The Drums of War

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Founder Steven K. Smith has been active since the early 1990's in various musical projects ranging from industrial, punk, and ambient. The Daye of Skye project was started in early 1999 after a several year hiatus in which Smith was concentrating on his visual art and installation work. His current work with Daye of Skye is exploring the use of polyrhythms, noise, and traditional instrumentation with experimentation."The Drums of War" is the first full length release from Daye of Skye.

Album Description
"The Drums of War" is a sonic journey from tribal polyryhtms to walls of dense guitars and drones. Daye of Skye combines the ethnic with the experimental, creating a devastating yet beautiful sound experience.. The album which took 3 1/2 years to record, went through many mixes and interpretations. The final result is the "wall of sound" which defines the album.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Product Description

Fife & Drum Music inspired and entertained Americans throughout the 1800s, whether in a military camp or a village Fourth of July celebration. This unique recording captures the spirited music in the natural outdoor environment of a remote farmstead. Many of these tunes have never before been recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Great Heritage Music CD.......2007-03-09

How can anyone pass up a chance to listen to a song titled "Go To The Devil and Shake Yourself" - the title track to this fife and drum CD? These fellows present a historically accurate representation of what soldiers and civilians alike would have heard in 19th Century America both on the battlefield and during concerts around the campfires of Civil War regiments and back home on band stands. This is music that makes people stop and think what entertainment can be when mixed with an appreciation of history. Get this CD, pop it in the player while traveling around the nation thinking about the history of the 19th century when the United States became what it is today.

    5 out of 5 stars Sentimental Favorite.......2006-11-30

My parents purchased this album back in the sixties, and I grew up listening to it. For this reason alone I love it. Even after all this time I still love these arrangements. Mr. Gould's orchestra give polished performances, the tone colors are varied and vivid. You will be carried to exotic locales by this music. It's a classic!

    5 out of 5 stars Jungle Fun.......2005-11-23

More soothing renditions by Morton Gould and composer Ernesto Lecuona. "Andalucia" is simply beautiful on this album. It has a strong melody that would sound good in almost any setting. My daughter brought this in for her second grade class, and most of the kids an parents liked the music. Some of it is very cinematic, and I think that's what some of them reacted too...made then think of old films. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars interesting change of pace.......2003-11-06

I had originally purchased this CD because I thought the music was similar to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman (I made this assumption based on the picture on the jacket). I thought it was another "exotica" album. Boy, was I wrong! While the arrangements all have lush melodies, the music is symphonic in nature and have great orchestral arrangements. I like this CD a lot.

5 out of 5 stars An Astounding Listening Experience.......2002-03-31

This is the 1944 studio recording of the legendary stage production of "Othello" which starred Robeson & Ferrer.
Both of their interpretations may be a little more declamatory than modern tastes are accustomed to, but there is no doubt as to their effectiveness, variety and power. As to Uta Hagen's Desdemona: wonderful. The recording itself is of excellent quality - the balance captures the full mid-range and depth of Robeson's formidable bass and Ferrer's sinuous baritone. The mastering more than does justice to it and is from nearly pristine sources. In brief: If your curiosity is at all piqued by this disc you should get it, no question. Listen to it with the lights out and bask in the sheer glory - especially Act II, scene III and the final scene.

4 out of 5 stars Good music to have a bonfire to!.......2006-03-23

I am a huge Mabou fan so I decided to check out Steve Smith's early project. You can tell it's him (because of the intense drums) but this project is very different. There are vocals and more condesed song structures. I have to say this is one unique record and I can't think of any obvious comparisons. I enjoy Mabou more but I really like to see how artists evolve thier sound over time. Very interesting...

      5 out of 5 stars This rules!.......2004-03-02

I really love this disc. It's kinda like Jesus and Mary Chain meet Crash Worship! I can't think of any band that has combined these sounds together! I really like the ethnic experimention of sounds with the rock guitars. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars a great surprise from italy.......2004-02-02

I decided to buy this cd mainly because I was attracted by the cover and the inner artwork, but only when I inserted the disc in the cd player I realized that my hard-earned bucks had been spent wisely. What an experience! The album is a masterwork of new-school hardcore, unrelentingly intense, highly technical and played as if their lives depended on it. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the album, however, is a tragic and awesome beautry which is expressed with deep and surprisingly well written lyrics, especially considering that english is not the bands native tongue.
This is completely uncompromising from start to finish, not even the time to catch a breath, it's a full on sonic assault from start to finish and one which even if you do not appreciate the music from, you can not fail to respect in terms of its sheer power and technical prowess of its authors. Absolutely mindblowing, Banging the Drums of War is a worthy addition to any record collection, although be warned, that this is a heavy and thought-provoking experience.
The vegan straight edge has a name now, and that name is PURIFICATION.

          5 out of 5 stars holy war.......2004-01-22

I decided to buy this cd last november, right after having seen Purification during their japanese tour. I was blown away by their live set and so I decided to give them a try. It was a smart move, and banging the drums of war is one of the finest moments in nowadays hardcore. Purification is totally awesome, they have excellent music, great vocals and a great message too. I think that they are actually one of the best hardcore bands around.

          5 out of 5 stars Bellissimo!.......2004-01-16

I love this cd. It is amazing. If you like true and sincere hardcore then get it. Purification put the full stop to breakneck metalcore with this already classic release. 8 tracks surge by in just 25 minutes or so, seeking to cripple your hearing with their uncompromising heaviness and all-out aggression.
What hardcore should be all about.

          5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2003-10-06

Before buying this CD I was not too sure on what to expect from it, but the band's fame and the fine artwork made me take the right decision: I bought it. I had some fears that Purification could have be only the next clone in a neverending list of band playing unoriginal and cheap metalcore. How wrong I was in thinking so. This is as good, intelligent and sincere as hardcore ever gets. The music never stops to take a breath; the vocals never return to anything less than blood-curdling. The lyrics never compromise. This disc is an inspiration for all people who put their beliefs before themselves. What you get is vegan straight edge mayhem at its best. "Banging the drums of war" can now be lined along with the other masterpieces of the style: Day of Suffering's "The eternal jihad", Earth Crisis's "Destroy the machine" or Raid's "Above the law". They even re-recorded "Holy War", which I prefer in the older version, but apart from that this CD is a sure winner and a must for all fans of new school hardcore (Hatebreed, etc.). I'll shut up now, buy the album and let it speak for itself.

5 out of 5 stars Purification rock my world.......2003-10-01

What can I say? I got this album yesterday and have already listened to the whole thing ten times. The lyrics are incredibly good. His voice will send a shiver down your spine. The innerworkings of the music totally blow my mind. In my opinion, this is one of the best hardcore bands in existance. And what gets me, is that these guys were around during the beginning of the hardcore movement, yet they sound so much more experienced than any of the bands of that time.
For fans of: Merauder, All Out War, Madball, Shai Hulud and Throwdown.
