In the mid to late '70s, director Francis Ford Coppola put his career on the line to complete Apocalypse Now, his quixotic attempt to variously document, deconstruct, and mythologize America's military involvement in Vietnam. The end result was a troubling masterpiece and technical tour de force whose use of sound and music influenced films for decades. As originally released, the soundtrack album was equally groundbreaking: an intriguing, dreamlike collage of dialogue, sound effects, and music that both evoked the film's artistic sensibility and underscored the innovative, Academy Award®-winning efforts of sound designer Walter Murch.
Two decades later, Coppola revisited the project, adding nearly an hour of previously unseen footage and revamping its soundtrack release as well. But while the film may have taken on fresh new dimensions, the new soundtrack album seems stripped of virtually all of Murch's key contributions. What remains is primarily music--and a telling argument for the notion that the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts. Inspired by synthesist Isao Tomita's '70s classical adaptations, Coppola hired father Carmine to write an orchestra score, and then set about synthesizing it. The Doors' "The End" remains an iconic touchstone, but removed from the context of the film (and its original album release), much of the Coppola music all too clearly reveals its inspirations (Tomita, Holst, Wagner, Stravinsky) and the technical limitations of the relatively primitive synth technology involved (mirrored in a pair of newly recorded tracks as well). --Jerry McCulley

Apocalypse Here and Now.......2005-08-07
I, too, like the other reviewers, had the original soundtrack recording (on 2 cassettes!) I enjoyed listening to it in the dark of my New York City apartment to re-experience the film and to also learn the dialogue.
However, when the Redux version came out on DVD, I also was looking forward to a newer re-issue of the soundtrack that highlighted the music and left the dialogue out.
I find the synthesized passages and some acoustic instrumentation in their impressive for their time surround sound-like quality quite amazing. The inclusion of the finale where Martin Sheen's character steps out in his "transformed assassin shadow glory" haunting and very moving. It is one of the great moments in modern cinema and in music soundtracks.
The only confusing aspect, which I eventually was able to figure out, was why this soundtrack did not include the really cool and disturbing end credits music. Then I learned that that piece and the others like it used throughout the film were recorded separately on a CD entitled, "The Apocalypse Now Sessions" by the Rhythm Devils. The end credits music appears on the end of that disc on the final track entitled "Napalm for Breakfast." Both these discs make an all around great soundtrack for what I judge as one of the great cinematic works of art.
Love the movie but hate this sound track.......2005-05-05
The sound quality sucked.... when i listen to it it seems like it can't be the REAL music from the movie.
The tracks were unnecessarily short, I understand that some of the music in the movie repeated at times, but it was still unnecessarily short. The transition from Valkyries to Suzie Q is almost as horrible as the version of Suzie Q they use in this.
The opening is okay. The ride of the Valkyries is good while it lasts. Don't waste your money on this. Just buy the songs on other CDs.
Apocolypse: Noun.......2004-06-02
Instead of paying $3.99 for a CD featuring "Ride of the Valkyries" I bought this whole CD. It was actually a gift for my Father. I think perhaps it might be improved with the addition of more songs from the era that evoke the sense of futility and dread conjured by the film itself...thus expanding the CD play time to equal the length of the Redux...which was in turn only marginally shorter than the actual war. Not necessarily songs INCLUDED in the film, but rather music you know the guys were listening too. All in all, however, it is almost worth the price...it puts you in the same place as the movie, and that's worth something.
Like Napalm in the Morning.......2003-07-31
This is an excellent CD and one that I've wanted for many years. I, like others who've reviewed the "Redux" CD, once had the soundtrack from the _original_ version of the movie, which was basically the entire movie, complete with all dialogue. I liked that "soundtrack," but what I really wanted was _only_ the music, without dialogue, because if I really wanted the dialogue I'd just as soon watch the movie. Fortunately, the "Redux" CD does indeed have _only_ the music, which is eerily beautiful and haunting. I should point out to potential buyers, as I didn't learn this until I actually listened to the CD, that the version of The Doors' "The End" is actually the interesting remix heard in the movie, complete with synthesizer enhancements, chirping jungle crickets, and Jim Morrison's Oedipal vulgarities brought to the surface, instead of buried under the instrumentation as on The Doors original recording (in which the vulgarities can barely be heard). "Suzie Q" sounds to me an awful lot like the version in the movie, though I'm unsure it's exactly the same; it doesn't matter, it's so darn close. What's really nifty is the intro and conclusion of "Suzie Q," which contains the synthesizer effects heard in the movie as a sort of musical segway. In short, if you love "Apocalypse Now," and what you want is _the music_ from the movie, this CD is perfect. To my ears, the music doesn't sound dated at all; it could've been done yesterday for a new movie.
eerie and forboding..........2001-12-17
I've noticed some griping that this new version of the soundtrack does not contain dialogue, unlike the original 2 disc version that came out originally. well, you can't please everybody. one of my other favourite soundtracks, "Blade Runner" often gets slagged in reviews because it contains some dialogue, which some people find intrusive. if you want to hear the dialogue, watch the movie. this disc is about the music, which is as dark and forbidding as any synth music i've heard, perfectly evoking the chaos and hellish atmosphere shown on screen. track seven, "nung river" has a particularly sinister feel, making that trip up river feel inexorable. "do lung" has a nightmarish carnival sound to it, appropriate to the scene's images of a place spiralling out of control. overall, if you like dark, atmospheric soundtrack music, (it is also very rhythmic) you will enjoy this, even if you haven't seen the movie.

This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of "themes" from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers whose juicy melodies and swooping orchestrations are appropriate to the medium, while William Walton was a "serious" composer whose style retained its austerity in his film music. Two single slow movements, from Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, and from Brahms's Third Violin Sonata, make one yearn for more. The latter is the only piece on the disc that can reasonably be called "classical;" as for the "rhapsodic" part of the title, it is certainly justified by the performances. Perlman plays everything, whether by Brahms or John Williams, with the same concentration, commitment, and emotional intensity. His expressiveness is always noble and so genuine that there is never a moment of sentimentality or condescension. The program gives him little chance to display his virtuosity, but shows off his glorious tone in all its variety, warmth, and radiance; the climaxes soar with rapturous ecstasy. His partners and accompanying orchestras could not be better. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest .......2007-06-11
Once in a very great while, God creates a musician who even He is in awe of. Itzhak Perlman is simply the greatest violinist who has ever lived. His Violin Concerto (Beethoven) is perhaps the greatest ever recorded, while here his violin expresses the joys and horrors of Cinema Paradiso and Shindler's List, themes not to be missed by anyone.
Enchanting, moving, Perlman is magic!.......2005-04-21
I played the violin growing up and could never imagine it could be played as
beautifully as Perlman can play it. He is unequalled as far as I'm concerned,
but anyone would enjoy this album as it has wonderfully memorable show
tunes like Cinema Paradiso and Schindler's List and the most beautiful
rendition ever of Michel Legrand's If It takes forever, I will wait for you
from UMBRELLAS of CHERBOURG.
It stays in my car CD player where I enjoy it over and over!

It's just a bunch of drums........2002-09-16
When I first bought this album it was in '83 in a used record
store in Frederick MD, down on Market st. I asked the guy behind
the counter if I could hear a cut and he said, "It's just a bunch
of drums." Later when I went back to CO I put it on for my mates
very early one morning and it was probably one of the coolest
albums we had ever heard. Truly scary. It will have you in it's
grip until it blows you up softly. I think Mickey Hart is pretty
much running the show on this one. Hells Bells.

Let this CD take you to the jungle. Mickey Hart and Co. use pecussion to help you with that trip.
Too bad this is such a short album, because the rhythms are so awe-inspiring! You just don't want the album to stop! I can't believe I'm hearing this!
Only the Rhythm Devils (and Mickey Hart in particular) can evoke the images of places that you can travel to while listening. It is hard to describe but his percussion arrangements with the other famous musicans around the world does this!
Check out the closing track - Napalm for Breakfast to test your stereo speakers.
Just an awesome album. Mickey will continue making superb albums that will take the listener to other places and beyond!
Hart's best, but, another update sure would be nice........2000-08-28
One of the best percussion records ever (as someone pointed out earlier) got a little bit better when released on CD. The technically excellent recording was finally unshackled from a horrible vinyl pressing. Previously unreleased material was added to this release, and some resequencing was done, bringing a short running time out to a little over 38 minutes.
The music is absolutely stunning. This is real-time scoring work, with the Dead's backline getting a lot of help from their friends (including Airto and Flora). This is primal, unforced, experimental, and raw, making for a listening experience unlike any other. The insert is informative, with insights into the creation of the music, and including a fair amount of technical detail on the recording and mastering processes.
While "Napalm For Breakfast" will be a brutal low frequency response test of you system, it's time for another update. At a minimum, a two channel, 24/96 & 24/192 Classic Records release.
A very acquired taste, and very recommended.
Best persussion CD Ever!.......1999-12-01
The Rhythm Devils are true genuises. I bought this CD years ago, but just brought it back out into my rotation. No one else could have captured the feeling of the movie except for Mickey Hart. This is my favorite Hart CD. Truly a classic.

Pere Ubu - 'Apocalypse Now' (Thirsty Ear).......2004-10-01
Since I've heard a few people here and there rant and rave about Pere Ubu,I thought maybe it'd be good to check the band out for myself.'Apocalypse Now' is a fourteen track disc that was recorded live at a small club,Shuba's in Chicago in front of a VERY enthusiastic crowd that took place on December 7,1991.Tunes that I dug the most were the somewhat humorous "Spontaneous Simultude",the well written "Wine Dark Sparks","Worlds In Collision" and "Non Alignment Pact".What makes Pere Ubu so specail?David Thomas's fine vocals, the stellar acoustic guitar playing and their use of a slightly out-of-tune piano. One thing for sure,'Apocalypse Now' SURE has that feel-like-you're-there vibe to it.See for yourself.
Never underestimate Pere Ubu !.......2000-01-18
This is a marvelous piece of work. It is my experience that 99.9% of all live albums are miserable, so this recording is all the more remarkable. David Thomas shines in this performance. While the cover of Iggy Pop's "I Wanna be your Dog" is a pleasant surprise, the pieces de resistance are the "Modern Dance" selections. This is a must buy for all Pere Ubu fans. After listening, truly you will wish you were there...
Nice live set from the pop years.......1999-12-18
Taken from what I think they called "The Kindness of Strangers" tour in 1991 (it was backed by an anonymous donor), this is a live set of 14 songs; many of them are from the very pop-oriented Worlds In Collision. The sound is adequate; the David Thomas banter shines as usual. I would have liked a few more noisy Pere Ubu tracks, but this is a great reminder that you should never miss a live Ubu show if given the rare opportunity. (PS - I saw the tour's Washington, DC show; Pere Ubu opened up for the terse Pixies and easily stole the show.)

Customer Reviews:
Excellent music.......2007-01-16
For anyone who loves punk, this is a great cd. I had heard the song Little Fingers a long time ago and couldn't remember the band's name, until now!
Microstars Save the Day.......2004-03-02
Apocalypse Hoboken is a band I was gradually introduced to a few years back. Sadly, I didn't fully realize how amazing they were until after they disbanded and the final show had passed. Luckily, they reformed this past Novemeber at the Metro in Chicago for one final show, which I was able to attend. Probably the best show of my life. They played a bit more off of Microstars than I expected, as this release seems to be something of a black sheep for them amongst many people.
Microstars is just such a breath of fresh air in nearly every respect. I'm a huge AH fan and while this LP definitely goes for a different style, it is in no way a let down or disappointment. In fact, I think it acts to the contrary. Microstars showed more pure talent and layering than all of their other releases, in my opinion. That's saying quite a lot, I think, because if you really listen to AH you can see how damn good they are on their older material as well.
The opening track may be familiar to people in Chicago, even if they don't know of AH. It was played on Q101 several times as it was part of one of their local compilation CDs. Some other songs off of this disc were also played live on the station. That track is Little Fingers and it's definitely the most catchy of the lot. If anything, it proves how accessible this CD can be while still staying true to AH's roots and general subject matter in the past. It's not a massive departure and kind of reminds me of Monchichi off of House of the Rising.
The next three songs are just as fast and intense as most anything you'd come to expect from AH. The main difference seems to be how well layered and melodic it is. Make Them Die Slowly follows these and shows a more melancholic side of the band. This isn't the only slower song on the CD and while not entirely expected, it definitely fits with the rest of the album and is very well played.
This also contains what is possibly one of the best Prince covers I've ever heard: Darling Nikki. While it perhaps doesn't have the strange sexuality that Prince exhibits in his version, I feel it's superior in nearly every way... and I'm trying to be objective as I love Prince heh.
This is definitely something to check out, regardless of whether or not you love AH's previous material. If you have a mindset that AH should never evolve or that the old stuff is always best, this might not be for you -- but you never know. It's a shame they had to break up, but at least they went out on a high note.
ok.......2003-10-14
you like hoboken you probally like the vindictives punk rock
Truly few, micro stars.......2001-05-02
As a long time AH fan, I picked up this album with incredible anticipation. I was totally and thoroughly disapointed. Not to say that this not a good CD, just not what I expected. Nothing like "Complex Instructions..." or "Superincredible..." Their new sound appeals more to some than others. It just didn't seem to agree with me like a bad burrito or something. Yet, there still are a few good songs here and it wouldn't be a waste of money picking this up.
What every kid should want for Christmas.......2000-06-10
Apocolypse Hoboken has long been a pillar of the chicago punk rock community, and with their latest release, microstars, they once again prove that innovation and a raw edge is possible in a punk rock industry that has become as muddled as the once God like Alternative music scene. The albums is seen as a departure from AH's traditional style, (as seen in albums like Inverse, Perverse, Reverse, and superincredibleheaveydutydudes) but what comes out of the new style is an album that is catchy, angry, moody, and at times a bit melancholy, as is seen with the track "make them die slowly". The alubum begins with the incredibly catchy "Little Fingers" a song that is part punk rock part baptist revival gone horribly wrong. It continues on spitting out great tracks like the angry anthem "Summer Assault". Then plundges into a lyrical puzzle in tracks like "Microstars". AH did redifne their sound here its true, but for anyone who has listend to them, listens to punk, or just good music this is a perfect album. After all Todd sings Princes "Darling Nicky" like it was truley meant to be sung.
