As these dimpled moptops from Oklahoma grow pepper-bearded and transform into wizened elder statesmen of sonic adventuring, the heartfelt candy of their loving bubblegum stretches ever longer into echoing soundscapes. If Radiohead are halfway to becoming U2, the Flaming Lips are nine-tenths of the way to pop nirvana. Hardly a song on Yoshimi isn't resonated, echoed, and reverberated--floating the listener higher until they have the ultimate bird's-eye view of what makes a great band tick. As with any album by the band, it's hard not to imagine parades and a sky filled with helium balloons while you listen to any of it--in this case, the party is enhanced brilliantly by digital filters and silver shimmering asides. The most immediate songs, like "One More Robot (3000-21)," are digital (almost trip-hop) dance numbers that lift the band out of the cornfields and into the loopy land of Björk. Little surprise, then, that the band are already following up this majestic splash of gummy bear brilliance by recording a CD with kids' TV show host Steve from Blue's Clues. It's like Woodstock meets Snoopy! --Ian Christe

5 out of 5 stars But the moment never came..........2007-06-19

that I was disappointed in any track on this album! I haven't had too much exposure to TFL but had to buy this album from having heard "Do You Realize" and seen the album cover and title. Irresistible. I hear something new each time I listen - fave tracks include "Fight Test", "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" and "All We Have is Now". Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Flaming Lips - A Tripped Out Gem.......2007-03-02

Up until a few years ago my only exposure to The Flaming Lips was that horrible single "Vaseline" (or whatever it was called) that got a ton of radio airplay back in the late 90's. I really really really hated that song and totally wrote this band off. Then in early 2003 I kept seeing this "Yoshimi" album pop up on a lot of people's "best album of the year" lists for 2002. After reading reviews and talking to others who had it I finally decided to pick it up and give this band a chance. I can happily say that I am glad I did. This is a fantastic album and one that does not easily fit into any easy categories. The album is a mix of psychedilea, electronica, pure pop, and progressive rock. It is really different from anything else I have in my music collection. The whole album flows together seamlessly in a dreamy floating way. The lyrics tell the loose story of a girl named Yoshimi who is fighting against evil robots. The first four songs pretty much follow the story line and then the material kind of drifts away from it. All of the songs on the album are great from the opening "Flight Test" through the instrumental closer "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon". It is all a tripy fantasy ride that takes the listener to a dreamy sci fi world. I don't own any other Lips albums, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but if I definitely need to explore more from this band.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Album.......2007-02-19

Never heard of the Flaming Lips, one of rock's most unusual acts hailing from of all places, Oklahoma City, OK? Unbelievably, the band is nearing their 25Th anniversary. Their career is a long storied one, filled with bizarre tales, wildly ambitious projects, and a decent turnover of musicians. The band's sound certainly has changed over the years. While front man and co-founder, Wayne Coyne, says that the Lips are in their final incarnation, that doesn't mean that their genius won't continue on. Wayne, Steven Drozd, and Michael Ivins still have alot to say and they keep finding the most fascinating ways to say it. One could buy any one of the last three lips albums, "Yoshimi," "The Soft Bulletin," and 2006's effort "At War With the Mystics," and have an excellent album on their hands. I'm particularly fond of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

The Lips music blends addictive pop sensibility, smart earnest lyrics, with a huge assortment of sounds. The music is at the same time overtly psychedelic and tenderly melodic, without ever being abrasive or unfocused. While all the Lips albums are in a sense concept albums, Yoshimi's story and sound could be the most cohesive. It's easy to suggest 911 played a role in the subtext of this album. The same goes for the Iraq war in the equally brilliant "At War with the Mystics." Both albums, despite employing a political subtext, are irresistably catchy. If you've never heard the Lips, Yoshimi's first three songs might be best thing you've heard in years. The story of Yoshimi starts to become more abstract after Pt 2 but the remaining songs are nothing short of genius. One particular highlight is "Do You Realize." The orchestral sound combined with simple, off the cuff, yet surprisingly poignant and heartfelt lyrics is like a dose of the sweetest most heavenly gooseberry pie you'll ever taste. No really. Do You Realize doesn't ask as much from its audience as say, "Imagine," but its bittersweet message is just as grandious.

In a nutshell, The Lips are making some of the most breathtaking music around. If you haven't heard their stuff or seen one of their legendary shows you're missing out big time. Pick it up, the whole family will love the Flaming Lips. I Promise!

5 out of 5 stars Bought this today and I love it and not 13 it's just easier........2006-12-14

It took me a while to delve into the Lips. They are good and great to listen to but they won't surpass Beck on my playlist if the mood calls for Beck. Anyway, I got into the Lips thanks to this wonderful girl I met when I started college. She invited me to her dorm and asked if I heard of the Flaming Lips, I had heard of them at the time but never listened to them. I was amazed at what I was hearing when she put the CD in. This album is just spacey and dreamy, very nice to listen to when you are in a good mood. I bought At War with the Mystics and somewhat liked it, but when said girl loaned me Yoshimi I loved it and made a note to buy it. Overall, very enjoyable and a great album to sing along to with the girls especially Do You Realzie??

4 out of 5 stars good album!.......2006-11-05

I liked it a lot. a combination of soft/hard and electronic/melodic. If you like to flow into thoughts about different worlds it also works very well...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my favorite flaming lips album.......2007-05-22

i am a huge fan of the flaming lips, and i must say that this is my favorite album. i think this is probably the only flaming lips album that is completely perfect. every song on this album is just absolutely amazing. and the dvd disc is awesome, some really good songs on it that you couldnt hear elsewhere. deffinately buy this. id say even if you have this album already, you should still buy this special edition just to hear it in surround, and to hear the bonus songs, its still worth it to buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars Taken a chance here..........2007-04-02

...but it was well worth it. Never heard these guys before, but heard good reviews of this...I mean, come on...pink robots???? But clever lyrics and an astounding 5.1 sound, it really grows on you with time. Now I listen to it to unwind and really love it's fresh sound and Waynes mellow vocals. Very aggressive surround...but quite enjoyable. And this is from a guy who love Bach!

4 out of 5 stars 5.1 mix is a bit gimmicky...but still worth it.......2005-06-30

I love the album. And the 5.1 mix is enjoyable. But it strikes me as a bit gimmicky. Sure, it shows off sound coming from every direction, but it doesn't sound natural enough to me. If you read the liner notes that come with the album, for example, you'll see that on one track, they simply move the sound around the room in a clockwise direction. On another the bass moves around on every single note. It's almost like they had some presets they could program in rather than really looking at the music and thinking about what would sound best. Rather it sounds like they're "playing". Not that it's a bad mix. The Lips have a quirky sound, so a slightly quirky mix is not all bad. If something like a Led Zeppelin album were mixed like this, it would be awful. Since it's the Lips, it works okay.

But simply moving the audio around the room quickly or on every note does *not* make an "awesome" mix.

5 out of 5 stars Surround Masterpiece.......2005-06-09

Now this is the reason I have spent so much on surround equipment over the years! This is just wonderful. Summertime and Do You Realize alone are worth the price. Just buy this, you will not be sorry. The guys really know what they are doing, and it's one of my favorite surround recordings to date.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be engulfed in the music of the Flaming Lips.......2005-02-22

This is one of those great albums that comes every once a year. A MUST HAVE CD/DVD set. Not only is this a great album, it is also far superior due to the 5.1 surround audio on the DVD. When you listen to this in the 5.1 audio, be prepared, this music will swallow you up and swish you in its mouth. It is AMAZING! You will feel as if you are in another world with spacey sounds, swirling drumkits, crazy synths, oh and of course the Flaming Lips behind it all. This is truly the only way (5.1) to listen to music. AND AN EVEN MORE EXTRA BONUS is the CRAZY ANIMATIONS THAT DANCE TO THE MUSIC on the DVD. Its incredibly mind-blowing to watch and listen. The Flaming Lips have a masterpiece of music and animations on this CD/DVD album. Ear Candy tracks include: "In the Morning of Magicians", "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell", "Fight Test", and "Are you a Hypnotist??".

4 out of 5 stars Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24

This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

hardly worth buying since you can get the remix on fight test now, but the japanese version is kinda funny to listen to once or twice. glad i have it for my collection, but not for the casual lips fan.

5 out of 5 stars Is one song worth $27.51??????.......2002-08-06

    Is one song worth $27.51?

Short answer: No, unless you have money to blow.

Long answer: The only extra track on this album is track #12 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1-Bonus' which is the exact same song as track #3 except that Wayne sings it in Japanese. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice track and pretty darn interesting. Picture a good ol' Oklahoma boy singing in Japanese, it's got to be a first. However, it just doesn't seem worth the extra cost unless your an obsessive collector. There are plenty of ways to get this track without having to spend crazy money (hint - Yahoo keywords: flaming lips trading post - "FTP".)Just make sure you do the honorable thing and at the very least BUY THE PROPER US RELEASE, these guys need/deserve your support. Yoshimi is a great record made by one of the greatest bands ever, hence the 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Yoshimi (AOL sessions) only reason to get this.......2004-03-09

The cover of "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is nifty, but all together empty, they only "cover" the chorus, singing "I can't get you out of my head, boy your love is all I think about, la la la..." (though that is all there really is to the song I guess), and then there's instruments building up, and then they repeat, that's really it for 3 minutes. Just listen to the sample on amazon's Fight Test EP page, that's really all there is to the song, except you get 2 and a half minutes more of it. But the alt version of Yoshimi is fantastic, I prefer it over the original by a wide margin. This is a neat lil single, but not at the import prices.

5 out of 5 stars awesome alt. version.......2003-04-24

though you can get can't get you out of my head on fight test now, the alt. version of yoshimi is great. a must-hear for all lips fans.
