The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

In a sense, The Warmth of the Sun is to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer as 1975's Spirit of America was to the previous year's chart-topping Endless Summer. Both Summer compilations feature the obvious hits, and their followups collect less famous--though still worthy--tracks like "Hawaii," "409," and "Little Honda." But the 21st-century collections are sequenced by the Beach Boys themselves, and that means this volume's songs are second-tier in fame only. The casual fan whose curiosity was piqued by Sounds of Summer and picks this up for "All Summer Long" will be captivated by Brian Wilson's stops on the road to Pet Sounds ("Kiss Me Baby," "Please Let Me Wonder," "Let Him Run Wild," "The Little Girl I Once Knew"), moved by the father-son collaboration "Break Away" (in many ways the Beach Boys' farewell to the '60s), and floored by a string of five songs from the early '70s--a few of which had their genesis in the ill-fated Smile project--that are a perfect showcase for the maturity the group, especially Brian and Carl, managed to attain less than a decade after penning "Pom Pom Play Girl" ("Surf's Up," "Feel Flows," "All This Is That," "'Til I Die," "Sail On, Sailor"). Taken together, these two volumes provide an extraordinary portrait of a band attempting to straddle popularity and artistic vision, spotlighting each facet just long enough to make you want more. Do you know how long it has been since the Beach Boys released an album with new original material? I do. That would have been in 1992, fifteen years ago, when they released the totally execrable "Summer in Paradise," an album so bad that it could have been recorded by Aleutian Eskimos pretending to be the Beach Boys. Do you know how many compilations or collections of old material the band released since then? I do. If you include imports and all of the collections that they licensed to others, there have been 101 separate releases. That is not a misprint. In the past fifteen years, one hundred and one cd's have been issued containing recycled material. While Mike Love and his cohorts complain about (and sue) Brian Wilson in absentia, they write nothing of consequence, but repackage everything they can get their hands on, especially the stuff that features the real mainman, Brian Wilson. I can understand when an old band tries to coast on its reputation, but 101 re-packaged pieces of product is so far beyond the pale and so abusive of the band's core audience that it's a wonder anyone cares any more.
I, for one, cannot review "The Warmth of the Sun" on the merits of its songs, because it would be painfully redundant to do so. All that exists here are a few classic tracks intermingled with a few obscurities. As a rule (and especially when applied to the Beach Boys catalog), the more obscure the tune, the worse it is, and this collection practically screams that point. So, why would you buy this collection? I don't know. Maybe if you never bought a Beach Boys album in your life, this would be worthwhile, but with 101 other compilations to choose from, I see no particular advantage for this specific collection. Perhaps you are so masochistic that you feel compelled to buy anything that has the band's name attached. If so, I feel so truly sorry for you, as well as your ex-wife, your estranged children and your mortgage company.
Meanwhile, Mike Love is probably sitting at home right now, arranging the next batch of songs for next week's compilation. That can't be healthy for him, so let's do him a really big favor. Let's ban all future recycled collections credited to the Beach Boys. If our goal is achieved, we might force Mike to do something with an iota of creativity attached. Wouldn't that be nice? This album is not just another collection of Beach Boys Greatest Hits. These are alternate mixes (not remakes) of many of their best-known songs. A few are not quite as good as the original mixes while others are superior. In any case, it makes for an interesting experience, listening to our favorite Beach Boys tunes from a slightly different perspective, sort of like sitting in a different part of the auditorium at a concert. The recording quality is very good throughout. I was not disappointed with this CD.

There are very few really good songs on this CD. Most of these songs must have been the "B" sides of thier hit records because neither I nor any of my friends had heard most of them. Even after listening to the CD several times, it still didn't "grow" on me. I real waste of money.

No need for much analysis here. An excellent Beach Boys compiliation. It's got all of the radio hits, the fun in the summer in the 60s. Maybe that's why "In My Room" and "When I Grow up to Be a Man" aren't here, which is because they're more thoughtful and introspective. Too bad, but what's here is excellent, great ambassador from its era.

This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. The classics like Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, and Good Vibrations are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as if you live right there, ten feet from the beautiful ocean. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

Dick Dale's surf-guitar provided the memorable title theme ("Misirlou"), for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 smash, and although that sound runs throughout the soundtrack (along with bits and pieces of dialog from the movie), this is a pretty eclectic bunch of really terrific songs. I don't know how it all manages to hang together, but it does (you might say the same for the interwoven stories in the movie). Where else are you going to find Chuck Berry, Maria McKee, Al Green, The Statler Brothers, Kool & the Gang, Urge Overkill (singing a Neil Diamond ballad!), Ricky Nelson, Dusty Springfield, and the Tornadoes (among others) one album? McKee's beautiful "If Love is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)" is a standout, partly because it's less familiar. One of the few soundtracks of the '90s that went into the CD player and stayed there for weeks and months thereafter. --Jim Emerson

I can't say anything about this soundtrack that hasn't been said a hundred times. The known songs are great and the surf songs are better. I just wonder why Tarantino didn't include Link Wray's "Rumble" that is played in the background during the Jack Rabbit Slims scene. It is such a great song, it would have put this soundtrack over the edge.

I like this soundtrack a ton. Surprisingly, despite the fact that I love films, I rarely buy soundtracks. I only buy them if I dig the music. This is one of the few soundtracks I have, and I play it quite a lot. I think Tarantino is an overrated filmmaker, but his choice of music here is excellent. I really like the Chuck Berry song You Never Can Tell, and I really love Miserlou, the theme of Pulp Fiction. Son of a Preacher Man is a bonafide classic, and I dig Jungle Boogie, which is superior to Kool and the Gang's awful Celebration song. This soundtrack is better than the film.

PULP FICTION is a movie replete with coarse language and violence. The soundtrack album accurately reflects that film. In particular, on track #1, Honey Bunny's exclamation prior to "Misrilou" is not for the faint of heart. Be advised that this CD is definitely NOT for the easily-offended.

Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez spent $53 million to pay loving tribute to the vintage hundred-thousand-dollar exploitation fare that inspired Grindhouse's two-movies-for-the-price-of-one thrill ride. Tarantino's half of the exercise (which also includes Robert Rodriguez's self-scored Planet Terror) features another effusive slice of the director's eclectic musical sensibility to underscore its manic tale of stuntman/psycho-killer Kurt Russell and his muscle-car-fueled exploits. Tarantino works from a familiar formula that variously mixes evocative, semi-obscure Italian film cues from Morricone and Dinaggio, contrasting slices of '60s catalog from the great Jack Nitzsche and Brit Invasion also-rans DDDBM&T and some '70s fodder from both ends of the Top 40 via Smith and T. Rex, also stirring in a savory mid-disc run of R&B that stretches from PG&E's upbeat read of "Stagger Lee" through more familiar fare from Joe Tex, Eddie Floyd, and the Coasters. The director also serves up a couple of those deliciously off-kilter obscurities that have come to be his musical trademark as a coda: Eddie Beram's thumping "Riot in Thunder Alley" and April March's infectious ditz-pop take on Serge Gainsbourg's loopy "Chick Habit." --Jerry McCulley

Well, I can't say this is the best Tarantino soundtrack, the assembly of songs is not very homogeneous, and I don't like them all. Some are quite good though like the one from Ennio Morricone, and the Coasters.

don't really appreciate the fact that 3 tracks are dialogs.
i own all tarantino soundtracks and before this one i never really minded the dialogs.. on this one, however, they seem a little out of place.
other than that, i agree with other reviewers who cannot believe the music tarantino digs out for his films! why isn't any of this music the matter of general knowledge? it's great!
been listening to the CD on the way to the coast and back, some 10 times over, and i haven't gotten tired of it yet.
for rest, listen to sampler here on amazon. my favs are track 10 and 16.

Another entertaining soundtrack by Tarantino - well worth having. I'm curious about the version of the Coasters' "Down In Mexico" though. It's very different from the one on "Very Best of the Coasters." I can't tell if it's just remixed or another version entirely. I hope some R&B expert can comment on that. Finally, though, another great collection of very diverse sounds.

Penguins, real or computer-generated, are hot property in Hollywood. First came "March of the Penguins," then "Happy Feet," and now "Surf's Up." If it's gotten easy to confuse one penguin flick for another, though, mistaking their soundtracks is pretty much impossible, owing to the top-tier talent. Surf's Up, like Happy Feet before it, catapults kiddie soundtracks to a new level of cool by recruiting a never-before-heard track from an artist adults have been wanting to hear from for a while: Lauryn Hill. That song, "Lose Myself," is as mature and distinctive as Prince's contribution to Happy Feet, "Song of the Heart." But where Surf's Up outdoes itself is with the surrounding material; 311, Sugar Ray, Nine Black Alps, Ken Andrews, and Big Nose each hand in spiffy new tracks. Picking a favorite can be as difficult as differentiating one penguin from the next, so don't. Sit back, settle into the standbys threaded through the new stuff (the Romantics' "What I Like About You" is a good one), and enjoy the ride. --Tammy La Gorce

I am not a big fan of the recent CGI kids animated film trend. I am not a fan of Penguins, and I am not a fan of surfing. So why would I go to three different stores on this albums release day to try and find/pick it up? The music of course! There are plenty of good tracks on this CD, but I must be frank, I think I'm a little biased.

I am a HUGE fan of 311, if they werent on this album, I probably wouldn't have picked it up, but I'm glad that I did. I was surprised that the 311 track didn't even end up being my favorite track. My favorite actually was the Dirty Heads track "Stand Tall." This si an awesome song with plenty of styles and genre's mixed into it.

As for the 311 song, it is a cover of a Toots song (I believe) and it is executed fairly well. My only gripe was the mention of the movie's characters within the song. Its nothing to big, but it sort of ruins the magic of the song, and makes it feel more commercialized. Thats not to say it isn't great, which it certainly is, it jsut feels a little forced.

In the end, its about the music, The new Sugar Ray track is also great, as long as all the classics that you love to hear and missed, or missed out on when they came around the first time (Radicals, Romantics, Big Nose, Pearl Jam, etc.)

Overall, great selections, but if your not a fan of any of the bands, I'd wait until it reaches the bargain section of a local CD store. But if you like 311, Sugar Ray, The Dirty Heads, and anyone else on this CD, buy it, because you will most likely love the rest of the album as well.

Between their name, stage introductions spoken in a uniquely twisted form of Spanglish, bizarre lucha libre attire, and ongoing association with Latino rockabilly revivalist Big Sandy, Spanish has always been a major facet of Los Straitjackets' shtick. So it's little surprise that the Nashville-based garage/surf/twang/trash rockers decided to head south of the border for an all-covers album. You don't need to hablar español to shimmy, shimmy, shake along with the quartet. Guest vocals from Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos (who also produced the disc), Little Willie G. of East L.A.'s vintage Thee Midniters, and Big Sandy bring a soulful strut to these punchy stompers. True to form, liberties are taken with the song titles: "Hang on Sloopy" is now "Hey Lupe," "Bony Maronie" comes out as "Popotitos," and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" inexplicably appears as "El Microscopico Bikini." But that's all part of the fun as the masked men and singers swing through hot-tamale versions of signature hits from the Kinks, the Troggs, the Coasters, and others. Although the Fab Four aren't here as songwriters, their spirit energizes rocking renderings of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "Slow Down," and "Anna," all early Beatles staples. The Straitjackets haven't entirely abandoned the instrumentals from their own early years, as the scorching "Whittier Blvd." attests. Slow dancers will swoon to ballads such as "Dejenme Llorar" and Barbara Lynn's sublime "You'll Lose a Good Thing." Liner notes tell us that Spanish covers of many of these tunes managed to become moderate hits in the '60s and '70s, but it's safe to say these fresh versions will spice up any carnival. Great song selections, rock solid playing and vocals from some terrific performers... what more could you ask for? I have no idea why one person gave this release a single star. This is a fun album. Los Straitjackets & Big Sandy also put on a heck of a live show by themselves, but when they tour together... watch out! You won't stop dancing for about a month. This disc is highly recommended.

'Fraid not mi amigos. This CD is a major work of spam. Absolutley no originality and not even a trace of
enthusiasum. I'm sorry..I am a fan of Rojas and the masked men, but this is not a work too be proud of.
Lackluster vocals by Lil Willie G and even less effort from Big Sandy. Pass on this one carnales.

This collection rightly concentrates on Dale's instrumental exploits as the Jimi Hendrix of surf music. Nineteen sixty-one's "Let's Go Trippin'" was the first real surf instrumental, although the pyrotechnic fretwork of later Dale records is largely absent. Those divebomb runs, reverb drenchings, and impossibly quick picking displays materialize on the next single, "Shake & Stomp," then bloom on the revved-up Middle-Eastern standard "Misirlou." Dale's instrumentals generally fell into two camps: standard-progression frat blasts ("Take It Off," "Night Rider," "Mr. Eliminator") and minor-key Middle-Eastern excursions ("The Wedge," the "Pipeline"-esque "Banzai Wipeout," "The Victor," even "Hava Nagila"--which Jewish purists must have regarded as a hora of Babylon), on which his blistering technique was more likely to find its spotlight Some of his best work is found on "King of the Surf Guitar," a Duane Eddy knockoff with great vocals by the Blossoms garnished by lightning flashes of boss guitar. With all the dazzling axe-work on display (also including a beautiful 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on the Chantays' unearthly "Pipeline"), the coolest cut here may be the sole vocal, "Mr. Peppermint Man," on which Dale's rasp oozes a concupiscent slime over the murky tale of a lollipop Lothario who "carries a little sign that says, Have some dessert." I knew of Dick Dale's more well known tunes, his first "Let's go tripping" & "Misirlou", but the lesser known tracks are quite good. It demonstrates Dale's growth from his first to the "Pipeline" remake. The tracks are pretty much layed out on chronological order, and that's good.

His style is all over this cd, no mistaking it. He's described as "High Energy", and I'm not a fan of harsh surf - some of that here, but all good.

I recommend this cd for surf tune lovers and how surf all started with Dick Dale.

Dick Dale was left-handed, yet didn't reverse the strings on his guitar. His technique is most accurately described as electrified mandolin that was augmented in 1962 with a portable Fender reverb unit. He is widely considered the father of surf music and there's no denying that those who came after Dale used his music as a starting point.

The Del-Tones never had a hit record in their time; not even "Misrilou" made much of a splash (forgive the pun). That song and Dale enjoyed a sort of notoriety 30 years after the track's release thanks to the film PULP FICTION. It was featured in the movie's opening credits.

In comparison to the surf music that followed in Dick Dale's wake (pun again), his stuff had more energy perhaps, but it just wasn't as good. Dale had a penchant for reworking tunes to his style that probably should have been left alone-- "The Wedge," "Riders In The Sky" and "Hava Nagila" are good examples of this.

The last selection, "Pipeline," features Stevie Ray Vaughan, and was recorded in 1987. RHINO did a fine job of remastering the older sides, and their liner notes are informative. THE BEST OF DICK DALE & HIS DEL-TONES is a collection that will appeal most to surf music completists, and historians of the "California Sound."

I am more partial to metal and hard rock, but Dick Dale is great! The first man to blow up amps and melt guitar picks. He used to start with a handful and flick them off into to audience.

Most of the tracks are a good cross section of the times; has artist as well as studio written and produced tracks. If you are interested in pre-Beach Boys 'surf guitar', this is one to get.

Most people will recognize Banzai Wipeout, but there are some 'studio produced' tracks as well that Dale was forced to record. They are insipid, but a good contrast to the artist's material. Dale wanted to see what he could do with a traditional melody, Hava Nagila has to be experienced . . . .its a great revenge track for all the boring whiny gangsta rap you hear in the summer.

I've owned this particular CD for years, but I have been kind of reluctant to review it. Y'see, to me, Dick Dale is kind of like the Tao; "the Tao that is spoken about, is not the Tao..." The Dick dale that I speak about is not really Dick Dale.

Dick Dale needs to be experienced in order to be appreciated. I can't explain his music. It's kind of primal, kind of tribal, it's kind of raw and will gnaw at your gut for hours after listening to it. It takes a "different kind" of soul to not only listen to Dick Dale, but appreciate him. This isn't said out of arrogance, it's just said out of a knowing that not everybody will like him just like not everyone likes the Mills Brothers...

Shine little glow worm...

He is truly amazing. I saw him in concert a few times, but I remember one time he was playing so fast and so furious that he broke a guitar string in the middle of a jam session. Big deal you say? What would you say if I told you he changed that guitar string while he was playing it? He had a stage hand hold the guitar, while he changed the string with his left hand and played with his right. You wouldn't even believe how thunderous the applause was after that happened.

Every time I've seen him, I've been "deaf" for days. I've never left a Dick Dale concert without somehow changing in some way. He's like a Shaman, a wizard, an alchemist. He can transform the ordinary into something pure and golden. He is truly one of the world's greatest (and most overlooked) musicians.

He is the King.

So, buy this album. It's a great little starter and after you learn to appreciate this album, go to another, and another, until you'll finally be able to say, "Wow, I really do know Dick..."

Only one title on the second volume of the three-volume Good Vibrations best-of series cracked the U.S. top 10, 1964's "When I Grow Up to Be a Man." This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. In My Room, Don't Worry, Baby, and Friends are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as it can be summer all year long. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

As the album title indicates, this collection picks up where Volume 1 ends. Although some of the songs barely cracked the Top 40, I feel these songs are just as important and do more than just "supplement" Volume 1. Like Volume 1, these songs are short radio versions.

The liner notes are enjoyable along with the colorful pictures, song credits and chart positions. As stated in my title, you can't just buy this without getting the other two volumes. Plus, this three volume set may save you from buying their more expensive box set which contains over 100 songs. With this three volume, three CD set, you get 60 songs you will want. Highly recommended.

In many ways the Beach Boys GREATEST HITS VOL. 2 (along with Vol. 1 and 3) is a better choice than the 2003 single disc SOUNDS OF SUMMER. You not only still get all of their Top 40 singles (which SOUNDS OF SUMMER can't claim), you get some key album tracks and singles that charted outside the Top 40. So Vol. 2 not only gives you the big hits like "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" (1964, #9) and "Heroes and Villains" (1967, #12), you get Beach Boy favorites like "Wendy" (1964, #44) and "Friends" (1968, #47), along with b-sides like "Please Let Me Wonder" and the U.K.-only single release of "Cottonfields" from 1970--where it was one of their biggest hits at #3!

Even at 20 tracks the album is still a bit skimpy (running time - 51:12), but it helps provide a solid overview of the Beach Boys first decade. Like Vol. 1, the 12-page foldout booklet is awkward, but the essay by Beach Boy author Brad Elliot offers some terrific insight, the photos are wonderful and the track-by-track studio info is informative. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Great Material Unknown To Much Fans.......2004-01-30

Volume 2 in the "Good Vibrations" series tends give a more intriguing look at The Beach Boys. There is little, if any, inklings of the classic surf numbers. This disc seems to focus more on Brian Wilson's studio wizardry and their unique harmonies.

The first 11 tracks are from when the band was still hot and tearing up the charts. Here is where you'll find the eloquent "In My Room", the gloomy but optimistic "The Warmth Of The Sun" (great Brian falsetto on this one), the "faster, faster" vocal riff on "Little Honda", and the heartshattering "Don't Worry Baby", to name a few. Other gems include the one "Pet Sounds" track, "Caroline, No", the heartwrenching "Please Let Me Wonder", and the upbeat grooves on "You're So Good To Me".

The rest of the disc is from when the band started to become passe. Here we get tracks that are relative unknowns, with the exception of the infamous "Heroes And Villains". There's there two top 20 hits from this period, the pretty "Darlin'" and the nostalgic "Do It Again". There's also the sweet "Friends", a rock reworking of the country standard "Bluebirds Over The Mountain", and Carl's heavenly high on "I Can Hear Music". Closing this album is "Breakaway", featuring ebullient harmonies, and another reworked country standard, a marvelous Al Jardine - produced "Cottonfields".

I heavily suggest you purchase this album. It not only is full of great music but exposes the casual listener to a whole new world of Beach Boys music that they never heard before.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Greatest Hits Volume One is Better.......2004-01-16

This is a must for the absolute, die-hard Beach Boys fan. However, on the other hand, if you are a more casual Beach Boys fan (nothing wrong with that either), skip this CD and get the Greatest Hits of the Beach Boys, Volume One.

The first greatest hits CD has their BEST songs, their all-time, absolute GREATEST HITS. This CD picks up where volume one leaves off and focuses on their lesser known, and less popular songs.

Some of the selections contained in this CD are "I Can Hear Music," "In My Room," "All Summer Long," and "You're So Good To Me."

These songs are a study of how the Beach Boys' material matured and evolved from car, girl, and surfing songs to more intricate songs. It was at this point in their history that Brian Wilson wanted to progress from their surfing and car material to other types of songs, but the other members of the band still wanted to play surfing and car songs.

This volume is an study in that evolution. It is certainly not a bad CD, but if you prefer the car and surfing material, stick with volume one.

If there's irony in the fact that the founding fathers of surf rock the Ventures hail from quarters not exactly renowned as bastions of sun-drenched wave-riding (Portland, Oregon, and Tacoma, Washington), it only stands to reason that their inspirations weren't exactly baggy-clad and bushy-blond-coiffed, either (Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy). But those unlikely roots did indeed spawn a 40-year career for the band as international stars and, more important, instrumental rock's first and foremost preservationists.

This album replicates much of the Ventures' longtime tour repertoire, drawing on their own considerable hits ("Walk, Don't Run," "Perfidia," "Hawaii Five-O") as well as covers that range from Richard Rodgers ("Slaughter on 10th Ave.") to prime '60s bands like the Surfaris ("Wipe Out"), Marketts ("Out of Limits"), and Astronauts ("Baja"). All are performed with the verve and solid craftsmanship that has long characterized the band. Longtime fans should note the presence of guitarist Nokie Edwards (the band's most fabled soloist from their heyday) on most of the tracks, as well as Leon Taylor, who ably fills the drum throne of his late father, Mel. Later guitarist Gerry McGee's Nashville-influenced licks are featured on "Five-O" and "Bambora," with former Steely Dan-Doobies fretman Jeff "Skunk" Baxter also taking a solo turn on the latter. While some can't quite measure up to the originals, this collection often succeeds on the band's still-driving momentum and the obvious joy they continue to find in the material. --Jerry McCulley

I have been a Ventures fan since the early 60's and own several of their other CD's. This is my new favorite, with an excellent selection of songs and a great sound quality. I do have two minor complaints. "Walk Don't Run 64", while quite good is not quite as good as the original version and I've always found The Ventures version of "Pipeline" slightly disappointing.

Walk Don't Run '64 is an astonishing composition, and abundantly easy on the ears. Like many of the tunes by the Beatles, Walk Don't Run '64 is simple, and playable by countless high school students. Moreover, as with the Beatle tunes, the sum of what is set forth in Walk Don't Run '64 is greater than its parts. Walk Don't Run '64 on this compilation is slightly different than the original, and I tend to prefer the original. In the current version, the opening bass line is essentially a series of percussive notes, with a sound similar to the percussive notes found in Kraftwerk's Computer World. In other words, the opening bass notes tend to lack a clearly defined position on the musical scale -- the bass player's palm was pressed against the string, muffling it to a greater extent in the current version than in the original. Another difference is that the opening drum beat contains a subtle triplet, and the guitar arpeggios contain an added trill. Moreover, in the ending in the current version, the expected "signature" tremelo is absent. Continuing with the description of the current version of Walk Don't Run '64, the bass line is a bit beefier than found on the originally recorded vinyl. Fortunately, the subtle accompaniment of the second guitar is preserved, and the chirpy, Del Shannon-style organ accompaniment and organ lead are magnificently preserved. By preserved, I mean the current style is the same as in the original release of Walk Don't Run '64.

Most or all of the other songs are a wonder, and best of the genre -- the musically simple and musically primitive genre known as: "surf songs." Even impatient teenagers will have little trouble learning by heart the fine, jazzy, lead guitar riffs from this album. Out Of Limits contains the castanets that you remember from the original. Penetration and Pipeline are guitar powerhouses. The Ventures' Wipe Out does justice to the whimpy version originally done by the Surfaris. A final note: This is not a recreation of the entire, original Ventures' Surfin' album, so please don't expect to find all the songs found on that album. Only a couple of songs from the Ventures' Surfin' album are found in the present production. I do miss Windy and Warm, and Diamonds, from that earlier album. Lonely Surfer, noted for its catchy but tediously repeated tune, is a fine member of this compilation. The Ventures' version lacks the instrumental buildup found in Jack Nitzsche's original (strings and horns), thus making one more aware of this number's repetitiveness.

Again, it came as a relief that the musicians had preserved the original style of these surf songs. Thankfully, there was no attempt to convert the songs into dance, disco, or techno numbers. I only saw the Ventures once. This was at Merlyn's on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin. During intermission, Nokie Edwards made his way through the audience and, in passing by, politely placed his hand on my shoulder and then continued on through the crowd. And so, it was at that one, brief moment in 1982 or 1983, that I had the hand of an actual Rock-God on my shoulder.

Children tend to like the Ventures due to the catchy tunes, the pleasant bell-tone sound of the Mosrite guitars used by the Ventures, and the total absence of mushy lyrics.

This disk is highly recommended for anyone who really grooves on the inspiring sounds of surf guitar. I bought this by accident because I looking for a disk with "Pipeline" and "Slaughter on 10th Avenue" the other tunes weren't important at the time. Well I was in for a surprise! Just the three-song run from "Penetration" to "Mr. Moto" to "Out of Limits" is enough to turn any landlubber into a devoted surf head. As far as the people who think that the newer recording sound is not authentic as compared to the old noisy scratchy originals.... Your all wet...This is the bomb. Look out Dick Dale theres a lot of variety here not just Spanish sounding songs with single string leads......
