You just can't keep a good doom-and-gloomer down. In a career that began with the white-light, white-heat explosion of Psychocandy back in '85, the Reid Brothers--singer Jim and guitarist William) have rarely allowed any rays of sunlight to disrupt their rainy feedback parade. Until Munki, that is. Label-less for a couple of years, the Reids reassessed their situation with the self-financed Munki and saw that life, at least for the time being, was good. Trips back to childhood, reflections on the joys of rock 'n' roll, analysis of the optimistic reasons they made Psychocandy in the first place--it's all here on the relatively upbeat Munki. Shocking, but fun. --Tom Lanham --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

...The J&MC appear content to return to their old ways, which is not a bad thing. Sure, there are a few changes ... such as the addition of a trumpet on a couple of songs; on "Man on the Moon" this not only works, but it works magnificently. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Album Description
"Munki Brain" is the 15th release from one of the hardest working bands in punk rock. THE QUEERS have been touring and releasing music for over 20 years, and in that time have garnered a huge following of devout fans. Sarcastic, silly, and offensive, Joe King and THE QUEERS have been called the true succesors to punk kings THE RAMONES. It's not hard to see why, and Joe has often collaberated with such musicians as Ben Weasel and Marky Ramone. "Munki Brain" is sure to become another classic in a long line of hits.

The newest album.......2007-04-17
Pretty much when you buy a queer's album you pretty much know what your getting into. It sound just like their previous album 2002 Pleasant Screams. Basically it has 13 2 1/2 minute ramones sounding pop-punk songs. All 13 songs sound exactlly the same. Which is not a bad thing. That is why I pretty much like all their albums.
The best two songs on this records are "Houston we Have a problem" and "think she's starting to like me".
The greatest thing now is that Asian Man records is reissueing all their lookout record releases. That totally awsome. I just bought "Beat off", "Move Back Home" and "Grow up". Since lookout went out business.
Are the queers my favorite pop punk band ? Probally, I like the first two Greenday records and almost all of the Screaching Weasel records and Squirtgun and The Riverdales.
Lookout I think the best collection of Pop punks bands.
So If you heard any other queers album and liked you'll definately enjoy this CD.
The Queers are here?.......2007-04-03
Yawn. This is the best word to describe this CD. This is coming from a huge Queers fan. Don't Back Down was the last GREAT album the Queers did. PRC was OK and probably should have been the last. This album is just kinda boring. Maybe I'm getting old, maybe Joe is too. This album just doesn't grab you and shake you like it should. It's not terrible, just blah. I expected more.
In A Fair World..........2007-04-01
...the Queers would rule the radio waves. If you are a fan of the Ramones then you'll just love the Queers. This is the band that has picked up the mantle of Johnny, Joey, and Dee Dee and done the brudders proud! And if you are younger and enjoy bands like Green Day, Blink-182, or Fall Out Boy you should check out the Queers. These guys pump out consistently enjoyable pop/punk that digs its way into your ears and stays there all day.
The Queers are Back!.......2007-02-07
Yes, that's right. The Queers have returned and show no signs of old age. It's kind of amazing how a legendary band this old can still put out an album that sounds just as good as their stuff back in the day. This has 13 tracks and all still have the Queers sound that we love. Duke Kahanamoku, and I Can't Stay Mad At You, both have that Beach Boys vibe that The Queers like to throw in. One thing that you will notice though when you listen to this is that you can hear some maturity and also some experimentation. For example, I Think She's Starting To Like Me, is a simple 2 minute song but in the middle it kind of goes in a direction that you probably wouldn't hear from the Queers. Some other highlights are I'm A Fool, and the excellent closer for the album, Brian Wilson. There is also a couple guest musicians on this record including, Ben Weasel with his song Tangerine, and Lisa Marr on the vocals for Brian Wilson. This is a very solid record and other bands this age couldn't put out a record as good as Munki Brain. Congratulations Joe Queer, we hope to see many more albums after this! Buy this album.

I Hate Rock and Roll.......2006-07-31
It only gets 4 stars from me because I'm weighing it against previous JMC works. I have to agree that "I Hate Rock and Roll" is one of thee best rockers...fantastic! A great, overlooked album. It is a grown up album, scarred by the heartbreaks after all the sex in the previous albums, and it's a great paean to both the spirit of rock and roll and to the JMC--somehow affirming that one cries into one's beer at night but comes out swinging hard the very next day.
JMC's last hurrah is a mixed bag.......2005-09-08
Yet another instance where Rock and Roll brothers just can't stay together. After only six studio albums (I'm not counting "B-Sides"), William and Jim Reid came to the conclusion that they couldn't stand being in the same room (or on the same stage) together. What a shame.
What's so interesting about "Munki" concerns the authorship of the songs. No longer could I be confident in identifying a song as Jim's or William's. William especially, can apparently write in his brother's style. For instance, my favorite song on the album, "Degenerate" sounds like Jim at his grungy best, but no! It's brother William's composition.
In my opinion, "Munki" is somewhat of a mess. By far, JMC's most adventurous and experimental album, the whole thing seems to heavily depend upon the three songs in the center of the album, namely "Virtually Unreal," the aforementioned "Degenerate," and "Cracking Up." Honestly, I could skip the others, a few of which are laced with pointless obscenities, almost as if the Reids wanted that parental advisory sticker.
Anyway, I still thoroughly enjoy listening to The Jesus and Mary Chain. After "Stoned and Dethroned," I saw them in concert at a small NYC venue, which was great (although my date didn't quite get it and wanted to leave after "Reverence" -- the one that starts off with "I want to die just like Jesus Christ"). Mazzy Star opened, and, you guessed it, the adorable Hope Sandoval came out to duet with Jim on "Sometimes Always."
Hey, if the original members of "Cream" can reunite, there must be hope for the Reid brothers too!
This Is Amazing!.......2005-03-18
Whenever I feel really p.o.'ed this is a great album to listen to. It blows away the crap that people call "indie" these days. Like that jerk off cash cow Conor Oberst. I Hate Rock N' Roll is IMHO one of the best songs ever written. This is one of the JAMC's best albums. Only a couple of their albums can rival this one. An amazing finale for this band. It's like one of their concerts; leaves you with a thirst for more, and the sensation of ringing feedback damaging your ears forever. Incredible!
Another CLASSIC JAMC album!!!.......2004-09-18
MUNKI is one of the BEST JAMC albums. In fact, I rank it FOURTH, after PSYCHOCANDY, DARKLANDS & BARBED WIRE KISSES. Really, it's THAT CLASSIC JAMC!!! It's pure pleasure to listen to, is consistenly great, and is VERY LOUD!!! I've been thoroughly enjoying it since it came out in 1998!! I still listen to it monthly!! You've GOTTA at least check it out for yourself - if you like THE CHAIN, you will certainly ENJOY this CD!!!
A great finale for J&MC.......2004-04-15
Cut about 4-5 songs of this album and rearrange the order of the songs, this album would have been one of the greatest of the 90's. Some of the songs are spectacular, like Cracking up, which is one of the greatest songs they ever did. I also like Virtually unreal, degenerate, birthday, moe tucker, commercial, dream lover, black, and I love/hate rocknroll. The brothers can produce great songs, either the experimental rock stuff and melodic songs with great melody. The most underrated band of all time when it comes to music, but the worst live band ever, which hurts their credibility. Otherwise, collecting all of the J&MC albums is a great investment if you like music. It does take a while to appreciate all of their stuff though, but once you do, you'll be amaze at their talent.
