More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

Sweet Charity: Sweet Memories.......2007-07-13
Listening to this Soundtrack brought back so many sweet memories of a fun time in my life - college. Hearing "Rhythm of Life" done by Sammy Davis Jr. was most memorable. This is such a fun soundtrack to play. I look forward to many years of enjoyment and recommend it to anyone who was in college in the late 60's.
Sammy Davis Jr. is awesome.......2007-01-10
I have been converting my old LP's into CD's then putting them on my Ipod. I am picky about what I put on my Ipod, selecting only certain tracks from each CD. This CD, however, I put all tracks onto my Ipod except the overture. While I find Shirley MacLaine's voice a bit weak, the songs overcome any such problems with their energy. And one of the main reasons I wanted the movie rather than broadway CD was because of Sammy Davis Jr. His contributions to this album are worth every penny.
Great Memories (better than current 2005 Broadway Revival).......2005-08-06
I saw the movie version for the first time a couple of years ago and continue with fond memories. I saw the 2005 Broadway Revival in June. Trust me, stick with the movie cast recording. Paula Kelly, Chita Rivera, and even Shirley MacLaine have a magic and zeal that is lost in the current revival. My main disappointment is that the movie soundtrack's version of The Rich Man's Frug is too short and doesn't have the best parts of the full number from the movie. That aside, who could ever top Sammy Davis' performance in Rythm of Life. Chita and Paula are beyond comparison in Something Better Than This.
This cast recording makes me wish I was old enough to have seen them during the original Broadway run.
Consider buying the DVD to the movie to accompany this DVD. That way, you'll also get to see Ben Vereen at his best. I will warn you that the movie was a bit indulgent with extended scenes whose length is not justified by their contribution to the overall film. It's about 20-30 minutes too long. But the musical and dance numbers are really great. Who doesn't love Fosse?
long-overdue reissue of the classic soundtrack.......2003-10-09
SWEET CHARITY was turned into a not-so-successful film in 1969, starring Shirley MacLaine. Originally appearing on Broadway in 1966 starring Gwen Verdon, the musical is based on the classic Fellini film "Nights of Cabiria".
The score was heavily revised for the move to celluloid. "You Should See Yourself" was replaced by "My Personal Property", "I'm the Bravest Individual" was replaced by "It's a Nice Face". The melody for "Sweet Charity" was re-jigged for a more uptempo feel. Songs cut from the score altogether included "Baby Dream Your Dream", "Too Many Tomorrows" and "Charity's Soliloquy".
Shirley MacLaine was joined by a cast including veteran Broadway talents Paula Kelly and Chita Rivera, John McMartin (recreating the role he originated on Broadway opposite Gwen Verdon) as Oscar Linquist, Sammy Davis Jr. as Daddy Brubeck, Stubby Kaye as Herman and Ricardo Montalban.
Shirley MacLaine sings her numbers with her sweet pixie-esque voice, gliding through showstoppers like "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" with great ease.
Another fantastic package from Decca Broadway. Peter Filichia, as always, offers comprehensive liner notes, and sound quality is quite good. In addition to this CD I also recommend the still-superb 1966 original Broadway cast album with Gwen Verdon.
Sweet Charity.......2003-09-14
I've been waiting for this version of Sweet Charity to come out for years. My parents use to listen to the Decca LP many years ago and the tunes grew on me. From hey Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, I'm A Brass Band, etc, etc Great music all around with not one bad track. Before this version I had brought the Broadway Show versions and to me they were all kind of flat. Maybe because I grew up on the film version I couldn't appreciate the show versions as much. The vocals and the scoring are great. Shirley MacClaine doesn't have the greatest voice in the world but she's still great.
My biggest complaint about this CD release is that it is not complete. You think that Decca Records would do a complete Cd release as previous musical soundtracks have done. This is a direct copy of the Lp released so many years ago. There is so much more music in this film that I was disapointed when I found it it was only a Cd of the original album. With Cd's fitting up the 80 minutes of music it is very surprising that this truncated version was released. Maybe because it's not considered a classic. This is am underrated film as far as I am concerned and in my opinion a far better score than Chicago (with all due respect to Bob Fosse who directed this film) This would be a great CD if only it wasn't abbreviated.

Are You A True Fuschnick? {4.5 Stars}.......2007-01-18
To be honest, when I first heard "Ring The Alarm" (their 1st single), I didn't like it. I thought the beat was corny and the video was definitely corny. So I didn't give these guys the time of day for about 3 or 4 months. Then I saw the video for "La Schmoove" and the beat, though not as hardcore as I would've preferred at the time, was nice and it featured one of my favorite rappers (Phife Dawg). But that still wasn't enough to sway me. What did it for me was when I was watching video jukebox (a childhood staple of mine) and I saw the video for "True Fuschnick". The video, in all its black & white, posse vibe glory, was enough for me. I immediately went and grabbed the album. I think what immediately jumps out about this album is easily Chip Fu. I've only heard one person rap faster than Twista (I'm talkin' the old "Runnin' Off At The Mouth" Twista too, not that candy b.s that you new jacks are used to). Chip is that person. Sometimes it seems like dude just doesn't come up for air. I personally think his flow is amazing. Poc Fu is nice too, but in a more gritty, hardcore kind of way. Moc Fu is just "eh" in my book, but he's a more than capable 3rd option that holds his own. The beats are harder than what I expected given the names in the producer credits -- A Tribe Called Quest (3 tracks), Dres (1 track), Lyvio G. (3 tracks), and Fu Schnickens (3 tracks). All in all, the songs all thump well and the lyrics are solid.
As far as flaws, I would have to say that there really aren't any. To be honest, there are probably one or two mediocre beats (Check It Out, Bebo), but Chip's flow carries any mediocrity found here. Also, every now and then Moc Fu will drop a wack line and because the rest of the album is so dope, it sort of magnifies his slip ups. Otherwise, things are great. This joint bumps all the way through but the LP is kind of short (10 tracks at just over 43 minutes). So enjoy the short but sweet format.
F.U. Don't Take It Personal is one of the best rap releases from '92. I think the fact that west coast was becoming a raging monster in the rap game helped make this joint as slept on as it is. The sound is vintage early 90's east coast flavor (which never gets old to me). I recommend grabbing this joint if you come across it. You'll be glad you did.
Standout Tracks: Ring The Alarm, Back Off, La Schmoove feat. Phife Dawg, Props, and True Fuschnick (My Favorite)
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS I HAVE EVER OWNED.......2005-09-27
This album is from back in the 90's when hip hop was hip hop, not the crap thats out now. If you are looking for a good hip hop album than this is one to add to your collection. This album is hillarious and smooth at the same time. Fu Schnickens wasn't very popular but they had skills that noone these days could ever pull off.
Not like this anymore.......2005-09-19
I really liked this album. It was back when you didn't need to be hard, self-absorbed, or constantly talking about money and women.
Hip hop is not diverse enough anymore for a group like Fu to have success. If you want something clever, fast and different to listen to then buy this album.
Saying that the current state of hip hop is depressing is by far an understatement. Buy this album and you'll see a side that doesn't get much expression anymore.
The rhymes are interesting and fun to listen to; and you get to see the art of passing the mic mid-verse. Current hip hop 'stars' aren't skilled enough to make this work anymore. Nor does that fanbase have the cognitive capabilities to follow it, if it were to be done.
!!! BRING SOME RIDDLEN !!!.......2005-06-05
FOR THOSE OF US THAT HAVE HEARD FU SCHNICKENS, YOU KNOW YOU'VE STRUCK GOLD. MAD SKILLZ, MAD. TWISTA WOULD HAVE TROUBLE KEEPING UP WITH CHIP, AND THE REST HAVE ALMOST EQUAL SKILLZ. GOOD PRODUCTION, FAT BEATZ. THE OLNY PROBLEM WIT THESE GUYZ IS THE HUMOR. THIS ALBUM WOULD BE ALOT BETTA IF IT WASNT FUNNY AT PARTZ. THE LYRICS ARENT THAT GOOD, (KINDA BAD BEASTIE BOYS) BUT THE WAY THEY DELIVER THEM IS AMAZIN! I WISH THESE GUYS WERE STILL AROUND... WOULD BE HUGE I THINK.
Thesxe guys have skillz........2001-04-24
I came upon this album almost by accident. I thought the name Fu-Schnickens was funny so I gave a listen and was I glad I did.
What I found is that this trio has some of the fastest, smoothest rhymes I have ever heard. I am not the biggest rap fan in the world, but I love this stuff, and these guys do impress.
They even rap backwards - double speed on the second track "Movie Scene" which is a funny tribute to hong kong cinema.
Their lyrics are intertwined with a ton of references to pop culture like captain caveman. People aged 25 - 35 will particularly appreciate this.
Even though this album is 10 years old now, it's still pretty fresh.

I dont really think people should mention SNL because this has absolutely nothing to do with it! this is a jammin rockin blues cd, great remakes of great classics done by 2 guys who you can tell know their music. akroyd/belushi are really great at this, not like some celebs who try to dabble in music as a side thing, when i put this cd in there is no way i can stop without listening to the entire thing, its a good time guaranteed everytime!!!!!!!

somewhat original.......2004-12-24
I've always got a kick out of the blues brothers and I would recommend this cd to both snl fans and lovers of classic r&b/blues & rock......Having read some of the other reviews, I would like to point out a fallacy. This is NOT mostly original. There are some original tunes but over half are cover versions. In fact, nine of the thirteen songs are covers. I listed them below with the original recording artists-
Have Love, Will Travel-Richard Berry (of Louie Loiue fame)
Dig Myself A Hole-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup
Time Won't Let Me-The Outsiders
Polk Salad Annie-Tony Joe White
300 Pounds Of Joy-Howlin Wolf
All She Wants To Do Is Rock-Wynonie Harris
Greenbacks-Ray Charles
Swinging Party-Lowell Fulsom
Driving Wheel-Roosevelt Sykes
Aykroyd & Belushi never tried to take credit for songs performed as the Blues Brothers and I don't think they would do so now.
True Identities Revealed.......2004-07-17
For 20+ years, Dan Aykroyd (an avid blues fan) has been performing the music he loved under the persona of Elwood Blues, one half of the now legendary "Blues Brothers" mystique. Thanks to the movies, it's been hard for Aykroyd to shed those glasses and hat and simply perform the music he loves AS Dan Aykroyd.
This album finally gives him the chance to perform as himself. Although teamed with one-time "Blues Brothers" singing mate, Jim Belushi (filling the shoes of Aykroyd's late partner, John Belushi), don't expect this to be another blues tribute album. For the first time, these two men (who have definitely blossomed as singers in their own right) have recorded a straight-forward studio album of modern blues songs, the majority of which are originals.
There is no gimmick on this album, simply two men singing, backed by a talented band (none of which were involved in the original Blues Brothers Band, by the way). As stated in other reviews, this is NOT a Blues Brothers recording. It IS a great blues project, however.
Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd are wonderful performers.......2004-03-08
I have gone to two of their CD signings and I got to met Dan Aykroyd. Jim, I met at a According To Jim taping. Songs from this CD was played on ATJ. The first season was "Cadillac Man", next season was "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can't Get Out Of It," and final this season they did "300 Pounds of Joy" and "Time Won't Let Me." Since I have it I been playing it over and over. I am a big fan of both of them, and also I love the Blues Brothers. They also do a wonderful Blues Brothers show. Any fan should add this to their collection, I have and its great music. I have Jim's other CD called 36-22-36 and it's also a great one. Both CD's I recommend. Great Blues music.

Although I really liked the singles "My Love Is The Shh!" and "All I Do," I never thought about getting this album. I finally listened to the whole album and really enjoyed it, so I plan on buying it soon.
only hit: My love is the Sh..........2004-02-07
Unfortunately "My love is the Sh..." is the only outstanding song for SFP. The rest is in the same style - even the earlier stuff - but not with as much hit potential. This album containing their hit is a bit better than the previous ones due to their guestsingers like Trina &Tamara.
It's cool but there's a catch..............2002-01-09
"My love is the Shhhh" was kinda hott so I felt inspired to pick up this CD. OK, here's the catch: no other tracks on the album are like that track. So if you are like me (heard it on the radio so much that you ended up falling for that song and wanting more) you'll be disappointed. BUT in all fairness, if you are able to disregard that factor, it's a cool album! My favorites are "My love is the Shhhhh", "Days like this", "Take it or Leave it", and "Act like you want it".
Sidebar- S.F.P. were the guys who sang on Will Smith's song "just the two of us". I know you couldn't live without that small tidbit of information. :-)

leave it to logo.......2006-08-16
leave it to the logo network to get this dude some well deserved attention. he deserves a close look... "flow" is off the hook... deep in soul blended well with a soft rap beat that hits the spot. great mood music. trust me.
INCREDIBLE!.......2004-02-03
To look at his boyishly white face, you couldn't imagine the sounds that come from inside. Seeing a cute face, I decided to listen to his CD at a listening station at a music store and the sounds that came through the headphones made me think that perhaps I wasn't listening to what I thought I should be hearing. There is so much soul trapped in that little body...thank God he has an outlet from which to release it, otherwise he would explode! All songs are amazing and he is definitely worth a listen...you will not be disappointed!
This boy is good!!!.......2004-01-12
I have just listened to the CD. Adam's voice is so smooth and beautiful. I love the songs. How could people sleep on this indie artist. He's gonna be huge. Such a mature sound for such a young artist. It's like a soul revolution that i've never heard before. I LOVE IT!! check this boy out!

This was heck a show, and the CD is as close as we can get to it!.......2006-02-20
We went to Shirley M.'s live show about 20 years ago and tremendously enjoyed ourselves. Around then we purchased the disk that we played numerous times. With the change from longplay discs to CD's the disc ended up where they all do..in a box in the garage... Now the CD came out, I bought it and since played it 50 times...great show, great songs, great atmoshphere..
Steel Shirley.......2004-09-24
I encourage any fans of live performance artists and entertainers alike to add to this to your collection. Since seeing Shirley live these days is a rarity; this might be the closest we can get. Her stirring renditions of, "If My Friends Could See Me Now," & "She's a Star," get you going and you will be humming and singing them to yourself for a week! Shirley is an often forgotten "triple threat!" But she pulls out her triple threats and treats you to a unique trip into Shirley's world of song, dance, and acting. I also hope that DRG Records is able to put together a release of this show on DVD/VHS format or another of Shirley's live shows. I hope many people buy the live CD sending the message that Shirley is loved and that we want more! Shirley proves she is a seasoned pro and before she became a Steel Magnolia she proved her talent and grit on stage was solid as steel as well! Enjoy Shirley Maclaine Live At the Palace!
a great recording from a great star.......2003-02-08
This new reissue of Shirley MacLaine's album 'Live at the Palace' is a fantastic testimony to Ms MacLaine's musical talents (which aren't lauded nearly as much as her acting talents).
Ms MacLaine mounted her own solo show at the Palace Theatre in 1976, resulting in this live recording. She sings most of her numbers from the film version of SWEET CHARITY (in which she memorably starred) including "My Personal Property", "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now". She also sings the title song from IRMA LA DOUCE (although the film version is devoid of any musical moments), and delivers a reminisce of her favorite acting role - in 'Some Came Running' - before sliding into a rendition of "I'm a Person Too".
Ms MacLaine also talks about subbing for Carol Haney in the Broadway production of THE PAJAMA GAME, which catapulted her to stardom. It's obvious that dear Shirley is having a marvellous time here. I urge Broadway fans to snap this up; this is yet another lovely reissue from the good folks at DRG.
Shirley's Personality Shines.......2002-09-17
This album is a must for Shirley MacLaine fans! Her sparkling personality shines through each song she sings and each monologue she shares with the audience. One can only wish this dynamic performance was available on video. In my mind's eye I can almost see Shirley dancing as she performs at the Palace.
Remember you? As if we ever forgot!.......2002-05-22
The prejudice against Shirley MacLaine's performance in the 1969 film of "Sweet Charity" has always mystified me. Okay, so she wasn't Gwen Verdon - who was? She contributed, in a scene of almost unwatchable pain and desperation, one of the most shattering moments in post-war cinema. She was charming, sweetly funny, vulnerable and heart-breakingly hopeful. She sang with humor, gusto, and intense, if delicate, emotion. And she danced the hell out of those great, knock-knee'd Bob Fosse numbers. If her Charity isn't the finest performance in a movie musical since Judy Garland and James Mason slashed the heart in "A Star is Born," I don't know what is. All of what Shirley MacLaine can do best is in that movie, and in this great 1976 live recording. Parts of the extravaganza may feel a bit overdone, a touch self-conscious (if not downright self-congratulatory), and the often effective Cy Coleman arrangements may occasionally border on aggressive showbiz-iness. But Shirley MacLaine's electric gifts shine through. If she hasn't got you by the time she gets through her passionate, whirl-wind rendition of "She's a Star," you're probably beyond gettin'. So, now that Shirl is finally on CD ... Decca - where's that "Sweet Charity" soundtrack?

I have done the show and I would like to say.......1999-04-10
I have done the show on variuos occasions and I would like to say that this is an excelet recording and I fish my company sounded like that one! Ha ha ha ha. Anyways, enjoy!
For Die Hard Fans only.......1998-10-14
One of Broadway's all-time greatest musical scores was of course captured by Columbia in 1966 and it is hard to top. Though Jay Records recording does include much of the score never recorded before ("The Rescue" & "Subway" to name a few) the overall excitement of this recording is diminished due to the extremely SLOW tempos the musical director has chosen to take. Jacqueline Dankworth is an odd choice to record Charity (any one of our American musical theater stars, Ziemba, Neuwirth, Peters might have done more interesting work with the material.) For Die hard fans of "Charity" only.
A terrific studio recording.......1998-09-01
Although it's hard to equal the classic Original Broadway cast album with Gwen Verdon, this dynamic studio recording with Jacqueline Dankworth and Gregg Edelman almost does the trick. The pluses here are the added musical interludes that weren't recorded on the Broadway cast album and additional songs from the movie version. The sound quality is terrific. If you're a fan of the score and Cy Coleman, buy this immediately. You won't be disappointed.
