here in your living room." If you appreciate Mark Sandman's poetic artistry coupled with the murky, liquid milieu of Billy Conway and Dana Colley, this CD is for you. It contains more musical poetry (or is it poetic music?) than any other Morphine CD. Listen with the lights off; let the sounds envelop you, and you will see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars "I got an action-packed extravaganza..." (from "Mile High").......2004-01-25

This collection of Morphine rarities shows off Mark Sandman's spoken word performance as much as it shows off the band's standard low rock sound and skill with ethereal low-fi.

The live tracks are great, with "Have a Lucky Day" having a bit more frivolity than the studio version; "Mail," "My Brain," "Pulled Over the Car," and the lyrically-rich "Kerouac" are all Sandman-as-poet tracks; "Bo's Veranda" is acoustic guitar made for relaxing with drinks; the two long-format songs, "Sundayafternoonweightlessness" and "Down Love's Tributaries" bring the trippiness of Colley's dragging saxophones and shows off free-form jazz roots, and the swank "Mile High" and "Shame" (two of Morphine's best rockers) keep the entire album from getting too bottom-heavy.

This is a must-buy for any Morphine fan, and is representative of the various genres and styles that have influenced the band.

4 out of 5 stars take it easy, folks.......2003-06-28

for me the album is just another morphine album. by that, I'm trying to say that morphine has no bad album. this may be a b-sides work but it sounds like a average one. don't be silly, folks. don't try to find a secret message. here's the band at his best. it's not junk music, it's the old band playing as usual. spend a good moment and turn off the tv.

5 out of 5 stars it rocks.......2001-07-17

very different from the norm. sometimes its not about what YOU think a band should be about. sometimes its about the band messing their fans a little. this isn't typical morphine. if all you can stomach is typical morphine (or typical anything) you are wasting your time and money. for those of you that are open to some cool and weird stuff, you'll love it. i promise. doodoobrad >>> atl >>> GA.

1 out of 5 stars Morphine's worst.......2001-06-09

Of all the Morphine albums this by far the worst. This is the only Morphine album I would not reccomend. In my opinion YES is by far the best album. For me the albums beakdown like this: Yes is 5 stars, the other albums are 4 stars except for The Night which is 3 stars.

Rock may have been born in America, but a national obsession with the trendy has often begat cultural amnesia when it comes to musical roots. Hence offshore bands like the Vines and Hives recycle '90s grunge/punk and '80s new wave with newfound energy, sometimes finding themselves ironically hailed as rock saviors. Sweden's Caesars don't have salvation on their minds. In fact their '60s garage rock shtick seems doubly recycled, seven of the dozen songs here hailing from a previous 1998 incarnation. Which isn't to say they don't do spiritual forebears like the Swingin' Medallions and ? & the Mysterians proud. Powered by pumping Farfisa-clone organ, trashy guitars, and a suitably snotty vocal attitude, they careen amiably through a sharp cover of the Endd's "Out of My Hands" and originals that range from spunky ("Jerk It Out," "Sort It Out," "You're My Favorite") to spooky ("Suzy Creamcheese"). If there's irony at work here (other than a contemporary Swedish band evoking the spirit of '60s American garage punk and '80s UK new wave, that is) the Caesar's have largely buried it in an avalanche of infectious spirit. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Full title - 39 Minutes Of Bliss (In An Otherwise Meaningless World). 2003 compilation, culled from the Swedish garage rock act's first three albums, 'Youth Is Wasted On The Young' (1998), 'Cherry Kicks' (2000), & 'Love For The Streets' (2002), all of which are big hits. Their sound combines the Farfisa organ-drenched sound of 60's era garage rock with a contemporary pop thrust. But while 60's referencing power-pop bands are a dime a dozen, what sets the Caesars apart is their reliance on creating as much an infectious groove as adrenalin pumping rock. 12 tracks. Virgin.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-01-09

Caesar's Palace, The Caesars, The Twelve Caesars - they're all the same group. They go by different names depending on location - Twelve Caesars in most of Scandinavia, The Caesars in North America, and Caesar's Palace in Sweden, most of europe, and the rest of the world.

They currently have five albums:
39 Minutes of Bliss (as The Caesars)
Paper Tigers (as The Caesars)
Youth Is Wasted On The Young (as The Twelve Caesars)
Cherry Kicks (as Caesar's Palace)
Love For The Streets (as Caesar's Palace)

I hope this helps clarify some things.

I give EVERY SINGLE ALBUM five out of five stars - great vocals, great leads, great base, great melodies, great everything. If you like rock, don't pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars Jerk it Out.......2005-11-21

I first heard the Caesars in an iPod Shuffle commercial in February 2005. I was depressed at that time, but that song's "and you feel it running through your bones" part made me feel better!

3 out of 5 stars 39 Minutes Of Decently Derivative Music(in an otherwise tedious music scene).......2005-11-13

O.K, so "Jerk It Out" is one of the greatest songs of this admittedly young century and we would all like to buy this album in hopes of more songs like this. Only life never seems to work the way we want it to, especially with music. The album is fun and energetic and damn if these Swedes don't like funny lyrics and driving Farfisa organ. The opener , "Sort It Out" is a hyper and groovy workout about smoking crack and banging their heads against the wall because their girl is gone. These are funny, goofy lyrics along the lines of The Ramones. Actually, these cats could be to the Farfisa organ what The Ramones were to heavy guitar rock. Ultimatley the songs are quite expedient, and these boys seem to know it, as "Jerk It Out" has appeared on no less than three of their albums. I hope they last a while and find their hidden musical mojo because, damn, I love that cheesey organ sound. Don't you?

2 out of 5 stars Potential is there............2005-07-09

I admit i was quite excited about this band after i heard "Jerk it out," but the truth is that other than this and a few other songs there isn't much in this album or in the Caesars. For instance, there's something definitely wrong when a band puts the same song in two different albums. And the song that just happens to appear more than once, is "Jerk it Out." The song is very catchy, but I'd like to hear more than just a few good songs from an album. They definitely have the potential, but they're just not quite there yet.

5 out of 5 stars Cool!!!.......2005-06-09

Well, I first heard for The Caesars when I heard their song, Jerk It Out, couple of years ago, when playing Fifa 2004. It was one of the songs in the game's jukebox. So, I only got this song then. And now, I remebered again on this Swedish rockers and got the whole cd. And I found out, that they make a pretty cool music. I don't mean just Jerk It Out. Also some other songs are really cool.

The Caesars play this 60's garage rock. but they also added some electronics to some of their songs. Their music souds somewhere between the Kings Of Leon (especially in the song You're My Favorite) and Jet or maybe The Hives. The title of the album suggests that there is 39 minutes of great music on it, but in my opinion, there are also two songs that sound a bit weird. Suzy Creamcheese and Since You've Been Gone are more instrumental songs with some electronics in it and are really small part of vocals. And they just sound a bit frustrating, especially Suzy Creamcheese. But, all the other songs are really cool rock songs, especially You're My Favorite, Crackin' Up, Fun And Games, Sort It Out, I'm Gonna Kick You Out and Jerk It Out.

As I already said, You're My Favourite sonuds a bit like it would be sang by King Of Leon. It just sounds great. Sort It Out is a song about a man who can't get over a woman, ''...I wanna smoke crack cuz your never comin' back ,...'' and it sounds a bit depressive. The beggining of I'm Gonna Kick You Out is similar to the beginning of Jerk It Out, because of electronic effects. The best part of this song is a really really good chours. Crackin' Up has a bit slower pace and it just sounds nice, with cool chours. Fun And Games is another a bit slower song, with the coolest chours (...You're a young girl and you're really not on your own, you're a young girl and you shouldn't be allowed to roam ). This song is just soo nice, that you really must hear it. And then, there's Jerk It Out. The best song on this cd. There's also a little more electronics in this one. Also, this song has just an amazing beats. So, with all that and cool lyrics, this is just a perfect dance-rock song. Just amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, Terrible Title.......2006-03-31

It's a great album, and the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the horrifying grammatical error in the title (look again) that I'm sure the band regrets constantly. The sound quality is not that wonderful, but there are some truly memorable tunes on it just the same. By all means, get this thing if you don't have it, but buy their self-titled debut album first. That, and check the alternative tentacles website before shelling out more than twelve bucks for this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Donut's Best.......2002-03-22

Alice Donut was one of the core bands of Alternative Tentacles back in the late '80s and early '90s. Their first album catches them at their rawest, but also their most fun.

Musically, Donut's style has much in common with the psychedlic punk style of the...Surfers, but I regard Donut as being the more straight-up fun-to-listen-to of the two. The Surfers are great, but in a different way. Alice Donut's work is better informed by a sense of humor and a lively attitude than the Surfers, who usually come off as being much darker and more serious. However, this does not mean that Alice Donut does not pack some weight - in keeping with many Alternative Tentacles bands, Alice Donut follows in the footsteps of the Dead Kennedies with thier lyrics - heavy sarcasm, but always socially and politically relevant. Buy this album, sit back, dig the lyrics and enjoy the wild, slapdash music!

This album has a bit of a darker cast than "Donut Comes Alive" or "Mule" (these three albums feature Donut's original line-up), but still carries the wild energy one should expect from this band. It is their first "real" album, since Donut Comes Alive was technically a "live" album. Be sure to check out tracks 1,2,4,5,7 and 8.

"Lisa's Father" is a CD bonus track. Originally appearing on a Alternative Tentacles marketing compliation album, it was NOT on the original "Bucketfulls" LP. One will notice that it diverges from the style of the album markedly, since it is basically Ted Houghton doing a spoken word bit. It is still really fun to listen to, and is in fact one of my favorite bits by Alice Donut.

5 out of 5 stars Genre Defining.......2001-06-01

Going way beyond the bounds of "punk" and what was supposed to be played and discussed within the confines of "punk", Alice Donut helped to break the mold. Coming on hard on the heals of someone like the Dead Kennedys, A.Donut helps define the dark muse which so many Alternative Tentacle (Or just plain Alternative) bands reply upon. A great example of this, is "Lisa's Father" which is found on this disk.

The song deals with those amusing little Christian comic books which you get handed every once in awhile. In this particular issue, a little girl is getting molested/raped by her father and a neighbor while her mother hides with the help of Jack Daniels. Eventually, all is found out, but the parents discover Jesus and tell LIsa to pray. Hilliariously Horrible. And that is Alice donut.

This album is tremendous, as with all of their releases. Not only do they expand the definition of what "punk" can be thematically and lyrically, but musically, they are no slouches either. Listen to Dorothy as an example. Stephen Moses always provides great drumming, especially on that tune. Rockin' good fun.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album as soon as possible.......1999-09-02

"Bucketfuls" is easily one of the best punkish/pop albums you will ever hear. Actually, that last sentence can used for every one of their albums. What's wonderful about this album is that every song has it's own uniqueness and sound and you will easily find yourself playing the album again and again.(As I did when I played the tape I had of this over and over until it wore out.) Yes, unfortunately this band ended it's legacy on a bad note with "Pure Acid Park", but do not let that album sway you from their other albums.(Most notably "Bucketfuls", "Revenge"(the best", "Mule", and "Untidy".) For those of you who never got to see Alice Donut play live, YOU NOW HAVE AT LEAST ONE REGRET IN YOUR LIFE.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE.......1999-05-26

MOST people haven't heard of Alice Donut EVER. I happened onto them quite by accident, but what a great accident! They're gone now, off to that Great-Bands-That-Nobody-Ever-Heard-Of Record Store in the Sky...but hey, they left all this great music! Look how cheap it is! Quick, start buying it now before they're "discovered" and their albums are $15 a pop! Bucketfulls of Sickness, Mule and Untidy Suicides are the three essential albums, start from there. Enjoy!

Canadian bluesman Harry Manx makes what sounds like a recipe for disaster--acoustic covers of "The Thrill Is Gone" and "Foxy Lady" featuring the veena, a South Indian stringed instrument somewhat similar to the banjo--work surprisingly well. Manx comes by the Indian influences in his music honestly. He spent 25 years in India before relocating to Canada, where NorthernBlues (home of the equally accomplished Otis Taylor) has presented his second album, a follow-up to 2001's Dog My Cat. Wise and Otherwise continues the unusual but highly successful mix of traditional acoustic blues and Indian music pioneered on Manx's first album, though the inevitable comparisons to Kelly Joe Phelps are still apt. It's a little different from what you'd normally expect out of an acoustic bluesman, perhaps, but certainly none the worse for that. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tremendously talented........2006-10-04

I just saw an interview with Harry Manx on a Canadian Blues programme called "Talkin' Blues". I have to say i was totally knocked out by his very sincere approach, his gentle manner and calm and happy countenance.
He's got to be one of the nicest musicians on the planet. He's also tremendously talented having studied the Mohan Vina under the guidance of V.M. Bhatt for 5 years in India. This is NO easy task.
His sound reminds me of Kelly Joe Phelps but perhaps his style is a tad more varied.
If you buy any CD of Harrys i don't think you'll be disappointed at all.

5 out of 5 stars Wise and Wiser to buy this.......2006-01-30

Wise and Otherwise
Harry Manx
Northern Blues NBM0008
An instrument prominently featured on this record is the mohan veena, used in the whole Western world by only Harry Manx and the late George Harrison. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt developed and named this hybrid slide guitar, which is a highly modified archtop guitar, played lap-style. It has 19 strings: three melody strings and four three drone strings coming out of the peg heads, and 12 sympathetic strong to tuners mounted to a piece of wood added to the side of the neck. The melody strings are on what we would consider the treble side of the neck, and the drone strings are on the bass side. The drone strings are lower in height than the melody strings to allow for unrestricted playing of the melody strings. The sympathetic strings run underneath the melody and drone strings to yet another level in the bridge. The instrument has a carved spruced top, mahogany back and sides, a mahogany neck, and a flat, fretless, rosewood fingerboard. It is under tremendous tension; the total strings pull to be in excess of 500 pounds, which creates strong tones more intensely abetted by the sympathetic strings with each note played. It is also a very loud instrument made to cut through with low amplification, like a banjo or resonator guitar.
Now you're ready for next Thursday's pop quiz on mohan veena, but that doesn't mean you're ready for Harry Manx. I think that preparation takes decades, and the right decades at that. In brief, I think that Harry Manx was born at approximately the same time rock was born and has matured with it, and that his music is for listeners who have done likewise.
The familiar covers from Wise and Otherwise, "Foxy Lady(Jimi Hendrix)," "The Thrill Is Gone(B.B. King)" and "Crazy Love(Van Morrison)" are all from the cusp of our popular music, right between the British Invasion and FM radio rock. His originals come from that same time and place, an environment in which musicians suddenly found themselves with more than three minutes per song in which to communicate with large audiences and responded with a commitment to more sophisticated messages. Without Neil Young's periodic reliance on electric amplification, Manx shares his fascination for strong visual images and ability to spin dramatic stories from them. Among the seven and a half Manx originals on this album are "Tethered Dogs," "Roses Given" and "Coat of Mail," all three rooted as strongly in sight as in sound.
Harmonica, slide guitar and banjo complete Wise and Otherwise instrumentation, all played by Manx. Vocal duties hereon are all his, too. Production values aren't the highest. It sounds as if the microphones were better than their placement in the studio, and another layer of mixing might have gotten rid of that feedback. This album is good in random rotation on a CD changer with vintage Taj Mahal, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt and George Harrison. It is in a class with those recordings. I am very, very glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2006-01-07

I bought this album after hearing Harry Manx on the radio, and it is excellent. The music is so unique, and has a great sound. Manx is a great instrumentalist and songwriter. I am a big fan of indian music and blues, and this is a great mixture of the two. I highly recommend this album!

5 out of 5 stars Harry Manx is my hero.......2005-08-28

Manx opens a new listeners mind to what is possible with a unique style that combines bluegrass with indian roots. His years living overseas before returning to Canada have shown to add to the broad range of influence from where he draws such a unique sound. His lyrics are thought filled and one of a kind and i would reccomend this CD to anyone who is trying to expand his bluegrass/new age folk horizons.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Manx.......2004-10-01

I first heard Harry Manx live at Australia's brilliant East Coast Blues & Roots Festival. Foxy Lady played on a banjo ! Who would have thought?
A truly great sound, well crafted originals and interesting treatments of blues and rock classics. I have hunted down and purchased all the discs and love them all. The sound of the Mohan Veena, all twenty plus strings, adds a haunting eastern gloss to a fine collection. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars Fire from Lindholm.......2001-11-17

This set contains four records with two abridged live performances. I have as yet only listened to the performance from 1974. This is one of the first pirated records to appear with the Swedish dramatic soprano Berit Lindholm. Let us hope that recordings from the Ring conducted by Sir Colin Davis at Covent Garden will appear soon! Meanwhile this Tristan from Amsterdam 1974 fills the gap with a truly amazing dramatic force. You can feel the amazement and tension among the public, crying out their "bravos" at the end. This is Lindholm's evening and a great one ideed. Totally involved in her part she becomes Isolde and everything catch fire... No Wagnerian or other opera lover can be without these records. The first two CD's concentrates on the part of Isolde (1974).The performance from 1979 (not with Lindholm)concentrates on the tenor, Spas Wenkoff - more comments will follow when I have listened to that. For the moment, the 5 stars are for the 1974 recording.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction into the Genre.......2004-08-04

Being the sheltered white guy that I am, I never had any real exposure into this genre, other than the well known (and well talented) Bob Marley. I have to say that this compilation provides a wonderful variety of dub music for one to enjoy, and it certainly whetted my appetite for more of this tripped out music. If you don't have, get!

5 out of 5 stars Top Rankin B&F.......2001-03-24

This was my first introduction into the Blood & Fire releases. Unbeknowest to me, I would be in for a serious ride when I took this CD and learned of B&F's involvement w/ every artist on this compilation. This compilation is simply raw, untamed, and full of the reasons why you would want to own all of B&F's catalogs/reissues. I was entranced each time I listened to this CD. Classic Horace Andy "Government Land" Jah Stitch "African People 3in1" Burning Spear "Institution" and so many. This a gem of a compilation. B&F know what they're doing fe sure!

Product Description

Critics called Natto Quartet's April 2003 debut, Headlands, "exotic, equisitely crafted, and eye opening" (Signal to Noise) and "music for our time" (AllAboutJazz.com), with The Wire's Bill Shoemaker noting, "each sound has the self-contained integrity of a stroke of masterful calligraphy." "The sound is so arresting and unique," mused WEMU Music Librarian/Cadence Senior Columnist Michael G. Nastos, "that the open-minded listener cannot help but be completely drawn into their weave of sonic wonder. It's a truly new music unlike anything I've ever heard, a strong candidate for best avant project of 2003, and sure to turn many a global thinking, progressive-minded ear inside out." Thousand Oaks further documents the group's singular approach to finding common ground for collective improvisation with instruments from otherwise disparate eras, cultures and musical genres.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great improvised music.......2005-08-27

This is beatiful improvised music, but so great that it is hard to believe that it is really improvised.
What I like most is the wonderful blend of sounds that comes from such a different bunch of instruments, ranging from piano to shakuhachi to live electronics.
This music, anyway, in my opinion, is greatly indebted to japanese music, to shakuhachi compositions I mean, of which it represents a sort of "coloured" version.

Oh yeah. If you like real authentic rootsy dub reggae. This is the collection for you. I saw the price and looked at the track listing, asked myself how could I go wrong?
