It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:
Buble is still on a roll.......2007-07-23
Michael Buble still fills the musical niche left by Sinatra's passing. The big band is top-notch and Michael, despite his youth, swings big time on these solid standards. Another good addition to your Buble collection.
Awesome.......2007-07-23
Michael Buble is awesome and so is his latest CD. It is defintly one of his best. Such a variety of songs on it and he sings each one fantasically. I 100% recommend buying this CD.
Spotty.......2007-07-21
This is my first Michael Buble CD. I find that I really like his coverage of jazz standards, but mostly his forays into other genres like "You Look Beautiful Tonight" leave me flat. Gorgeous voice, though!
Buble Swinging and Singing Softly - A VERY Good Effort.......2007-07-19
The follow-up to Buble's last effort, the terrific CD/DVD, which featured his wonderful self-penned song, "Home," may not have some of the energy and verve of that set (and that incredible concert), but this is STILL a fine collection of songs, with several standouts: "Everything," another of Buble's own compositions is upbeat, fun, and swinging (even if some of the lyrics are a bit weak); "I've Got the World on a String," which features members of the band calling out his name, is another winner, and beautifully arranged; "Wonderful Tonight," works perfectly as a Latin tinged duet, which will remind some of Sinatra's work with Antonio Carlos Jobim; and "Dream," which concludes the CD, might be something you'll hear on a late night jazz station and LOVE. The CD is somewhat uneven - I'm not sure we need another version of "Always on My Mind," but it's still well done. "Lost," another Buble composition, doesn't really build well as a song, and "That's Life" doesn't work nearly as well as the great Sinatra original. BUT - there's no doubt this man is a talented singer, who can clearly sing in a variety of styles (if you've seen him in concert, imitating Michael Jackson and others, you'll know he's capable of continued excellence in his singing, phrasing, and song selection). I'd love to hear him do a version of "Alfie," for instance, to sing more of his own upbeat compositions, and collaborate more with some great female singers, but THIS work, though not a completely satisfying CD, is still VERY good and worth purchasing. Many of the songs catch up to you, as Buble, singing without apparent enhancement, allows his voice to be a little rawer than in his debut album. He sounds real and true - and his band, as always, is beyond first rate. They are completely in synch, as they are in their concerts. I think, to quote one of the songs on this fine CD, "The Best is Yet To Come," holds true for this great entertainer. He seems sure to produce some kind of concept album, along the lines of "In the Wee Small Hours," ala Sinatra - and I think he can pick better material in some places. But his voice, his band, some of the fine songs, especially his own hit tune, "Everything," make this a MUST for fans. Bubleland is STILL a fine place to be! And the man is building a terrific body of work.

I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS CD! I JUST HAVE TO HAVE THE REST OF MICHAEL BUBLE'S CD'S!

Aha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers' conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll's zenith. There's hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--"My Party," "Camaro," and the sarcastic "Charmer"--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings' blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band's approach heard, in several of the record's 13 songs. Reverb guitar and vocals and a "woo woo" chorus add a sinister aspect to "Trunk," and "Knocked Up" features a laissez-faire Caleb Followill crooning "She don't care what her mama said/She's gonna have my baby." The seven-minute revelation of fatherhood that opens the album leads into the U2-influenced "McFearless," a reggae-splashed "Ragoo," and the rambling English blues of "Black Thumbnail." It's a rogue element that has always left every record fresh, and this time it has Kings of Leon teetering on the edge of rock renown. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:
Do not hesitate to buy if you were disappointed with ASH.......2007-07-11
I thought Youth and Young Manhood was excellent, thought Aha Shake Heartbreak wasn't that good and therefore wasn't gonna pick up Because of the Times. But my husband had read good reviews and purchased it. Wow! What a coup/comeback for the Followill boys! I think this is their best so far; a very strong disc. I don't think there is a dud song on the whole album. I almost blew out the speakers in my car cranking up Black Thumbnail and My Party over and over and over. Moody, diverse, rockin' - love it! Buy it, you will not be sorry you did.
Disappointing comeback.......2007-07-07
Maybe it's just me, but I haven't been able to get into this. I loved their first album, thought their second one was okay, but this one may be worse than the last one. I can't really give too thorough of a review since I didn't get past the fourth song on the first listen, and haven't listened to it since, even seriously considered trading it in.
I got this CD after reading a stellar review by Q Magazine appauding it. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
Best Alternative/Indie/Rock Album This Year.......2007-07-05
If you're reading this review, you probably know to some extent who the Kings of Leon are - a relatively young indie-rock band out of Tennessee whose appeal is said to come from equal parts youthful energy and wisdom-beyond-their-years.
Their debut was a southern-fried scramble of distorted guitars and yelping vocals that seemed to delight in its own unholiness. On Because of the Times, the guitars are still distorted, the singer's still yelping and the themes aren't necessarily wholesome - see 'Knocked Up', in which singer Caleb belts "She don't care what her mama says, no she's gonna have my baby" - but at times there's a beauty to the arrangements that's almost divine.
That's not to suggest that the band has forgotten to rock, though, because they haven't; in fact, at this point in their career the band has the musicianship to back up their ambition, and the result is some of the most fulfilling rock you can hear on the indie scene today.
If you like either of KoL's previous two albums, you'll love this one. If you're looking for an introduction to the Kings of Leon's work, this is as good a starting point as any.
Absolutely gorgeous, top-notch.......2007-07-01
It's been a while I am aware of KoL. I saw them opening The Strokes and found them interesting. Their first singles were intriguing. But with this album they have reached a summit of musical expression. Sure their sound is certainly more polished, more produced than before, sometimes dangerously sounding U2ish but this CD is simply a beauty of universal soul music. The singer has such an extraordinary soulful voice and melodies and orchestration are captivating. Easily one of the best CDs of 2007 and already lining up for best of 2000s!
Wow- New Music that actually lives up to its reputation?.......2007-06-30
This is a really good CD. I was surprised b/c I have heard them described as the Skynrd Strokes. I am not really a big fan of the Strokes and living in Ohio, you hear Skynrd everytime you turn the radio on. But, this album is unique and doesn't seem packaged. This album has a lot of soul. Buy it, learn the lyrics and sing as loud as you can while in the shower.

First CD sounded as if Michael Buble had a lisp. Amazon sent me a replacement and it sounded the same. Poorly recorded
Me and Mrs Jones.......2007-07-19
Michael, How impressive can you be?? ..."Me and Mrs Jones" is by far your most impressive song! We saw you in concert last night and you brought us all to your hand with your rendition! You are totally awesome with all your talent.
simply the best!!.......2007-07-03
Thank you, Mr Buble, for this fresh new cd of great material! Your take on "Me and Mrs Jones" is now one of my top favorites! Cannot wait to see you on stage again!
Love the man - Love the voice.......2007-06-08
I have all of Michael's CD's & DVD's & am madly in love with his music. His personality shines through on every song. I have never liked the song Mrs. Jones before (actually hated it) but Michael's version of it has made it my favorite on the CD. One thing I can not understand though - where did the lisp come from? It wasn't evident on any of the other CD's or DVD's before. It threw me through a loop at first but being such a fan the music finally won me over. It's a mystery to me - but I still Love the man - Love the voice.

Call Off the Search was released in the U.K. in November 2003 to deserved acclaim, alongside countless declarations that this 19-year-old British music school-educated, Russian-born singer is "the next Norah." There are similarities--Melua does work within a jazz/blues idiom, is talented beyond her years, and concentrates more on classics than her own material (ten are covers and two originals). But she's far more of a classic showbiz type singer than the sultry and sophisticated-sounding Jones. On the single "The Closest Thing to Crazy," for instance, Melua's phrasing is pure show tune. But it works for her, as it did for Lena and Liza before. The only weak link resides in a few straightahead blues songs, notably the 12-bar stomp "My Aphrodisiac Is You." Melua has the talent, she just lacks the soul to put oomph into a song that namechecks the Kama Sutra (this is as it should be, of course, as she's a teenager, but the choice of material is suspect nonetheless). Melua is a great torch singer who deserves the spotlight; odds are you'll eagerly await her next album before you're even done listening to this one all the way through. --Mike McGonigal

katie.......2007-06-08
best young female artist around at the moment - great voice and great storytelling songs love with a bit of humor and great play on words
Her voice has heart and she's a charming performer.......2007-05-23
I sometimes laugh at how some of the reviewers take themselves so seriously. I enjoy vocalists regardless of genre and I think Katie has the makings of a promising career. The soulfullness of her songs keep you intrigued and while her styling is somewhat poppy, it has some originality to it. I can understand why some may not prefer her voice or don't think she compares well to other great female vocalists, but some of the rantings of her being talentless or having a terrible voice invalidate the authors' opinions. These extreme views are certainly questionable.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-03
one of the most beautiful voices in the world, and will ever be. a classic.
best listening on a rainy, cold, dark day.......2006-12-13
i accidently bumped into this british singer. Her song of "ninety million bicycle" is just refreshing right down to the the song title. she is definately one of her own kind.
Phenomenal voice!!!.......2006-05-06
Katie Melua has a very unique and beautiful voice. I only found out about her, because of James Blunt, who is another newcomer with wonderful voice and great music. I recently got Katie's CD, and I just love how easy and comfortable she sings. Not forced at all. She's in the same gendre as Norah Jones, but I think Katie has a better voice and sound. My favorites so far in this cd, after listening twice are "The Closest thing to Crazy" & "My Aphrodisiac is you." I'm definitely buying her other CD, "Piece by Piece." I'm very satisfied with this CD, and I'm hoping to see her live performance.

Album Description
Curtain Call includes three new songs--"Fack," "Shake That" (featuring Nate Dogg) and "When I'm Gone"--both written and produced by Eminem. In addition, the Curtain Call bonus track marks the album premiere of the controversial Eminem-Elton John live duet of "Stan" from the 2001 Grammy Awards presentation.
Executive produced by the nine-time Grammy winner, Curtain Call boasts all five of Eminem's gold and platinum singles to date, from the platinum, Oscar, and two-time Grammy-winning "Lose Yourself" (#1 Pop/#2 Rap) from the 8 Mile soundtrack and platinum "Just Lose It" (#6 Pop/#7 Rap) and "Mockingbird" (#11 Pop/#10 Rap) to the gold "Without Me" (#2 Pop/#5 Rap) and "Like Toy Soldiers" (Top 40 Pop). The other Grammy winners included are "My Name Is" (Top 40 Pop/#10 Rap) and "The Real Slim Shady" (#4 Pop/#7 Rap). Also heard are "The Way I Am" (Top 30 Rap), "Stan" (featuring Dido) (Top 40 R&B/Hip-Hop), "Sing for the Moment" (Top 20 Pop/Rap), "Guilty Conscience" (featuring Dr. Dre), and "Cleanin' Out My Closet" (#4 Pop/#5 Rap).
Curtain Call: The Hits spans contributions from all four of Eminem's major-label solo albums: 1999's quadruple-platinum The Slim Shady LP, 2000's nine-times-platinum The Marshall Mathers LP, 2002's eight-times-platinum The Eminem Show, and 2004's Encore, which is almost five times platinum. The three most recent charted #1 Pop and #1 R&B/Hip-Hop, with his major-label debut #2 Pop and #1 R&B/Hip-Hop. Each of his first three albums also won the Best Rap Album Grammy (Encore will be eligible for the 2006 presentation). Eminem has to date sold more than 65 million albums.
Amazon.com
Eminem's four studio albums shattered so many sales records that you might think just about every man, woman and gerbil on the planet already owns a bulk of the songs that make up this greatest hits collection. But Curtain Call presents the perfect opportunity to have another look at the life of Marshall Mathers. Starting out in the vein of the Beastie Boys and Slick Rick, he grafted filthy verses over bubbly nursery rhyme melodies and primitive Casio beats to come up with comical singles like "My Name Is" and "Real Slim Shady." Then angst and reflection set in, resulting in rare moments of vulnerability ("Lose Yourself") and a richer musical experience ("Stan"). The three new tracks reflect the entire spectrum, with "When I'm Gone," a bittersweet goodbye letter, signaling the raw emotion and youthful enthusiasm of his early days have substantially faded, while "Fack" counters that the Detroit rapper still has the dirtiest mouth in the business. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
Shady hits & misses.......2007-05-14
There are some great songs on Curtain Call. His hearfelt, personal songs are my favorite, where he's not trying to be someone he's not. Stan, Cleaning Out My Closet, and The Way I Am are very well written and sound very sincere. Lose Yourself, his best song ever, is very inspiratioonal. I also find Guilty Conscience w/Dr. Dre funny and energetic.
Then there are some songs on here that are just flat out annoying. The ones with silly, nursery rhyme lyrics, like Without Me, Real Slim Shady, or My Name Is...have merely a superficial appeal to young kids. They get real old real quick. I also have to skip past Like Toy Soldiers, because it seems a little pretentious. And by the time Mockingbird drones through the speakers, I'm pretty sick of hearing about his precious little daughter. Yeah, I get it Marshall, you love your little girl. Neato.
One of my biggest complaints of this CD is that the song Superman didn't make it on here. Why not?!? Maybe his beloved ex-wife found it too offensive and ordered him to leave it off or else.
Overall, I think the good tunes make this a CD worth owning. But you might wear out the NEXT button on your stereo trying to skip past the junk.
Nice CD to own.......2007-03-20
If you like Eminem but don't LOVE him then this is a good CD for you. It has all of his radio hits from his early years and a few from the recent stuff.
How They're Getting You To Buy The Greatest Hits .......2007-02-19
You know something I've noticed, whenever they make a greatest hits album of anybody they'll always put a couple of unreleased tracks on the disk to make people buy it, because they know we live in the days of iTunes, and so on, and those people who have all the albums can make their own greatest hits CD.
It's kind of obvious FACK and Shake That are studio left overs from Encore.
I dig it, don't tell the Profs.......2007-02-10
Ok, so I'm an English major, and my Psych Prof disses Eminem, but I dig it. I thoroughly enjoy this CD, and it has not been removed from the car CD player for days. Personally, I think there is a lot more going on in Eminem's head than he gets credit for. As a student of Anthropology and Psychology, I also detect a lot of Social Commentary in his work. He seems to be sort-of a musical equivalent of Stephen King (another guy who received little credit for his genius for a long time).
Don't tell the Professors, but I recommend Eminem (aka "Slim Shady"); this CD is groovin' and addictive. He has a unique flow and rhyme scheme. I also recommend his other works and videos.
looking for an excuse not to buy all of his albums..........2006-10-28
well here's his hits! Eminem topped the charts for so long! but most of the songs he released weren't even the best songs he's rapped to. for me, the highlight songs were: Soldier, Til' I Collapse & My Dad's Gone Crazy all from the Eminem Show! all these hits are catchy, some won't like them cause they do sound similar but that's fine. everyone has their own tastes, I never really liked rap until I heard The Real Slim Shady & then Lose Yourself. Eminem is the one that got me into rap so I thank him!
Fack is immature, funny, one of his only songs from his first album!
The Way I Am is probably his most depressing songs/videos and is actually one of the catchiest songs he's ever done!
My Name Is is the only other song from his first album. It's the song that pretty much everyone got to love and that's how he got to be where he is today! it's his first big hit that I can remember at least.
Stan is pretty much one of my favorite tracks because it has an interesting story & is well thought out!
Lose Yourself is by far the best hit he's come out with! It's a great rap song and it's so catchy!
Shake That is a chance to be silly and get up & dance!
Sing for the Moment is obviously an Aerosmith song. but Eminem puts a nice, serious twist to it and is surprisingly an extremely well done song!
Without Me provides us with similar styles to Just Lose It & The Real Slim Shady but all the 3 songs are fun to listen to!
Like Toy Soldiers is probably the best song off of the Encore cd! It's deep, meaningful & is sad to listen to.
Mockingbird is yet another message out to his daughter. but I don't mind it so much cause not only the song catchy but it shows how much he cares for his daughters!
Guilty Conscience, haha, Eminem gets to be the bad guy as he literally convinces people to crimes while Dr. Dre tries to talk them out of it. still, it's an interesting twist for song!
Cleaning Out My Closet reaches out to both his parents who weren't really there for him. Eminem has the right to say everything he does say here and I can understand where he's coming from! but anyways, the song is serious and a good song to catch!
When I'm Gone is his encore song and probably one of the most intense songs beside The Way I Am! It's got alot going for it and it's a great song for an encore!
Stan(live) feat Elton John is basically the same thing as the original except with no swearing and obvious a different singer for the chorus. but I'm not sure it's really worth it to listen to.
Also on the bonus cd there are 7 extra songs like: Criminal, Kill You & Just Don't Give A F*ck! so yah, it's worth your money to get Curtain Call with the bonus cd! the other songs are catchy & worth your money!
As a whole, the cd was well organized & he picked the right songs for the cd! Eminem was one of the best rappers of our time! You should definitely check this out!

ahh, memories..........2006-03-26
I had this as a kid, along with Mozart's Journey through the Magic Flute, and I listened to them all the time. I remember once on my birthday, I had to go see my dad give a lecture before we went out to eat, so I brought along my tape player and this cassette. When i hear it now, I think of that night. Also, I just purchased the CD, and when I got it I was so happy, so exaulted, so thrilled. I was smiling the whole time I was listening during math class. I highly recommend this to any child, Bach has become my favorite composer and I am writing a term paper on him all because of this wonderful recording.
Grew up with this............2005-12-05
I was just listening to some classical music and a piece by Bach came on and i was reminded of this CD (tape when i was a kid) and I really remember loving this recording and listening to it over and over as a kid. It really gave me an appreciation for this kind of music! Maybe from an adult perspective it's simple or inaccurate - but it really brought Bach to life for me as a child.
Such An Impact!.......2004-03-30
As a college student who still remembers and loves her "Mr. Bach Comes To Call", "Beethoven Lives Upstairs", and "Mozart's Magic Fantasy: A Journey Through 'The Magic Flute'", I would recommend these CDs without a doubt. Over a decade later I still remember these tapes (as they were when I first got them) and still remember classical songs that many of my friends can't even name composers to. A wonderful educational investment for your children!
Love it!!!.......2003-08-16
I love this CD, and I'm almost 15!!! I love to listen to it with my brothers (7 and 12) while we're going the dishes.
Outstanding for Early Elementary School Kids. Highly Awarded.......2003-01-13
This is an excellent CD for any early elementary school age child. The story is interesting, and the music snippets are outstanding.
My second grade daughter especially loves this CD (and Bach) because she takes piano lessons.
Mr. Bach Comes To Call received a Parents Choice Award, among others, and was recommended by the much praised "What Your Second Grader Needs to Know." This is a quality CD.
The similar Beethoven CD by Classical Kids is equally superb, and I have read that the Vivaldi CD is good, too.

With a recording career three decades long, one could expect to find someone trapped by the confines of their own yard. Not so with Greg Brown. While he sounds welcome and familiar on his 23rd album, he also continues find new and novel treasures in the forests he roams. His mix of cowboy resonance and existential poetry creates potent songs that sneak up on you, reappearing in the dark silences of night and the squinting brightness of sunrise. His angular narratives are filled with the quest for meaning in the modern world and the desire for connectedness with others, tempered by the knowledge that fractious moments are unavoidable. The accompaniment eschews the communal strumming of his folkie brethren, instead using the swagger one would expect from a set of songs recorded in Memphis. While Brown is marketed as a folk singer, he's actually too soulful to be contained by any one label. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
GREG BROWN FOR PRESIDENT!.......2007-05-11
I concur with "autonomeus" - Greg is THE MAN, in touch with the earth, people, fish; he's sounding the pulse of America. Greg's out there, knows what's going on, and cuts out the [...]. This batch of tunes is very, very, good. Typically, artists put the best tune first, then the quality slides downhill; Greg's record starts out good then gets better and better. I especially enjoy "Eugene" and "Kokomo". I won't stretch this review any further - this CD is a real keeper and my word is good.
Greg for President, now there's an engaging thought. He probably wouldn't do it, but he's the kind of fella we need.
Great Listening.......2007-04-12
Enjoyed this album of Greg's as I do most all of his creations. I was playing this at work and someone walked by and liked the sound so much he bought the album as well. This album has a nice sound throughout. Little bit bluesy folk. A great sample of Greg's work.
Keep on Keeping on.......2007-02-24
This is a very good collection fo music from Mr. Brown. I live for lyrics and and the feelings of rural America, real, lost or hoped for feelings.
Greg allways touches these and this cd is no exception. I also love road trips that are completly unplaned except for a vague destination and he completly paints that picture in Eugene, I find a lot more useful and inspirational thouhts when I am not looking for them. Well worth the money if you can only afford only one cd save your money for food, if not this would be a good investment.
A Must Listen.......2007-02-12
I've been a Greg Brown fan for a few years now. Only recently did I have a chance to see him live(Asheville) and it was truly one of the most memorable musical experiences I've ever had. His songs should be put in a time capsule and saved so the future can remember that this beautiful music existed.
GREG BROWN: A NATIONAL TREASURE.......2006-09-16
I can't really say anything about the artistry of Greg Brown that has not already been said. Men can love him as much as women, because his often highly poetic lyrics contian as much masculinity as they do truth and sensitivity.
Throughout his body of work, he embraces and/or confronts most everything it means to be a man, and to be human, in this world we all inhabit.
As far as I know, no one does this better, or even equal to, Greg Brown.

good music.......2007-05-25
if you like early 80's and punk, you'll like this album. wall of voodoo is a great band often overlooked.
Way out West and ahead of their time.......2007-03-24
This IS it !!!!! If you are an European (like myself), and want to know what America is all about, (both above and below the surface), you get it here - served with a blink in the eye, a smile, alot of fun, and some frustrations. It is all their - blended nicely together.
Wall of Voodoo is phenomenal in American music. Not many other US artists can create such an precise look and perspective on their homeland and the western culture in general. And always served with a surplus of humour !!
The song "Call of the West" is perhaps the finest rock/pop song ever crafted. Big words, but it is hard to beat.
Overall, the lyrics (actually more accurate: full-blown stories) are second to none and the music was perhaps 20 years ahead of its time - mixing rhytm-machines, keyboards, electric guitars in a great mix !
Get it. I will make your life a little richer (which is actually alot)
and a whole lot cooler !!
The Call Of Excellence.......2007-03-07
This is the album that got noticed because of the hit
single "Mexican Radio". So this was there best selling
album & the last with Stan Ridgeway as lead vocalist. I
wish they would have added bonus tracks to this already
excellent album (maybe the 12" dub mix of "Mexican
Radio" Ummm). A excellent record & a band that stood
apart from all others in the 1980's. I highly recommend
you to get this album. After that, buy the two previous
recordings by the band, "The Index Masters" & the highly
collectable rare & expensive "Dark Continent". What are
ya waiting for anyway! Get um! Search "Judemac Forever"
on msn.
Good... but not buyable.......2006-05-10
I had the "45" if anyone even still knows what that is, a single of "Mexican Radio" back in the 80's and after hearing it on the radio the other day, I looked here and saw where you could listen to all the others songs if only for a moment. All I can is- WOW! How did this band crank out suck a kick @ss song compared to the rest of other music on the alblum?! I mean my god their bad. I suppose they grow on you if you forced yourself to listen to it enough times, and Im sure others will disagree harkening back to a better time, better music argument. Sorry, the rest of the track suckx. WOV must have just been another One-Hit-Wonder (despite 9 alblums??!!).
Brilliant.......2006-03-22
This album is as innovative as any ever produced. It is however the antithsis of pop music so pop fans beware. If you want something that is totally out of the box, but never gets old, this it! One of the best rock albums ever!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.
Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03
This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Customer Reviews:
Middle of the road wedding music.......2007-01-20
I bought this cd because I had everything in my wedding planned to the last tiny detail except the ceremony music. All the songs on the cd are nice traditional wedding songs. I did not use any of the music from the cd, but I am glad I bought it because it helped me realize that traditional wedding music was not what I wanted. All and all a nice classical music cd but not for brides who really want a personal ceremony. BTW I went with Enya and Lorena McKennitt.
just what I was looking for.......2007-01-10
We wanted traditional wedding music and found it in this CD. I'm no music expert, but the arrangements and performances seemed fine. I would definitely recommend this CD for any bride looking for a concise collection of traditional wedding pieces.
Most Chosen Selections.......2006-03-13
As a wedding officiant, my wife and I are often asked to assist the couple with other services for their ceremony, such as music. For this, we have a very large selection in our music library to choose from. We have put together a catalog of cd's that we loan out to the couple for their review, and most often, their selections come from BRIDE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING MUSIC.
If you're planning a traditional or formal wedding on a budget, this cd has it all. There are even two selections of Wagner's "Wedding March" to choose from. Only two of the selections have vocals, the rest are all extraordinary instrumental selections.
Often, even around the house or in my car, I find myself listening to this cd. The music is soothing, refreshing, uplifting and most enjoyable. I recommend this cd over all other wedding music cd's.
Another Great Reference CD.......2006-01-09
This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume 2, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs; just about everything on here is standard fare for weddings. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over potential music selections with an organist, a string quartet, etc. Like my review for Volume 2, I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner. BTW: beware of reviewers who don't use their names, especially "A music fan." This is most likely the producer of the "Wedding Traditions" CD and he slanders other CDs so his will look better. You'd think that in the wedding music business people would have better ethics, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. The best advice I can give, as a classical musician myself, if to take time to listen to the sound clips, and if possible, try to find them on iTunes where they might sound higher quality. This is the only real way of knowing whether the CD is right for you.
A Nice CD.......2005-12-30
This is a very nice CD.
Our daughter used some of the songs on this CD
and some of the songs that are on the
"Classical Wedding Traditions" CD for the wedding.
She also used many of the songs on the
"New Wedding Traditions Volume I" CD
Amazon is a great place to find good wedding music
