Wallflowers frontman Jakob Dylan may have learned the art of ambiguity from his famous father, but as he opens up on the group's bittersweet fourth album he emerges as a true individual. The band's first release since the departure of guitarist Michael Ward, who came on board to make the four-million-selling 1996 album, Bringing Down the Horse, finds Dylan raking over the details of his personal life in close detail. "I think I made a mistake / I think I pushed when you said away," he sings on "If You Never Got Sick," while using blunt tracks like "Too Late to Quit" and "Health and Happiness" to get in further jabs at the woman who did him wrong. To accompany this outpouring of emotion, the band infuses its midtempo Americana with fizzing electronic effects and hard backbeats. It's the Wallflowers' most adventurous and rewarding album yet. --Jaan Uhelszki

Long Live Rock and Roll.......2007-03-22
Red Letter Days is an example of great musicianship. The song writing is powerful, and the vocals are, as always, distinct. The best part is how the whole album listens from start to finish. If you're looking for music to get deep into, this is it. It had my playing air guitar and singing along. Great fun for a 24 year old! ;)
I feel like I am taking crazy pills!!!.......2006-09-12
OK, let me say that I own every Wallflowers album. I have given a five star rating to every single one of them except this one, which I give a one star rating to. Imagine my shock when I open up the reviews and see so many five star ratings. Hey, that is cool, to each their own, but I don't get it. This album seems sappy and desperate to appeal commercially. I hate to use the phrase "sell-out," but I have to. The word cheesy comes to mind on many songs. I actually felt embarassed listening to some. This is nowhere close to Rebel Heart or Breach or BDTH, not even in the same ballpark. I listen to those albums weekly, this one I took to the used record store (where I bought it) and sold it back. Great band, but this album is really bad, in my opinion. Still a great band and if you like it, more power to you.

The Wallflowers Red Letter Days is so good you will be begging for more. This album I guess you would say is more poppy, simpler songwriting and arragements but this album is brilliant from start to finish. This is their best album since Bringing Down the Horse. Jakob Dylan's vocals are smooth, dreamy, and strong as can be on Red Letter Days, this beautiful man can do no wrong. Honestly I have never heard a bad song from this much under-rated band ever! Stanout tracks from Red Letter Days include: How Good It Can Get, Health and Happiness, When You're On Top, Closer To You, Three Ways, See You When I Get There, and Here in Pleasantville. I just about wept when I heard the song Closer To You, this song is so haunting and gorgeous, great piano music and vocals. No one ever talks about The Wallflowers anymore and it's a darn shame because this incredible band is worth talking and hearing, buy this album as soon as possible. Enjoy!
This is how good it can get........2005-11-22
Like most people, I got into the Wallflowers with the song "One Headlight." But it seems only a minority have been lucky enough (and smart enough) to stick around and be rewarded with such great music. This is, hands-down, my favorite of all five Wallflowers albums. Don't let the lack of radio play scare you away. The Wallflowers haven't lost a beat since "Bringing Down the Horse." This is just quality music that you can listen to over and over.
Favorite song: Three Ways
Wallflowers forgotten?.......2005-11-20
I really loved The Wallflowers first album, "Bringing Down The Horse," but for some reason or another, I just lost interest in them soon thereafter. I got this album from a friend and after a few listens, I was reminded how good the WF's are. This is not a new groundbreaking album, but is just good old quality music. Excellent chords and catchy hooks are all over here. The whole album is pretty good and there are 4-5 really great songs. My favorites are "Closer To You," "If You Never Got Sick," "Here In Pleasantville," and my favorite, "Three Ways." If you've ever been remotely interested in the Wallflowers, I highly recommend picking this one up. Pretty sure you will not be disappointed.

Refined, But Not Redefined.......2005-10-21
Now I'd love to start off this review by saying that I've been a fan of RLA forever and ever, back when they were still performing at Bar Mitzfas on weekends, blah blah blah. But that simply isn't true. I discovered them(and am so glad I did)simply because I happened to be lucky enough to live in the coverage area of one of the only three stations to play their single "Burn the Good Ones Down," WNRN here in Virginia. (One of the two others was 99x in Atlanta, the bands hometown.) I bought this ep, and hooked(as it's hard not not to be after listening to it), I went on their website to discover that it was actually their second; they released their first ep "Under Starlight" in '04. So, ofcourse, I had to have it. After being so impressed with this album, I was surprised at my disappointment with it. The songs were long winded, seeming to go on forever, and for all that listening, you hardly got any substance. I kept thinking: "Is it possible that these two CDs came from the same group?" Yes, it is possible. And let me say, I have never heard an improvement from one album to the next this great.
As far as my actual review of this band and their work, excellent. It is basically Brit-pop(which is a bit strange considering the band is from Atlanta), but their music pushes all sorts of boundaries. Fans of any kind of rock(except perhaps rap-metal)will find something to appreciate here. From the powerful title track to the heartfelt ballad "Hide your love away" to the zany "Voltage," the CD is a musical and emotional offering that will not disappoint. The band definitely has a spiritual influence in their music(Consider their name; in many Bibles the words of Christ are printed in Red.), but is not overtly Christian. (Bands that come to mind: Creed, Good Charlotte, P.O.D., Evanescence, 12 Stones, Dashboard Confessional, etc.) But the lyrics and tunes of the songs stand without their spiritual undertones in my opinion.
In summary, to see the publicity jump from last year's "Under Starlight ep" (not even sold here on Amazon) to "Burn the Good Ones Down" signifies that these guys are destined for a big future. My advice: Get in on the ground floor. Buy this ep. And buy "Under Starlight" if you must. Really big RLA buffs might check out the 99x Christmas album, which features an RLA tune. (I'm not even quite that big of a fan myself.) In a couple of years when Red Letter Agent mania is sweeping the nation(and it will, it will), impress your friends by pulling out all your RLA CDs and telling them you've been listening for years. That's what I'll be doing...
