Throughout the 1980s, "We are the Scorpions!" was lead vocalist Klaus Meine's concert-opening battle cry, energizing and readying the faithful in sold-out stadiums for a Teutonic onslaught of vital, sometimes plodding, eardrum-splitting rock anthems. In short, the arena-rock monsters were never a picnic-under-the-stars kind of band ... until Moment of Glory. The new millennium brings the Scorpions full circle, melding in-your-face party anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (now called "Hurricane 2000") and "Big City Nights" into fully orchestrated concoctions featuring the Berlin Philharmoniker. Where the grandiose likes of "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You" are obvious choices for such a pairing, and indeed, work well, the "Deadly Sting Suite," with almost unrecognizable instrumental versions of "He's a Woman, She's a Man" and "Dynamite," will likely catch the unknowing fan of classic Scorps off guard. Both Deep Purple and Metallica have used full orchestras to accent their songs with mixed results, and the same goes for the Scorps. There's a fine line between wine-and-cheese classical fare and whiney and cheesy metal. Here the Scorpions teeter, if often gracefully, on that line. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on Scorpions.......2007-04-12

I absolutely love the marriage of rock and symphony here. It's gorgeous. The Scorpions take already amazing songs and pump them up an extra notch. A long time ago I heard "Still Loving You" on the radio, not knowing who sung it. It took me years to finally discover the Scorpions. I own two different versions of "Still Loving You," and I far prefer this one to the original. It gives me this yearning inside. The only thing I don't like about this album is the guest vocalists. I love Klaus Meine. He adds an ethereal element to the music, and with the guest vocals, it takes away from the beauty, in my opinion. But don't let that deter you from getting this, because it is so worth it. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is amazing! It's all amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Moment of Glory.......2007-04-01

With metal music it is always louder is better and this album found one of the coolest ways to make metal louder. Combining the Scorpions with a the Philharmonic creates one of the coolest sounding albums I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars [].......2007-03-14

i dont own this album but i have heard the songs off of it and i think their all great and performed well. and also as a side note since i read alot of comments about the guest vocals on "big city nights" but no mention of who: it is Ray Wilson best known for replacing Phill Collins in Genesis and recording the classic Calling all Stations

1 out of 5 stars dynamite!.......2002-10-21

Just when you think the scorpions couldn't do worst...they prove you wrong!
Even Metallica's s&m is better...close but still.
I am sure that it was a great experience to live, for the band and the audience, because that type of event is always unique and can bring strong emotions-unless you have a dumb..s sitting next to you, drinkin' beer and screaming every five minutes Dynamiiiiiiite!!-but on cd...for me it doesn't do it,but it probably is a treasure for those who were there.
Now, I'm not gonna start the debat with DEEP PURPLE and the LSO(1999) but I was there at the Royal Albert Hall and that's why I can understand the concept and the thrill of holding the recording of such concerts...but still DEEP PURPLE 's symphonic album features something that neither Scorpions or Metallica holds...and this is an ORIGINAL PIECE OF MUSIC CREATED FOR A GROUP AND A ORCHESTRA!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Moment of Glory for the Scorpions!.......2002-07-31

AWESOME is how I would sum up this CD. From the moment I first heard it, I knew I HAD to have it. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Pleasingly UNINSPIRED effort..........2005-11-28

From the film composer of the "Magnifcant Seven" and "To Kill A
Mocking Bird" we are given this homage to his two lifelong friends Christopher Palmer(a great orchestator)and Christopher Parkening the featured soloist. Over the years the two had to urge Elmer Bernstein to commit time to compose the concerto. By the time of it's Honolulu premiere in 1999, we get a work seemingly faceless
and more of a accomdation, not typical of the composer. Don't take this wrong as it is not a bad composition. The three movements are harmonically conservative. There is also a broad cinematic melodic line throughout which the guitar soloist works around. However there isn't any one thing that makes the concerto memorable enough for repeated listening. The concerto
and the filler selections flow together for a seemingly nonintrusive 48 minutes. There is not much here to take your mind off whatever else you are doing. Just sit back and enjoy it for what it is! Ear Candy! Good liner notes provided.

2 out of 5 stars It reeks of fuddy-duddy diatonicism, dammit.......2005-02-21

From Elmer Bernstein's liner notes: "The guitar is an instrument that lives happily in the diatonic world, a world in which I am most comfortable. I have made no attempt to force the instrument into what I would consider to be unnatural harmonic territory and have instead elected to let the guitar sing comfortably and joyously where it feels most natural ... The piece is harmonically conservative."

Which is exactly what I dislike about it. Parkening deserves better than Elmer's fuddy-duddy diatonicism. There's a whole other world of chromatic fabulousness out there and Elmer chose to ignore it. The result is musical banality. Don't get me wrong. It succeeds on its own terms and I enjoy it. But like Elmer himself said, the harmonic language is strictly squaresville.

The first movement is loud and kinetic. And because of the guitar's softness, there's not much simultaneous playing from the guitar and the orchestra. So what you hear is the goofy spectacle of a soft guitar alternating with a bombastic orchestra. There's better interaction in the second & third movements. I like the quiet sinister passage at the very end of the REFLECTIONS movement.

From John Demma Van Hagen's review at sonicnet: "Elmer Bernstein bombards the listener with thick and distracting orchestration. The first movement, GUITAR, seems an almost direct quote from a militaristic action flick, complete with an overzealous battery of percussionists and low strings. This over-orchestration leaves the brilliant performance of Christopher Parkening at a bit of a disadvantage, almost forcing him to produce a tinny sound by playing closer to the bridge. Other movements fare slightly better, but it remains a mystery why Bernstein did not use a more jazz-infused harmonic language, as he did in the score for THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM."

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-06-06

As I was reading the reviews by
other, I was wondering if they
ever held a guitar in their arms?
Mr Parkening plays the guitar
wonderful, no wonder why he
is one of the greatest guitarists
of our times. I like this recording,
my favorite is the guitar concerto
by E.Bernstein. The E.Bernstein is
full of life and sunny melodies,
especially in the last movement.
Even the contemplative slow middle
movement of the concerto is radiant,
but at the same time contemplative.
The "Essay for Gutar", by Jack Marshall,
is a work of high stature, and like
E. Bernstein's concerto it is too
full of life.
Great recording, and outstanding works,
hurray for the new guitar concerto!!!

2 out of 5 stars DOES NOT JUSTIFY Mr. PAKENING FAME.......2001-12-10

The initial songs on this CD are a kind of interplay between the orchestra and the guitar player. The music sounds like if it were the soundtrack of some movie besides that I really think that on those initial songs there is little room for Mr. Parkening to justify his fame because the orchestra takes a principal role in the playing. As the CD goes its way to the end, the guitarist takes the principal role in the playing leaving the orchestra to back him up. The pieces of music are slow and inspire you to read some poetry or may be playing it in a romantic date. However I really think that the selection of these pieces does not make justice to Mr Parkening since does let him justify his fame as one of the best guitarists now a days. I think these pieces do not require the most of Mr. Parkening. It seems to me that its light classical music playing. Overall it is not a bad CD for background music but I really agree with one of the reviewers that state that there are beter classical CD's out there not to mention better guitarists. I am sorry I can not tell from this work alone that Mr. Parkening is an excellent guitarrist. This CD left much to be desired.

A final recomendation: there are many guitarrist that deserve a listening but they are not known by the public. An example is Enrique Florez a mexican guitarrist that was disciple of Segovia as well as Narciso Yepes. Unfortunately his CD is not available at amazon but if you ever go to Mexico stop by a music store and ask for one of his CD's (...)
You will see that there are excellent guitarist out there that unfortunatelly they do not have a excellent marketing system back them up.

4 out of 5 stars long live tonality.......2000-12-31

Cheers to Mr Bernstein and Mr Parkening! I purchased this CD because I have been a long time fan of Elmer Bernstein. (Man with Golden Arm and of course, The Ten Commandments) Upon my first listening I too was struck by the "motion picture quality" of the concerto. And at first, thought it a negative. But then I thought I was judging the work on my own point of reference. (motion pictures) well, a hundred years from now people will not be rating this music based on whether it is motion picture music or not. So, I began to listen to it as music, and became enthralled with the composition. Sure, it has it similarities to Aranjuez, and it does get rather bombastic at times, but all in all the concerto is a very solid musical effort. (just pay attention to the various meters in the first movement if you have any question as to whether or not Mr Bernstein knows what he is doing.......and, as far as Mr Parkening is concerned: the man is playing with more soul and maturity today than at any other time. In addition, the La Vega and Essay for guitar(also on the disc) are testimony to the brilliant arranging and writing talents of Jack Marshall. Thank you Mr Bernstein and Mr Parkening.

5 out of 5 stars A mix of baroque and East Coast music.......2001-07-18

"Bach Meets Cape Breton" is an enjoyable mix of baroque and east coast Canadian music, and it works quite wonderfully. Puirt a Baroque's combination of violin/harpsichord/guitar mixes beautifully, and they combine the two styles of music with skill and inspiration.

Read a good long book with this playing in the background, and let it repeat. This is not to call this background music, it is great to hear it on its own and listen for all the nuances and purity. Excellent CD, one I found by accident but enjoy very much.

5 out of 5 stars A unique mix of classical themes with Celtic tempos.......2000-07-19

We received this CD as a gift from a Canadian friend who shares our love of classical music and were pleasantly surprised by the unique character, of these artists who mix classical themes with Celtic form in an utterly charming, and at times even toe-tapping musical presentation. David Greenberg's violin playing is first rate as is that of the other musicians. Bach is clearly there, but heard through a special kind of filter. For those who may run from anything too Celtic, relax, this manages to merge the best of that lighter folk music with the discipline of baroque. A delightful, often played favorite around our home!

    5 out of 5 stars Getting there.......2001-01-22

The Fall started out as the greatest band ever with their unique style of experimental post-punk. Somehow during the late eighties they seemed to start losing their way with mundane poppy tunes losing the acidity with which they started - and the nineties weren't their best years (though by no means terrible). Now, by 2001, Mark E Smith has rediscovered himself. The Marshall Suite is almost the final step on this recovery. Not their best album but it's heading in the right direction. But with the following album, Unutterable, they have become truly great again. So if you're interested in recent Fall get Unutterable first and then this album.

5 out of 5 stars No Antidote For This LP.......2000-03-25

Once again Mr. Smith presents a set of music that satisfies, confounds, amazes and, at least in my case, glues itself in the CD player. We even get a potential hit single in "F-Oldin' Money". The Fall may have been other things in other times, but that was then & this is now. I mean, WHO ELSE is the Fall, really? I waited a long time for the domestic release of this album and it was well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Collection of Horrifying Noise.......2000-03-07

There is something missing here. The musicianship is limited. Had Mark Smith not alienated his former bandmates, we might have been able to continue into something truly remarkable suggested by tracks like "Hurricane Edward" on the preceding "Levitate". The better tracks on here ("Touch Sensitive", "Antidotes", "The Crying Marshall") proceed from the model suggested by "Levitate"'s better tracks - heavily processed sound.

What we did end up with here is an interesting collection of noise, like an industrial-tinged grunge music with the occasional layer of strings on top. It's pretty interesting in places and does show that the Fall is not dead, but they're by no account at the top of their artistic game.

    4 out of 5 stars Phoenix-like!.......1999-12-23

Here's a man who doesn't take a bit of hardship lying down. Faced with a shrinking, ageing fan base, and deteriorating internal relations in the band (resulting in the band - fed up with his bullying and erratic behaviour - walking out last year) it seems Mark E. Smith is determined to go down screaming. This makes for quite an interesting spectacle and this first cd of the 'new' Fall shows a remarkable recovery. The rhythm section is weaker than we're used to, but the band delivers the goods nonetheless with some killer late-gothic tunes like 'Jung Nev's Antidote' and 'The crying Marshall'; frustrates with a shoddy Saints cover and reassures with some good old rockabilly in 'F'oldin Money'. This album demonstrates that in spite of their steady decline over the years the Fall are still better than they've ever been! (certainly no small feat...)

5 out of 5 stars Popular Pieces for Trumpet & Organ.......2007-05-17

This is a very sweet recording of famous and lesser-known whistleable melodies. Antonsen's tone and style is superb and affecting. I would like to have heard a little more of Wayne Marshall, who plays very quietly and has been recorded perhaps slightly too far back on the sound stage. The disc is worth the price for Vocalise alone, but there's 26 tracks, each one a miniature marvel.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-09

Despite being an arrangement done almost two centuries later, the music transports you to the Eighteen Century. The digitalized recording is absolutely incredible in sound and majesty. I recommend this CD for the individual who understands choral music, and the genius of Handel.

5 out of 5 stars Handel according to Beecham according to Handel?!.......2006-02-24

I studied at the University with Geoffrey Gilbert, the flautist with Sir Thomas Beecham and the Royal Phil. I was blest to be with Mr. Gilbert for about two and a half years, so I got a full serving of the world according to Sir Thomas.

If Sir Thomas said this was Handel's intention, you believed it. If you don't accept that, listen to his recording of Messiah! Anyway, this recording is definitely how Handel was done in England in the 50's. But every phrase is caressed with love and attention and the choral singing is outstanding. The "Nightingale" chorus caresses the ear with a sweetness found in no other recording. The soloists were the outstanding Handelians of their day, and the orchestra (not to be left out) does a marvelous job! Just listen to the entrance of the Queen of Sheba. And, be ready for the cymbal crashes at the climaxes of the choruses! Handel really didn't write those, but who cares? After all, Sir Thomas always said, "The British don't much like music, but they LOVE the noise it makes". In this recording you get some glorious noise! I highly recommend this, even to the most hardened purist. Take off your purist earphones and just indulge in pure musical sweetness!

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Beecham ..........2005-06-14

You'll love his reworkings of Solomon and the various orchestral snippets from Handel operas that he wove together to create Love in Bath. But if you're interested in faithful renderings of baroque classics, original instruments, etc., steer clear. I happen to be a sucker for Beecham's instrumentation, but authentic this album emphatically is not. My advice: forget that it's Handel. Just sit back and enjoy this album for what it is, a riotous romp and the best fifties nostalgia this side of Marilyn Monroe.

      5 out of 5 stars a first-rate but little known 20th century composer.......2000-08-03

how can you resist the cover art of geese and fish in boxes?

rawsthorne's warm, complex music is a joy! after getting hooked on his chamber music (also a naxos issue), this was a good logical progression.

it's gentle and romantic in places, but sometimes discordant and angry- but always in complete control. also i had no idea the recorder could be such an expressive instrument- very interesting. this CD is an excellent example of mid 20th century classical music.

spend the $ and get all three naxos issues of rawsthorne's music. the playing is intelligent and sympathetic, the liner notes very helpful, and the naxos engineers have done a good job of capturing little details.

4 out of 5 stars Glimpses of Sir Thomas Beecham.......2006-04-04

Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) was a very gifted conductor who, in the words of several musicians, had an "inner vision" of the music he conducted. He was born into wealth (his father was the founder of a very successful pharmaceutical company in Great Britain) and, given his love for music, was able to found several orchestras in the United Kingdom and conduct them. He was knighted for his extensive work in opera at London's Covent Garden.

Sir Thomas began making recordings, for Columbia, in 1910, making him one of the first major conductors to record. He continued recording with various orchestras until December 1959, when he was 80 years old! He died in March 1961.

EMI engineers were responsible for most (if not all) of Beecham's recordings in Europe. The recordings on this CD were made in London and Paris. Beginning in late 1955, Sir Thomas' recordings were taped both in mono and stereo. During rehearsals for these recordings, as engineers adjusted microphones and balances, the engineers frequently taped Sir Thomas as he rehearsed and talked to the orchestra.

Some of his conversations are VERY funny. He had a good memory for events which had occurred many years ago and the musicians clearly enjoyed listening to his fascinating tales. Among them was the account of meeting someone who had, years earlier, been at a Beecham rehearsal for Richard Strauss' opera "Salome." The man said at one point Sir Thomas asked, "Where's the prophet?" "I've always wondered," the man said, "if you were referring to someone in the cast or the financial condition of the company." Beecham replied: "Both."

During the rehearsal for Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio," Beecham asks, "Where's the piccolo? Who's going to play the d--n piccolo?" It soon becomes apparent that the piccolo player is late and, when he shows up, Sir Thomas demands that the musician come and stand in front of the orchestra and play his solo.

Yes, Sir Thomas could be a martinet as he sought perfection, but he also admitted he was not about to lecture a group of musicians such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on how to play a piece of music. He clearly admired the talented musicians in his orchestras. At the time these recordings were made he was conducting the Royal Philharmonic, an orchestra he had founded near the end of World War II (after he returned from a self-imposed exile in the United States).

There's the famous story, which Sir Thomas tells, of conducting Beethoven's "Leonore Overture No. 3," with its famous offstage trumpet solo. At the crucial moment when the trumpeter was expected to play, Sir Thomas gave a cue and heard nothing. He continued conducting the piece and wondering what had happened. After the concert, Sir Thomas found the perplexed trumpeter and asked him what had happened. "I was about to play my solo," the musician, "and had raised my trumpet when a policeman said, 'You can't play that now. There's a concert going on inside.'"

During one of the rehearsals, in Paris in April 1958, a thunderstorm interrupts the recording. This leads Sir Thomas to recall a recording session years earlier when he was conducting Sibelius' incidental music to Shakespeare's "The Tempest" that was also affected by a thunderstorm; on that occasion the recording engineers decided to continue recording and to release with the extra percussion. At this point the producer comes on the intercom and announces, "We pay extra money for thunderstorms."

These excerpts from Beecham's rehearsals give us rare, fascinating glimpses of how he worked and also a chance to hear some of those memorable stories. While the sound quality varies considerably, it is a wonderful opportunity to HEAR Sir Thomas and appreciate his wonderful musical talents and legendary wit.
