This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

While the notoriously blunted Supergrass have always produced vividly screaming pop, their songs never followed an arc, instead flashing their moments of knuckleheaded brilliance before shuffling off in another direction. While Life on Other Planets, their fourth disc, has the band's goofball hallmarks--random coughs, braying animals, and mashed potato references, to name three--the songs go somewhere, and they yank us along with them. From the galloping chorus in "Grace," to the rickety handheld percussion and soft phrasings of "Evening of the Day," and the zippy distorted guitar lead in "Rush Hour Soul," Supergrass offers complete pop pictures with enormous detail and lots of instrumental extras. And the songs really rock. Plus, it's hard not to be staggered by a group that cagily writes about offbeat topics like expired witches ("Brecon Beacons") and life among the dead ("Prophet 15") while remembering to make those bridges and choruses soar. --Kim Hughes

I was in grade 7 or 8 and I heard Grace by Supergrass on Muchmusic and i thought it was decent. A year passed & I still remember the band name and the song so I downloaded it....That's when I fell in love. I have listened to this cd so many times that when I do listen to it now I save it for a special occasion

supergrass life on other planets the album which featured the great single "grace" which sounded like t.rex KOOL i've got all their albums..but really i only listen too this and "in it for the money" because they have the less radio-friendly popness too them and have a dark twist on "in it for the money" and on this album you have the sparkly guitars yet a rockier sound a modern day classic by a britpop band who's shed it's label

Supergrass is one of the best bands active today. Their sound is both retro and current. Not only can they make catchy music, but their musicianship is second to none. That said, this release took a few listens to grow on me, but it has certainly done that. Each time it takes its place in my car's CD player, it stays there for weeks at a time. I feel this is one of their better releases, and I anxiously await the next...

New direction but songcraft suffers (4 Stars).......2004-09-29

Like every Supergrass album, Life On Other Planets takes the Supergrass formula of quirkiness and pop-masterworks and combines them with a new style. This time around it's glam rock but there's still fewer shining examples of Supergrass' wonderful songcraft than on their first two releases. Half of the album's great, while the rest is either good, bad, or even worse: filler. Songs like "Can't Get Up" and "Funniest Thing" feel half finished while "Evening Of The Day" is a purposeful parody of a parody that isn't funny as much as it is annoying, annoying being a term rarely found in any intelligent description of a Supergrass song. Although this is by far the most inconsistent release of Supergrass' career, the highs found here match and even outweigh the lows. The singles "Rush Hour Soul," "Seen The Light," "Never Done Nothing Like That Before," and "Grace" are all great additions to the Supergrass library. The wonderful "Za" and the gloomy funk of "Breacon Beacons" are also stand out tracks that make this album definitely worth owning. With "La Song" there are elements of the worse tracks featured here with a boring start that is almost unbearable after hearing what the rest of the song sounds like. This is an accurate representation of LOOP as a whole, some parts being fantastic, others being plain or grating. For the most part though this is a good album, if inconsistent. It is unsettling to see sketchy material on a Supergrass release and their production is a bit irksome in some spots but Life On Other Planets also confirms that Supergrass will never lose their touch for writing some of the most memorable pop songs of all time, should you be paying attention.

Another great album from my favorite band!!!!!.......2003-01-28

Supergrass is utterly AMAZING. Gaz Coombes is a great singer/songwriter. Danny's drumming and Mick's bass playing is as forceful as always. Robert Coombes' keyboards give this album a more "electronic" feel than "In It For The Money". Even more so than their self titled. I guess it's because he joined the band just in time for their self titled album to be recorded. It's definitely the most fun album they've put out. More people seem to be into them now that this album was released. I used to think I was the only fan here in Suburban America, but they're popping up everywhere! While this album isn't as good as "In it for the Money", it still holds it's ground as a fun album to listen to.

A Planet Worth Visiting.......2003-01-28

Young upstart rockers wondering how to incorporate their influences into their own sound could do to have a listen to Supergrass' Life on Other Planets. After two hit-and-miss CD's (I Should Coco, We're In It for the Money), Gaz Coomes and his power trio started to find their power on their eponymous and effervescent third release. With Life on Other Planets, Supergrass channel their glam jones into a solid collection, certainly the best sequenced of their CD's. You'll hear Bowie in here, a bit of Roxy Music, and lots of Marc Bolan. But Supergrass don't traffic in high concepts, the allure of decadence, or opuses to space travel. They have a light talent and a buoyant spirit, which never flags over the course of twelve songs. And when they have something to impart - as all clowns sometimes do - they don't make you suffer for it. Just throw it in during the next rave towards a blissful chorus.

This cd blew me away and it is by far Supergrass best. It starts off strong, and finishes even stronger. The songs are so catchy and creative and a lot of fun to listen to. This is a type of cd that you listen from the beginning to the end at one sitting. It works best that way because it's album-oriented, not singles-oriented like most cds are. All the songs are good but my three favorite ones are more at the end, with Grace, La Song, and Prophet 15. Supergrass proved they are one of the best bands in rock-n-roll but unfortunately, they are non-existent in America. If anyone is tired of the music industry right now, this is the cd to get.

This is one damn good album, Killer hooks bounce thru the speakers, twisted vocals, just a superlative listen. These guys are incapable of making a lousy record. If you're already a fan, you need this bad, if just starting with them, make sure you part with your dockets & get everythign else by the best band from the UK since The Jam. All releases are indispensable.

Best rock album I've heard since "Supergrass".......2002-12-10

Anybody that says that Supergrass are too poppy and simple are obviously missing the point. They are the kings of pop, and they know it. There is no other band out there right now that sounds anything like them, and there never has been. The reason Supergrass still haven't broken a market is because the media still can't compare them to someone else, which is how they fit other bands into nicely taylored categories.

Their melodies are more complex than they've ever been given credit for. They are beautiful. Their song structuring is second to none. Supergrass are, in short, unquestionably talented and masters at what they do, which is create utterly stunning pop tunes.

This album is pure Supergrass through and through. A shiver ran down my spine when I heard the first track, "Za". Supergrass are back, finally! We need Supergrass. Forget The Hives, forget The White Stripes. Do yourself a favor and never listen to anything other than Supergrass ever again. You'll thank me for it. They *are* rock 'n' roll, and "Life On Other Planets" proves it.
