. Flight Responce - 10/10
2. Real - 10/10
3. Enemy - 10/10
4. Weapon and the Wound - 10/10
5. Skeleton Key - 9.5/10
6. Take Me Back Then - 10/10
7. Bring Yourself - 8.5/10
8. I Think - 8.5/10
9. Longfellow - 7/10
10. Untitled - (Cant Be Rated)
11. Phobics of Tragedy - 10/10
12. Not the Same - 6.5/10
13. Provider - 8/10
14. Last One - 8/10
Overall: 89% B+
It was so close to being an A- I decided it deserved 5 stars just due to the fact it has so many good songs. Sure there are a few average songs but there really aren't any terrible tracks on this record. Days of the New's second release is just one good listen.
One of the Best.......2006-07-17
I love this CD. Simple as that. After dumping his band, Travis Meeks delivered an awesome album. Acoustic based yet has some updated sounds. He incorporates the musicality with a dark vibe. Some interplay between songs for effect.
I always got into this CD. Once you listen once you cant stop. Great and underappreciated. Hope he can get his act together, he is a talent!.

Customer Reviews:
Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13
Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.
I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.
A Must Have .......2006-12-12
I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.
The Mario Lanza Collection.......2006-11-10
I had forgotten just how beautiful a voice from the past was. It is a wonderful collection
The MARIO LANZA Collection.......2006-08-19
extract from most important LPs. Brilliant sound quality from RCA. Also included are soundtrack recordings from some of his movies. The are several reissues from Mario Lanza but this one is a collection you should have.
WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19
The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Great collection of 19th/20th Century music.......2003-08-12
This is a great collection of works from 19th and 20th century women composers. Keep in mind, it is only a small sample of what's available, but an excellent place to start. It is also a good choice if you are a teacher wanting to introduce women composers to your class and do not want to invest in dozens of CDs. There are no large-scale works on this CD, so it is ideal as a sampler (or for use with kids in a classroom setting). I highly recommend this CD.
It's about Time!.......2001-12-07
A top-notch sampling of mainly 20th-century music by women composers, including Lili Boulanger and Pulitzer Prize-winners Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Shulamit Ran, this cd proves that the music has been excellent all along. What we have needed are good recordings of superior performances. The samples often are brief--e.g., a single movement from Clarke's cello sonata--yet do provide jumping off points for more concentrated pursuit of favorite composers. Those uninitiated in women's works will become familiar here with some of the best of the last 150 years: Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Thea Musgrave, and on and on. I hope every author of a text on music since 1840 will come to know and adore this cd, then include the music in their discussions of music history. It's about time!

Customer Reviews:
Sounds bad.......2006-10-13
The edition of this CD that I have only contains the first CD listed above. So this review is an assessment of those first 11 songs.
My interest in Shostakovich continues to grow, despite these unprofessional recordings. The sustained notes that conclude the "Waltz (from 'Golden Mountains')" are overblown and horribly out-of-tune. The vocal solos are delivered with just as much subtlety. In all honesty, much of this collection sounds like a remedial high school band that had booked just two hours of studio time.
Overall, pretty crummy sounding.
Would have been one of Hollywood's best........2004-01-10
Shostakovich's film music is usually disparaged when compared with his concert hall compositions. Of course it isn't up to those standards. Most of the movies weren't good & some scoring assignments were actually propaganda punishments for his "formalist" & "decadent" creative transgressions, & none ranks with the Eisenstein/Prokofiev collaborations. But try comparing this music with what came out of Hollywood during the later of these years. Alex North is rightly praised for "Cleopatra," Franz Waxman for "Taras Bulba" & "Peyton Place." Also John Green's "Raintree County." These are hardly film classics. Miklos Rozsa, a consummate professional, turned out memorable scores for some very expensive clinkers. Such examples are legion. Brits William Walton & Malcom Arnold arranged concert suites of their movie music. & I personally despise Maurice Jarre for composing that insidious earworm, "Lara's Theme."
This double CD box is indifferently programmed & contains no liner notes; you'll have to sort out the history yourself. But the performances are fine - a few are on higher-priced releases. The music itself ranges from cabaret to waltzes to dramatic battle action. In "New Babylon" the Krafty Komposer demonstrates the sardonic wit he often used to mock his Soviet Kulture Kummittee Kumrades.
