Filter's third album was inspired by a cross-country trip that imbued lead singer Rich Patrick with patriotism and appreciation for both the diversity and sense of freedom he found out on the road. While the recording is purported to be a celebration of that diversity, most of the record hasn't strayed much from the alt-metal template that Filter cut their teeth on back with their 1995 debut. Here are the same teeth-gnashing rants, scatter-gun drumming, and claustrophobic soundscapes that inhabited their first two albums. Patrick, however, has eschewed much of his trademark bloodcurdling screaming in favor of a lush vocal style that would suit an '80s New Romantic frontman. Though it's oddly an industrial band, Filter's best songs almost qualify as power ballads. The gorgeous melodies and moody lyrics of "The Missing" (written on September 11) and the psychedelic pop of "The Only Way Is the Wrong Way" owe more to Smashing Pumpkins than Nine Inch Nails. But even the jarring "American Cliché" and the ragged, downcast "Where Do We Go from Here" veer closer to pop than anything that appeared on the first two albums. The Amalgamut ultimately is a sophisticated and intelligent pop-metal hybrid. --Jaan Uhelszki

About as dynamic as a coffee filter .......2006-10-19
I bought this CD as sort of a blind buy off Dell's Musicmatch service last year. I'd heard "Where Do We Go From Here" back when it was getting regular airplay, and parts of some songs sounded good, so I bought the whole CD. I can't say this was the best idea.
The problem with this album as others have pointed out is Filter doesn't know whether to totally rock out or create the softer, catchy tunes that have served them well over the years. The songs alternate from soft to hard "industrial" (I still don't get this description) rock, and most of the harder stuff falls flat. The lyrics for "American Cliché" are bad, and the message is--cliché. "Columind" comes across as a more sincere loud, in your face song from Richard Patrick, but it would've been easier on the ears and a better song if he would've just screamed the chorus, a la U2's Bad, but he thinks the listener can only sense how angry he is about the Columbine High School shootings if he screams the entire song.
The softer songs are all good but they seem too formulaic and after awhile the whole album sounds the same. I recommend listening to the whole thing before deciding to buy it or else just downloading the tracks you like. Don't buy it blind like I did just because you like one song.
Another Excellent Release from Filter.......2006-08-10
Again Filter puts out another record I can love. Many of the tracks on here are great. Again, as with the last there is much variety among the tracks going from soft to harder. This one does go a little back to their "Short Bus" roots and is, at times, a bit harder than the last one but all that does is help make it masterpiece that it is. It's a very good album. My favorite songs on this one have to be "You Walk Away", "Where Do We Go From Here", "So I Quit", and "The Missing". Here's my ratings for everything...
1. You Walk Away - 10/10
2. American Cliche - 9.5/10
3. Where Do We Go From Here - 10/10
4. Columind - 9/10
5. The Missing - 10/10
6. The Only Way (Is The Wrong Way) - 9.5/10
7. My Long Walk To Jail - 10/10
8. So I Quit - 10/10
9. God Damn Me - 10/10
10. It Can Never Be The Same - 8.5/10
11. World Today - 8/10
12. The 4th - 8.5/10
Overall: 94% A-
This is right up there with "Title Of Record". I still haven't quite yet decided which one's the best but for a while it was this one. If you're already a Filter fan and have yet to hear this album, I suggest you go out and buy this now. If you are a fan of Deftones or any kind of artsy rock like that check this out. Check out any Filter for that matter, they are really good.
Filter's most diverse work to date.......2006-07-19
Filter's third release sees the band continuing along their own tried and true path of heartfelt anthems balanced with a reasonable amount of experimentation. This effective formula continues to hold up well in the constantly evolving state of modern music. Although The Amalgamut's leading single, "Where Do We Go From Here", misfired on the music charts, the album as a whole is deeply catchy and uncompromising in its assorted flavors of musical expression. Filter can rock out one moment with songs like "So I Quit" and "Columind", and then become a mellow lounge act the next with "The Missing" and "God Damn Me".
The Amalgamut is, in the opinion of Filter and the majority of their fans, the band's finest work to date. To top it all off, the disc's multimedia portion features a remix of "Where Do We Go From Here" and a mystical short film featuring the album's closing soundscape, "The 4th". To quote Filter's mastermind Richard Patrick in a 2002 interview regarding the importance of The Amalgamut: "It should establish us as a band that's not gonna go anywhere. We're not leaving. We're not gonna break up. We're not gonna do anything stupid."
I agree with oddboy (below)- Gets better and better .......2005-11-12
First off- I loved TOR. Then this came out..listened to it for a week or so when it first came out, thought it was okay/good, and then it kind of faded in my rotation. But, here I am 3 years after I bought the album, and when a song from this album comes up on my i-Pod, I tend to turn off "shuffle" and listen to the whole album again, and it just keeps getting better. These guys have come a long way since "Hey man, nice shot." More spohisitcated sound, but still raw, loud, and melodic. Can't wait for their next move.
Absolutly a must!.......2005-10-08
This is the best Filter CD and just an all around great Hard Rock CD. My favorites are American Cliche, You walk Away, God Damn Me, And the World Today, which oddly enough I think is the most intriguing song on the CD. About 3 mintutes in, there are some backwards volcals that seem to fit the song well. Richard Patricks voclas in the song at the end are just great! What a song!!! God Damn me is another favorite, softer but has a good message of yourself f'ing up, hence God Damn Me...
