The Salt Of Your Skin

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Kelly Kessler is the instigator of the Wichita Shut-Ins. She helped frontload the Chicago country music revival during her stint with the Texas Rubies, and stoked the flames with her Honky Tonk Living Room live music series at the Hideout.

Her self-taught guitar work is country through and through yet unlike any other picker's style. Her singing betrays a thorough knowledge of American rural traditions. And Kelly's songs are, according to No Depression, "distinctive and affecting". Kelly has two new albums out, "The Salt Of Your Skin" (solo album) and Kelly Kessler and the Wichita Shut-Ins "Life of Regret" EP on Melungeon Records.

Can also be heard on:

the Texas Rubies' 1st Album (self-release),

the Texas Rubies' Working Girl Blues (Monsterdisc),

For A Life Of Sin (Bloodshot's 1st compilation),

Down To The Promised Land (Bloodshot's 5th anniversary compilation),

Edges From The PostcardIV (Hayden's Ferry compilation),

Big Fish, Little Fish (Sweet Pickle compilation)

Album Description
" I'd say Ms. Kessler's new disc represents the future of alt.country, but that would be a lie. The skill necessary to synthesize the diverse strands of country on this record, not to mention the ability to blend the range of talents from Robbie Fulks to Kent Kessler, just aren't present in enough artists to constitute a movement. Instead, I'll call this a welcome release from a unique talent."

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the mountains to the city.......2002-09-09

If, like me you feel a visceral pull to the southern mountains, but can't commit to leaving the city, you can visit with Kelly Kessler's Salt of Your Skin. Kelly takes traditional mountain themes and harmonies and shapes them into forms most of us didn't know they could take. Her songs are complex, intuitive, humorous and sensual.

5 out of 5 stars More than country, but still "pure" country.......2002-09-08

I don't know of any other CD that has as wide a variety of content and style where every cut is as good as the last. Kelly Kessler is "pure country", but is not limited by that label. She adds new deminsions to the label "country" while still keeping the essence of "country". Now matter what you want to label this CD, it's just plain good. Only Kelly Kessler's music can make you ask yourself why you haven't heard an oboe d'amore on a country CD before. I'm not shure which is better: her voice, her music, her lyrics or her playing. I think what's best is how it all goes together so perfectly.
