Southern Dutchess News, John Darcy
'I Can Stand Alone' begs comparisons with Richard Thompson; 'Fire In Arkansas' recalls the stark sound of Springsteen's 'Nebraska'.
Southern Dutchess News
"Platania has absorbed a subtlety of playing that comes from his years with Van Morrison, Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt."
Album Description
JOHN PLATANIA After spending years as a guitarist for Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Judy Collins, Don McLean, Natalie Merchant and Chip Taylor, the gifted John Platania steps to the front of the stage as vocalist on his first solo outing, LUCKY DOG. John has been a player throughout Van Morrisons musical history from the classic Moondance album to the more recent Philosophers Stone on which he co-wrote two songs.
In 1997, John reunited with Chip Taylor, composer of many hits including two of the biggest in pop music history: Angel Of The Morning and Wild Thing. He and Chip are currently working together on a John Platania instrumental album for Chips Train Wreck Records label.
As a producer, John has helped other artists realize their musical vision. He collaborated with bluesman Guy Davis on his last two CDs for Red House Records.
All songs on LUCKY DOG were interpreted, arranged and produced by John and written by Elwood H. Smith, executive producer on the project.

The second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a "Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog" in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" to match every mood in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The head-snapping reversals of his scores anticipate much later avant-garde music. --Douglas Wolk

The Carl Stalling Project Vols 1 & 2.......2007-01-11
Are the names Mel Blanc, I. Freleng or Chuck Jones familiar to you? Then you will get a charge out of these albums as they remind you of Warner Brothers cartoons you saw. I even used these albums instead of "spooky music" for the trick-or-treaters at Halloween, and got appreciative comments from the parents who recognized the music. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Better Stalling's CD.......2006-05-09
As well as Stalling Project Part I, These recordings are more modern fidelity, less classic and more musical techniques. The improvisations appreciate me more than Part I. I like all tracks especially one from "Zoom and Bored" Salute Maestro!!!!

The Carl Stalling Project Volume 2.......2005-09-12
More music from Warner Brother Cartoons 1936 to 1958.
Carl Stalling was one of the foremost composers of music for cartoons and wrote virtually all of the scores for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. This is a compilation of some complete soundtracks and other snippets. In my opinion, this disk is not quite as well done as "The Carl Stalling Project Volume I."
A nice follow up.......2003-03-09
I really did like the slice-and-dice format of the first disc : I think it helped keep that cartoon zaniness without the visuals. I would recommend both volumes - I listen to them alot while I'm programming!
Now, every time I watch cartoons, I listen to the music!.......2001-08-07
Carl Stalling. We all know who he is, but we don't know that we know. Who is he? The guy who did cartoon background music for Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies for more than 20 years, that's who. Maybe you're thinking, "Oh, come on! Cartoon background music??! How good could something so trivial be?!" The answer to that question is.. VERY. Very entertaining. I just love Carl Stalling's great "scores". When you take away the context of it's being CARTOON music and just sit and listen to the damn thing, it's WONDERFUL music in and of itself! He goes from violins and a piano playing "agitato" simultaneously to a single oboe note and back again in five seconds. Not only that. He does that and, as random as it may sound, he mannages to segue it together beautifully. Now, every time I watch cartoons, the thing I pay most attention to is what aural miracles Mr. Stalling sneaked in. Maybe, after listening to this, you will too. If anything will change after you listen to this, it would be that you'll never think of cartoon music as trivial again........That's a GOOD thing.

Album Description
Lucky 13 delivers sassy and soulful electric and acoustic blues from
Fiona Boyes, the first Australian - and first woman - to win the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. Fiona's magnetic stage presence and infectious smile have charmed audiences both abroad and in the US - she's performed at the W. C. Handy Awards, Chicago Blues Festival, Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise, and Portland's Waterfront Blues Festival.
Recording in Austin TX, Fiona was joined by a full band including special guests
Marcia Ball,
"Steady Rollin'" Bob Margolin, and
Kaz Kazanoff & the Texas Horns to record a tour-de-force of raw acoustic blues, swing, electric blues, rockabilly - and every style of blues in between.
Lucky 13 also showcases Fiona's proficiency as a songwriter - she penned 10 of the 13 songs on the disc. Her understanding of American roots music and clever storytelling distinguishes her songs from records which merely cover blues standards. But this album is not a nostalgic walk through your parents' music collection. Boyes' contemporary sensibilities perfectly mix the soul of the blues in her songs to give this album a thoroughly fresh feel.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Blues Woman.......2007-01-03
I heard Fiona Boyes on XM radio on the blues station and thought she sounded interesting. She is. She's got a growly voice that's just right for the blues and she plays with some of the best - Bob Margolin, Marcia Ball just off the top of my head. Worth the money, buy it and treat yourself.

Joy survives the rejection of Nashville.......1999-07-08
I have been a fan of Joy for a long time now. It's really depressing that she is not more widely known. How is it fair that Shania Twain is so big, when she is so awful? It is even more maddening that the Dixie Chicks cover of lfjldsjfl has become a huge radio hit when it is so inferior to Joy's cover. I was so excited when I got The Lucky Few because of the songwriters, Jim Lauderdale, and Lucinda Williams. Plus the duet with Dwight Yoakam. Pete Anderson was another name that I already knew. The Lucky Few is a must have in any C.D. collection.
A MUST-HAVE ALBUM FOR ANY TRADITIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC FAN.......1999-04-23
Joy Lynn White has been shunned by country radio, but there are a few of us out there that think she should be having number one hits. Joy Lynn's 3rd album, "The Lucky Few" is chock-full of pure, traditional country music. It's a must-have for any fan of pure country. My favorite song is "Too Big For This Town." There's also an excellent duet with Dwight Yoakam.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the redemption of Joy Lynn White.......1999-04-18
After being molded and carted through Nashville's cookie cutter industry, Joy Lynn was dropped from her record deal with Sony Nashville, Lucky for her!! The diva recorded two good but slicky produced albums in Nashville that failed to spawn a hit. She is now signed to an independent label. The record is a classic!!! At times, her voice rings through like a bat out of hell on "Too Big For This Town" (seemingly a take on leaving the Nashville industry). Other times, it oozes pure heartache on tunes such as "I Doubt If It Does To You" and "I Lost It" (an outstanding cover of an old Lucinda Williams tune.) Joy Lynn, like Kelly Willis (another excellent songstress who is now on her own after escaping NAshville, Tennessee)seems to have found herself with an independent record deal. This lattle gal has a voice as big as Texas and it shines through like redemption on the title cut!!1 Buy this record, you won't be sorry
The most incredable voice I have heard in years..........1998-10-28
Joy Lynn White's music lifts my spirits in a way I thought was impossable.. I am a 37 year old man 6' tall and a Bear.. She makes me melt in my shoes///
A great new voice singing original songs!.......1998-08-15
Personally I had not heard of Joy Lynn White before a recent concert with Lucinda Williams but am very glad I have now. She has a very powerful voice and I really enjoy the songs she's selected for this CD. She sang many new songs at the concert and can't wait for new material to be released. I recommend this CD very highly.

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description
Debut solo album from the lead singer of the Tindersticks. This album grew out of a collection of one-off recordings Stuart did at home. Accidental piano loops, old trombone ideas, snippets of rhythms and drones, a recent purchase of an old Lowrey organ all came together with the promise of something new. After years of making beautifully crafted music with the band, he felt more than ready to appreciate the ugly and awkward. Over time each idea asked for more and gradually other players came 'round and helped them along. David Boulter played much of the organ and harmonium, Terry Edwards played the saxes, Thomas Belhom added the drums and Yann Tiersen played the piano on 'She Don't Have To Be Good To Me'. Lucky Dog/Beggars Banquet Records. 2005.

Great Guitar Picker Turns Vocalist!!.......2002-08-01
John Platania, one of my all-time favourite guitar players, now has a vocal/solo CD released after some thirty years in the business.
It's a great mix of styles, all songs written by New York illustrator Elwood H. Smith and arranged by John.
Platania may not be a house-hold name, despite his association with Van Morrison, and being rated by many as the best lead guitar player ever to play in a Morrison band. He may never have a No. 1. But he's produced a CD worthy of a place in anyone's collection.
Great Guitar Picker Turns Vocalist!!.......2002-08-01
John Platania, one of my all-time favourite guitar players, has recently released his first ever solo/vocal CD, and it's worth a listen whatever type of music you prefer.
"Lucky Dog" is a eclectic mix of songs, ramging from the bluesy "I Do Believe" to the country-style "Fire In Arkansas" - the latter featuring Elwood H. Smith, noted New York illustrator, on mandolin.
Elwood has written all of the songs, John has done the arranging, and of course puts his own unique picking to them.
John Platania is not a house-hold name, despite being rated by many as the best-ever lead guitarist to play with Van Morrison. He probably won't ever have a No. 1 on the charts. But he has produced a CD worth a place in anyone's collection.

A 'Lucky Dog' Indeed!.......2002-07-31
Imagine coalescing the diverse talents of Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Randy Newman and Fred Neil into a collection of dynamic renderings of original tunes that captures the essence of blues, folk and rock! Well that's precisely what John Platania single-handedly achieves on his first solo CD outing titled "LUCKY DOG". With a voice that rumbles and purrs like a moody lion and a guitar that rings like an enchanter's harp, Platania becomes the prism through which the confluent light of the aforementioned luminaries is re-focused to amplify the disquieting imagery in 12 songs from the vitriolic pen of composer Elwood H. Smith.
From the infectious melody of the opening track "LUCKY DOG" to the instrumental climax of "I DO BELIEVE", Platania's blues-drenched voice and virtuoso guitar provide the biting elements of fire and ice to compliment such demanding lyrics as: 'Teach a kid to listen with the back of your hand, A hard-core lesson from a hard-... man'. And, "I AM TIME", with its driving rockabilly intensity seems to be a custom-made collaboration for the legendary Buddy Holly's vocal style and Jim Burton's classic guitar riffs, but Platania's double-barreled talent quickly dispels that initial impression to firmly establish this apocalyptic vision as his own haunting masterpiece.
As the title suggests, anyone with the good fortune to have this John Platania debut CD in their music library is a Lucky dog indeed! - Valmore Warren
