As opposed to her earlier albums, this is Ingrids first release not bearing the Flying Neutrinos name. This time around Ingrid is a thoroughly modern rockin' woman, bathed in sunshine, sweet harmony and salty kisses, backed by an excellent aggregation of New Orleans musicians. Ingrid wrote 8 of the 12 songs, their themes overwhelmingly concerned with the bliss of true love. Imagine a happy heroin-free Billie Holiday on the white sands of the Redneck Riviera with a chilled thermos of Cosmopolitans in her picnic basket and you've got the general idea. A very tasteful taste of Chet Atkins emanates from the undertow and suddenly violins flutter above the dunes. The arrival of Chris Isaak hanging ten on a surfboard would not be surprising. Put this disc on next time you contemplate suicide on some dreary winters day and you'll change your mind. The songs are so bright and cheery a dab of SPF 32 sunscreen might be required.     Joseph's Levine's production of Carmina Burana is brilliant. Although most everyone will recognize O Fortuna from "Excalibur" or other Hollywood fare, there is a tremendous depth and power in all of this masterpiece.

    Carl Orff may not have attained "household name" status, but the dazzling "Carmina Burana" has become a staple in the modern classical music repertory. The work has appeared in so many concert halls, recordings, movies, television spots, rock concerts, and presentations that it may rank as one of the twentieth century's most famous classical pieces. And this CD presents a great recording of Orff's most famous work.

    But "Carmina Burana" doesn't always sound like twentieth century music. "O Fortuna", the blaring ominous opener, sounds like a blend of classical, medieval, and modern. And the themes of fortune, Spring, Love (and lust), and drinking sound anything but modern. The latin text doubtless lends a large part of the medieval flavor, but German also appears throughout the song cycle.

    The text comes from a now famous 11th-13th century collection of some 1,000 poems and songs. Historians believe that the "goliards" (wandering freethinking poets) composed these poems, which laid undiscovered until 1803. In the 1930s these secular and sometimes bawdy songs caught the attention of the very Roman Catholic Orff. "Carmina Burana" premiered in Nazi Germany in 1937 to great acclaim (though some found it "degenerate"). Initially written as accompaniment for elaborate theater stagings, the work usually gets performed in concert halls without the visuals. The music definitely warrants such a performance. It stands completely on its own; ranging from the inexorably powerful to the delicate and lovely. Orff pulled out all the stops when he composed this incredible music.

    "O Fortuna" remains justifiably famous with its riveting rhythms and staccato chorus. This tune bookends the entire song collection, suggesting that the work as a whole deals with the ineffable viscissitudes of life. Next, Spring arrives and brings with it dancing (track 6 will get any feet moving), drinking, and the pursuit of sensual pleasures. Though some gain from this happiness, some wallow in misery. "Olim lacus colueram" ("Once I Lived On Lakes") tells a ghastly story from the point of view of a swan roasting on a spit. The tenor solo sings with the perfect amount of agony as the music provides appropriately horrifying accompaniment. "Floret silva nobilis" ("The Noble Woods are Burgeoning") finds a lover bemoaning the parting of her lover. The music punctuates her woe with horse hoof beats fading into the distance. Woes of Fortune and the changes brought with springtime provide the thematic structure for the songs. In the end, the refrain of "O Fortuna" provides a reminder that our pleasures and our misery remain fleeting and subject to the wiles of fortune. Thematically, the piece is timeless.

    James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Chorus and Orchestra pull off quite a performance on this CD. Anyone looking for a solid straight through recording of this famous work will find it here. The CD booklet doesn't give much information on Orff or on the work, but it does contain all of the lyrics in Latin/German and English. Regardless, the music prevails and this recording will not disappoint.

    While Eugen Jochum's definitive recording of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana concentrated on a rustic, unrefined presentation of the miraculous choral hodgepodge, James Levine's modern, Grammy Award-winning 1984 recording gives the hypnotic work a smooth, meticulous treatment. Levine, a notoriously "glossy" conductor, is in excellent form here, taking the twenty-five mini-masterpieces that comprise the work somewhat slower than Jochum with three of the best soloists ever to be recorded.

    The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus are in terrific order. The choral selections (the primitive "Fortune plango vulnera," the jovial "Ecce gratum," the appropriately flowery "Floret silva," and, of course, the calamitous "O Fortuna!") are presented with almost perfect accuracy and calculation. The pacing is only occasionally disappointing; the Tanz, which contains excellently elaborate percussive sections, is taken too quickly and most of the rich subtleties are lost.

    Philip Creech's rendition of the song of the roasting swan, "Olim lacus colueram," is a hilarious and slightly disturbing instance of petrified and bizarre caterwauling. Bernd Weikl, a rather rough-hewn baritone-bass, is a somewhat unsteady but altogether satisfying choice for the baritone soloist. "Ego sum abbas" is definitely his best moment; it is presented accusingly and voraciously, easily juxtaposed to the supercilious ravings and fire-and-brimstone-preaching of a Biblical prophet. June Anderson is simply a treasure as the soprano soloist. Gundula Janowitz, the Jochum soprano, has a less dense, more ethereal voice, which was more fitting for the orgiastic "Stetit puella." However, due to one of Levine's more inspired (and slow) moments, Anderson is able to uncover some of the solo's most invigorating and atmospheric subtleties. She also survives "Dulcissime," a brief but extraordinarily tiring piece that causes most sopranos to languish.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply the best Carmina .......2005-05-03

    When I bought this CD, I expected a beautiful, powerful, austere, haunting, loud piece all rolled into one CD. The CSO, bless their hearts, obliged me here. The brass, as usual are painstakingly precise( as is the chorus when the score calls for staccato passages such as the pianissiomo section on the first track)as seen in tracks such as track 10, the last part of Uf dem Anger. Of course I cannot diminish the other parts of the orchestra but my mind often freezes up when doing these reviews because I have so much I want to say and don't want you to think I'm a babbling idiot. Anyway, really, the only detraction to this recording is the tenor, Creech I believe it is. I find his sqawking irritating( I am speaking specifically of the Roasted Swan Song). I cannot attest to whether that's what Orff actually wanted as another critic here suggests. If that is what Orff wanted, then shame on him. Regardless of that minor flaw, the disc is a proud testament to what happens when Levine meets the CSO.

    Up front, I'm not into folk music, so I'm hardly qualified to judge, except for this anecdote: I heard a song played on Wisconsin Public Radio that snagged my ear so hard I decided to track it down. It was Phil Ochs' "When I'm Gone." I purchased the CD by mail, but then downloaded this particular song from the web, because I couldn't wait to hear it the second time. It is so utterly profound!

    When I tell people I have abandoned the faith of my childhood as inadequate (Christianity), they nearly always ask, like a reflex, "What are you now?" I respond, "Just a very spritual, thinking person." From now on, I should add that if they want to know my spiritual philosophy, it is in this particular song. There are so many things we can do, while we're still here on this planet, that will not only make this place a little better, but will bring us spiritual meaning and a personal sense of fulfillment.

    "But For Fortune" also has a good message. "Here's to the State of Mississippi" was fascinating. But most of these songs will, I'm afraid, collect dust in my computer--only because I'm not much drawn to folk music. I can't deduct stars for that.

    Of all the topical folk singers of the sixties, none surpass Phil Ochs. Whether he's singing about student protests, the horrors of segregation, the U.S. war on Vietnam, police repression, or U.S. intervention in the Americas, his lyrics are always right on target. A much more militant voice for social justice than Dylan or Baez, his legacy has largely been erased. Sadly, while many of the lyrics are about events that took place some forty years ago and politicians who have long been out of office, his songs are just as meaningful today. Just substitute Vietnam for Iraq. For activists new to his music, this cd is the perfect introduction to his work as it is more or less a collection of his greatest hits. It is also an excellent way to learn about the turbulent sixties.

    Writing this on the 30th anniversary of Phil's death (4/9/06
    begs the question of relevancy. How real were his perspectives?
    How meaningful were his observations? Are what he was singing about then make any sense now? I guess it all depends upon one's own point of view, but when looking back at all he said and where we've been, one must suck a breath and gaze upon the sully load through the years that beat us down today. If any relevancy is negated through time, how is it that we gape in wonder at his lyrical splendor and his seeing the emperor's hairless [...] swinging through the air from side to side? Perhaps the idea of fruitless protest persists at his self-imposed demise, or perhpaps the importance of standing tall remains from his struggle. In any, or all situations one picks his/her path and shimmys through the aisles. No doubt, some special thoughts will always remain at his listenning. This album is a a valid stream of thoughts, of timbered melodies, and harrowing lyrics. There are so many samples in the workplace, that this is just one of many. However, it will do for the short term as we continue to question who he really was, what he really did, and what have we become. Give a listen

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Phil Ochs Collection, but missing a few highlights.......2006-02-24

    'There But For Fortune' is an omnibus album of 18 tracks from three important Phil Ochs albums. Unfortunately, 'Pleasures of the Harbor', the album for which I always had the highest regard is not among them.

    Ochs, along with Richard Farina is one of the two great pretenders to Bob Dylan's throne (inherited from Woody Guthrie), as the great American folksong singer / songwriter, after Dylan went electric.

    Unfortunately, both Ochs and Farina died long before they were able to achieve their full potential. It is especially interesting with Ochs to imagine if he would ever outgrow his tendency to write songs which rapidly became dated. In this album, there is an odd mix of references and subjects which are probably totally unfamiliar to young people today, with some other songs, such as 'Cops of the World' which have become remarkably more relevant with recent events.

    In contrast, Dylan's genius was in writing so many great songs which, like many of Guthrie's songs, have all the earmarks of enduring for a long, long time.

    With some caveats, I agree with other reviewers that this is about as good as it gets for Ochs collections. Enjoy them often.

    these phil ochs cd's are like life nowadays, just keep listening to keep your soul and mind from drowning in the absurdity of the times. It's music and poetry for the thinker that will face the pain and reality of being trapped in the situation of being fodder unit for the tyrants.

    I bought this CD to have some authentic English Renaissance music in my collection,
    and fell in love with it. The Earl of Oxford March is particularly appealing.

    The incomparable Canadian Brass make this album a rare treat. From the first notes of Holborne's "Galliard" to the magnificent complexity of Byrd's "Fitzwilliam Suite", their renditions are sheer delight. The music is both relaxing and enjoyably stimulating. Repeated hearings allow the listener to discover some hidden turn or embellishment that was not noticed before, or to appreciate again the antiphonal and complementary interplay of the instruments in the antique harmonies they create. A most enjoyable recording.

    I got this CD quite a while ago, and I still listen to it almost daily. Best at night in a candlelit room while it's raining sipping fine wine and reminising of the Renaissance festival! (wierd, I know. But that's just me) If you have an interest in this time period, you won't regret buying this CD.

    The composers of 16th century England were able to take the music of other countries and produce something uniquely their own. So, too, has Canadian Brass taken English Renaissance music and made it into something wonderfully different. Immediately accessible (and acceptable) to modern ears, these tunes are a splendid treat. Almans and Galliards take on a whole new flavor when done entirely by brass instruments.

    I listen to this CD about once a week while riding to work so that I can keep my sanity. It was a gift from my daughters that keeps on giving.

    Even though Agents of Fortune is one of Blue Oyster Cult's more commercial albums, I can't get enough of it. For one thing, the guitar playing is spectacular throughout the album. Every guitar note is beautiful and haunting. That's what makes Blue Oyster Cult so great- the way they make their music haunting and chilling, while rocking and rolling at the same time.

    I find it odd that the album ends with a country-like tune. It's hard to explain what Blue Oyster Cult does that makes them so great. It's probably their ability to explore different sounds and styles and mix it in with hard rock. They truly are much different than other hard rockers.

    It is unfortunate that Don't Fear the Reaper had to be on this album. Potential new fans picking up Agents of Fortune expecting more of the same must have been disappointed. My first exposure to the Blue Oyster Cult was Spectres, a more solid effort that sent me running to the record store to discover Secret Treaties, and I've been hooked ever since.

    This album marks a major departure for the band in so many respects. While Tyranny and Mutation and Secret Treaties were collaboratively written on the road during a brutal touring schedule that resulted in the amazing On Your Feet or On Your Knees, Agents was written by individual band members at their leisure using multi-track recording equipment in their homes and demo'd for the full band prior to going into the studio. As a result, individual personalities really show through.

    Another notable change is that only one song is credited to the dynamic writing duo of Pearlman/Meltzer (ETI - Pearlman).

    The polished sound of the album is due to their first venture outside of CBS Records' antiquated studios (evident in the otherwise excellent first three albums).

    The final and most evident departure is the marked shift from a raw, heavy-metal sound to a more approachable mainstream sound. Reaper gave the Oyster Boys a taste of commercial success that would elude them for five years until Fire of Unknown Origin and Buck's second hit Burnin' for You.

    Of course, those of you who are longtime BOC fans know that this album was percussionist Gene Frenkle's last, as he tragically died shortly after the album was released. Agents also marks the retirement of Eric's stun guitar. ;)

    Don't Fear the Reaper is a rock masterpiece and deserves all of the acclaim it received. Reaper aside, Agents is not without further merit. Extra Terrestrial Intelligence is a longtime concert staple and This Ain't the Summer of Love is another decent rocker. The two hidden gems on the album are (The Revenge of) Vera Gemini, a Patti Smith penned song which picks up where Baby Ice Dog left off, and Morning Final, another of the many haunting songs from the fertile macabre mind of Joe Bouchard.

    And now to the awful truth. True Confessions, Tenderloin and Debbie Denise are the three worst songs to this point in the BOC's young history. Helen Wheels penned Sinful Love and Tatoo Vampire leave something to be desired as well (God rest her soul). So out of ten songs, you could fashion a solid Side One of an LP and there would be no need to play the flip side. Hardly the greatest album in the BOC catalog as some here would lead you to believe.

    No BOC collection would be complete without Agents of Fortune and there are a handfull of good songs here worth owning, but Secret Treaties, Spectres, Fire of Unknown Origin, and Tyranny and Mutation are more rounded studio albums worth owning before this one.

    Sure the weak spots, especially Tenderloin, Debbie Denise and True Confessions, are numbers BOC fans love to hate, but I realize after listening every day for 3 decades songs like this are among their most sublime. It's finally dawned on me that Debbie Denise is SATIRE. And True Confessions is brilliant, one of the few pure blues numbers the band has bothered with. The scorching horns alone from Randy and Michael Brecker are worth the admission price. Still looking for something to redeem Tenderloin though.

    Anyone who thinks this is a good release from these guys never really listened to the first three. The first was as solid a debut as i've ever heard from a group. The second actually improved on the first. No sophomore slump from them. Two spectacular albums in both writing, musicianship and tone. The third, "Secret Treaties", wasn't necessarily an improvement, but the sound and mixing were a huge leap forward as those first two always sounded like they were recorded from inside a beer can. No slam on "Agents of Fortune" but it does have some weak songs mixed in with the good ones. The previous releases, esp the first two, show the band at their peak: fresh, unhinged, outlandish, funny, wild and flat-out breakthrough rock.

    Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

    The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

    This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

    I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

    I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

    Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

    Switch, INXS's first release since re-fashioning itself as a prime-time reality show spectacle, could earn somebody an A in sociology. A poll of inter-generational hipsters is bound to show that the degree to which you like it correlates directly to your age. The over-30 crowd--those who once shimmied to the late Michael Hutchence's hugely sexy vocal turns on hits such as "Need You Tonight" and "What You Need"--might have a hard time dissing it, mainly because J.D. Fortune succeeds so unswervingly at imitating him. On the other hand... there it is: imitation doesn't always sit well with the generation that recently ripped into Paul Rodgers for parading around stages as Freddy Mercury, and as much as 30-something rock sophisticates will want to relive INXS's heyday, they'll do so suspiciously without Hutchence at the helm. Younger fans, on the other hand--the ones that discovered the band on reality TV--can enjoy J.D. Fortune and co. without reservation, and they will love this disc best. For them, "Devil's Party" (reminiscent of "Original Sin") will arrive without reference, thereby making near-impossible funk-rock coolness seem new. Ditto that effect on "Pretty Vegas," a vampy number co-written by Fortune that owes its guitar riff to "Devil Inside." "Like It or Not" and "Hot Girls," two other standouts, also go a long way toward peeling away the poser tag Hutchence fans may want to affix to Fortune, but may not entirely remove it. For some fans, Hutchence's "Never Tear Us Apart" plea is a personal thing. --Tammy La Gorce

    I was one of those who mourned the death of Michael Hutchence back in the day. Having seen him front the band in concert was an experience that most would have a hard time forgetting and definitely something hard to match. But I recently had the opportunity of seeing them with J.D. Fortune leading the act towards the end of their tour promoting this album. And I admit I was floored.

    The band retains the flavor and power that characterized their sound in the eighties and early nineties. J.D. breathes new life to their classic vocals and finds his space into their new tracks, resulting in an eclectic album that occasionally reminds of their old selves as much as they bring U2 to mind ("Hungry"), while they break special new ground with songs such as the two opening tracks.

    I find myself digging their new presence and sound and bid them a long new life with J.D. singing.

    In the decade of big hair and the trickle-down theory, there was no better rock band hitting the pop charts than INXS. I was a skeptic when the reality series for a new lead singer began and certain Michael Hutchence was irreplaceable even before that, but I stand corrected. One wouldn't even know that a change has taken place when you hear the vocal similarities in frontman J.D. Fortune. The music is also the classic INXS sound with pop melodies and thrashy rock beats from the opening cut of "Devil's Party," to the closing, loving tribute of "God's Top Ten." Now that INXS are back, I only look forward to many more releases in the years to come.

    First and foremost, the legacy of Michael Hutchence is safe and sound and in no way is this album a threat to that. Being a huge fan of INXS for several years, I thought that using a reality TV show to replace their deceased frontman was a huge slap in the face.

    However, as soon as the first vocals are heard on "Switch", you cannot deny the remarkable presence that is heard. Not only does JD Fortune sound eerily like his predecessor, but the overall sound of INXS is in tact and this album is an impressive rebirth. It's hard to find an actual "bad" song on this album. The opening half of the album sounds almost as if the spirit of Michael was present in its making.

    Anyone can try and tear this album to pieces and critique the new vocalist here, but the plain truth is that INXS has been rejuvenated and they sound as good as they ever did. Most importantly, they've made an album that Michael would be proud of.

    For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.

    The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.

    Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.

    This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.

    Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

    I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.

    I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.

    Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.

    The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.

    Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

    Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive.     It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

    Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

    Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
    but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
    Yet it somehow disappoints.
    I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
    that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
    But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
    the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
    It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
    There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
    for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
    It just should have had more flavor.

    I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

    A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

    Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

    Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

    Wow. Alana just has a voice thats...... Smokey. Like huskey, but sweeter and more sexy. And the almost efortless way she slides through songs is amazeing. This CD seemed to alternate from up-beat tempos, to soft, sad balads. All with her mix of jazz, R&B, and a little regae. Truely a wonderful album. I didn't even like some of the songs the first time around, but they've grown on me wonderfully, and I now listen to them when my soul is in need of soothing. She has a way of just letting your mind wander as you listen to her music, something that really helps after a long day or on the car ride home. A wonderful CD everyone should have a shot at once.

    Why don't more people know about Alana?

    I fell head-over-heels in love with Alana's voice and sound on her debut album "Blame It On Me" and was ecstatic when I bought this one. I must admit that I wasn't initially as into it as "Blame It On Me" and set it aside for a year of two after a few listens. When I came back to it a year or so ago, I clearly heard what I had been missing before. Wow, so amazing! This album is quite a bit more mature and sophisticated than her first, as might be expected. Her sexy, smoky, wistful sound permeates every song. You get a little bit of sass on a few of the songs as well, including "How Many of Us Have Them (Friends)" and "Bye Bye".

    One song that really connects the sound of "Blame It On Me" to this album is the beautiful song "I Want You". So sweet, so sexy. And the lyrics!

    No apology because my urge is genuine
    And the mystery of opposites attacting
    Here I am and I want to take a hit
    of your scent and it bit
    so deep into my soul

    So great!

    There is not a single miss on the CD for me but there are definitely some standouts such as "I Want You", "When You Became King", "How Many of Us Have Them (Friends)", "Bye Bye", and "God of Love".

    Alana is such an amazing talent. It's a shame that more people don't know of her. I guess that shouldn't be much of a surprise, though, considering the rather talentless wonders that dominate the airwaves and video channels. Too bad, just more of her for the rest of us who appreciate her!

    I highly recommend this album as well as Alans's first. I hate to admit that I haven't checked out her third one yet, but will do so very soon.

    Alana Davis has an amazing range and doesn't produce music that sounds the same from one track to the next. Her musical compositions vary as well as the story lines of her lyrics. I purchased Blame it on Me as a gamble and was first in line for her next albumn. I was fortunate enough to see her live and she is like James Taylor - needs nothing but her voice and guitar to sound perfect.
