"One of those exciting underground records that skates along the edge of incomprehensibility without being too off-putting -- has some of the spaciousness of New Age but it's dark instead of pretty. Maybe we should call it "dark age" music."

About the Artist
Jeff Greinke is a musician, composer, performer, sound sculptor, and visual artist who is known worldwide for his unique sound. Through a highly developed process of layering, Jeff composes and performs music rich in texture, depth, mood, and subtle detail. Using various acoustic and electronic instruments, found sounds, and extended studio techniques, Jeff sculpts sound worlds that conjure a strong sense of place, hovering somewhere between the exotic and the familiar.

Places of Motility is Jeff Greinke's last remaining early LP to see release on compact disc. This "special edition" re-release was digitally re-mastered by Mike Griffin and Jeff Greinke, and in addition to the twelve tracks from the original LP, includes three otherwise-unavailable pieces: "Travelling Secrets," "The Well," and the never-released "Cirrus."

This project, originally released in 1987 by Dossier, contains elements of all of Greinke's earlier styles - from spacious and highly visual ambience, to daring sonic experimentation, to looped rhythmic elements - and merges them into a coherent whole. This will appeal to fans of styles as widely varied as ambient, New Age, film music, and industrial/experimental.

      Jeff Greinke has always had his own unique
      approach to ambient soundscapes. With even
      a casual listening, one will quickly come to
      realize that he is an original musician.

      "Places of Motility" is a highly rewarding
      atmospheric effort, and delivers Greinke's patented
      blend of electronic music and elemental/organic
      textures that seem to perfectly capture his
      fondness for the ever changing skies of his
      hometown in Seattle. His music even captures a
      sense for the nuanced vagaries and quirks
      of meterology and reveals to us how fascinating
      those sounds and places can be. Places of Motility
      never ceases to give the ear something meaningful
      and engaging to contemplate.

      It would be fair to call greinke a pioneer of what
      folks refer to when they say 'dark' ambient
      or 'isolationist'. He probably doesn't care for such
      titles (and his more recent works have moved into some
      new directions) but he remains his own man.
      Out of hundreds of ambient recordings, I have about a
      dozen of Jeff's works and cherish them all - they
      enjoy the status of belonging to the albums
      I'll always keep.

      Jeff Greinke is one of a handful of composers
      whom I consider to be true lights of the ambient
      genre, and so I don't dole out high praise
      too easily. So sit back, close your eyes and
      open your mind to the Master of Motility.
