About the Artist
The Adult Film Stars is the solo project of Seattle singer/songwriter G. Paulsen, who plays most every instrument on his debut ‘Money Shot’. Paulsen was formerly a member of Spank the Monkey, a Minneapolis funk-punk band that released one album, "Pets or Meat" on Channel 83 Records. With influences ranging from Prince, Ween, and the Pixies, Paulsen prefers to describe The Adult Film Stars music as "adult contemporary rock on Prozac".

Keyboardist Robert Walter has built a reputation for his gutbucket Jazz-funk chops from his work in the Greyboy Allstars. Now taking it to the streets with his own 20th Congress, Walter is joined by Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Greyboy guitarist Elgin Park, and some funky cats from the San Diego club scene. A fine crew of funk-jazz chefs, the Congress cooks up a soul-stirring mix of Walter originals, Dr. John and John Patton covers, and even a hidden cover of Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." Walter and Co. have no problem making their points in a relatively quick five minutes accorded most tunes. Nonetheless, when they do stretch out, as on closer "Blues for Y2K" and "Instant Lawn," listeners can get a sense of the players' ingenuity. Perfect for the backyard BBQ or the downtown lounge, Money Shot is a fine solo debut from Walter and another great addition to the Fog City catalog. --Tad Hendrickson

File Under Old-School!.......2006-08-27

Robert Walter may have been born on the West Coast, but his style is from New Orleans. And how funky it is! All of these 11 tracks (even the hidden'12th one tha tcovers a heavy metal song) posess serious groove and bite - New Orleans style.

And while hitting that deep pocket, Walter and his cohorts do not forget to show off their musicianship. All too often, funk jams can get boring due to meandering and directionless solos, but that is not the case here. Of particular note is Walter's organ and Gustalem's alto sax for their ability to keep solos exciting and climactic.

And when I say this sounds like a New Orleans record, I am the oppositte of kidding. If one closes their eyes during the second track (originally played by Dr John and the Meters) one could easily be fooled into thinking that the Meters were playing this version as well, with Walter playing the part of Art Neville and Stanton Moore, the spitting immage of Joseph Modeliste.

Highlights for me were the aforementioned "Everybody waanna get rich) rite away," the slow, grinding "White Russ," the extended jam of "Instant Lawn," and the very experimental "Blues for Y2K."

Simply put, though, this CD grooves like nobody's business from front to back.

I bought this on an Amazon recommendation while purchasing a little Galactic and Karl Denson. It took me a while to truly appreciate it, but now it won't leave the short rotation in my car. As with any of these jazzier jambands, I would recommend seeing them live to ge the real flavor. These honkies know funk.

It's not for everyone, but if you like that B-3, funk, 70's cop-show theme song sound, you'll like these guys. Stanton Moore, my new favorite drummer, does a great job on this album, but don't fret that he's not a permanent fixture. Whoever they have on drums these days is fantastic.

Give this one time. It'll gets better with age.

I like it, but something's a little off..........2002-04-16

I love the Greyboy Allstars and follow the individual musicians as they have come into their own. Robert Walter is finding a niche, and it's a pretty nice one, but this disc isn't quite there yet. It doesn't have the drive of Soulive or the unbridled funk of Stanton Moore, I would recommend those before this disk. It's a little restrained to me.

RW and Stanton Moore put together some phat grooves in this album. If you don't mind some trite melodies once in a while, I recommend this CD. Peace :out

neo-funk contenders.......2000-10-10

A rock-solid set of organ-driven, '70's-style instrumental funk easily reccommended to fans of MMW, Galactic, Headhunters, etc. IMHO, the 20th Congress are among the better practitioners of the increasingly popular neo-funk style. While nothing here could really be called original or groundbreaking, the disc features a nice variety of grooves, deftly avoiding the boredom-through-repition effect that all too often undermines groups within this genre when they attempt (and fail) to replicate the energy of their live sets within the confines of a recording studio. The 20th Congress displays a crack level of collective musicianship throughout(particularly Mr.Walter on the keys and drummer Stanton Moore, on loan from Galactic) and the disc is very well-produced. As an added value, this is an "enhanced" CD with additional audio and video tracks that can be played on a CD-ROM drive. I should also note that there is a bonus track hidden at the end of the album in the usual fashion -- it's a highly funkified cover of "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." (Yes, the Judas Priest song!)

Well this is the first D-shot album i bought... and i cant stop listing to it. this is one hella sicc album. Songs like "Freak in the dogg house""lets get kinky" flow nicly and the beats bumb, "thats game" is laid back, kurupt and roscoe rap there part. and "pimp on" just let you players know whats up. Pick up this album. you wont regret it. peace out

TIIIIIIIIIGHT BAY HIP-HOP.......2001-06-30

This is an excellent CD for all those fans of "hustla" music, whether East, West, South or North, This one is tiiight and worth the money. Watch out for upcoming hip-hop artist JAMEL LO from the Bay.

Catchy - Funny - Stimulating Music!.......2002-08-15

G. Paulsen has served up some quirky humor thrown into a mix of mellow, easy to latch onto sound. The lyrics and vocals have an off the street edge, paired with smooth synth/beats that draw you in and keep you listening. Definitely music you can take a curious interest in - not just more mindless droning.

"To Die For" is a lullingly smooth, but dark interlude about disappointment and suicide. "That's The Curb" has real grit that appeals - combined with an easygoing retro-funk cadence that draws you along - I think these two are my favorites in the bunch.

It's kind of indefinable, but the songs creep up on you as you listen through the tracks a couple of times. Give it a good listen, put it down for a bit, then bring it back...Even through the first listen, you might find familiarity there that you can't quite put your finger on; by the second, the hooks are in. I admit that it may not fit perfectly into the majority of music I listen to, but when I couldn't help but hum a few of these catchy songs to myself, I knew I liked this album!

Trailer Parks and Pornos.......2002-07-31

I think the album is an interesting mix between Ween,Flaming Lips,Gomez, and a digital Bob Marley. Paulsen doesn't take himself too serious which gives the entire album a lighter "prozac" feel. Some of the pitch effects on his voice I've heard enough of, I like hear a people really sing, speak, yell, and/or don't say anything at all. I've listened to the album three times in the last week and I do enjoy some phases and feelings the album invokes. If you are just sitting around the lake cabin with nothing to do, listen to the album.

This Money Shot Hits the Mark!.......2002-07-24

G Paulsen is a very talented songwriter and musician--he writes very cool riffs and has a talent for writing songs. A lot of the songs have clever and funny lyrics, which I really enjoyed. For example, "It's Gettin' Warm in Here" is hilarious, if you listen to the lyrics. G Paulsen's style reminds me of two of my other favorite artists, Beck, and Ween, who also inject humor into their songs. I think "To Die for" is a great tune--a beautiful melody, very memorable and catchy. It deserves radio airtime! I'm sure that as more people hear this album they will want to hop on the Adult Film Stars bandwagon. Check this album out! I definitely recommend it.

Money Shot.......2002-07-13

G. Paulsen is an original. I find his music enjoyable to listen to on a road trip or while working in the office. Paulsen has some quirky humor in some of his songs. He is a thoughtful and talented writer and performer. I look forward to his next album.

Comfortable tunes.......2002-07-11

Very easy to listen to, but not easy listening. This is good music to drive to, but won't fuel the road rage.

My best description would be "alternative sponge rock", all those qualities creep in and run right through but don't rub you the wrong way.
